[SOLVED] Cannot remove mate-desktop and its dependencies

I'm doing some tidying up and decided that mate-desktop had to go. So I issued:
$ sudo pacman -Rss mate-desktop
which got me:
checking dependencies...
error: failed to prepare transaction (could not satisfy dependencies)

which surprised me as the man page for pacman suggested that -Rss removes a package and all its dependencies, even those explicitly installed, which -Qi revealed was the case for, example, pluma.
Attempting to remove the mate group got me very similar results:
$ sudo pacman -Rss mate

This is the solution:
sudo pacman -Rsn mate mate-extra
which includes the n option to not save any settings.

Hey, I'm using the Full Development System version 5.0.1, and I was wondering if I can take a VI and its dependencies and turn them into an executable which doesn't depend on Labview's being installed.
Or if not, what is the minimum amount of Labview that needs to be installed in order to run a .Vi?

Use Application Builder to create an executable. I believe LV 5.0.1 is close to 5.1.1. You'd get a .exe file that you can distribute. Keep in mind that you need Run Time Engine installed in the machine that will run without the LabVIEW development system. I believe the run time engine is free. If you use the SQL toolkit, you'll need to get a run-time license for App Builder.
In LV 5.1.1, under Project menu, select "Build Application".
I'd generally build a single VI containing all the VIs but you can certainly link it to an external file. Both ways work.
Under "Top Level VI", you'd need to specify the Top Level VI if you want the VI to execute automatically. Otherwise, it'll prompt you to select a VI to run.

I CANNOT get my desktop and iPhone to sync iCal

No matter what I do, including plugging the iphone into the desktop and 'syncing', no iCal data is transferred from the iPhone to my desktop! Uggggg-I can't wait for Cloud and pray it becomes far easier. You cannot believe how much time I spend deleting duplicate and triplicate events, inputting data twice - into the iPhone and then into the desktop so they match. It seems pretty ridiculous to have to make this so labor intensive when it should be so streamlined.
Where does the problem lie? I don't know...I think I need to hire a consultant to come and sort out this mess.

[SOLVED] Cannot removing orphans

Hi to everyone! From a couple of days I cannot remove programs orphans. If i do: sudo pacman -Rs $(pacman -Qtdq) the output is:
error: no targets specified (use -h for help)
Where is the problem?!

[SOLVED] Mate desktop and rotating backgrounds

Hello Arch Community,
As I've aged my vision has degraded. I now use a 42" LED (not lcd) TV as my main monitor. I've got a post into the mfg asking about burn-in related issues on my specific model.
I see on the web varying opinions, screenshots, supporting, or debunking LED based burniin. I have never in all of my working career, have I ever had an LCD or LED monitor burn-in. It is curious on why the TV's would suffer from this seeing that they use the same technology.
The difference for me is, I have the sharpness, brightness, contrast, and backlights all cranked down to sane levels. I've always ran my monitors "gently" instead of bright. Bright hurts my eyes,...... a lot.
The screen is 3' away from me, so it doesn't need to broadcast it's photons across the living room.
Back on topic......
As a precaution, I've set my taskbar to auto-hide.
But I'd like to setup my screen backgrounds to rotate on a periodic basis. I don't see a native MATE mechnism for doing this.
Can someone please offer suggestions on how to do this in my chosen DE?

You could try installing Feh.
You'll have to stop Caja from drawing your background first, though.
Open a terminal and run:
$ mateconf-editor
and navigate to / -> apps -> caja -> preferences and untick "show_desktop".
Then run Feh as per the wiki's instructions for a random background.
EDIT: wrote the wrong mateconf entry, sorry. Also this will stop caja drawing icons on your desktop - who needs those anyway?

I was inspired after reading this post.
% sudo pacman -Rdd virtuoso libdrm libdrm-nouveau
% sudo pacman -S virtuoso-base libdrm libdrm-nouveau1
% sudo xargs sh -c 'pacman -Sd "$@" < /dev/tty' --
% sudo pacman -Su
There were a few other packages needing manual intervention (sip and python-sip). But now I've noticed that I've gotten missing modules errors during mkinitcpio and I'm seeing "glibc: /lib exists in filesystem."
I'm marking this as solved while I wade through those other issues.

So i finally installed arch linux with gnome successfully for the first time. (YAY! ) For my first install i decided to use Slim as my login manager, until i found out that i couldn't shutdown the computer using the shutdown button in gnome. So i decided in install GDM. But now when i try to remove slim in terminal using 'pacman -R slim', i get the follow error.
error: failed to prepare transaction (could not satisfy dependencies)
:: archlinux-themes-slim: requires slim
:: slim-themes: requires slim
Can anyone help me here? I already switched to using GDM already. Thanks.

When you try to remove something and it doesn't work, you have some choices. Since slim-themes and archlinux-themes-slim are useless if you don't have slim installed, this command will remove slim and the things that depend on it:
pacman -Rscn slim
From pacman's remove help (pacman -R --help):
-c, --cascade remove packages and all packages that depend on them
-s, --recursive remove dependencies also (that won't break packages)
(-ss includes explicitly installed dependencies too)
-n, --nosave remove configuration files as well
You just want to make sure that you're not removing too much stuff. Look at the list of stuff that comes up to be sure. If you're sure, it's safe to remove.
The pacman Wiki article is very helpful, as well the man page, and the help files.

Cannot sync between desktop and Pearl

I have set up the sync between my laptop and phone, but I cannot set it up with my desktop computer at work. Desktop manager won't let me set up sync preferences. thanks

For some reason when I download the firefox browser from the 'official' mozilla site, it is downloading to my desktop and its files to my desktop even though safari is set to download all files into applications. How do I change this?

When I download firefox from the official mozilla site on my imac it is downloading its files to my desktop, covering my desktop in junk and I can't get rid of it as it is part of the browser. Why is it doing this? Why isn't it downloading to the right place?

Usually the icon on a file will provide indication of hte application used to open it. Highlight the file in Finder and Get Info on it. It should say what is used to open it.
iTunes will not play all file formats. Even some formats such as mp3 which it should in theory play it will not play all versions of the format. Those mp3s may play okay in Quicktime but the file has some small aspect to it which iTunes will not recognize.

Navigation panel empty. Cannot access the Desktop and Rules... Solution?

The Theme we are using now, does not show content in the navigation panel.
I now need to change the Desktop rules, but cannot access it because it is not there...
Is there a way around this problem?
Can I change the navigation panel so that it displays the content again (how)?
Is there a direct link to the Desktop rules, that I can enter in the url?

Cannot remove identity plate and other problems

Hi- so I think I may have majorly screwed up. I am relatively new to lightroom, and here's what I did.
I was just putting the finishing touches on a few of my photos to get them to the client today, and my computer started acting funny and wouldn't let me use the keyboard and would only open limited things. Desperate not to lose all the work I had done, I clicked on "export pdf" and saved the images to my hard drive.
After rebooting my computer, all of my images were missing from lightroom, and when I googled how to fix this, the solution I found was to synchronize the lightroom catalog with the folder on my hard drive. Now, some of the images have what looks like a permanent identity plate, and the other images are still missing.
Can anyone help me with where to go from here?

[SOLVED] Disable/remove NetworkManager, and use netctl

Hello!
I just installed arch linux and gnome shell with only few applications. I was using netctl-auto, which I enabled using systemctl during the installation. Everything was worked fine, until I installed the packages tlp and tlp-rdw. They pulled in NetworkManager as a dependency and now I can only use this and not netctl. When I try to uninstall NetworkManager it doesn't allow me, because of some applications that depend on it. One of them is "telepathy-mission-control" and appearantly gnome-shell is depending on that... I have no idea why this complication suddenly occurs, since everything was working fine until I installed tlp, tlp-rdw and its dependencies.
Can anyone tell me how to disable or preferably completely remove NetworkManager in favor of netctl, so we can be re-united and live happily in netctl-auto-harmony once again?

After more searching on google I was able to
find the solution, google really does work!!
maybe this can help someone else as well to
reset your MATE-destop to default taskbar to
#mate-panel --reset
then the panels should respawn from any
changes made.

Removing Desktop and Computer Icons in Finder Windows

I have 25 eMacs at a school and I want to remove the Desktop and Computer icons in the Finder so students cant access the Library or other folders.
I went under Finder Preferences and checked off HD, Computer, Desktop and others, but they still appear. I'm using Simple Finder with access to only My Applications, Documents and a Shared folder. That is all I want them to see or access.
Any ideas?? Thanks for the time and affort!!

If you only provide them access to the mentioned folders, then everything else is read-only. Although they may be able to see the files and folders they will not have access to them. That's the role of permissions.
As for displaying the HD, Computer, Desktop, etc. you need to disable those in each account.
