[SOLVED]net-profiles doesnt work during boot

Hi,
i have got a little problem. Im trying to set up network during boot process. My way is described in arch wiki.
wireless_tools is instaled by base_devel during installation process. other packages that I installed are
pacman -S netcfg wpa_actiond
I set up the network profiles like this (file /etc/network.d/hasek_home)
CONNECTION='wireless'
DESCRIPTION='A simple WPA encrypted wireless connection using a static IP'
INTERFACE='wlan0'
SECURITY='wpa'
ESSID='hasek_home'
KEY='xxxxxxxxxxxxx'
IP='dhcp'
if I typed
netcfg hasek_home
everything works fine (Wi-fi drives is compiled in kernel). So im trying to set starting wi-fi in boot (in /etc/rc.conf)
INTERFACES=(hasek_home)
DAEMONS=(syslog-ng cpufreq acpid crond dbus hal net-profiles @netfs)
buring boot comes this messages
No profile started.
Also like handmade starting
/etc/rc.d/net-profiles restart
net-profiles not running
> No profile started.
Please, what is wrong?

1. Comment out INTERFACES  (and in any case, it's not for network names, but for eth0, wlan0 etc)
2. NETWORKS=(hasek_home)
3. Not sure if it helps, but I've never been able to background netfs successfully (remove the @, maybe).  I also have net-profiles and netfs before everything except syslog-ng in my daemons array.
Good luck!

  • [SOLVED] Archiso doesn't work when booting

    (Note for moderators: I don't know where to put this post, so I just put it here. Move it if it isn't in the right section.)
    Hello
    Here's my problem: I want to make a Arch live-cd with custom packages, custom hooks, ... So I searched for a way to do it. Larch works, but it's not modular. Then, I found Archiso, the official tool for Arch developers: very modular, and fits exactly to my needs.
    The only problem is that when I want to boot it (with VirtualBox), a kernel panic occurs The error is:
    /bin/run-init: opening console: No such file or directory
    Kernel panic - not syncing: Attempted to kill init!
    According to the archiso hook, it appears that when passing control to Arch Linux Initscripts, it tries to open /dev/console, and fails.
    What's the problem, and how can I fix it?

  • Wireless and USB keyboard dosen´t work during boot

    After rebooting my Imac the keyboard dosen´t respond in the boot phase. I get this famous blinking question mark at booting so I have to press C or D on the keyboard for options. The problem is that neither the wireless keyboard or my new USB keyboard work. I have also installed the firmware password utility, but it dosen´t get that far to ask for password, just this blinking question mark at startup. Does someone have an idea how to make the computer respond to the keyboard commands????

    Apple Wireless Keyboard and Mouse: About the Bluetooth Firmware Update
    * Last Modified on: December 09, 2003
    * Article: 86493
    The Apple Wireless Keyboard and Mouse software CD include a firmware updater. You can use it to update the firmware of your computer's built-in Bluetooth hardware or a D-Link DBT-120 (rev B2 or later) USB to Bluetooth adapter.
    About the Bluetooth Firmware Update
    For optimal performance of the Apple Wireless Keyboard and Mouse, you should install the Bluetooth Firmware Update. The firmware update can improve the performance of the mouse and keyboard by decreasing connection and tracking issues.
    Installing the firmware update lets you use keys on the Apple Wireless Keyboard during the startup process. This is important if you need to start up the computer from a CD, in target disk mode, or reset parameter RAM (PRAM), for example.
    It also lets you wake the computer from sleep by clicking the Apple Wireless Mouse or pressing a key on the Apple Wireless Keyboard.
    The firmware updater is available on the Apple Wireless Keyboard and Mouse software CD. It is designed to update the built-in Bluetooth hardware of some Macintosh computers. To find out which computers have this hardware, see technical document 86207, "Bluetooth: Macintosh Computers With Built-In Bluetooth". You can also use it to update the D-Link DBT-120 USB Bluetooth adapter (rev B2 or later).
    If you don't have an Apple Wireless Mouse or Apple Wireless Keyboard, you don't need to install this update.
    Important: This updater does not add these features to other Bluetooth devices, including earlier revisions of the D-Link adapter and other USB Bluetooth adapters.
    Installing the Bluetooth Firmware Update
    1. Install the keyboard and mouse software, which includes Apple Bluetooth 1.3 software. It's available on the Apple Wireless Keyboard and Mouse software CD. Double-click the file named KeyboardAndMouse.pkg.
    2. If you have a D-Link DBT-120 USB Bluetooth adapter (rev B2 or later), make sure it is plugged into one of the computer's USB ports and not a port on a keyboard, display, or hub.
    3. Open the firmware updater from the install disc. Follow the instructions that appear on the screen.

    Hi again! As Angelsoul writed, I didn't install the catalyst_hook, and now it really seems to be a kernel problem, becouse during the installation catalyst_hook:
    Failed!!! Check out log: /var/log/catalyst-install.log
    Automatic re-compilation is enabled now.
    Answer 'Yes' whenever pacman ask you about updating
    'linux-headers' in first place
    Provide headers to your kernel ie:
    linux-headers if you are using linux.
    Most of custom kernels provides own headers.
    Add nomodeset to your kernel line in /boot/grub/menu.lst , ie.:
    kernel /boot/vmlinuz-linux root=/dev/sda1 ro nomodeset

    If experiencing problems with building module or using more than

  • [SOLVED] Console Font Gets Reset During Boot

    I've recently switched to Arch Linux and am quite happy with it.  I've never had so much fun with Linux until a friend recommended Arch.  I have since installed it on both my MacBook Pro and Mac mini.  Everything has been pretty smooth, but I do have one issue.
    During the boot process, the system starts up with its default console font, per the usual.  I have edited /etc/vconsole.conf to set the font to Lat2-Terminus16 and to set the keyboard layout to Dvorak.  Here's my current config:
    KEYMAP=dvorak
    FONT=Lat2-Terminus16
    Part-way through the boot process, the font switches to use the new font.  So far, so good.  Shortly after, however, the screen gets cleared and continues to produce normal kernel messages until the screen is cleared once again and presents the boot prompt, but with the default console font as opposed to the font in vconsole.conf.  I am able to re-set the font again by using the setfont command, but this is a bit of an inconvenience.  The keyboard layout, however, is as it should be: set to Dvorak.  So, systemd-vconsole-setup.service is doing its job.
    I have narrowed down the problem to that when agetty starts, it seems to be resetting the font back to the default.  I have tried adding nouveau (my machines have Nvidia) to the array of modules within /etc/mkinitcpio.conf and rebuilding initramfs, but I get the same results.  I have also tried adding vconsole.font=Lat2-Terminus16 to the boot arguments in GRUB, but I get the same results.  This is affecting both of my machines.  I have updated them with pacman -Syu, but the problem still exists.
    I have found a workaround which is to add a service to systemd (I call it fontfix.service), set it to start after getty.target, and have it included in multi-user.target.  But is there a better way?  Or is something else other than agetty resetting the font?
    tl;dr
    agetty appears to be resetting the console font after systemd-vconsole-setup.service sets the font.  Is there a way to have agetty recognize what console font is currently is use?  Or is something else other than agetty resetting the font?

  • [Solved] AppleTV Screen turns pink during boot

    I got my AppleTV and a Broadcom Crystal HD card, but everytime Arch boots the screen turns pink (...). It happens when it starts loading the modules (there's a flicker on the screen). I have tried all three nVidia drivers - the OSS nv and nouveau ones, and the proprietary one. Adding 'nomodeset' to the GRUB config doesn't help any (and I understood xf86-video-nv doesn't have KMS support at all anyway). I tried both the 190 and 173 series of the nVidia drivers. Since the AppleTV software works fine (and the atv-bootloader environment and Arch boot sequence until it starts loading kernel modules are the regular white on black), I think it is a driver problem. However, Google isn't telling me anything specific. I know the chip is a GeForce Go 7300.
    Suggestions are welcome.

    Thanks. After taking the plunge once more - Ubuntu 9.10 netboot - I found out the pink hue disappears somehow... Don't ask what happened :-/. When I saw that I put Arch back on and behold, it works fine now . Maybe it was something HDMI-related.

  • How to diagnose NTP server problem during boot-up?

    We're having a problem on our campus network where Macs aren't able to use the time.apple.com NTP server to correct the time during boot-up. Once the user logs in, open the Date & Time pref pane causes the time to be corrected.
    I've noticed this problem for quite a while but it's really been just a minor inconvenience. Then some users started using Boot Camp and it became a bigger inconvenience because their Mac time is wrong by 4 hours when they return to OS X from Windows XP. It has now become something that we need to address because we have set up a lab with iMacs all configured with Boot Camp and set up to authenticate off of our Active Directory server, which requires that the time be correct on the iMacs when the user tries to log in.
    We'd like to monitor the network traffic on Mac during boot-up to see if we can figure out why this is happening. My person theory is that something that the network admins have the network configured to do when it first sees a new computer is causing enough of a delay in the DHCP process that the Mac doesn't have a network connection when the NTP server call would normally be made. The college has a DSL line that is not part of our network and NTP server time correction works correctly on it.
    We're looking for the best way to capture the activity on the Mac and the network traffic at boot-up. Here are the things that we're looking into.
    1) Verbose mode - Interesting looking but it goes by pretty quickly and I don't have time to read all of that info. Is this recorded in a log automatically somewhere or is there a way to capture this info?
    2) Single user mode - I haven't been able to determine whether the NTP server call should have occurred by the time I get a prompt in Single User Mode. If so, is there a command I could use here that would give me a dump of activity and network traffic up to this point?
    3) I have Interarchy which will let me record network traffic but as far as I can tell there's isn't a way to use this feature during boot-up. Am I wrong about that?
    4) Someone suggested using Ethereal which appears to require Fink when installed. I can't tell if this will work during boot for if it's an app that I can only run after logging in (like Interarchy). Does anyone know how this works?
    Any suggestions would be welcomed.
    -McD-

    Turns out it was a network timing issue. The DHCP server wasn't providing the IP address quick enough (never figured out why, though).

    On boot it doesn't connect but running netcfg wpa_suppl it works fine. I'm not sure if it is related but in my boot messages I get
    /etc/rc.d/functions: line 192: /etc/rc.d/network_profiles: No such file or directory
    Which is correct is this related have I missed something in the tuts. Its just I didn't see any mention of this part and was under the impression network.d was the correct place. Line 192 seems to be looping through the daemons so I'm not sure what is triggering this.
    Can any one point me in the correct direction as to why it is working manually but not on boot?

    The daemon is called "net-profiles", not "network_profiles".

  • G62-340US keyboard doesn't work in Windows, only during boot

    My HPG62-340US is running Windows 7 64-bit and I have been having an unusual issue with it.
    The keyboard works during the boot process. I can enter BIOS, etc  and use the laptop keyboard - but when Windows loads, the laptop keyboard becomes inoperative. The touch pad works OK, and the lights work on the keyboard, but the keyboard does not respond when you press any key.
    I can attach a USB keyboard, which will work OK. When I press the "caps lock" on the USB keyboard, the light comes on the "caps lock" on the laptop keyboard, but the laptop keyboard does not work. It also will not work in safe mode.
    I reinstalled Windows, hoping that would correct the problem, but it did not.
    Help!
    Jim

    About 9 times out of 10, the keyboard wouldn't work.  The 1 time that it did, I logged in and removed the password.  Updating Dropbox seemed to solve my issue and it had been fine for over a month.  However, over this past weekend I decided to install the new Trackpad++ drivers to enable gestures in Win 8.  After installing PowerPlan and then Trackpad++, everything was working ok.  I decided at this point, I would set a password for the account again.  Once I did that, I was back to having keyboard problems again.  When I finially was able to get in, I removed the password.  Upon a reboot, the keyboard didn't work.  I removed PowerPlan and Trackpad++, still didn't work.  I uninstalled Dropbox...still didn't work.  I disabled all 3rd party startup applications, and it still didn't work.  I got fed up, and last night I wiped out Win 8 and reloaded Win 7.  I'll wait until Apple officially supports it, and even after that, I'll give it some time before upgrading again.
    I will note that when I upgraded to Win 8, I did not do a clean install.  I didn't want to go through the hassle of reloading software and setting up the OS again.  Maybe a clean install would have been better.  I was at the point of frustration where I didn't even care to find out and I was just going to go back to Win 7.
    Sorry that I'm no help. If you figure anything out, let me know.

  • [SOLVED] NET_PROFILES=('menu') doesn't work at boot time

    Hi I've created two network profiles to change eth0 configuration on my laptop according to where I am.
    The problem is that NET_PROFILES=('menu') (in rc.conf) doesn't work at boot time: the profile select dialog doesn't appear.
    It works only if I do a /etc/rc.d/network restart.
    Here is the relevant part of my rc.conf
    lo="lo 127.0.0.1"
    eth0="eth0 192.168.0.3 netmask 255.255.255.0 broadcast 192.168.0.255"
    INTERFACES=(lo eth0)
    # Routes to start at boot-up (in this order)
    # Declare each route then list in ROUTES
    # - prefix an entry in ROUTES with a ! to disable it
    gateway="default gw 192.168.0.1"
    ROUTES=(gateway)
    # Enable these network profiles at boot-up. These are only useful
    # if you happen to need multiple network configurations (ie, laptop users)
    # - set to 'menu' to present a menu during boot-up
    # - prefix an entry with a ! to disable it
    # Network profiles are found in /etc/network-profiles
    NET_PROFILES=('menu') #### I tried even without quotes with the same result!!
    By the way, I tried this on three different machines (one is always up to date, the others aren't)  with the same result.

    iphitus thanks for your prompt reply, but I already have dialog installed. In fact the menu appears if I do a network restart, but it doesn't at boot.

    This is an iPad replacement because the ne that I had before rejected my sim card so Apple sent me a new ne for free. I received it last Wednesday and the home button didnt work correctly. And today, a week later, it just stopped working completely, whenever I press it, it doesnt work. What should I do? Are there any steps that I can take to try to solve this button issue?

  • [SOLVED] broadcom-wl works during install, but not after.

    I have this macbook air which I'm beating into submission, and it has a broadcom wifi chip. I followed the instructions here for the installation and it worked perfectly. After booting into my newly installed system I do the same, but when I do 'modprobe wl' it fails with:
    # modprobe --verbose wl
    insmod /lib/modules/3.14.5-1-ARCH/extramodules/wl.ko.gz
    modprobe: ERROR: could not insert 'wl': Invalid argument
    I checked with 'lsmod' and none of the blacklisted modules are loaded. I have no idea how to proceed but it should work since it worked during installation. Any pointers would be greatly appreciated!
    EDIT: As  user Namarrgon on irc pointed out, I needed to rebuild the broadcom-wl package. The reason it worked in the live usb and not in the installed system is probably because the installed system had a later kernel than the one on the live usb.

    At least for rt2870sta, it's a retarded bug in Linux that was introduced in 2.6.31 and is still not fixed. It works in the live environment because it has an older kernel.
    Kernel 2.6.31 module conflicts
    The 2.6.31 kernel caused the rt2870 driver to conflict with other wireless modules. The fix in this thread says that you need to blacklist the rt2800usb rt2x00usb and rt2x00lib modules by modifying the MODULES array in /etc/rc.conf
    MODULES=( ... !rt2800usb !rt2x00usb !rt2x00lib ... )

  • [SOLVED] How to get NetworkManager start on background during boot?

    NetworkManager has always taken relatively long time to start during boot, presumably waiting for wlan to connect.
    $ systemd-analyze blame
    7.682s NetworkManager.service
    Previously I was able to get it to start on background by removing /etc/systemd/system/multi-user.target.wants/NetworkManager.service
    This prevented multi-user.target from waiting for NM to start and it would continue to connect on background while my boot finishes.
    However, after upgrade to networkmanager-0.9.10.0-2 that doesn't seem work any more.
    If I remove the .service file from multi-user.target.wants/, NetworkManager doesn't start during boot at all.
    enabling NetworkManager.service creates these symlinks:
    # systemctl enable NetworkManager
    Created symlink from /etc/systemd/system/dbus-org.freedesktop.NetworkManager.service to /usr/lib/systemd/system/NetworkManager.service.
    Created symlink from /etc/systemd/system/multi-user.target.wants/NetworkManager.service to /usr/lib/systemd/system/NetworkManager.service.
    Created symlink from /etc/systemd/system/dbus-org.freedesktop.nm-dispatcher.service to /usr/lib/systemd/system/NetworkManager-dispatcher.service.
    looks like enabling any other basic systemd unit links the .service file to multi-user.target.wants/ as well..
    How can I enable NetworkManager.service during boot without multi-user.target.wants/, and get it to start on background again?
    any ideas appreciated :)

    Okay, looks like this can be resolved by simply changing the NetworkManager.service type from dbus to forking.
    $ systemd-analyze blame
    173ms NetworkManager.service
    Here's the modified service file if anyone's interested:
    place it in /etc/systemd/system/NetworkManager.service
    [Unit]
    Description=Network Manager
    Wants=network.target
    Before=network.target
    [Service]
    Type=forking
    PIDFile=/var/run/NetworkManager.pid
    BusName=org.freedesktop.NetworkManager
    ExecStart=/usr/bin/NetworkManager --pid-file=/var/run/NetworkManager.pid
    # NM doesn't want systemd to kill its children for it
    KillMode=process
    [Install]
    WantedBy=multi-user.target
    Alias=dbus-org.freedesktop.NetworkManager.service
    Also=NetworkManager-dispatcher.service
    You need to disable NetworkManager.service before creating the file and enable it after so that systemd links the file from /etc/systemd instead of /usr/lib/systemd,
    there may be simpler way but I can't be bothered to go through systemd manuals any more.
    Note that this will probably break any systemd .service that actually requires network, although that was the case with my previous workaround as well.
    I won't guarantee this will work for you and won't set your machine on fire. If you have issues, simply remove the file and re-enable to go back to default
