[Solved] Fresh install; HAL won't start?

So I just finished a fresh installation and now I can't start X because HAL won't start up at all.
I haven't messed around with anything except for installing everything and fixing up my config files.
Seems like HAL is crashing because of permissions but I even checked the paths and they seem to be fine:

Can't find anything worthwhile in logs etc., and I can't think of anything that could be causing this?
I checked that the HAL user exists and has been added to the default groups, but that "???"-part is alarming.
DBus starts up normally.
Networking and "lo" seem to be working fine as well, and I don't have iptables up.

Ah, haven't been up to date on all the changes, it seems...
In the past I've had problems with the nvidia driver + Xorg without HAL, I think?
Anyhow, contrary to the Xorg page, I had no 20-nvidia.conf. I created that and now I'm able to startx without HAL but KDM doesn't work, the screen flickers when it attempts to start Xorg but then it crashes. Strange. Nothing in the Xorg logs either.
I'll have to see about that next, but it's nice to be able to get rid of HAL at least.

I am having the same issue. I noticed it about a week ago. I hadn't updated in a bit, so I did. Same problem. When I reboot, it works the first time, but it won't work again after that.

  • HAL won't start after install on DL585 G2

I ran a v40z for years and recently had SRSS 5.2 on S11 running just fine. This past week I replaced the v40z with a DL585 G2 and reinstalled S11 and SRSS 5.2. Everything went well except now HAL won't start failing with, I suspect, a timeout after several minutes. Using truss it is clear that devfsadm is going too slow. If I keep restarting HAL and devfsadm over and over, eventually it will start.
Is there any way to troubleshoot this further?
    Many thanks,
    Marty

    Thanks for the reply.
I am now kicking myself because I thought I had made a copy of the truss output, but I have not. After 2 hours of tinkering, the machine is finally up and I am hesitant to mess with it any more.
The truss of devfsadm showed threads of devfsadmd stalling for about 60 seconds over and over again performing an ioctl against a devinfo file. I also wonder if this is related to the following message seen over and over in /var/adm/messages:
    Mar 4 10:05:21 dl585 devfsadmd[595]: [ID 511948 daemon.error] di_init failed for /pci@0,0/pci10de,5c@9/pci103c,3305@4,4/device@1/mouse: No such device or address
There is some mouse that devfsadm thinks it has but then it can't find it. For what it's worth, there is no mouse plugged into the console. Further, I have disabled ILO via boot ROM and disabled all USB via BIOS.
    Suggestions?
    Thanks again,
    Marty

  • HAL won't start...no X, only terminal

Hey, everything was going on quite well for a few months...now HAL won't start. At all. Obviously, any WM doesn't start either.
When I try to start HAL I get this:
Failed to start message bus: Error in file /etc/dbus-1/system.d/ConsoleKit.conf, line 1, column 0: no element found
    and

Things I've tried: adding/removing dbus from daemons array, fscking the disk (who knows)...restarting hal and dbus 1,000 times.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks,
EDIT: I notice that I upgraded dbus-python to 0.83.1-1 this afternoon...the problem started following a reboot...hmmm...ALSO, I should note that I am using 86-64, if that means anything.

Hal wasn't (I don't know if it is now) starting here too. I guess I just have two simultaneous troubles, one of which seems to be the same you guys are having.
Do your xinit error messages give a line like this: "FATAL: Could not load /lib/modules/2.6.32-ARCH/modules.dep: No such file or directory" ?
It was being the trouble for me, and I've googled a bit about, and this results at least in X not working for some other people, I don't know if it's due to hal not starting or whatever (it was happening to me too).
It seems that how to fix it may be a bit different for everyone. It apparently results from upgrading the kernel and not booting right away, but I might have misunderstood something. For some people the solution was simply too boot (!), but for others it involved commands such as "depmod -a". In my case, I've reinstalled the kernel (some people downgraded it), and it worked, at least X worked. I didn't test network yet, and I didn't pay attention to see if hal started. Despite of X starting, I was having my own troubles with its configuration, so I didn't have mouse or keyboard. I'm typing from debian, I'm going too take a look at arch's xorg.conf and then reboot once again, if there's something that looks more or less evidently wrong (like it not being there).
So, that's it. I suggest you to see if that "modules.dep" thing appears in your xinit error messages, and google a bit for it if that's the case.
EDIT: Yep, it did fix everything for me. Hal starts, X starts, and now that I've restored xorg.conf, I can use the keyboard and I also have internet connection on arch.
EDIT 2: additional note. The error message I've mentioned does not appear in the xorg.0.log on /var somewhere (I couldn't find/grep it at least), but only as the output of xinit (probably startx as well).

  • [SOLVED] Fresh Install, won't boot past grub

I did a fresh install of Arch (GPT partitioning table) with a 8 GB root directory, 138 GB home directory, 4 GB swap, and a 1007 KB bios boot partition. Everything went well, I got through the installation with no problems, but when I rebooted the computer. It showed this after the grub menu: https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-UM-3 … 2014-06-22
So now my question is, was I supposed to do anything extra during the installation process? Or is this a hardware problem? Linux Mint, Ubuntu, Lubuntu, and Zorin OS works fine so I'm assuming I need to do something extra during installation...

You can do it one of two ways: boot the install cd/usb, mount all the partitions as in the original installation process, then chroot.  From there you can just use pacman to install packages as it it were a normal system: `pacman -S linux-lts`.
There is, however, no need for the chroot.  The alternative, and somewhat simpler, approach would be to boot the install media and mount the partitions as above, then use the pacstrap tool just like you did when installing the 'base' group: `pacstrap -i /mnt linux-lts`.
I think it is safer to arch-chroot because you still need to be chrooted to generate your grub.cfg "grub-mkconfig -o /boot/grub/grub.cfg"

  • [solved]Yet Another "X won't start" thread

I get the black screen when i try to startx. i followed the wiki entry to set up X, but it doesn't work. Now, what i want to know is, how do i go back on a fresh install to an older version of X, that *doesn't* use HAL?
Last edited by GypsyJoker (2009-11-28 01:05:05)

It happened to me too. I use LXDE and everything was fine until last X.org update (prior to today's) when the blank screen started happening after every restart. I discovered that if I edit /etc/xdg/lxsessions/LXDE/autostart file as root and close it, even without changing anything, not resaving the file, not doing anything to it, then I was able to enter to X with startx as always. Weird, isn't it?
Afortunately, today I've updated my x.org server and seems everything is fine again.

  • [SOLVED] PulseAudio Volume Control won't start anymore

    Hi!
As described in the title, PulseAudio Volume Control won't start from one day to another.
I have no clue where this could come from or what I could have done wrong to create this issue.
Here is how it looks like:
When I start it, it seems to be loading but after some time it just disappears and nothing happens.
I also have the same looking issue with KMix and Google Music Manager.
Do any of you have an idea where this could be coming from?
    Thanks for your help :-)

Rasi wrote:StefanMu, you are not giving enough details. Have there been any updates, that are pulse or gtk related. What versions do you have installed of gtk, gtkmm, libpulse, pavucontrol. Are all of those repository packages, or is something built from AUR? Any custom repositories?
Hi, and thanks for your reply. Here are the details:
    gtk:
    [root@ACDCROCKS-ARCH_LINUX miniclip22]# pacman -Qi gtk
    Name : gtk
    Version : 1.2.10-13
    Description : GTK+ is a multi-platform toolkit (v1)
    gtkmm:
    [root@ACDCROCKS-ARCH_LINUX miniclip22]# pacman -Qi gtkmm
    Name : gtkmm
    Version : 2.24.4-1
    Description : C++ bindings for gtk2
    Architecture : x86_64
    URL : [url]http://www.gtkmm.org/[/url]
    libpulse:
    [root@ACDCROCKS-ARCH_LINUX miniclip22]# pacman -Qi libpulse
    Name : libpulse
    Version : 4.0-6
Description : A featureful, general-purpose sound server (client library)
    Architecture : x86_64
    pavucontrol:
    [root@ACDCROCKS-ARCH_LINUX miniclip22]# pacman -Qi pavucontrol
    Name : pavucontrol
    Version : 2.0-2
Description : A GTK volume control for PulseAudio
    Architecture : x86_64
They are all repository packages, NOT from the AUR. As previously mentioned, this is a fresh install, so I don't have any custom repositories. Any help is appreciated. Thanks in advance!

  • Win7 install dvd won't start on mac mini

I'm trying to install windows 7 on my mid 2007 mac mini (running snow leopard) in a bootcamp partition. I created the bootcamp partition (32GB) using bootcamp assistant (no problem there) and inserted the installation dvd, but once the mini reboots to start the installer I just get a black screen (symptoms very similar to those with the late 2006 iMac).
I tried using both the 64 and 32bit version but no difference there.
The win7 install DVD (bought, not downloaded) seems ok as installation as a virtual machine using vmware works.
I'ld really much prefer running windows in a bootcamp partition than through virtualization, so any help would be much appreciated.
    Thanks in advance.

If it won't start past the screen with the Apple logo in the center, there's something very badly wrong with your system. Try starting in safe mode (hold down the shift key at startup, starting when you hear the startup chime and letting go when you see the Apple logo). If it starts up fine then (keeping in mind it will take longer than normal to start up in this mode, so be patient), but the problem returns when you reboot normally, you have some incompatible third-party software installed. What that might be is hard to say.
If safe mode doesn't work either, your system is probably badly corrupt. Try reinstalling. Hold down command-R at startup to enter recovery mode. Once you do that, go to Disk Utility and repair the hard drive. If problems are nonexistent or fixed, quit Disk Utility and then reinstall the system. (This will simply replace the existing system files, and should leave all your other stuff alone.) If problems cannot be fixed, report back for more instructions.

  • Flash Builder 4 Installed, But Won't Start

I installed Flash Builder 4. The installation completed without a hitch, but the application won't start. Here are the log files from \Local Settings\Temp and Adobe Flash Builder 4\.metadata.
    amt3.log - http://pastebin.com/snrXFkfD
    \metadata\.log - http://pastebin.com/BkmVBBU5
Any idea regarding what I am doing wrong? I have Eclipse on my comp, but I have installed the standalone version of FB 4 trial.

    > Even if the trial has expired shouldn't the screen with buy now appear?
Yes, that's what I would expect too. Sometimes there are situations where previously installed Prerelease versions (beta versions from Adobe Labs) can interfere with that though, especially with multiple users on a given machine in a Lab setting.
    > I can requisition a full license from the sysadmin.
Good idea - that's probably your best shot at getting FB4 activated on that machine, without needing to re-image it. After you obtain an FB4 serial number, you should be able to enter it at install-time to activate the license.

  • Fresh CS4 Encore - won't start

    Hi,
I have just installed Windows 7 and a fresh install of Master Collection CS4.  Everything is working except Encore.  It starts with the splash screen, but then quickly disappears - gone as if it ended normally - Nothing in the event viewer, no dump, nada.  I've seen multiple threads on this subject, but no solutions.   Can anyone help me with this?
    Thanks,
    Chris

Everyone is saying there is an issue with Win7, and I have the exact
same problem on two machines, one running XP/32 and the other running Win7/64. In both cases Encore CS4 freezes. Everything else works fine except Encore. Whether I start from shortcut or thru dynamic link I get the same freeze.
    Any input would be great

  • Just installed PE10, won't start up...

    Hello
I just bought photoshop and premiere elements 10. I installed both of them (Disc 2) and restarted the computer just like it said. I opened photoshop and that works fine. However, when I opened up premiere and went to the menu screen, I clicked "new project" and it doesn't even come on at all. I uninstalled and reinstalled it hoping that would work, unfortunately it still isn't coming on. I even made a shortcut to just start up a new project but that doesn't work. It keeps disappearing after it says, "Loading importer quicktime.exe", I downloaded the latest Quicktime update but still no luck. Hopefully someone can help me with this.
My laptop is a Toshiba C660.
    Windows 7 64-bit operated.
    Intel core i3
    4 gb RAM
Around 93gb left on my hdd.
    Thanks

There have been a several similar posts from Toshiba owners recently. In all (I think) cases the problem was solved by installing the latest generic driver from the display driver manufacturer. However to allow this you must first remove the driver from Device Manager. If you don't you will just get an error message saying to go to Toshiba's own site. The exact text of this solution (provided BY TOSHIBA) is:
    Dear Mr Bray
    Toshiba Reference Number:
Thank you for your recent enquiry.
Please try uninstalling the present display driver and updating it with the latest driver from Intel, to uninstall the present driver please boot the Notebook to the Windows desktop screen, open the Start Menu and type Device in to the search line, select Device Manager from the list above where you typed. In the Device Manager click the arrow to the left of the line saying Display adapter, then right click the Intel display adapters name and select Uninstall. When prompted whether you want to continue the uninstall, make sure that you put a Tic in the box where it says Do you want to delete the software for this device.
Once the driver is uninstalled restart the notebook and download the driver,
    http://downloadcenter.intel.com/confirm.aspx?httpDown=http://downloadmirror.intel.com/2067 6/a08/Win7Vista_64_152252.exe&lang=eng&Dwnldid=206 76&keyword=%22HM55%22
Install the driver and then test the Adobe software, if you are still having issues please contact Adobe support at http://www.adobe.com/support/photoshopelements/  .
    Hope that works for you.
    Cheers,

  • [SOLVED] Fresh Install - LXDE - Missing Window Decorations

    Hi folks,
I just did a fresh install on my netbook (Asus 1000h) which went flawless as allways. I did install Xorg, the relevant intel drivers, some small stuff like screen and the like and then went on to install LXDE as the desktop environment + the murrine gtk engine and some murrine themes. Everything is working, the murrine theme etc, except one thing: The window decorations are missing completely.
This is the first time sth. like that happened to me after a fresh install and I'm not really sure what could be missing and 3 hours after trying to delete my ~/.config ~./local folders (I'm using a backup of my ~ - I've checked permissions etc.) I'm ranning out of ideas. I'd be glad for any pointers as to how to debug this or what could possibly cause this.
    Thanks in advance.

LXDE does not provide a window manager (and window decorator). They just strongly advise to use OpenBox. On ArchLinux, the group of packages "lxde" doesn't install OpenBox, so you have to install it by yourself, or install another WM. Then, you will need to configure the way you launch X so OpenBox is used.
You may refer to http://lxde.org/lxde .

  • [SOLVED] Fresh install read only file system

I just did a fresh install of Arch this morning, and I have been trying to fix it most of the day. I was following the Beginner's Guide in the wiki as close as I could. (There were a couple items that didn't quite match up.) I only edited the files that it told me to, and then just minor edits. I checked out /etc/fstab during the process and noticed that none of my hard drives were present. I didn't think this was normal, so I opened another terminal and grabbed the UUIDs with ls -l /dev/disk/by-uuid/. I have two hard drives, but only sda1 (/) and sda2 (swap) showed up. (sdb1 is the entire second hard drive as /home.) Here is the default fstab:
    # /etc/fstab: static file system information
    # <file system> <dir> <type> <options> <dump> <pass>
    none /dev/pts devpts defaults 0 0
    none /dev/shm tmpfs defaults 0 0
    /dev/cdrom /media/cd auto ro,user,noauto,unhide 0 0
    /dev/dvd /media/dvd auto ro,user,noauto,unhide 0 0
    /dev/fd0 /media/fl auto user,noauto 0 0
The example documentation indicated that the file should have lines similair to...
    /dev/disk/by-uuid/6334340b-87f1-406e-a777-13210ba85887 / ext3 defaults,noatime,nodirtime 0 1
    /dev/disk/by-uuid/5ffd6a40-6d72-4710-82af-ae894e557f89 swap swap defaults 0 0
    /dev/disk/by-uuid/32935c6c-6b75-4039-6b69-21f8b805e8f8 /home ext3 defaults,noatime,nodirtime 0 2
...but then I found an example while searching around that showed the lines like this:
    UUID=6334340b-87f1-406e-a777-13210ba85887 / ext3 defaults,noatime,nodirtime 0 1
    UUID=5ffd6a40-6d72-4710-82af-ae894e557f89 swap swap defaults 0 0
    UUID=32935c6c-6b75-4039-6b69-21f8b805e8f8 /home ext3 defaults,noatime,nodirtime 0 2
In the first scenario, everything boots like normal, but when I tried to do anything that required writing to disk, the operation failed with a message about the file system being read-only. (I was trying to edit some config files because I couldn't get online.) Mind you, I was working as root the whole time, because I hadn't even gotten to adding a user yet. The only way I could make changes was to boot a live cd, mount, edit, reboot. remember to remove the live cd, reboot again, repeat.
In the second version of fstab, the bootup process kept trying to check the disk for errors. When it was done it wanted to reboot. Then it tried to check again (presumably because it couldn't save the fact that it had already checked).
I am at a loss. I really wish to use Arch Linux. I've been baby-fed for quite a while on Ubuntu, but it always ran slow. Please somebody help me! I am happy to provide more information; just let me know what you need.

Thank you so much for pointing out that typo! Turns out that is what was wrong. Well plus two of uuids had one typo each....
Also from what I can tell it doesn't matter which format I use for the uuids in fstab. I will use the UUID=xxxxx... version unless somebody can tell me why I shouldn't.

Could also be a database connection issue.
    What database are you running?
We've had an issue where the database (MSSQL) was hosted on a seperate server and where Windows Authentication was used. To resolve the issue, we had to change the Server Intelligence Agent (SIA) service to start with the Windows/domain account.
