[SOLVED] Finding the IP of a device

Alright, so I installed arch on a computer and set sshd to run in the background. At the moment, the computer doesn't have a monitor, and the other computer in my room is a laptop (so no screen switching). I want to be able to log into the monitorless computer via ssh.
Anyway, both computers have a wired ethernet connection to a switch in my room (which is needed to get any connection at all by my university). They both get a dhcp-leased IP that is NOT on a subnet, meaning every device shows up as an independent IP when queried.
So, my question is this: is there a way I can figure out the IP of the monitorless server running ssh, so I can log into it? I know the hostname, if that helps.

Sorry about the wait--I took mdickinson's advice and did a ping sweep with the cord unplugged. Originally, I had done it for all 255 addresses in the subnet and it had been impossible to figure out anything.
raf_king, fumbles: My wording was awful, partially due to the fact that half of what I said was wrong: what I meant to say was that every IP is a <b>public</b> IP (and not behind any sort of NAT), and while the switch in my dorm room might physically be a subnet of its own, address-wise the fourth octet corresponds to a subnet consisting of multiple rooms. Perhaps this will explain it:
[root@xaiwos ~]# ifconfig eth0 | grep inet
inet addr:130.126.66.100 Bcast:130.126.67.255 Mask:255.255.254.0

And now I just remembered that I forgot to change the hosts.allow file on that other computer....crap....

  • [Solved] Find the module that claim a device

I have seen that Mandriva has a nice functionality in the "Mandriva Control Center". It gives the name of the module that claim a given device. Is there a command I can use to have the same functionality on arch. I do not want to install the Mandriva control center on arch. This is a big GUI tool, the purpose of which is to configure Mandriva. What am I looking for is a small CLI tool that give this precise functionality.

  • Find the usage for each device on the router per day or month (megabytes per mac address)

    HI --
We have a single cable connection and a router network with over 10 unrelated users in our complex.  We want to keep usage fair, the network unstressed and to identify machiines that might have viruses or otherwise be using more than the owner is aware of. We are running a WRT1900AC.
Does the router itself keep statistics for usage over time per ip/mac address?  If so, how can we access these statistics?  Can the router be instructed to keep this, say in firmware?
If not is there a program available (free or reasonably cheaply) that can poll the router and produce an estimate of usage?
    Any advice?
Others may wish to know what is going on in their network.
    Many thanks,

The router has an Internet Usage feature in its Network Map. You may use this feature to monitor the bandwidth consumption of each device. Check this link:

  • How to fix the old Apple Moble Device Support?

How can I update or reinstall iTunes if it always stops due to not being able to find the old Apple Moble Device Support. I've tried to manually or use the auto update and it always stops saying the Apple Moble Device Support can't be found. I've tried to remove the program, two are listed in the windows add/remove, but I just get "The feature you are trying to use is on a network resource that is unavailable."
I can't find it anywhere to add, remove or repair. I uninstalled iTunes hoping to start fresh but now it won't install again for he same reason. Now I have NO iTunes, old or new.

    (1) Download the Windows Installer CleanUp utility installer file (msicuu2.exe) from the following Major Geeks page (use one of the links under the "DOWNLOAD LOCATIONS" thingy on the Major Geeks page):
    http://majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=4459
    (2) Doubleclick the msicuu2.exe file and follow the prompts to install the Windows Installer CleanUp utility. (If you're on a Windows Vista or Windows 7 system and you get a Code 800A0046 error message when doubleclicking the msicuu2.exe file, try instead right-clicking on the msicuu2.exe file and selecting "Run as administrator".)
    (3) In your Start menu click All Programs and then click Windows Install Clean Up. The Windows Installer CleanUp utility window appears, listing software that is currently installed on your computer.
    (4) In the list of programs that appears in CleanUp, select any Apple Mobile Device Support entries and click "Remove", as per the following screenshot:
    (5) Quit out of CleanUp, restart the PC and try another iTunes install. Does it go through properly this time?

  • BIOS-GPT grub cannot find the root device in LVM setup

    Greetings Arch Linux Community,
Recently I started my journey of installing Arch Linux on my VMware Workstation.
I successfully installed the non-LVM instance not long before I noticed the advantages of LVM, then I just started a new Arch Linux setup with LVM.
However, after following the Beginners' Guide and LVM Guide carefully, I ran into a problem on boot that I cannot solve by myself due to my poor knowledge on boot/grub.
    Here is the error message:
ERROR: device '4b28d500-8ed3-4fe5-ad26-97fbb01f979b' not found. Skipping fsck
ERROR: Unable to find root device '4b28d500-8ed3-4fe5-ad26-97fbb01f979b'
The error message itself is pretty clear; saying that the root device specified by my grub.cfg cannot be found and thus cannot be loaded.
However, I'm 100% sure that the device is actually there and just for some reason grub cannot see it.
Below please see the info from lsblk, pvdisplay, vgdisplay, lvdisplay, and some related info from fstab, grub.cfg and mkinitcpio.conf:

Hi Efka, I used grub-install and specified "/dev/sda" for argument. What I understand is that the sda is the identifier for the hard disk where all the sdaX reside. And if you look into the output of my lsblk, you will see that there is one partition sda1 that has no filetype, label and UUID on display; that is actually the bios boot partition where, as I understand, the grub code embeds itself.
We can have different partition scheme to deploy and having a separate partition for /boot is just my personal preference ans it should work as well.

  • Running FOXFIRE 6.0 on a Windows 7system and when I go to Sync I can not find the option of adding another device. Where is it?

Trying to sync another computer to sync, but going from Tools to Options to Sync I can not find the Add A Device choice. have looked everywhere but can not find the frame that allows me to enter the codes from the second computer. Have installed the sync function on the first computer and have received a sync key.
What am I missing and where do I find "Add A Device"?

Thanks for trying to help solve a problem in Foxfire's sync function. I guess I haven't done a very good job describing the problem so I'll try again.
My desktop computer is running Windows 7 and Foxfire 6.0. I had no problem establishing a sync account and obtaining the Foxfire Sync Key. Now I would like to sync my Asus Eee Transformer Tablet running Android 3.2 and Foxfire 3 (for Android). On the tablet I go to Sync, then Connect, and get the three-box code to be entered on the desktop computer where the sync account was established. So far, so good.
I then go back to the desktop computer and in Foxfire click Tools, then Options, then click on the Sync symbol, then click on Set Up Foxfire Sync, which is the only option available. I am then taken to a page with two options: Create A New Account, or Connect. sunce I have already created an account I click on Connect. I then get a page with a three box code and am told to go to the other device (the tablet) and select Add A Device. Unfortunately, on the tablet the only choices available are Sync and connect, which returns a three box code. No where can I find a page or an option fo Add A Device and enter the three box code.
So, in summary, I can not find w page to Add A Device and enter the three box code on either the desktop computer or the tablet. If all else fails, I guess I can go back to day one and establish a new sync account on the desktop computer, or completely give up on the sync, which is a nice feature but one that doesn't work.

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, or by a peripheral device.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode* and log in to the account with the problem. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:
Shut down your computer, wait 30 seconds, and then hold down the shift key while pressing the power button.
When you see the gray Apple logo, release the shift key.
If you are prompted to log in, type your password, and then hold down the shift key again as you click  Log in.
*Note: If FileVault is enabled under OS X 10.7 or later, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t boot in safe mode. Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on certain Macs. The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
There will be no audio output in safe mode. The question to be answered by the test is whether any devices are listed in the Sound preference pane. After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

Pay no attention to iinami, the amount of replies to people saying their handsets must have been jailbroken everytime iTunes throws out an error is tremendous. (Clearly you don't need to have any real knowledge to get to level 3 on these forums, let's hope apple's geniuses know a lot more than some of their customers.)

    Solution below.
    Error 9
This error occurs when the device unexpectedly loses its USB connection with iTunes. This can occur if the device is manually disconnected during the restore process. This issue can be resolved by performing USB troubleshooting, using a different USB dock-connector cable, trying another USB port, restoring on another computer, or by eliminating conflicts from third-party security software.

I solved this by reset of the Wifi (unplug cable and power to both modem and wifi ... wait 60 sec ... plug in modem cable and power ... plug in wifi power and LAN to modem ... restart AppleTV and Mac ... Turn Home Share 'OFF' in iTunes then back "ON" ... it took ~60 sec for the AppleTV to pick up my Mac in computers.

The MainStage 3 Audio preferences window will not find the Aggregate Device input.  I have both an Apogee Jam and a MOTU Mike Ultralight in USB ports.  The Audio aggregator finds them and treats them as one device.  The Aggregate Device does not show up in either Logic or MainStage.  However, unlike Logic, MainStage does not show "System Settings" an input device.

  • How do I find the device for my iPad 2? When I found the app, it stated that it worked with iPhone, iPod, and iPad2.

I downloaded the iPad2 app for Firefox, have gone into my MacBook, opened it up, set the preference, and then it wanted the numbers for the device. Where do I find the numbers?
Then I found no iPad2 listed. The information on the App Store stated that it definitely was available for iPad2, but no luck syncing it.
I do have the bluetooth up and running, but will that serve to sync? Should I go ahead and run a normal sync.

Whow what a shame, I thought this iPad was going to be terrific.  Guess I'll get out my trusty Cannon from now on, lots less hassle.

Java 6 you can't as Apple maintains it, and Java 7 you could if you uninstall it and Oracle provides the earlier version which they likely won't his last update fixed 37 remote exploits.
Java broken some software here and there, all you'll have to do is wait for a update from the other parties.

  • Windows Could not find the Driver for your Apple iPod USB Device (5G 30GB)

    I have a 8GB iPod Nano. My roommate has a 30GB 5G Video. Black.
My iPod syncs flawlessly. His is not recognized by Windows or iTunes. Every time we plug in the iPod, it prompts us for the driver. I tried to install the update apple mentions through the windows process, but after going through the tedious Windows Genuine Verification process, I was told that the update didn't apply to my computer.
We use a Lenovo Thinkpad T60p, which shipped with Windows Vista Business.
We are running iTunes 7.3.1.3, and there are no windows updates available for the computer.
    I have...
    ...reset
...reinstalled 7.3.1.3 (over and over and over)
...tried different USB ports. (Early on, we saw it once after swapping ports).
...tried turning off the ability of the computer to 'Turn this device off to save power."
I have also verified that the iPod works on my work Dell Lattitude D620 running XP, and that it's not the cord, as we've used the cord that came with my Nano as well.
So, the problem seems to be with vista, as many people seem to have had. The best thread I found that deals with this was http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=995793.
But even after having tried everything, I still have an unrecognizable iPod.
When I run iPod diagonostics, everything seems okay, except for the iPod connection, which says failed. I've had difficulty working with the iPod service under Computer/Device Manager - it doesn't ever seem to stop or start, with the iPod plugged in or not.
And interestingly enough, the FAT32 external harddrive that I use to back up my data exhibits exactly the same problem ("Windows could not find the driver for your USB Mass Storage Device). This device worked great in XP, and even odder, I have a FAT32 partition of the main HD as a swap space between my VistaOS and my Ubuntu installation.
Do I have to chalk this up to another issue with Windows Vista? What bothers me there is that you're a ping-pong between windows support and apple support - no one really owns up the problem.

Bill, I've been stuck in this loop for 3 months since buying a new laptop with Vista Basic. I've tried everything to no avail. I don't know what else to do apart from buying a cheap PC running XP. Let me know if you manage to find a solution and I'll do the same.
    Regards. Adam
