(SOLVED) Hal and dbus, do I need dbus?

I read the wiki and it says if I don't use hal in my daemons then I need to add dbus.
I haven't been using hal, and I haven't added dbus either. My system seems to be working right, but I guess something could be wrong. Reading the wiki brings me here to ask if I need dbus and why?
My daemons,
DAEMONS=(@syslog-ng @network !netfs @alsa @mpd @crond)

sudo pacman -R dbus
checking dependencies...
error: failed to prepare transaction (could not satisfy dependencies)
:: avahi: requires dbus>=1.1.20-1
:: awesome: requires dbus
:: gconf: requires dbus
:: qt: requires dbus
I assume I should add it to daemons?

  • [SOLVED]hal and network not running on boot

    My hal and network are not running on boot.  I have to manually start them once I login.  I have put them as Daemons in rc.conf and it still does not seem to help.
    Thanks!

    I figured out what was wrong, the D in Daemons for the rc.conf file was a lowercase d for whatever reason.  But now I have a bigger problem, I seem to have lost the files for my sound card.  I used to have the soundcard listed in alsamixer.  Now it is not there.  when I do a
    $ cat /proc/asound/cards
    it is not listed, although it used to.  however I can still
    modprobe snd-emu10k1
    It is the Creative Labs SB Live! EMU10k1  I have tried to reinstall alsa.  I reinstalled alsa-utils and alsa-oss, but I am not sure how to uninstall alsa-lib because of dependencies.  PLEASE HELP.

  • [Solved][Hal and Partitions] Newbie problem with hal policy

    Hello everybody,
    As a new user of archlinux for less than a week I have experienced a great distribution after having been for 1 year on Linux.
    After installation I was able to solve most of my problems with the wiki and the forums but there is one problem I cannot resolve.
    I have installed Kde 4.2 on my computer and I can mount Usb drives, or CDs with hal (It is in the daemons section of my rc.conf) but strangely I cannot access my other partitions such as my Ubuntu partition (ext3), or the family's Windows partition (Nfts). I have installed nfts-3g for the nfts partition hal refuses to let me access it, I will give you what Dolphin says when I try to access the Nfts:
    org.freedesktop.Hal.Device.PermissionDeniedByPolicy: hal-storage-mount-fixed-extra-options no <-- (actions,result)
    And for the ext3
    org.freedesktop.Hal.Device.PermissionDeniedByPolicy: hal-storage-mount-fixedauth_admin_keep_always <-- (actions,result)
    I don't really understand what It means but normally I am allowed to mount partitions.
    My /etc/PolycyKit/PolicyKit.conf: http://pastebin.com/m57e94025
    And my /etc/dbus-1/system.d/hal.conf: http://pastebin.com/m62861179
    I've already tried to configure these two with the wiki and the forums but nothing yet.
    If you need more information ask me.
    Thanks in advance.

    You might want to reread the Hal wiki re: Permission Denied with automounter.  Your /etc/PolicyKit/PolicyKit.conf seems to be missing the lines mentioned in the wiki.

  • (SOLVED) hal and automounting

    Hallo. I am e newbie of Arch. Two months ago I installed Arch on pc without problem and with a very few customisation. I tryed to do the same with my laptop. Installation with the last set was found on web was ok, but now ... I am unable to see hotplugged usb pen drives, external usb disk, internal partition. I can mount them manually by fstab edit or just console, but I see them as folder  :-(
    What seems strange to me is that on Arch pc all is right, and I can see the drives in dolphin even if not mounted.

    Really sorry ... The laptop is HP Pav dv2000 series, the PC is HP too. The desktop environment for both is KDE4 from extra repo. I made just a bit of manually setting ... rc.conf and lcd-font. It' s a really clean standard installation following the cd menu.
    OK. SOLVED !!!
    Removed and reinstalled udev. Strange that pacman -Suy didn't see the new version ...

  • [SOLVED]HAL and multiple mount attempts

    Recently I managed to break my HD and so had to reinstall everything. Everything is working about the way they used to BUT:
    Everytime I put CD or DVD into my DVD-drive or try to use USB-stick HAL for some reason tries to mount the media 3 times. Discs give two error messages for mount point being allready in use but otherwise work fine, USB-sticks doesn't give any errors but open three filemanager windows. Problem is mainly cosmetic because everything works, it's just annoying...
    Anybody have a clue what I might have done wrong?
    Last edited by FrozenSoil (2008-03-28 13:15:03)

    Seems like it wasn't HAL problem after all. I had turned on automounting from XFCE settings and that was causing multiple attempts. I unchecked everything from XFCE automount options and now it's working as it should.

  • Do I need dbus and avahi ?

    I don't use HAL. I mount my DVD  and USB drives manually.  I just play videos and do encoding and write DVDs usign wodim or k3b. Do I need dbus and avahi daemons runnning ?
    HAL was installed automatically as some dependancy for something I don't rememeber. I don't even use GNOME/KDE, I simply use wmii with rxvt-unicode and firefox.

    If you use input hotplugging for xorg-server then you need hal which needs dbus.
    dbus is alo needed by wpa_supplicant & firefox and many other GUI applications like the gimp etc
    i cant seem to find the link dependance on firefox although i could have sworn that it depended on dbus-glib in the past.
    since it isnt explicitly disabled in the config im pretty sure firefox uses it http://repos.archlinux.org/viewvc.cgi/f … iew=markup
    but i cant be sure as i use the official binary supplied by mozilla, not the archlinux package.

    If you think it's a common problem how about filing a bug report.  Would likely help more people than just posting in the forum.  Just a suggestion.

  • MATE desktop-environment needs dbus

    I have installed archlinux for first time, and now it is up and running. I downloaded xorg and all that is needed, testet it with xclock and it works.
    I want to have mate desktop, so I downloaded accordingly to mate-userguide.
    Now I am in the section where i should start mate.
    In the guide it says: Always make sure dbus is in your DAEMONS array in rc.conf before starting MATE.
    The problem is that /etc/rc.conf is empty and I have no idea what to fill it with?
    startx will not start Mate without it, and i cannot find any answer on the web.
    Help me if you can?

    woomia wrote:Like I said, tell that to wicd which prints out the warning during install that it needs dbus in DAEMONS.
    Sorry, I couldn't figure out what you meant. There's really a bit like this
    ==> You need to restart the dbus service after
    ==> upgrading wicd.
    ==> Disable networkmanager,dhcdbd or other networking
    ==> utility and add 'wicd' to DAEMONS
    ==> in /etc/rc.conf
    ==> 'dbus' HAS to be before 'wicd' in rc.conf in the
    ==> DAEMONS array.
    in my pacman's log. Seems like the maintainer must have overlooked this part of the wicd.install script. Nevertheless, wicd doesn't require dbus to be started via rc.conf; it's enough to enable the service file -- i.e. wicd's one -- and the rest is done automatically, as expected.

    Hi there, harleygirl.
    A look around the internet and my previous knowledge indicates this is not an issue with firefox, but with how the server that the app is run on is incorrectly configured. To test this, please install an old version of firefox. You can download an older version from http://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/all-older.html then try to visit the website again. Please let us know if it turns out that it works with version 3.6

  • [solved] power management without HAL and pm-utils

    hi guys! i got rid of hal and pm-utils, but i'm having some troubles now with the powersaving settings.
    i'm using hibernate-script with uswsusp tools to hibernate etc, and laptop-mode-tools with acpi for the power management, but this looks like it isnt working anymore.
    for example the screen backlight wont shut down anymore when i close the lid, despite the acpi action scripts are all ok.
    far more importantly the cpu fan doen't ever start!! earlier this morning the cpu hit 77°C (while it's normally 40°) but the fan didn't kick in!
    what can i do?
    EDIT:
    wait, maybe it's just the new kernel i've installed this morning! it's some days now that i've uninstalled hal and i think i would have noticed before!
    Last edited by v43 (2011-02-23 11:25:10)

    disabling laptop-mode-tools temporarily solved the problem. i mean the fan is now spinning free ^^
    i'll try reinstalling it or downgrading the kernel later

  • [SOLVED] HPLIP and foomatic really needed for CUPS?

    Hi there,
    Wanting my HP Laserjet 5M printer to get up and running, at first glance it appears that i have to use the HPLIP package to get it to work with CUPS. When trying to install the HPLIP package pacman states that it also needs foomatic-db. Total installed size would be about 87Mb. Is it really necessary to install HPLIP and foomatic to get my Laserjet going under CUPS? I rather would install only the driver I really need, instead of a 'one for all' package. Or is the biggest part of the HPLIP and foomatic package really needed by the system?
    Regards,
    Frank
    Last edited by senaxo (2010-05-20 11:03:14)

    Ok, it appears that I only needed two things:
    1. The appropriate PPD file for the printer
    2. The package 'foomatic-rip' to be installed
    I've downloaded the PPD for my laserjet printer from http://www.openprinting.org/printer/HP/HP-LaserJet_5M and after adding the printer via the CUPS webinterface using that PPD file of the printer (and after installing 'foomatic-rip') the printer seems to work perfectly.
    Quite a difference to installing the whole 'hplip' and 'foomatic-db' packages and all their dependencies.

  • [Solved] DVDs and CDs only work the first time I put them in

    First lets get this straight before it is asked later on down the line. I am a 6 year Linux user and 2 year Arch user. I am currently using xfce4 and thunar as my file manager with thunar-volman installed. This has been a problem for the past year or so. I use my laptop most of the time (also Arch 64 and working like a dream) so I only try fixing it every so often to no avail.
    I can put in a CD or a DVD and play them with VLC. Here's the catch: after I eject the CD/DVD and put in another one I can't play it or find it. The first time I put one in I even get an icon on the desktop. I don't think it's reasonable to have to reboot everytime I want to play another DVD (time wasted by constant rebooting is one of the very long list of reasons I don't use Microshaft products). I'm stumped, I can't be the only one, but my forum searches yield no treasures.
    Last edited by astrozombie (2010-02-03 01:00:15)

    Thanks for trying, however, I posted what I use for a reason. I am using VLC, and I am a minimalist so I don't want a bunch of programs for doing the exact same thing. VLC is the only player for Linux that plays MTS files out of the box, so I'm not interested in switching or adding another.
    Anyways, it's irrelevant because as I said before, thunar mounts it correctly the first time I put in a DVD or CD and displays an icon on the desktop for the disk. Therefore the problem is most likely hal related, since this began about the time we switched to hotplugging, and besides this I love hotplugging so I am also not interested in disabling that (who know what problems I'll introduce for my MAC keyboard and webcam if I do that). Yes I've read the hal and dbus wikis.
    I can even get a USB CD writer to work with xfburn, however it's a relic and I think that's a sorry work around when I have internal drives that, in theory, work just fine. I wonder if it has anything to do with the drives being IDE when I used the SATA install option on the install disk (I did a fresh install last week) since my hard drives are SATA.
