[SOLVED] Format USB flash stick to UDF

Hi all.
I've got new 8GB USB flash stick and decided to format it to UDF. Don't ask why and don't say me, that fat32/ntfs/extX/whatever is better
I actually don't need USB stick at all. So formatting it to UDF is just a matter of interest.
I've installed udftools.
Then I've tried to make fs as a regular user
$ mkudffs --media-type=hd --blocksize=512 /dev/sdc
trying to change type of multiple extents
$
After that I've tried the same as root
# mkudffs --media-type=hd --blocksize=512 /dev/sdc
start=0, blocks=64, type=RESERVED
start=64, blocks=12, type=VRS
start=76, blocks=180, type=USPACE
start=256, blocks=1, type=ANCHOR
start=257, blocks=16, type=PVDS
start=273, blocks=1, type=LVID
start=274, blocks=15826413, type=PSPACE
start=15826687, blocks=1, type=ANCHOR
start=15826688, blocks=239, type=USPACE
start=15826927, blocks=16, type=RVDS
start=15826943, blocks=1, type=ANCHOR
So, I failed to create new fs.
Could someone help to create one?
Great thanks in advance

  • Why does the Yosemite Finder become unresponsive when moving a file within my USB Flash stick?

    Why does the Yosemite Finder become unresponsive when moving a file within my USB Flash stick? I have to Relaunch the Finder to get it working again.
    Background / other symptoms:
    The Flash drive in question has been formatted HFS.
    I get no error messages, including on the Console, and no sound indicators.
    I can copy files, using the Finder, from a hard-drive to the usb flash drive with no problem.
    Finder copying on this stick works just fine on my other Mac.
    I can move files within another (FAT32-formatted) USB flash drive.
    The quirky USB HFS Flash drive works fine on my other Mac.
    Outside of the Finder, I can use mv just fine to move the files on the HFS flash drive.
    If the HFS-formatted Flash drive were faulty, I would at least expect some sort of error in the Console app, but perhaps not from the Finder.

  • "Burning" a .ISO onto a USB Flash stick?

    Does anybody know what app to use in order to create a disk image onto a USB flash memory from a .ISO file?
    In other words, instead of burning the .iso onto a CD or DVD, how to do the same onto a USB flash stick?
    Boot Camp used to include such functionality but in the latest versions seems to be gone.

    Hi! The error indicates that the stick is either bad or the usb port is not reading it correctly. I'd try re-formatting it in a PC and if successful then format it on the Mac if you are trying to format it as the Mac format. The MSDOS (fat32) format on the pc can be read and written to on the Mac but you are limited with large file size transfers. Tom

  • How to format USB flash drive?

    I recently received a USB flash drive at a traveling covention. It has two partitions and one is unwritable and is filled with travel brochurs etc etc. I was wondering if it was possible to reformat the whole thing back into 1 partition. I already tried disk utility. Thanks!

    Drive Preparation
    1. Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
    4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
    5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Security button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
    6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.

  • DIsk Utility Hangs When Formatting USB flash drive

    I have a 4gb USB drive (Jetflash by Transcend) that's been usable formatted as FAT. I'd read that i/o would be a lot faster if I formatted as Mac OS Extended instead. In fact, I've done this with previous USB drives with success. When I try to reformat the drive in Disk Utility, it stalls at "Preparing to Erase." I've also tried going through Partition instead, but again, just stalls at the beginning. This is not a freeze or hang or spinning ball moment, but it will just sit there not doing anything. I can quit out of DU at any time. I've left DU alone, thinking this just may take a while, but it has stayed this way up to 3 hours. Suspiciously, there are no blinking lights on the usb drive during this process. I realize every USB flash drive must have different firmware that reacts differently to Macs and I may just be unable to Mac-format this. I've also taken the drive to other Macs all running 10.4.7 with the same results. Any ideas or workarounds will be appreciated. Thanks.

    Update: I've tried on a 3rd mac, my g5/1.8 at home and plugged the USB flash drive to a powered usb hub. Now Disk Utility doesn't stall, but instead immediately states that it can't access the partition map. As the drive has public/private partition capability and also security features, I'm going to assume that's the reason for it to be only formattable as FAT. So now I'm looking for large capacity flash drives that are mac-formattable or find information that throughput is the same on a USB drive no matter how it's formatted.

  • Using ipad, can I play back videos stored on a USB flash stick?

    No, you can't. There are a couple of hard drives out there that will allow you to stream to your iPad over WiFi. Otherwise, you'll need, as the previous poster explained, sync through iTunes.

  • Has to do with a USB Flash Stick

    I bought a Kingston DataTraveler 100 (1GB) and I want to put photos on the stick to use in a Digital Photo Frame I was given for Christmas.
    I was able to put 112 photos on the stick but then it told me it was full when there was still almost 800mb left. The stick worked fine in the frame.
    What I want is to be able to use the full 1GB (or close to it) and I figured I needed to erase the drive (stick) and reformat (which I did and the stick allowed me to use the full 1GB (haven't filled it yet but already I put on 350 photos which is more than before). The problem is the stick isn't being read by the photo frame now.
    Can anyone help me please????

    Actually, I got it working again. I reformatted the flash drive yet again after erasing and then I did a copy and paste of all my photos, ejected the drive and tried it in the frame and walla, it works perfect and no problems with an error message of full (when it isn't).
    I'm still open for anyone with information that would help me understand this issue.

    I'm improved the messaging from my udsks script, so you'll know now why an unmount fails.
    Also, I've dropped notify-send in favour of zenity, though you can easily change it to use another notification program like dzen2 (which I prefer). This last change came about to avoid the problems caused by the implementation of Gnome3 and GTK3.

  • Error code -36 with FAT 32 USB Flash Drive

    When copying files from my hard drive to a FAT32 formatted USB flash drive I keep getting error code -36 errors. I reformatted the flash drive to Mac OS Extended and the files copied fine. I formatted it back to FAT32 and the error returned. I need to use this drive with PC computers at school and can't leave it in the Mac format. Anyone know of a solution to this problem. It didn't do it with my G4 powermac and OS 10.4 but does with the mac mini with 10.6.

    This is a problem I've been dealing with since getting a new Macbook for christmas. In my case I use a Macbook with 10.6.2 at home, networked to a winxp computer, also use FAT formatted USB sticks for backups and taking files to work....and at work I use a mix of winxp machines and older macs running 10.3 and 10.4. I move files around between them all the time, and have had this annoying error -36 file copying problem with the 10.6.2 macbook since day 1.
    I did read about the dot_clean solution, and it does seem to work....sometimes. But the problem ISN'T just when copying a folder full of files. I also have the situation where I work on files in InDesign, and then export a PDF directly to the desktop. I then try to copy that ONE pdf file from the desktop to a FAT USB stick OR to an internet-accessed Appleshare volume, and I will get the dreaded error -36. MOST of the time when I get the error on a single file like this, it did actually copy and is useable on the USB stick / Appleshare volume and I can ignore the error. But sometimes not. Either way, it does show that the problem isn't just with folders of files, or even with the situation of copying a file from mac to windows to mac and then getting the error the next time you try to copy it to a win formatted volume.....you CAN get the error with an individual, just-created file in 10.6.2.
    I sure wish Apple would fix this already!

  • USB flash booting

    I am not sure if this is the best forum for this - please let me know if there is a better Apple forum.
    I have a 733 MHz G4 with Leopard and Tiger volumes. I formatted an 8 GB USB flash stick with: Apple partition map, Mac OS Extended (Journaled) and OS 9 drivers and then used Carbon Copy Cloner to clone the volume with OS 10.4.11 and OS 9.2.2 onto the USB stick.
    Both of the USB stick OSs (10.4.11 and the 9.2.2) are bootable but they are not as easy to select as they were on the original volume.
    All bootable OSs can be satisfactorily selected from OS 9.
    Startup Manager (option key at boot) allows any volume to be selected but it will not change the selected OS on any multiple OS volume - I assume this is a normal limitation.
    Both of the original OSs (10.4.11 and 9.2.2) can be individually selected from all OS X Startup Disk preference windows.
    OS X Startup Disk preference windows allow USB selection but not a change of the USB OS - why is this?
    From my post to http://forums.bombich.com/viewtopic.php?p=62752#62752 I understand that Bombich Software are reluctant to support PPC booting from USB flash devices on the basis that Apple say it is not possible!

    I have extracted the following from John Sawyer's 22 April 2008 posts on:
    http://reviews.cnet.com/8301-13727_7-10329518-263.html
    "I've been able to get most PPC Mac models - - to boot from USB - - without modifying Open Firmware - -
    The first Macs to boot from USB were the slot-loading iMac G3s, the AGP/Sawtooth G4s, and the Powerbook G3 Firewire. And, the first version of OS X that could boot via USB, was 10.4.3.
    I've noticed over the years that many people claim all kinds of USB booting limitations, only a few of which I've encountered."
    In view of John's remarks, and the experience of many others, I would be grateful if those propagating disinformation could reflect upon their actions.

  • IMac USB flash drive problem

    My imac (os 10.6.8 2.5GHz i5) will not recognize my USB flash drive when I plug it into any port. Disk utility will not see it either. What do I do? I plug it into a friend's macbook  and it is readable and writable there with NO PROBLEM... what's up with

    Troubleshooting steps :
    - Turn iMac off (Leave Off)
    - Unplug Power Cord from Power Outlet or Back of iMac (Leave Unplugged)
    - Hold Power Button on Back of iMac for 10 Seconds (While Unplugged)
    - Let Go and Plug back in
    - Turn computer on and see if USB Stick now reads
    - If it doesnt read plug in other USB Port and restart iMac
    - Open Finder and see if its listed under devices as unknown or other name
    - If still unreadable (Try plugging in other USB Device)
    - If other USB Device reads fine then its something with USb Stick only
    Plan B:
    - Plug USB Stick onto other Macbook
    - Go to Disk Utility/Format USB Memory Stick as
    - Safely Remove and Plug into iMac (See If It Reads)
    - If still no read then your USB may not be readable with your Operating System or may be unreadable to the firmware specifically of that Operating system
    - Compare with other Macbook and see which Operating System version the other Macbook may be under ie. (Version 10.6.8 or 10.5.8) etc if its different then u may have to return item and try other brand
    - Try all the above and let me know
