[SOLVED] e4defrag skipping home

I've just noticed something curious that seems to have changed recently.
When I run:
sudo e4defrag -c /
sudo e4defrag /
The root directories are processed but the home directories seem to be skipped. If I specify the home directory, then all's fine and it works on the home directories. But I'm curious as to why this seems to have changed. I thought the "/" argument as above would include "home". I've got Arch on 3 PCs and it's now consistently this way with all of them.
I've searched the wiki, the forums and google and I'm coming up a blank.  Any ideas would be very much appreciated.
Many thanks,
Jules

Thanks for this. Here's my fstab from my laptop:
# /etc/fstab: static file system information
# <file system> <dir> <type> <options> <dump> <pass>
# /dev/mapper/lvmpool-root
UUID=53755bd8-cdb3-4490-8101-b3e83d0463b5 / ext4 relatime,data=ordered 0 1
# /dev/mapper/lvmpool-home
UUID=798097bd-cdcb-4610-bacf-39dcc8642e5f /home ext4 relatime,data=ordered 0 2
# /dev/sda1
UUID=e08e6ce4-ee3d-4fdc-8271-8b19f1ddfa31 /boot ext4 relatime,stripe=4,data=ordered 0 2
# /dev/mapper/lvmpool-swap
UUID=7d5d6aec-72e5-4de4-b168-8525b0f7d3e2 none swap defaults 0 0
But the same is happening on another pc where I don't use lvm...
Thanks again!

  • Has anyone solved itunes skipping?

I posted a little while ago about this problem and it seems I was not the only person experiencing the problem of itunes sounding like a skipping cd. A number of different suggestions were made, and I've gone through all of them to no avail, and want to know if anyone knows how to actually solve this problem.

I uninstalled all of the Apple software on laptop, restarted the laptop and reinstalled the latest iTunes download.
iTunes then started working and I didn't get the message.
But I've just installed Quicktime to get my iTunes videos working and now I get the error message again

  • [Solved] Grub Skips Menu

I've just got a new laptop (Asus M50) and I've been trying to get Arch Linux running with encrypted / and /home partitions by following this tutorial: http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Sys … r_dm-crypt
I installed Grub to my /boot partition (which is unencrypted), but upon reboot I was presented with a blank screen and a flashing cursor.  I suspected Grub wasn't installed correctly, so I reinstalled it by running (from the ArchLive CD):
    # grub-install --root-directory=/mnt/boot /dev/sda
Which seemed to run fine, and Grub now actually loads at startup, but it immediately presents me with a grub prompt.  Now I can boot manually from this, for example:
    grub> root (hd0, 0)
    grub> kernel /vmlinuz26 root=/dev/sda3 ro
    grub> initrd /kernel26.img
    grub> boot
Allows arch to boot without a hitch.  As far as I can tell, my /boot/grub/menu.lst is correct so I don't understand why grub is skipping the menu, and a few hours of searching Google haven't helped much.
    EDIT
GRUB looks for its configuration file as soon as it is loaded. If one is found, then the full menu interface is activated using whatever entries were found in the file. If you choose the command-line menu option, or if the configuration file was not found, then GRUB drops to the command-line interface.
Following up on this, ls /boot/grub | grep menu.lst locates the file, but grub> find /boot/grub/menu.lst returns Error 15: File not found.  So does anybody know why there would be this discrepancy?  I have a feeling that fixing this will fix my problem.
    EDIT 2
I'm getting closer... I found a mistake in my previous edit, because grub> find /grub/menu.lst returns (hd0,0), so it was found.  I forgot that grub's root was not necessarily the root of the filesystem.  So now I can type grub> configfile /grub/menu.lst and it will bring up the menu, but it still doesn't load the menu before going to the prompt, and reinstalling grub yet again doesn't fix this.

Aha, success.  This guy (http://www.linuxquestions.org/questions … ad-562236/) seemed to be having the same problem as me, and his fix worked for me as well.  I'll just retype it here in case anybody else has the same problem, but the original post is here.
    Reinstall grub:
    grub> root (hd0,0)
    grub> setup (hd0)
    Checking if "/boot/grub/stage1" exists... yes
    Checking if "/boot/grub/stage2" exists... yes
    Checking if "/boot/grub/e2fs_stage1_5" exists... yes
Running "embed /boot/grub/e2fs_stage1_5 (hd0)"... 15 sectors are embedded.
    succeeded
    Running "install /boot/grub/stage1 (hd0) (hd0)1+15 p (hd0,0)/boot/grub/stage2 /boot/grub/menu.lst"... succeeded
    Done
Now for whatever reason the final line (Running "install...") is not correct so if you run it again, but remove "/boot" from "/boot/grub/menu.lst" everything works:
    grub> install /boot/grub/stage1 (hd0) (hd0)1+15 p (hd0,0)/boot/grub/stage2 /grub/menu.lst
Reboot and it should go straight to the menu.

  • [SOLVED] Space in /home is not what I choose during partition

Hello. I have a very strange problem:
I installed archlinux two days ago and partitioned as you see here:
But what I really get is:
    (translated: Content=82Gb, Free Space=108Gb  => Total Space=190Gb)
The first image is what GParted says to me. The second is what Nautilus file manager display.
I never seen something like this before. What could be?
    EDIT & SOLVE:
I just logged in as root and noticed that the free space of my /home was what it has to be. Then I re-logged in as normal user and it was the same.
    It seems to be solved.

    Hi Allan,
    Thanks for the quick reply!
Should I leave both the HomeHub and the new white Openreach modem switched on, or would you recommend a re-boot of each device at this stage?
I have left everything as it was when the engineer left the house, and I know excessive switching on/off of the HH will be a problem for the line to stabilise.
    Cheers,
    Neil.

  • SCP solved on my home built

I managed to solve the SCP problem with my home built rig and thought that I would share my story with the board. I am not saying that this will work for everyone else - or that it is an ideal solution - but it worked for me!
I have a home built media centre setup which had an old Audigy 2 ZS card in it and had been using for years without issue. To cut a long story short, I decided to upgrade to a Fatalty XFi card to try and get a best out of my rig when watching movies and playing games.
My rig contains 3 TV tuners (2 USB & PCi), 2GB RAM, a single GEForce 6 card, a 550W PSU, adaquate cooling, iTrigue 5600 speakers and now a Fatalty sound card (with the I/O board fully connected up). I am running MCE 2005 fully patched with all rollups and fixes currently available.
The installation of the card was painless and I installed the latest and greatest drivers off of the Creative website (v2.09.000 dated 9 Sept 06). Needless to say, I started to notice the often reported Snap crackle and pop syndrome when watching DVDs, watching TV, playing games and listening to MP3's.
I tried tweaking every setting the driver to try and identify a cause but, it didn't matter what setting I changed, I still had the same symptoms.
My next step was to try switching PCI slots so I used the Creative uninstaller and completely uninstalled the card, powered down, moved the card to another slot and re-installed. The same problem still persisted!
I should clarify at this point that my rig does not have an nForce mobo or chipset (I am Intel based)...the only nvidia component in my rig is a GEForce 6600 GT graphics card which runs via a PCIe6 interface.
My next step? The Creative posting indicated that the problem with the nForce mobos was down to PCI timings / latency so, I pulled the only other PCI device out of my rig. I uninstalled and removed the rarely used PCI TV Tuner card (a Hauppauge 00 analog / digital hybrid). To my utter amazement, my SCP problem was gone and now 3 weeks later, I can honestly say that I have not had a single SCP?mummer out of my card / speakers and the sound quality has been impeccable.
Now I know that this is not an ideal solution - I have had to remove one piece of hardware to get another to work - but, in my case, the TV tuner was hardly used and my 2 USB tuners still work fine without producing the SCP issue I was originally having.
[size="3" face="Times New Roman">I guess all I can conclude from this is that is isn't just nForce mobos that can cause this issue as it was a TV Tuner in my case - a Hauppauge 00 to be specific. It begs the question whether it is an incompatibility between Creative and Hauppauge kit or something more wider ranging - I know the PCI tuner card was pretty intensi've PCI traffic wise as it sends all audio & visual information over the PCI bus!

I've been crashing right and left, with BSODs.  At first I thought it
might be my ASIO drivers, so I bought a new audio interface.  Still
    crashes.
That sounds like a hardware problem, not a PR problem. Look at the second included link: Some suggestions...

  • [solved] a "permanent" home for srcdir, via makepkg

I use a very low-bandwidth connection at home... it is as good as dial-up. When updating packages from AUR, I see many of them get a lot of data via git and hg. Some remember to limit the data using --depth=1, and some don't -- but that's beside the point Currently, I see that it is all downloaded to a directory in /tmp, and deleted soon after the package is installed. Some other packages download the source tar, and build from it. If there is any error in building it, it deletes all that it has done, and I have to download it again to attempt to fix it.
    3 questions:
    1. In makepkg, if I set the srcdir to /usr/src, and remove the rm -rf $srcdir, are there any downsides to doing this? (... besides the fact that I would have to clean up /usr/src for old and/or deleted packages myself, and that an update to pacman will over-write my changes.)
    2. Can the pacman source be changed to make this a configuration option? (... defaulting to srcdir in /tmp.)
    3. Or even better... can yaourt be changed to have an --import option for updates?
I could have gone ahead and made the change (in 1) on my own system... but I am quite new to Arch, and am not aware of the various interdependencies. I did not want to risk running ahead with this and cluttering up (or nuking)  my system beyond repair.

It won't overwrite your changes because makepkg.conf is in the backup array ('Backup Files' at the bottom)

  • [SOLVED]Folding at Home issues.

Solution: It was a mixmatch of opencl drivers. I had opencl-nvidia installed with nvidia-304xx drivers. Once I changed opencl-nvidia to opencl-nvidia-304xx it fixed the problem and started folding. Thanks for the help!
Hey guys, trying to get my FAH up and running but I'm running into an issue with my nvidia cards. I tried posting on FAH's forum but they just tell me I need to have nvidia proprietary drivers installed...which I do. And the support seems to end there. Looking for some help. Here is the error log that shows up when I try and fold on my two gpus (evga gtx660, one normal, one SC)

  • [Solved] Apps in /home/user/bin won't run

    As per subject.
To run such command I have to give full path of /home/user/bin/app because simple app is not being recognized.

    Lockheed wrote:
Well, obviously "user" in the path is just replacement of my username, lets say the real location of my bins is /home/smith009/bin
I am not really sure what either of us suggested to do. Can you rephrase?
    kazuo suggested you run
    export PATH="/home/user/bin:$PATH"
and try again. Of course you need to change to the real path, e.g. /home/smith009/bin.
Lockheed suggested to change it to
    export PATH="$PATH:/home/user/bin"

  • [SOLVED] Contents of home folder on desktop in Gnome Shell

A few days ago, after installing some updates (I believe gnome-themes-standard was amongst them) and restarting, I found that the contents of my home folder were displayed as icons on my desktop, and when I go into Activities mode, the background is black. Searching around hasn't turned up any results... any ideas?
In case there's any potential graphics related issues wrt the blank background, the system is a laptop with a HD3000 GPU in a Core i7 CPU.
    Last edited by ch_123 (2013-03-04 10:00:07)

You can probably remove the desktop icons by opening dconf-editor and going to org.gnome.desktop.background. Once there, untick show-desktop-icons and restart the Shell.
I don't know about your other issue though, have you tried with another theme?
EDIT: The issues are related; my background also just went black. Just untick the above option, re-set your wallpaper and finally restart the Shell; that did it for me.

  • [SOLVED] Finding missing home folder

Ok, I just got some new hardware and was finally able to try out an x86-64 distro, which made me want to give Arch another go in hopes that some old compatibility issues I had would have died with my old hardware (which they greatfully did).
My issue started out where after install my old home folder from Mint was apparently missing. So what I did was try mounting my home partition to a temp folder to see what it showed and I was surprised to see that my old home folder was there, but my current one was not. I then looked closer at my current home folder and noticed that the free space shown for it was closer to what my / partition had. This got me wondering if something was wrong with my fstab file, so I went in that and found that when I added noatime flags to a few of my partitions that I mis-typed it for the partition for my home folders (noaatime instead of noatime).
I corrected this mistake, saved, and rebooted and found I wasn't allowed to start up my desktop, because now my current Arch user home directory is missing, presumably orphaned on my / partition.
What I would like to know is if there is a way to recover this now missing folder. I would like to recover a downloaded file in it and perhaps relocate the whole thing into the proper partition for my home directory. Also, even if I can't it's not a big deal, besides the fact that I would want to purge the folder if it is orphaned and still taking up space in my / partition.
If anyone can help point me in the right direction, I would be very grateful.

I may have totally misunderstood, but I think that your old mint home dir is on a file-system that you mount on /home.  But, your Arch home dir is in /home on the root file-system.  So when you mount /home it "hides" the Arch home dir underneath the newly mounted file-system
To fix (if this is correct)...
    1) log out of all sessions
    2) log in as root
    3) # umount /home
    4) # cd /home
At this point, your old mint home dir should be gone and the new Arch one available
    5) # mv <your_username> /
    6) # cd /
    7) # mount /home
    8) # cd /home
    9) # mv <your_username> <your_username>.old
    10) # mv /<your_username> .

  • [SOLVED] Moving boot, home and var partition post-install

I've installed my whole Arch on a single 10GB partition because of low disk space. But now that I've gained a lot of disk space, I want to move /boot, /home and /var to separate partitions.
I'm going to use live CD, so everything will be unmounted.
    home and var:
I assume it's just a matter of moving files and changing fstab.
    boot:
I assume, I'll have to move all files to new partition and re-install grub/burg.
Is there anything more to it?

You need to edit your fstab file, copy files to the new partitions (check for permissions!), and restore grub(2), see wiki.
If you do not have custimized Arch, you could do a reinstall, but I'm not responsible for that tip. So be sure to have a backup or something like that.

  • [SOLVED] /boot and /home in /

Hello, i don't exactly know how to explain this, it's the first time, yesterday, I was re-installing Arch, and everything ok, but know I see that the partition /home and /boot did not mount as always, i have to mounted and put the passwd to be able to enter them, i don't know how to make the /boot partition "invisible" and the /home to be inside the /.
I don't know if I explain this well and if someone has gone through this could help me please, i don't have the time to do another install.
    Thanks.

Your /home partition is LABELED "/boot" -- but it is mounted as the /home partition. Your root partition is both labeled root and mounted as such. the LABEL /home is actually mounted at /run/media/root/_home.
Make sure you are not reading the LABEL but reading the mount point when fixing this.
(Also, is your swap "on"? My output of the same command is (and I didn't label any of my paritions, so that column is blank):

  • [Solved] BOINC (Seti@Home) Problem :(

    Hi guys,
I have installed Boinc with the intention of running the Seti project on it.
However there's where my luck ran out. I can't seem to do anything with it no matter what I try.
    I installed Boinc as per:
    pacman -Sy boinc
This went off without a hitch so I then add my user to the "boinc" group.
However when i run boinc_gui the interface pops up but It says
"(X) Error" above "retrieve current status"
I can't click "add project" or "attach to manager" or anything,
I'm sure its something obvious I'm missing but Ive looked all over the net and messed about
with a lot of permissions and so on. I'm lost!
    Any thoughts?

  • [Solved] Flashplugin skipping

Solution was to do a complete reinstall.
When watching streaming flash videos while using awesome or i3, if the mouse is not moved for around 10 seconds the video freezes and the audio repeats the last second on loop until the mouse is moved. The video then jumps forward to where it would have been had it not frozen and pauses while the audio plays everything up to that point, then both continue. This issue doesn't appear when using E17.
Looking at the output of chromium and firefox, flash reports no errors other than failing to open the VDPAU backend (which I believe I shouldn't need).
Flashplugin, chromium, firefox, awesome, i3, and E17 were all installed using pacman -S 'package name'. All packages are the latest versions available.
    My systems is as follows:
CPU: AMD Phenom II X4 945
    Ram: 4Gb
graphics card: AMD HD4890 using xf86-video-ati
Until recently I had been using lightspark from the AUR as a flash replacement and had tried gnash in the past as well.
I was wondering if anyone else has had this issue or knows how to fix it as I can't seem to find any information on this issue.

I seem to recall having this problem when I first set up the system about a year ago, I think this was a reinstall after using windows for a while. Since then I've stopped using AMD catalyst and have been using lightspark.
I'm wondering whether it's something that broke way back during the install or in the transition between AMD to xf86-ati (maybe something with the custom repos), and whether it's worth just wiping and reinstalling.
Any idea whether it's possible to get flash to be more verbose?

  • [SOLVED] Changed an option in /etc/updatedb.conf

    Hello all,
I started using locate to search my files. However, it never showed files in my /home directory which is, obviously, the directory I search most. Running updatedb --debug-pruning I found out that it didn't add /home to the database because it's an "autofs" filetype:
    ┌─[jente @ lappy ~] 23:54:27
    └─■ sudo updatedb --debug-pruning
    `/home' (32 on 18) is `/' of `systemd-1' (0:27), type `autofs'
    Skipping `/home': in prunefs
So, I edited /etc/updatedb.conf and removed autofs from the PRUNEFS line. I never found any documentation on this and thus, I don't know if this is the correct way of solving this. Hence this post; I would just like to get some feedback on whether or not I fixed this the right way.
    Thanks in advance, guys!

Hey! Thanks for your input. My /home is actually already there:
    # /etc/fstab: static file system information
    # <file system> <dir> <type> <options> <dump> <pass>
    tmpfs /tmp tmpfs nodev,nosuid 0 0
    # /dev/sda1
    UUID=60eb73f7-635c-4b3e-9d6a-8bb49aee739a / ext4 rw,relatime 0 1
    # /dev/sda2 LABEL=home
    UUID=4470b151-db99-4586-a652-398e0e8995cb /home ext4 rw,relatime,noauto,x-systemd.automount 0 2
If your /home is on an internal disk, why use automount?
