[SOLVED] /dev/video0 no longer shows up in my system.

I have been running arch on my laptop for about a year or two with no problems. The laptop I have has an inbuilt webcam that I used to be able to use fine.
I haven't tried to use it in about a month or so but I just did and it appears completely blank. I try to check things are alright and can no longer find /dev/video0 which is where it used to show up.
looking at the wiki page it says to identify your webcam with lsusb but I assume that is only for usb webcams rather than inbuilt ones. I also tried looking at my dmesg but can't find anything looking like a webcam. How can I debug this and where should I look for information on how to set this up?

I just were about to do so, but tu ensure that there isn't already a new thread about that i searched for it and found a also solved thread, but as i saw the user trying to accses his webcam by typing fswebcam, i tried it too and came to the point that i didn't have installed that. To see if i would get the same errormessege as he did i installed ist via pacman and tried again to run it:
$ fswebcam
--- Opening /dev/video0...
stat: No such file or directory
then pressed the webcamkey...
$ fswebcam
--- Opening /dev/video0...
stat: No such file or directory
...pressed it again...
$ fswebcam
--- Opening /dev/video0...
Trying source module v4l2...
/dev/video0 opened.
No input was specified, using the first.
Adjusting resolution from 384x288 to 352x288.
--- Capturing frame...
Captured frame in 0.00 seconds.
--- Processing captured image...
There are unsaved changes to the image.
so at last there wasn't any error at all.
after that i tried typing
$ ls /dev/ |grep video
video0
so my webcam was there again, and worked in cheese too. The only other actions i did befor taht were again a pacman -Syyu which only updated my flashplugins and git and also a system reboot (nautilus stopped working and after restarting nautilus it wasn't recognising inserting my microSD, or a USB-flashdrive, so i tried to reboot). After all of this i don't know why it helped
pacman -Syyu couldn't couse that as far as it din't update anything the webcam is depending on
a systemreboot just reloads all kernelmodules and restarts the applications - the new modules after kernel update had to be loaded before as i did serveral reboots since then
installing fswebcam can't change anything that couses /dev/video0 to appear
But thank you anyway!

• Ethernet card no longer showing in ifconfig [solved]

Hey,
Normally I don't have any problems with my networking, but this morning my wireless decided not to work. I haven't made made any changes in the past couple of days, so unsure what has caused it. Last Syu was on Thursday and every day including up until last night was fine.
So spent a while trying stuff out and stressing my tiny little brain for ideas, quick version is I did this:
netcfg: said interface didn't exist.
ifconfig: didn't list the interface (wireless is usually eth1)
lsmod: confirmed the module (ipw2200) was loaded
lspci: confirmed the card was there
After copying the output of the above commands plus the obligatory rc.conf onto usb to move to this machine (and just before pushing <submit> on a much larger post than this :-) I decided to check the mac address listed in ifconfig with what is on the sticker under my machine. Voila! My wireless has actually moved to eth0. OK, that's that solved. (Wish I checked that first though...)
But that means that the reason that my wireless card is now eth0 instead of eth1 is because my old-skool wired ethernet card is no longer there to be numero 0. Why isn't it working? lsmod shows that the tg3 module is loading (it's an Intel card with Broadcom chipset in a Thinkpad T43) , but it no longer shows up in ifconfig. lspci is not showing it (see below), only the wireless card comes up. Does this mean the hardware is borken? What else can I do to check the card?

Yeah, doesn't give me anything about the ethernet card, but does show the wireless one. No, hang on, just found it. Hmmm, didn't see it before, but I was grepping for 'net' then.
$ dmesg | grep -i eth
eth1: Tigon3 [partno(BCM95751M) rev 4101] (PCI Express) MAC address 00:12:34:56:78:9a
eth1: attached PHY is 5750 (10/100/1000Base-T Ethernet) (WireSpeed[1])
eth1: RXcsums[1] LinkChgREG[0] MIirq[0] ASF[0] TSOcap[1]
eth1: dma_rwctrl[76180000] dma_mask[64-bit]
OK, so it is at eth1 now, that makes sense since I put ipw2200 right at the beginning and tg3 right at the end of the MODULES array in rc.conf to avoid the system getting crossed up while trying load them too close together. Thanks B, so at least we know something is happening at boot time.
Btw, my assumption is that ifconfig shows hardware once it is loaded correctly, is that right? But apart from the modules, what else do I need to do to get it showing up in ifconfig?

• XP no longer shows up as a startup disk

After upgrading to leopard today, my XP partition no longer shows up as a startup disk.
I had/have my windows partition on it's own drive that was NOT created with bootcamp. I pulled my osx disk from the my mac pro and installed windows on the disk i had in bay 2 using 100% of the disk (ntfs). after installing the bootcamp windows drivers, i reinserted the osx disk and all has been well for the last 4 months,... until the upgrade today that is.
Now, when i go to the 'Startup Disk' preference Windows is no longer an option. the disk still shows up in Finder and I can navigate around the file system.
Anyone have any ideas on how I can get it to show up again? I'd really rather not have to reinstall if i can avoid it.
thx.

I have exactly the same problem (well, maybe).
I have installed MacFUSE and ntfs-3g. I don't know if this is of any relevance, because I don't know if it was working directly before I installed them.
I have my OS X and NTFS volumes on the same physical disk. I also had to install Windows twice because I buggered it up the first time (formatted the partition as FAT32 and ran into a bunch of disk errors).
I also notice that in WinClone I have 2 Untitled Volumes at /dev/disk0s3 and /dev/disk1s1. /dev/disk0s3 seems to be the legit Windows NTFS partition, but I have no idea what /dev/disk1s1 is about. I don't know if it's been there all along or not but perhaps it is confusing matters and stopping the legit Windows volume/installation from being detected...? Should that second volume exist at all? It doesn't exist according to the Disk util.
edit: I used fdisk just to have a look at the two untitled partitions.

I can hold the option key upon startup and manually enter Windows like that, but I'd prefer to be able to restart and boot Windows without having to hold a key.
Apart from not seeing the Windows boot volume in the system prefs pane, Boot Camp (and the rest of Leopard) has been excellent. I am impressed at the level of apple hardware support for windows. It seems to be much better than most native PC hardware.
I am dying for an answer. It's a fairly minor problem in the grand scheme of things, but **** it's frustrating.

• ITunes 11.0.1 no longer shows my TV Shows that are in the cloud

After upgrading to iTunes 11.0.1, it seems my TV Shows that are in the cloud, but not downloaded locally no longer show up in my library.  I verified that Show TV Shows in the cloud is selected and if I goto the iTunes Store and look under purchased they are there.  Also, if I delete an episode of the TV show and send it to the trash, it no longer shows that it's available in the cloud, it just gets removed from my library.

I experienced the same issue. I am familiar with it from previous versions of iTunes and located the correct "Show iTunes Purchases in the Cloud" checkbox on your screen capture. Wasn't on mine. I decided to reinstall iTunes 11.0.1 and, as you can see from my screen grab, it is there now.  Problem solved.

• Dual Layer no longer shows up

After wiping my hard drive and reinstalling all software, the dual layer option in iDVD 5.01 no longer shows in the settings. Why not? It was working before.
Two years ago I purchased a newer Pioneer 109 Dual Layer bruner for my iMac, I installed the French patch back then, and the Dual Layer option showed up, and I burned doual layer just fine. After my reninstall of softwares I again installed the French patch, but this time, ...no Dual Layer option. Dang.
Anybody know what I'm doing wrong?
Thanks,

iMovie 6 solved all my problems.
WOW! What a great upgrade! And not simply because of the Dual Layer issue. It seems like quite a big jump. Very nice.

• Itunes no longer shows my remote speakers

Since loading leapard my remote speaker option in itunes has gone. Airport utility now longer shows my two airport express base stations which I use for streaming my music. Only my AEBS shows in the utility. Can anyone offer advice please.

Hi,
I have the same problem but managed to solve a small part of it, namely the AEX not showing in Airport Utility. If you join your Mac via ethernet cable to the AEX it will be seen in the Airport Utility and can be configured.
Unfortunately - at least in my case - iTunes still does not recognise the remote speakers after the procedure.

Now all of a sudden the D50 no longer shows up automatically as a drive in IPhoto when I plug it in, and does not do an automatic updated download. The D50 drive does show up in Finder fine. Imac G5   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   Airport Extreme

Just an FYI - I solved this myself by backing up all my data and reinstalling Mac OS X 10.4. I suspect my iMac got hit by a very quick and sudden power outage/spike, and despite having an advanced surge protector I think my OS got corrupted slightly. So rinstalling OS X solved it (at recomendatio of local Mac Dealer)

• My internal speaker no longer shows as an output option; has anyone experienced this?

My internal speaker no longer shows as an output option; has anyone encountered this before?

Hopefully one of these steps should solve the problem.
1. System Preference > Sound > Output > Internal Speakers
        Highlight  Internal Speakers / Headphones
Make sure Mute is not enabled.
2. Remove the headphone.
If you see red light in the headphone port, plug the headphone
in and out of the port 5 or 6 times to flip the microswitch inside.
Sound output may be stuck in the digital mode.
3. Reset PRAM.  http://support.apple.com/kb/PH4405
4. Reset SMC.     http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
        Choose the method for:
"Resetting SMC on portables with a battery you should not remove on your own".
5. Applications > Utilities > Audio MIDI Setup
        Audio Devices window
        Side Bar
        Click the Built-in Output.
Under Mute any of the boxes checked? If so, uncheck it.
Option click the speaker icon, if present and select Internal Speakers.

Thanks for all (Ocean20 & Courcoul) who replied.
Reset the device did not help me but it does triggers me to attempt to resend the PDF file attachment on email--and it works the 2nd time.  My problem is now solved.
The Adobe Reader is very helpful--it allows me to scroll through the document easily, unlike iBooks, where I cannot scroll straight up or down.

• LogiTech QuickCam webcam does not create /dev/video0

I have followed the Arch Webcam Wiki, and read numerous posts to get my QuickCam working and I can not seem to get it to create the /dev/video0 .
dmesg sees that it is connected:
usb 1-1: new full speed USB device using uhci_hcd and address 4
usb 1-1: configuration #1 chosen from 1 choice
I am using the spca5xx driver which I got from http://mxhaard.free.fr/spca5xx.html and I was able to compile and install it with no problem.
lsmod | grep spca shows:
lsmod | grep spca
spca5xx 672208 0
videodev 7808 1 spca5xx
usbcore 113796 3 uhci_hcd,spca5xx
lsusb shows:
Bus 002 Device 001: ID 0000:0000
Bus 001 Device 004: ID 046d:092e Logitech, Inc.
Bus 001 Device 002: ID 05e3:0606 Genesys Logic, Inc.
Bus 001 Device 001: ID 0000:0000
Bus 003 Device 001: ID 0000:0000
I tried recompiling the kernel as it was suggested in a few of the WebCam posts in this forum but I still do not get /dev/video0.  Any ideas??
Thank you.

Thanks for your help.  I took the webcam back and exchanged it for a QuickCam Fusion.  This cam uses the the USB Video class drivers available at http://linux-uvc.berlios.de/ and I was able to get the webcam to work, but only in Ekiga, no other apps support it at this time.  I will just wait until applications are updated and support it.
Thank you.

• [SOLVED] /dev/parport not there any more

See my final post for "solution"
Original question:
I'm a fairly new newbie to kernel issues.
/dev/parport is no longer showing up.  It's been several months since I've used it. (I use it for bit banging a microcontroller - which worked great several months ago)
Can someone give me suggestions on how to start back tracking what has changed?   I'm sorry for the open ended question.  But, it just kinda worked before and I didn't need to know how /dev/parport got created.  I just used it bit-banging away with avrdude and all worked fine.
Now, no /dev/parport on bootup.
lsmod shows no parport or parport_pc or ppdev
If I modprobe ppdev, then parport and ppdev show up in lsmod report, but there is still no /dev/parport
Hopefully, this is a no-brainer and I need to just create some /dev entry or something like that and the normal boot up process will connect everything up and start the right modules.
What's frustrating is that is was there several months ago - working fine.  Of course I've done pacman -Syu since then - without much attention to details.
Thanks for you patient consideration of my hopefully silly question

Lone_Wolf,
dmesg | grep parport reports nothing.  There is no reference to parport or ppdev in the dmesg output.
lspci -vvv reports the following:
04:05.0 Communication controller: MosChip Semiconductor Technology Ltd. PCI 9835 Multi-I/O Controller (rev 01)
Subsystem: LSI Logic / Symbios Logic 1P2S
Control: I/O+ Mem+ BusMaster- SpecCycle- MemWINV- VGASnoop- ParErr- Stepping- SERR+ FastB2B- DisINTx-
        Status: Cap- 66MHz- UDF- FastB2B+ ParErr- DEVSEL=medium >TAbort- <TAbort- <MAbort- >SERR- <PERR- INTx-
Interrupt: pin A routed to IRQ 17
        Region 0: I/O ports at ccc8
        Region 1: I/O ports at ccd0
        Region 2: I/O ports at ccd8
        Region 3: I/O ports at cce0
        Region 4: I/O ports at cce8
        Region 5: I/O ports at ccf0
        Kernel driver in use: serial
        Kernel modules: parport_serial
I'm not sure what all of that means.  But there is no reference to the parallel port.  Too bad, I don't have that type of printout from when it worked six months ago.
The card is a Rosewill RC303  - 2 serial ports and 1 parallel port.  Is "Region 5" above the parallel port?
Like I said earlier WindowsXP thinks it's ok.  So, either Windows didn't check well or Arch/udev is missing some aspect of the PCI card that it used to find on bootup.
any ideas on how to dig more?

• Cannot identify '/dev/video0': 2, No such file or directory

hi! i have a cheap webcam that used to work perfectly on arch, but some update broke it because /dev/video no longer exists (i don't know which upgrade, it has been some months since i used it last time)
when i try to run my webcam applications, it goes like that:
[nbcjr@universo ~]$ sonic-snap
Cannot identify '/dev/video0': 2, No such file or directory
[nbcjr@universo ~]$ sudo ls /dev/
adsp dvd hdb kmsg loop7 psaux ram2 snd ttyS2
audio fb hdb1 legacy mapper ptmx ram3 sound ttyS3
cd fb0 hdb2 log md pts ram4 stderr urandom
cdrom fd hdb3 loop md0 ram0 ram5 stdin vc
cdroms fd0 hdb4 loop0 mem ram1 ram6 stdout vcc
cdrw fd0h1200 hdb5 loop1 misc ram10 ram7 tts zero
console fd0u1440 hdc loop2 mixer ram11 ram8 tty

disk floppy input loop5 nvidiactl ram14 rd ttyS0
dsp full kmem loop6 port ram15 shm ttyS1
thanks!

That would have been the last kernal upgrade, wiped out my USB mouse which caused XWindows to crash, They had to change back to the UDEV system. I believe the maintainer for the devFS system quit but anyways it was taken out of the kernal.
What I had to do was to change the configuration from /dev/mouse to /dev/input/mouse0, i beileve you can also do ln -s /dev/input/mouse0 /dev/mouse. Try looking in /dev/input/ for your camera.
