(SOLVED)fork() and memory sharing?

Let me get this straight, when you fork() a child process this is what happens:
A copy of the parent isn't made just yet-- instead the child has read only rights to the actual parent's memory page. Once the child executes a write call the stack and heap pages are copied and marked with read and write rights.
Questions:
What happens to the shared memory segments? Is this section shared prior and post to the copy/RW escalation? How does the stack, heap and shared memory segments differ?

Think of shared memory segments as their own entitites, truly separate from the process that created them.  They aren't copied during fork() because they are not technically part of the process's address space.
A pointer to the shared memory segment may be copied if one exists before you fork, which would allow the child to access the segment created by the parent, but the segment itself is ... well it's shared

  • Shared Memory and Memory Paging - VDI 3.2

    Hello
What metrics have been identified in the performance and optimisation of these new features for VDI 3.2 ?
We are looking for substantiated indicators with respect to builds for sites of various user-base sizes v's SunRays on desks.
    Regards
    Jeremy.

    good Question!
Also I'm confused of how much memory is really used and what is shown where (top vs. Desktop provider Info in VDI Admin vs. what I see/assigned in the VDesktop)
sometimes balooning works like a charm and I can overcommit lots of memory running several desktops. Other times running one single Win7 Desktop (1GB RAM assigned) on a SF4140 /w 8G Ram installed eats up 75% of my memory.
Right now the Win7 VDesktop I'm using has
1024 MB assigned by the VDI-Manager with 50% memory sharing
The manager displays ~ 3,8 GB Used, as the Win7 VBox is the only one Running in an All-in-One configuration and takes roughly 2.2-2.5 GB w/o a running VM, I assume that 1.2 or 1.3 is accounting on the Win7 Wbox
in top the VBoxHeadless process shows up with 1891MB memory usage
Which one to trust? Somewhat hard to forecast.
could someone shed some light on this?

    zoltan

  • Large SGA On Linux and Automatic Shared Memory Management problem

    Hello
    I use Oracle10gR2 in linux 32bit and I use http://www.oracle-base.com/articles/linux/LargeSGAOnLinux.php manual
for larger SGA it works fine but when I set sga_target parameter for using Automatic Shared Memory Management
    I recieve this error
    ERROR at line 1:
ORA-02097: parameter cannot be modified because specified value is invalid
ORA-00824: cannot set sga_target due to existing internal settings, see alert
    log for more information
and in alert log it has been wrote
Cannot set sga_target with db_block_buffers set
my question is when using db_block_buffers can't use Automatic Shared Memory Management ?
Is any solution for using both Large SGA and Automatic Shared Memory Management ?
    thanks

Cause: SGA_TARGET or MEMORY_TARGET set with DB_BLOCK_BUFFERS set.

  • Mds process shoots up CPU and Memory

I upgraded to OS X Mavericks about a month ago and ever since, have had to disable Spotlight due to shooting CPU and Memory. The only way to get my Mac to a usable state is to add Macintosh HD to Spotlight privacy list to prevent indexing. The moment I do that, CPU and Memory get to normal.
Here is what Memory/CPU looks when I am doing nothing on my Mac and all apps are closed:

  • What is the difference between Azure RemoteApp Basic vs Standard Plans in terms of compute cores and memory?

So our customer has asked us to compare compare Amazon Workspace and Azure RemoteApp offerings for them to choose from. While looking at Amazon Workspace, it clealy defines bundles with specific CPU cores, memory and user storage. However, Azure RemoteApp
only specifies user storage and vaguely compares its basic vs. standard plans in terms of "task worker" vs. "information worker"
I tried looking up its documentation but couldn't find specific CPU cores that are dedicated per user in basic vs. standard plans. I have following questions:
Can anyone point me in the right direction or help understand how many CPU cores and memory are dedicated (or shared) per user in each plan?
Our customer would most likely need a "custom" image for their custom apps. Is it possible for us to choose specific CPU cores and memory for the users to be able to run their apps in azure remoteapp?
In case i am misunderstanding the basic difference between AWS workspace and Azure RemoteApp, i'd appreciate some help in understanding it as well.
    Thanks!

    Hi,
With Azure RemoteApp users see just the applications themselves, and the applications appear to be running on their local machine similar to other programs.  With Workspaces users connect to a full desktop and launch applications within that.
    1. Azure RemoteApp currently uses size A3 Virtual Machines, which have 4 vCPUs and 7GB RAM.  Under Basic each VM can have a maximum of 16 users using it whereas under Standard each VM is limited to 10 users.  The amount of CPU available
to a user depends on what the current demands are on the CPU at that moment from other users and system processes that may be on the server.
For example, say a user is logged on to a VM with 3 other users and the other users are idle (not consuming any CPU).  At that moment the user could use all 4 vCPUs if a program they are running needed to.  If a few moments later
the other 3 users all needed lots of CPU as well, then the first user would only have approximately 1 vCPU for their use.  The process is dynamic and seeks to give each user their fair share of available CPU when there are multiple users demanding CPU.
Under the Standard plan a user will receive approximately a minimum of .4 vCPU assuming that the VM has the maximum number of users logged on and that all users are using as much CPU as possible at a given moment.  Under the Basic plan the approximate
    minimum would be .25 vCPU.
    2. You cannot choose the specific number of cores and memory.  What you can do is choose the Azure RemoteApp billing plan, which affects the user density of each VM as described above.  If you need a lower density than Standard you
    may contact support.

  • MS 6390LE and Memory

    I have:
    MS 6390 LE w/ lan v 1.00
    AMD XP 1700 w/hsf
    30G WD hard drive 5400rpm
    128 M ddr266 memory
Antec case with an Antec sl300 PSU
    floppy
    zip 100
MS 8348 Dragonwriter CD RW(currently not working yet, but am working on that too)
Everything seems to be working, and I flashed the bios to the current version not for the pcb 2.0, and I have this question,
When booting up the memory test only shows 98 m memory and 32+ shared memory. After it boots up, and I am in Windows 98se, it only shows 96 m memory and the system is at 70%.
Have I done something wrong, or is there something else wrong? The machine doesn't seem to run as fast as I would expect it to, but then the HD is a slower model. And I can't get the cd rw to work, but that is a different problem i posted to another forum.
    Thanks!

No, it doesn't appear that you have done anything wrong.  You do have 128mb (96+32=128). The reason for the bios showing 98mb and windows showing 96 is in how it counts megabytes.  Windows see's megabytes as 1 000kb.  Your bios see's mb's as 2^10=1024kb.  This accounts for the discrepancy you see when you boot up and your 128mb stick is seen as 131mb.
As for system resources, you only have 96 mb RAM available for Windows.  Add up what you have running in the background as well as what Windows normally needs and you're about right.

  • Error message about firewall and internet sharing

hello all i have a question regarding the use of firewall and internet sharing.
I have a PMG5 connected to internet through Airport. I've linked an Xbox 360 via the built-in ethernet port in order to access Xbox Live. I had to open specific UDP ports on the OS X firewall but it now works fine. However, in the Sharing Preference Pane, Internet Tab, i still get an error message saying that my Internet Sharing is disturbed by the settings of the firewall and sharing services, it says that i did not activate "personal web sharing" in the first two tabs...but i DID ! And there's no way to get rid of this error message.
I know I know some may consider it's not a real problem because it's just an error message while the connection actually works fine but well, I tend to hate error messages when they're not supposed to show up. So if anyone know the answer, thanks in advance...
    Good day to everyone
    Vince, Paris...

sorry about the delay in replying, was kinda busy
well trashing the pref files was useless and i tried with another user, same thing. As for the second opinion, the problem was not about which port was used cause as i said the connection sharing works fine and anyway it was the correct port that was checked, it's just that i get an error message while there is no apparent error and everything works fine, i'm told that personal web sharing is not enabled but it is...
Anyway as i said, it's probably not a real matter, as long as it works...which brings me to another thing. I've created a special protocol in the firewall to enable a proper dialog with the xbox. it's basically the same thing you do for ichat AV when you have video connection problems, you track down the concerned UDP port using terminal, you allow traffic and all... The protocol for the xbox worked great for some days, but now it seems it's not enough, the game set keeps trying on another port and i constantly have to update the protocol or deactivate the firewall...and enabling back all UDP traffic is not enough to solve it.
In a way i think everything is linked, the initial error message when everything was fine and the current trouble. Any idea?
    thanks
    Vince

  • Screen sharing and file sharing not working on LAN

This is not a Mavericks specific problem since it existed before I upgraded to Mavericks.  I have a LAN that consists of 3 MBPs and 1 MacPro.
Local screen sharing and file sharing works fine on all of these computers except for one MBP.  From this MBP I am able to connect to all of the other computers for screen sharing and file sharing.  But I can't connect to this particular MBP for screen sharing or file sharing from any of the other Macs.
This MBP shows up in the left hand side column under "Shared" on all the other computers.  But I am unable to make a connection from any computer to the problematic MBP.  I get the message, "There was a problem connecting to the server "xxxxxxxx".  The server may not exist or is unavailable at this time".
I have tried toggling off and on screen sharing and file sharing with no effect.  One probably pertinent strange thing that I notice is that under the Screen Sharing set up the green button next to "Screen Sharing:On" is green.  But the message under it states:
"Other users can access your computer's screen
at vnc://johnmacbookproretina/ or by looking for “John MacBook Pro” in the Finder sidebar."
The problem is that my computer name is "John MacBook Pro" and the LocalHostName is "JohnMBPr.local".  I believe that at some point in the past the computer name and/or LocalHostName was "johnmacbookproretina".
Similiarly, under File Sharing I am informed:
"Other users can access shared folders on this computer, and administrators all volumes, at “afp://johnmacbookproretina” or “smb://johnmacbookproretina”."
I would appreciate any help I could get to resolve this perplexing issue.  Thanks.
    John

I've finally been able to solve my own problem.
File sharing and screen sharing on the problematic MBP was being blocked by firewall rules that had been set up several weeks ago when I had installed a trial version of DoorStop X firewall software.  I had previously trashed the app when the 30 day trial ended.  I did not realize that the software had left a set of firewall rules in the Library/StartupItems folder.  Among other things, the rules were set to deny access to the computer on the ports used for file sharing and screen sharing.  Once I trashed the DoorStopStartup folder in the StartUpItems folder all the connection problems resolved with a computer restart.

  • Profile Performance and memory

    Hi, guys
I am trying to analysis my Profile Data for the Profile Performance and memory.
When I check the data for VI Time, I found there are same VIs with different VI Time, what is that mean
The reason why I am doing this is because I am going to add pulse model for my VI, so I need to know the relationship between my all instruments and time, Am I in the right track
    Thanks

It looks like the timing had a resolution of 15.6 ms, which I think is common on some flavors of the Windows OS.  Note that the average times on some of those VIs is zero.  This suggessts that for many of the 1878 runs the time was probably recorded as zero and a few were at 15.6 ms.
This is one of the limitations of the Profiler.

  • PCI bus and memory ranges in Device Manager.

    Hello,
I looked in device manager on my netbook that has no dedicated graphics card (so no dedicated VRAM) and uses shared system RAM as
it’s video buffer, the following memory ranges have been assigned to the on board card -
If I then change the view in device manager to ‘Resources by type’, Windows shows the following memory ranges to be on the PCI bus
Basically all the memory ranges that have been assigned to the card are shown to be also on the PCI bus. I would understand this with
a dedicated graphics card where data needs to be forwarded onto the PCI bus but I know my netbook is using system memory as the frame buffer which then I assume the card reads from there.
Do you know why these addresses are shown to be on the PCI bus, is it just because the card is a PCI device so it’s easier for Windows
just to display them as if they were on that bus, and anything written to these address will still go into system memory?
I know it’s a bit of a random question but I’ve been trying to find an answer online and can’t seem to find anything.
    Any help would be appreciated,
    Thanks.

    Hi,
For your question: Do you know why these addresses are shown to be on the PCI bus, is it just because the card is a PCI device so it’s easier
for Windows just to display them as if they were on that bus, and anything written to these address will still go into system memory?
    Yes.
You can check the hardware memory usage via Resource Monitor.

  • OSX 10.6.8 and Internet Sharing to Ethernet

I am trying to set up Internet Sharing so that I can connect my old MacBook Pro running 10.6.8 via ethernet to another device - I'm trying with xbox360 and Sony Blu Ray (BPD-S185) (for diversity of devices - I used to have it working on my xbox, but really want it working with the blu ray player but the network status feedback is better for problem solving on the xbox!).
I have my MBP connected to my home network over Airport which has the following details:
    - IP: 192.168.1.5
    - Router IP: 192.168.1.1
I have then enabled Internet Sharing through System Preferences to share my Airport connection to my Ethernet connection.
I have the following Ethernet settings:
    - Configure IPv4: Using DHCP with manual address
    - (Ethernet) IP address: 192.168.2.1
    - Subnet Mask: (blank - not user accessable, changes to 255.255.255.0 when xbox turned on)
    - Router: (blank - not user accessable)
    - DNS Server: 192.168.1.1
    - Search Domains: (left blank)
On the xbox I've set the network settings to:
    - IP: 192.168.2.2
    - Subnet: 255.255.255.0
    - Gateway: 192.168.2.1
    - Primary DNS: 192.168.1.1
    - Secondary DNS: 192.168.2.1
When I then select 'Test my Xbox Live Connection'  it takes a while, the Network status shows 'Connected', however The Internet Failed.  I am informed that the 'Test Failed' and 'more information' tells me I have an 'Internet Error' with the following Status codes:
    W: 0000-000B
    X: 0000-000D
    Y: 0000-0000
    Z: 0000-0000
    ID0004-000
    L: 0015-10F1
    Q: 8007-0435
    T: Wired
    A: 192.168.2.2/255.255.255.0
    G: 192.168.2.1
    D: 192.168.1.1/192.168.2.1
So, it looks as though the problem lies with the MBP and internet sharing on OSX.  I have extra suspicions that this is the problem, as connecting my Blu Ray player to my MBP via ethernet I also get a successful connection to the network, but no internet access.
Pleeeeease can someone help?!?!  This is driving me nuts - a couple of years ago I had internet sharing working to let my xbox connect to the internet, so what's happened in the last few years to mean this won't work?

If you want to back it up there, use the Disk Utility to create a disk image of it.
If you want to import its contents to iMovie, iTunes, or elsewhere, use MPEG Streamclip and Apple's MPEG-2 playback component to convert the VOB files on it to a different format.

  • Hard drive on HP notebook PC failed. After replacement, can I upgrade OS and memory?

I have an HP Pavilion Entertainment Notebook PC, Model dv9617nr (HP pn GS730UA).  An error message on boot-up says "Operating System not found" so my Windows Vista Ultimate 32-bit (upgraded two years ago) will not load. I am assuming this means that my hard drive has failed. How can I verify this assumption? Again, assume I am correct, and I order the recommended replacement (HP pn 590736-001) from SpareParts Warehouse ($142.50 plus shipping). Are there instructions on the internet for doing this replacement? After I do this replacement, I thought I could install Windows 7 I already have and upgrade the memory to 4GB SODIMM from the 1GB SODIMM that was originally used. What problems would I have with Hardware Compatibility using Windows 7? If the memory module I use has the same specs as the HP recommended replacement (HP pn 598861-001), i.e. 800MHz, 200 pin, PC2-6400, SDRAM, but a larger 4GB memory capacity, would I have any compatibility problems using it? Please advise me on these issues. Thanks, Jeff
    This question was solved.
    View Solution.

    Hi, Jeff:
Let me break down your question...
First, to confirm your HDD died, go into your BIOS menu. There should be a hard drive and memory diagnostics utility.  Run the HDD diagnostics utility and see what it reports. More than likely the HDD has crashed and is no longer usable.
You can order a replacement drive or you can get any SATA II hard drive --either 5400 RPM or 7200 RPM.
You could go to 250 to 500 GB if you choose. Unfortunately right now, HDD prices are unreasonably high due to the flooding in Thailand where many HDD manufacturing plants are located. Some were damaged heavily, causing HDD prices to triple almost overnight.
This is a drive you can get that I think is better than what you have now: This one is 7,200 RPM. Faster but uses more battery power.
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822136279
You can get the 5400 rpm version too...similar. Not as good as the caviar black. This is more along the line of what you would get from HP.
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822136387
Read the reviews on both or you are free to get the one from HP.
There are instructions to install the hard drive and memory on your notebook's support and driver page. Click on Manuals on the right side of the page.
    http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c01278446&tmp_task=prodinfoCategory&cc=us&dlc=en...
Then you want to look at the maintenance and service guide.
You can upgrade the memory to a maximum of 4 GB using 2 x 2GB of PC2-6400 memory. You can get it from HP or you can get it at the link below. This is the memory I use. As a matter of fact I just ordered this very same memory to install in my sister-in-law's dv6700.
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820148159
Now, you can install W7 just fine. I installed W7 Home Premium 64 bit on my dv6810us that has pretty much the same hardware as yours and 4 GB of memory (the same as I posted above).
Here is the catch though. It depends on what version of W7 you have. If you have a W7 upgrade version, you must install a qualifying operating system on the hard drive before you can upgrade it.
If you have a full version of Windows 7, then you can install it on a blank hard drive.
If you have the upgrade version, contact HP support and order a set of Vista recovery disks. Install Vista and then uprade to W7 if you have the upgrade version of W7.
You can use the vista drivers from your notebook's support page for any drivers you need that W7 didn't supply.
One thing...DO NOT flash (update) the BIOS when running Windows 7. You can only flash it using windows vista.
Hope this helps. If you have any other questions, please let us know.

  • Resource estimation/Sizing (i.e CPU and Memory) for Oracle database servers

    Hi,
I have came across one of the requirement of Oracle database server sizing in terms of CPU and Memory requirement. Has anybody metalink notes or white paper to have basic estimation or calculation for resources (i.e CPU and RAM) on based of database size, number of concurrent connections/sessions and/or number of transactions.
I have searched lot on metalink but failed to have such, will be great help if anybody has idea on this. I'm damn sure it has to be, because to start with implementation of IT infrastructure one has to do estimation of resources aligned with IT budget.
    Thanks in advance.
    Mehul.

You could start the other way around, if you already have a server is it sufficient for the database you want to run on it? Is there sufficient memory? Is it solely a database server (not shared)? How fast are the disks - SAN/RAID/local disk? Does it have the networking capacity (100mbps, gigabit)? How many CPUs, will there be intensive SQL? How does Oracle licensing fit into it? What type of application that will run on the database - OLTP or OLAP?
If you don't know if there is sufficient memory/CPU then profile the application based on what everyone expects, again, start with OLTP or OLAP and work your way down to the types of queries/jobs that will be run, number of concurrent users and what performance you expect/require. For an OLAP application you may want the fastest disks possible, multiple CPUs and a large SGA and PGA (2-4GB PGA?), pay a little extra for parallel server and partitioning in license fees.
This is just the start of an investigation, then you can work out what fits into your budget.
