[SOLVED] Failed to access the Internet after disabling networkmanager

How can I get access to the Internet after networkmanager is down? I disabled the networkmanager and uncommented the static IP settings I used to use and reboot, but I'm still unable to get access to the Internet. (Failed to ping 8.8.8.8, which means the problem isn't DNS.)
Here's how this happened:
I used to get access to the Internet on my ArchLinux machine by setting up a static IP address in /etc/rc.conf. This worked fine. Then one day I needed to do something difficult without a networkmanager, so I installed the network-manager-applet via pacman, which worked fine as well, until one day after I ran pacman -Syu and rebooted, many programs, including the network-manager-applet are unable to work, saying the system is missing libpng14.so. My workstation was connected to a wireless connection at that time (the same one before my last pacman -Syu and reboot), and I tried to run pacman -Syu again and the network seemed to still be working. So I didn't take it as a big problem at that time.
But now, after I brought it to work (where I connect to the Internet via a wired network and a static IP), I found myself unable to get access again to the Internet, even after I removed networkmanager from the DAEMONS in rc.conf, and uncommented the static IP settings that used to work. And It's not DNS problems since I'm unable to ping 8.8.8.8 or any other known IPs directly (it says destination host is unreachable).
Here's my rc.conf files, the IP address and gateway stuff couldn't be wrong so hope you don't mind I use something like XX.XX.XX.XX instead:
LOCALE="en-US.UTF-8"
DAEMON-LOCALE="no"
HARDWARECLOCK="localtime"
TIMEZONE="Asia/Shanghai"
KEYMAP="us"
CONSOLEFONT=
CONSOLEMAP=
USECOLOR="yes"
MODULES=(wl)
UDEV_TIMEOUT=30
USEDMRAID="no"
USEBTRFS="no"
USELVM="no"
HOSTNAME="lastland"
interface=eth0
address=XX.XX.XX.XX
netmask=255.255.255.0
broadcast=XX.XX.XX.255
gateway=XX.XX.XX.XX
NETWORK_PERSIST="no"
DAEMONS = (syslog-ng network crond dbus kdm alsa)

It would be helpful if you could share the output of ip addr
It might show the data you have obfuscated, so either check it to see if it is rational, obfuscate the bits you don't want to share, or trust us
Of course, if the address starts with 10, 172, or 192, it does not really matter if you share it with us as it is a private network address anyway.
Also, the output if ip route will be helpful.  Also, can you ping the address you think is the address of your machine from your own machine?
edit: typo
Oh thank you for the hint! The ip addr command really helps me figure out that my eth0 MAC address is not the right one. Though I don't know how it happens, I succeed to get back to the Internet and reply this post via my ArchLinux workstation. Thank you!

  • Unable to access the internet after upgrading to 10.5.2

    Since I've upgraded to 10.5.2 recently, as in yesterday, my ability to connect to the internet has changed DRAMATICALLY!!! Basically to not at all! It seems that there is ALLOT of of traffic on the forums about this problem. But no responses seem to be given from a moderator or tech support.
    I've had to downgrade the wireless to G or use the ethernet connection to get online. And that is just barely. I have NO problems with using my WIN computers on the same router. This all started when 10.5.2 arrived. Even when the network sys pref's reported back that I had an IP address on the router, it STILL didn't connect.
    Does anyone from Apple read the forums???? It appears not. And it appears that Apple don't really care as the problem seems to have been going on for awhile!

  • I can no longer open Firefox to access the internet after my niece has been on the PC and changed a lot of settings?? I get an error code and told to click ok to terminate

    The error code is: 'The instruction at "0xf5f0db62" referenced at "0xf5f0db62".

    I have tried removing the old application of Firefox and downloading a new version but to no avail.

    After this, you probably will be buying some access control software...
    First, make a backup of your computer for safekeeping. To back up Firefox, see [https://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Backing+up+your+information Backing up your information].
    Next, try starting Firefox in Firefox
    [http://support.mozilla.com/kb/Safe+Mode Safe Mode]. Be careful not to "reset" anything permanently if you didn't back up.
    Does that fix it? If not, try creating a new (blank) profile: [http://support.mozilla.com/kb/Managing+profiles Managing profiles].
    To move key settings like bookmarks from your damaged profile to the new profile, see: [https://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Recovering+important+data+from+an+old+profile Recovering important data from an old profile].
    Hope this helps.

    Hi dinodog4
    Go into Options>Advanced Options>Browser and make sure your Default Browser Configuration is set to Internet Browser.  This will ensure you are using your BlackBerry data service.

  • When wireless connection lost during surfing, firefox will not access the internet after connection is restored.

    While surfing the net on my laptop (windows vista home premium, all updates current), if the wireless internet connection is lost while a page is loading, firefox will NOT connect to any websites at all when the connection is restored. Also, if I try to shut down firefox, it will appear to close, but if I try to re-start it again, it will tell me "firefox is already running", even though it's not. I try to go to windows file manager and shut down firefox.exe manually, but even with that it will not shut down, it's like it's stuck in some sort of "loop". The only way to recocile it is to completely re-boot the system, which takes forever, because firefox.exe doesn't want to shut down even in re-boot.

  • After a router reset, can't get second PC to access the internet

    I had my wireless router (WRT54G) and printserver working fine and then a problem with my DSL had me resetting both boxes (yeah I should have know better). I've fought back and have everthing working for one PC that has an internal wireless but my other PC has  a  WPC54G wireless card and I can't get it to work. Both PCs are XP, SP2. The Linksys appl says that it contacted the access point but can't access the internet. It has always been flaky about this but usually gets to the internet. It does have a good IP address, the WEP key and channel are right but 'no joy'. I can ping the router and the printserver but I can't bring up the router's home page but I can print to the printserv. I did not change the modem to 'bridge' yet.
    TIA....jack

    What is the IP Address you are getting on the computer...?It should be in the range of your router.IP Address should be 192.168.1.x, Subnet Mask : 255.255.255.0, Default Gateway : 192.168.1.1 (assuming your router is 192.168.1.1)...
    If you get the above mentioned IP Address, Subnet and Gateway Address then you should ping the Gateway, type ping 192.168.1.1 and press Enter...If it gives you request timed out then disable any firewalls, security software on the computer...
    If you get 4 replies then type ping 4.2.2.2 and press Enter, if you get request timed out, then you need to upgrade your router's firmware...If you get 4 replies then type ping yahoo.com and press Enter...If you get replies for Yahoo then you should get the Internet after adjusting the browser settings...
    Adjusting Browser Settings : Open an IE, click Tools >> Internet Options, then delete all files, cookies, history, forms...Goto "Connections", make sure Never Dial a Connection is checked, click on LAN Settings and make sure all the options are unchecked...Once you are done click on O.k...Close the IE and re-open it...
    If yahoo times out then provide static DNS on your WAN Connection...
    Click on the Start button >>> Settings >>> Control Panel >>>Network Connections- Right click on the icon for Wireless Network Connection and go to properties- On the 'General' tab select 'Internet Protocol TCP/IP' and click on the Properties button- Select 'Use the Following DNS Settings' Preferred DNS 4.2.2.2 Alternate DNS - 4.2.2.3>>Click on Ok button to Save and Click on "Close" on main Properties window...You should be able to go online...

  • After upgrading to the latest version of firefox. I can no longer access the internet and all traces of Mozilla Firefox are gone from my computer. I have no access to the internet, my home page or my e mails. What can be done??

    I have been using firefox for years. I downloaded the latest version and at the conclusion of the down load I was refussed access to the internet. Something about Proxy???? I checked my firewalls and security and they said that mozilla was allowed but everytime I attempt to gain access I am refused. I cant access the internet and I cant download another program to access the internet. I uninstalled Firefox and attempted to reinstall but after uninstalling Firefox I have no means to reinstall because there are no traces of it on my computer and I no longer have access to the internet. What do I do? I cant access my e mails, stored messages, favorites etc etc.

    No. After I select "Choose" the dialog box expands to provide only three choices. This is a new bug. I have only seen it in the past week or so, but it is maddening. I have observed that, while the Mozilla Foundation focuses on trivialities like which search engine should be the default, the Firefox application becomes buggier and buggier. Most of my family has switched to Chrome, and I will be following shortly. Firefox used to be a great program. Not any more. Getting assistance with a problem has also become very difficult.

  • I can't access the internet with Firefox on my computer (Windows 7 PC). I have used Firefox as my browser for 1 year but 5 days ago it stopped working even though Internet Explorer worked fine. I can't solve the problem and need some help.Randy Brown

    September 26, 2011
    Dear Mozilla,
    I am having some difficulty accessing the internet with Firefox on one of my PC computers. I normally use Mozilla Firefox as my web browser and google is my homepage and gmail is my email system. The operating system is Windows 7. For over a year this system worked perfectly but a few days ago it stopped working. When I launch Firefox now I get the message that that website (www.google.com) is unavailable. In fact, I can’t access any website and I am blocked from the internet entirely within Firefox. My internet connection is fine because Internet Explorer works fine. I can access google and any other website within that web browser. I have investigated all the security issue I can manage and found no smoking gun. I’ve tried uninstalling and reinstalling Firefox to no avail. Is Windows 7 compromising the effectiveness of Firefox? Any suggestions or other assistance you can offer would be appreciated.
    Sincerely,
    Randy Brown

    hello - my ipod touch worked well until a couple of months of non-use. Now, I cannot access the internet thru my wifi. All my other devices have no such problem. I have tried resetting wifi, "forgetting network" turning wifi off and on....nothing works....can anyone help?

    - Reset the iPod. Nothing will be lost
    Reset iPod touch: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
    least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Power off and then back on the router.
    - Reset networks settings: Settings>General>Reset>Reset Network Settings
    - iOS: Troubleshooting Wi-Fi networks and connections
    - iOS: Recommended settings for Wi-Fi routers and access points
    Does the iPod see the network? Error message? Does the iPod connect to other networks?

  • Problems after downloading the lastest version of iTunes for my iPod Touch. Now whenever I switch on my laptop and access the internet I get an error message. 2nd time this has happened and I'm fed up trying to fix it. Anybody having similar problems?

    I've downloaded iTunes 10.5 onto my iPod Touch, no problems but I've now got a constant error message on my laptop everytime I switch it on and access the internet. The message is "The procedure entry point xmlTextReaderConstName could not be located in the dynamic link library libxml2.dll"
    This is the 2nd time this has happened. Last time iTunes Support called and we ran through a load of checks to no avail. The only option was to delete iTunes completely off my laptop and go for a new download of it. Can anybody tell me how to do it - didn't write it down last time, silly me, never thought it would happen again. Also sent an email to iTunes Support - waiting for a response.
