[SOLVED] Console Font Gets Reset During Boot

I've recently switched to Arch Linux and am quite happy with it.  I've never had so much fun with Linux until a friend recommended Arch.  I have since installed it on both my MacBook Pro and Mac mini.  Everything has been pretty smooth, but I do have one issue.
During the boot process, the system starts up with its default console font, per the usual.  I have edited /etc/vconsole.conf to set the font to Lat2-Terminus16 and to set the keyboard layout to Dvorak.  Here's my current config:
KEYMAP=dvorak
FONT=Lat2-Terminus16
Part-way through the boot process, the font switches to use the new font.  So far, so good.  Shortly after, however, the screen gets cleared and continues to produce normal kernel messages until the screen is cleared once again and presents the boot prompt, but with the default console font as opposed to the font in vconsole.conf.  I am able to re-set the font again by using the setfont command, but this is a bit of an inconvenience.  The keyboard layout, however, is as it should be: set to Dvorak.  So, systemd-vconsole-setup.service is doing its job.
I have narrowed down the problem to that when agetty starts, it seems to be resetting the font back to the default.  I have tried adding nouveau (my machines have Nvidia) to the array of modules within /etc/mkinitcpio.conf and rebuilding initramfs, but I get the same results.  I have also tried adding vconsole.font=Lat2-Terminus16 to the boot arguments in GRUB, but I get the same results.  This is affecting both of my machines.  I have updated them with pacman -Syu, but the problem still exists.
I have found a workaround which is to add a service to systemd (I call it fontfix.service), set it to start after getty.target, and have it included in multi-user.target.  But is there a better way?  Or is something else other than agetty resetting the font?
tl;dr
agetty appears to be resetting the console font after systemd-vconsole-setup.service sets the font.  Is there a way to have agetty recognize what console font is currently is use?  Or is something else other than agetty resetting the font?

  • [SOLVED] Console Font Not Retained After Reboot

    Hi, again.  Happy to report that I successfully installed Arch Linux last night, with no problems whatsoever.  Thanks to those who addressed my concerns.  Still reading up on the package manager, user and group management, etc.
    Anyway, one of the first things I noticed is that the console font gets reset after every reboot.  I need to manually type "setfont Lat2-Terminus16" - which works just fine, except for the annoyance in having to do that each time I boot up.  My /etc/vconsole.conf has the following:
    KEYMAP=us
    FONT=Lat2-Terminus16
    Following the solution described here:
    https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=155876
    I added 'consolefont' (without quotes) to the beginning (first item) of the HOOKS line in /etc/mkinitcpio.conf.  Then I rebuilt the initramfs by typing "mkinitcpio -p linux".  Again, no errors during the rebuild.
    I've rebooted several times, but there's no change...  my selected console font is not retained.
    Can anyone point what I'm doing wrong, or offer ideas?  Thanks.

    Have you tried
    If the fonts seems to not change on boot, or change only temporarily, it is most likely that they got reset when graphics driver was initialized and console was switched to framebuffer. To avoid this, load your graphics driver earlier. See for example KMS#Early_KMS_start or other ways to setup your framebuffer before /etc/vconsole.conf gets applied.

  • [Solved] console font issue

    Hi there!
    Can't get terminus-font in console
    I installed terminus-font, and renamed it as it described at wiki:
    cp /usr/share/kbd/consolefonts/ter-v14n.psf.gz /usr/share/kbd/consolefonts/ter-v14n.psfu.gz
    FONT="ter-v14n" string added to /etc/vconsole.conf
    "consolefont" hook added to mkinitcpio hooks list, mkinitcpio rebuilt.
    But after reboot I still have a default font.
    During boot I can see that font switches to terminus but at login prompt it switches back to default font.
    I think font itself is ok: I can switch to terminus manually by running 'setfont ter-v14n' and it works fine. But it so boring to do it on every boot...
    Where am I wrong?
    Thanks in advance.

    That's Russian and I'd rather not touch non-English pages. I barely have to time to fix the English ones, so spreading myself thinner isn't going to help.
    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cyrillic_script
    Google translated the part about the cp command as
    In this case, after the installation of many of the fonts, for example, terminus, font files, and even get there automatically, but are unsupported extension psf.gz. To a certain variable CONSOLEFONT font was found, rename the font file to its expansion was psfu.gz.
    That's not true - at least not anymore. Maybe it once was <shrugs>
    $ cat /etc/vconsole.conf
    FONT=ter-v16n
    FONT_MAP=8859-2
    KEYMAP=pl2
    $ ls -l /usr/share/kbd/consolefonts/ter-*.psfu.gz
    $ ls -l /usr/share/kbd/consolefonts/ter-v16n.psf.gz
    -rw-r--r-- 1 3.7K May 8 16:33 /usr/share/kbd/consolefonts/ter-v16n.psf.gz
    Look, Ma, no psfu.gz files!

  • T510 keeps resetting during boot unless started in safe mode first

    This is an odd, and annoying, one. As of about 3 months ago, my aging T510 started resetting during the boot and startup process, usually while the initial Windows loader was still running, but sometimes it would get beyond that to the Windows startup screen before resetting. When it does so, it's with an audible click, and then it goes right back to BIOS boot. It has been getting steadily worse to the point that it can take up a dozen tries before it manages to complete startup. Once it has succeeded in doing so, it seems to be stable. However, if it goes to sleep or hibernates (manually or on low battery), it has the same problem trying to wake up. However, if I start up in safe mode, and then restart normally, it comes up OK every time. After a safe mode startup, if it has been off for a short time (one or two minutes), it will still start up OK. However, if it has been off for several hours, then the problem reappears.
    It seems like some piece of hardware on the motherboard isn't initialising properly on powerup, but starting Windows in safe mode seems to sort it out.
    My machine is a T510 4313-CTO, bought in March 2010.
    Can anyone figure out specifically what's happening, and, more importantly, is it fixable?

    OK, I spoke too soon. Started it up this morning (in normal mode), and it reset again, so I restarted in safe mode, and looked at the Network Adapter list in device manager, an lo and behold all the WAN devices that disappeared after I disabled them then re-enabled them yesterday had reappeared, so I disabled them again, and restarted. This time as before, it restarted OK. The devices listed were:
    1394 Net Adapter
    Bluetooth LAN Access Server Driver
    Bluetooth LAN Access Server Driver - Packet Scheduler Miniport*
    Direct Parallel*
    Intel(R) 82577LM Gigabit Network Connection
    Intel(R) 82577LM Gigabit Network Connection - Packet Scheduler Miniport*
    Intel(R) Centrino(R) Wireless-N 1000
    Intel(R) Centrino(R) Wireless-N 1000 - Packet Scheduler Miniport*
    Keith & Koep USB Remote NDIS Network Device - Packet Scheduler Miniport*
    Tom Tom - Packet Scheduler Miniport*
    WAN Miniport (IP)*
    WAN Miniport (IP) - Packet Scheduler Miniport*
    WAN Miniport (L2TP)*
    WAN Miniport (PPPOE)*
    WAN Miniport (PPTP)*
    The devices marked * were hidden after successfully restarting in normal mode, although before they showed no yellow "!" before, which is the usual reason for showing normally hidden devices.
    All the Packet Scheduler Miniport entries were apparently due to the QoS Packet Scheduler driver which is installed on Windows LAN port by default, although it's rarely useful (see http://forums.speedguide.net/showthread.php?190110-Qos-Packet-Scheduler for some background). Anyway, though I tried uninstalling it (which got rid of all the Network Adapter devices followed by " - Packet Scheduler Miniport"), it still didn't cure the problem.
    That was solved following Les Bell's advice at http://securitasdato.blogspot.co.uk/2011/05/infamous-packet-scheduler-miniport.html concerning correcting the driver version numbering in the registry (I had exactly the same error). Searching through the registry in the way he suggests is a bit of a faff. I found all the relevant entries under the key HKLM/SYSTEM/CurrentControlSet/Control/Class/{4D36E972-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002bE10318} (and the same under the numbered control sets). All the usual caveats apply, i.e. don't edit your registry unless you *REALLY* know what you're doing, at your own risk, etc.

  • Set default console font early in the boot process using mkinitrd?

    Hi,
    I'm a Slackware user, and I have a cross-distro question to the Arch gurus here. I like using a custom font (Lat2Terminus16) in the console, on servers. Now I remember having defined this font as default in the Arch console when I gave it a try, and then added it not only to rc.conf, but also to the configuration file that drives the initrd creation. Thus, the console font was defined very early in the boot process.
    Now here's my question: is there any way to achieve this on a stock Linux distribution like Slackware? The man page for mkinitrd and mkinitrd.conf doesn't say anything about custom console fonts. So how do you guys do that?
    Cheers from the sunny South of France.

    Zom wrote:
    We do it by adding 'consolefont' to the HOOKS section in mkinitrd.conf.
    E: Or you could just add the relevant files to the FILES section, if you don't want to use the hook I suppose.
    Yes, but there's no HOOKS and no FILES section in a default Slackware install. My question was more or less to the Arch devs, to know if there was a *generic* (e. g. non-Arch-specific) way to achieve this.

  • [SOLVED]console fonts

    I am trying to test various console fonts as discussed here:
    http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Fonts#Console_fonts
    Testing console fonts, ie:
    $ setfont /usr/share/kbd/consolefonts/gr737b-9x16-medieval.psfu.gz
    has no effect.
    showconsolefont gives:
    $ showconsolefont
    PIO_UNISCRNMAP: Operation not permitted

    What do I need to change so that I can test consolefonts?  Thanks.

  • [SOLVED]net-profiles doesnt work during boot

    Hi,
    i have got a little problem. Im trying to set up network during boot process. My way is described in arch wiki.
    wireless_tools is instaled by base_devel during installation process. other packages that I installed are
    pacman -S netcfg wpa_actiond
    I set up the network profiles like this (file /etc/network.d/hasek_home)
    CONNECTION='wireless'
    DESCRIPTION='A simple WPA encrypted wireless connection using a static IP'
    INTERFACE='wlan0'
    SECURITY='wpa'
    ESSID='hasek_home'
    KEY='xxxxxxxxxxxxx'
    IP='dhcp'
    if I typed
    netcfg hasek_home
    everything works fine (Wi-fi drives is compiled in kernel). So im trying to set starting wi-fi in boot (in /etc/rc.conf)
    INTERFACES=(hasek_home)
    DAEMONS=(syslog-ng cpufreq acpid crond dbus hal net-profiles @netfs)
    buring boot comes this messages
    No profile started.
    Also like handmade starting
    /etc/rc.d/net-profiles restart
    net-profiles not running
    > No profile started.
    Please, what is wrong?
    Last edited by ETNyx (2010-06-09 19:03:25)

    1. Comment out INTERFACES  (and in any case, it's not for network names, but for eth0, wlan0 etc)
    2. NETWORKS=(hasek_home)
    3. Not sure if it helps, but I've never been able to background netfs successfully (remove the @, maybe).  I also have net-profiles and netfs before everything except syslog-ng in my daemons array.
    Good luck!

  • [SOLVED]Partitions not getting automounted at boot

    Hi,
    After I while I wasn't using my laptop I've made a full update (ofc I've checked for announcement for any manual intervention needed but there was nothing new). On reboot slim failed to autologin so I've switched to console to check the .Xinitrc file but, as soon as I logged in, the terminal output said it couldn't get to the user home directory because it's not there , and in fact the /home directory is actually empty. Since I didn't deleted anything of course I guess my home is probably not getting automounted or something...can this be the problem? how can I solve this ?
    Thanks in advance
    Last edited by Eit (2013-10-21 14:54:26)

    I've found in the boot log the message exactly reported in this thread.
    https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=170898
    And I've seen the guy fixed the error message warning about the root device not being rw, message which I've never sorted out becuase I wasn't getting any real problem out of that. I've read further in the topic and I've found the link to another topic related to the RW root partition problem
    https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=167153&p=4
    However, modifying the default grub config and regenerating that (as in post #95, even if post #96 says it shouldn't be necessary anymore) does not fix the problem of the root partition not being mounted as read write and neither the problem of partitions not getting automounted.
    I'm getting a bit confused.
    Edit: changing topic title to clarify

  • [solved] Console font not displaying characters properly

    I have set up /etc/vconsole.conf to read as follows, as laid down in the unofficial beginners guide (or somewhere linked to from there)
    KEYMAP=us
    FONT=ter-114n
    When I boot, I get the proper font (that's one of the terminus-font s). But if i do something like
    % mv "hi" "hi"
    the characters that SHOULD be apostrophes are in fact... The greek letter rho or something. I don't know. However, if I run "setterm ter-114n" it loads both the font correctly, as well as the mapping. I cannot for the life of me figure out where it's getting that correct mapping, or how I can just load it automatically.
    Anybody know what else I need to do to have it set itself up?

    Answer 'Yes' whenever pacman ask you about updating
    'linux-headers' in first place
    Provide headers to your kernel ie:
    linux-headers if you are using linux.
    Most of custom kernels provides own headers.
    Add nomodeset to your kernel line in /boot/grub/menu.lst , ie.:

  • [Solved] AppleTV Screen turns pink during boot

    I got my AppleTV and a Broadcom Crystal HD card, but everytime Arch boots the screen turns pink (...). It happens when it starts loading the modules (there's a flicker on the screen). I have tried all three nVidia drivers - the OSS nv and nouveau ones, and the proprietary one. Adding 'nomodeset' to the GRUB config doesn't help any (and I understood xf86-video-nv doesn't have KMS support at all anyway). I tried both the 190 and 173 series of the nVidia drivers. Since the AppleTV software works fine (and the atv-bootloader environment and Arch boot sequence until it starts loading kernel modules are the regular white on black), I think it is a driver problem. However, Google isn't telling me anything specific. I know the chip is a GeForce Go 7300.
    Suggestions are welcome.

    Thanks. After taking the plunge once more - Ubuntu 9.10 netboot - I found out the pink hue disappears somehow... Don't ask what happened :-/. When I saw that I put Arch back on and behold, it works fine now . Maybe it was something HDMI-related.

  • Aspire One D255 monitor shuts off during boot

    Every time I boot, immediately after the kernel lauches init, my screen powers off.  About 15 seconds later, it comes back on.
    The delay before coming back on seems to be independent of the init process.  If I speed init up, by the time it comes back on it's waiting at the login prompt.  If I slow it down, it comes back on while init is still running.
    I tried adding an echo -e -n '\033[13]' to my init scripts in an effort to unblank the display, but it doesn't help.
    This happens both booting of the install image and after installation. It makes it extremely hard to figure out what's going on during startup.
    Has anyone seen this before?

    I have a similar issue with my aspire one, but the display is not turning off, it is actually the backlight turning off during boot. I use fbsplash with a dark theme but a bright progress bar. During boot, it appears as if the screen has turned off, but looking closely, I can still see the progress bar.
    I have tried several different methods of keeping the backlight on to no avail.
    Personally I am thinking it is monitor signal detection during a monitor mode reset during boot, ie from console resolution switching to KMS resolution. Most monitors lose signal detection when changing mode (in my experience). Some display a "No Signal" message of some sort, some briefly turn off until signal is detected again, and in the Aspire One case, the backlight turns off. Put it down to monitor manufacturers built in power saving "features".
    Tha same thing happens when I boot windows.
    Of course, if anyone does come up with a solution, I am eagerly listening!
    Cheers.

  • How can I get the arch logo in console/terminal during boot?

  • [SOLVED] How to get NetworkManager start on background during boot?

    NetworkManager has always taken relatively long time to start during boot, presumably waiting for wlan to connect.
    $ systemd-analyze blame
    7.682s NetworkManager.service
    Previously I was able to get it to start on background by removing /etc/systemd/system/multi-user.target.wants/NetworkManager.service
    This prevented multi-user.target from waiting for NM to start and it would continue to connect on background while my boot finishes.
    However, after upgrade to networkmanager-0.9.10.0-2 that doesn't seem work any more.
    If I remove the .service file from multi-user.target.wants/, NetworkManager doesn't start during boot at all.
    enabling NetworkManager.service creates these symlinks:
    # systemctl enable NetworkManager
    Created symlink from /etc/systemd/system/dbus-org.freedesktop.NetworkManager.service to /usr/lib/systemd/system/NetworkManager.service.
    Created symlink from /etc/systemd/system/multi-user.target.wants/NetworkManager.service to /usr/lib/systemd/system/NetworkManager.service.
    Created symlink from /etc/systemd/system/dbus-org.freedesktop.nm-dispatcher.service to /usr/lib/systemd/system/NetworkManager-dispatcher.service.
    looks like enabling any other basic systemd unit links the .service file to multi-user.target.wants/ as well..
    How can I enable NetworkManager.service during boot without multi-user.target.wants/, and get it to start on background again?
    any ideas appreciated :)
    Last edited by ooo (2014-08-03 12:13:28)

    Okay, looks like this can be resolved by simply changing the NetworkManager.service type from dbus to forking.
    $ systemd-analyze blame
    173ms NetworkManager.service
    Here's the modified service file if anyone's interested:
    place it in /etc/systemd/system/NetworkManager.service
    [Unit]
    Description=Network Manager
    Wants=network.target
    Before=network.target
    [Service]
    Type=forking
    PIDFile=/var/run/NetworkManager.pid
    BusName=org.freedesktop.NetworkManager
    ExecStart=/usr/bin/NetworkManager --pid-file=/var/run/NetworkManager.pid
    # NM doesn't want systemd to kill its children for it
    KillMode=process
    [Install]
    WantedBy=multi-user.target
    Alias=dbus-org.freedesktop.NetworkManager.service
    Also=NetworkManager-dispatcher.service
    You need to disable NetworkManager.service before creating the file and enable it after so that systemd links the file from /etc/systemd instead of /usr/lib/systemd,
    there may be simpler way but I can't be bothered to go through systemd manuals any more.
    Note that this will probably break any systemd .service that actually requires network, although that was the case with my previous workaround as well.
    I won't guarantee this will work for you and won't set your machine on fire. If you have issues, simply remove the file and re-enable to go back to default
