[Solved]How to fix grub after Windows XP install?

I installed Windows XP on top of Arch in a different partition.
It looks something like this:
/dev/sda1 - XP
/dev/sda2 - Arch
/dev/sda3 - Swap
Grub is located on /dev/sda2/ in /boot/grub/
Windows XP obviously overwritten the mbr like it normally does.
I tried loading the arch live install cd, and trying grub-install /dev/sda and /dev/sda1 and /dev/sda2 but it doesn't do anything.
I want to overwrite Windows XP's boot loader with grub and add XP as an option to boot. Can someone please give me noob friendly instructions on how to accomplish this with minimal effort? It's important I don't damage the XP or Arch partitions. Thanks for any help.

I fixed it! Nearly the same instructions as lucke gave but I just used the Arch Live cd. All I did was boot Arch Live cd, it presented me with grub and bunch of options. (I didn't even boot into the cd) just pressed C so it loaded the grub terminal.
Then:
find /boot/grub/stage1
Which outputs:
root (hdX,Y)
(In my case it was hd0,1)
Then:
root (hdX,Y)
[Don't forget there is space after root and (hdX,Y)]
Finally:
setup hd0

  • How to fix Grub after moving arch to new drive [SOLVED]

I moved my Arch install (/ and /home partitions) to a new drive and I was wondering how to fix Grub so that it knows /boot is on the new drive.  What I've done thus far is
create partitions on the new drive and dd my current / and /home partitions to them.  The new partitions are bigger than the current ones, so I also re-sized the filesystems to fill the new partitions.  My disk/partition setup is the following
    /dev/sda1        2048 488392703 488390656 232.9G  7 HPFS/NTFS/exFAT   (Storage)
    /dev/sdb1  *         2048    206847    204800  100M  7 HPFS/NTFS/exFAT   (System reserved)
    /dev/sdb2          206848 102402047 102195200 48.7G  7 HPFS/NTFS/exFAT   (Windows 7)
    /dev/sdb3  *    102402048 141472127  39070080 18.6G 83 Linux   (Current Arch /)
    /dev/sdb4       141472128 250069679 108597552 51.8G 83 Linux   (Current Arch /home)
    /dev/sdc2  *       206848 105064447 104857600   50G 83 Linux   (New Arch /)
    /dev/sdc3       105064448 234441647 129377200 61.7G 83 Linux   (New Arch /home)
After I resized the filesystems, I then created a new grub.cfg file (on /dev/sdb3) that is aware of the new Arch system.  I can boot to both my current and new Arch installs and run them fine, but ultimately I want to remove the current Arch install so I can make more room for my Windows 7 install.  What do I need to do to grub, so it knows to use the new Arch system.

@Xyne - Thanks!  Installing grub on my /dev/sdc did the trick.  Because I dd'ed my old setup to a new drive, /boot/grub was already populated, so all I had to do was install and configure grub on the new drive via the following.
    grub-install --target=i386-pc --recheck --debug /dev/sdx
    grub-mkconfig -o /boot/grub/grub.cfg
I used os-prober to find the other OS's (Windows 7 and my old Arch).  After some testing, I will wipe my old Arch setup and then resize Windows into the free space.

  • How to restart iTunes after Windows re-install

Hi, I hope someone out there can help me. My computer crashed and I had to reinstall Windows (XP Pro). The computer guy moved my iTunes to another drive so the reinstall did not overwrite iTunes. I can see my iTunes music in folders, but when I go to play them, they open in a whole new version of iTunes that was not - at the beginning - populated with any music and, obviously, the new iTunes contains none of my playlists or rankings for any of my songs. I'm not a computer genius (or anywhere close), so I'm not sure what's happened or how I can get my old iTunes reactivated so I don't have to recreate playlists or re-rank my songs. Many thanks!

Authorize iTunes install from the tool bar.
If library was backed up properly you can tell iTunes to use the library file that was backed up. If not backed up properly then add the files to iTunes yourself then recreate any playlists you want.

If you have all your music on the cmputer then i would connect up my phone uncheck the Sync Music option and apply.
This should take all the music off your phone .Then you can resync the music back on to it.
If this doesn't work maybe a restore to factory settings and start from scratch is the way to go

The song____could not be used, because the original file could not be found. Anybody know how to fix this in windows os?

I am getting this same message.  I recently bought a new Macbook Pro and the geeks transferred my files from my mini-mac.  Perhaps they did not transfer something critical?  I follow the "locate" option when it asks to find my files and I get a file folder that has a red circle with a white bar in the middle.
I have the same issues with my downloaded movies but my apps all seem to be fine.
Even more confusing - it seems to allow random songs to play and download on my Macbook and other devices.  But most of my music - whether downloaded from iTunes or my CD collection comes up with that message about the original file.
Should I get new geeks to locate these files on my old mini-mac?

  • How much space does a Windows 7 install take on a Mac?

How much space does a Windows 7 install take on a Mac?

Installation of Windows 7 is required at least around 20GB of disk space 64bit version, 32bit version is around 16GB, 100GB is a sensible amount of disk space for a Windows installation, I suppose.

  • No network connection after windows 10 install

No internet connection after windows 10 install- laptop wont recognize any wi-fi networks- repair option on MY ATT has no option for windows 10 system

    Hi,
Sorry about that. One other thing to try is to try this in the command prompt:
Start - All Programs - Accessories and right click on Command Prompt, select "Run as Administrator" to open a command prompt. [For Windows 8 or 10: <Windows Logo> + x - Command Prompt(Admin)]
Reset WINSOCK entries to installation defaults: netsh winsock reset catalog
Reset IPv4 TCP/IP stack to installation defaults. netsh int ipv4 reset reset.log
Reset IPv6 TCP/IP stack to installation defaults. netsh int ipv6 reset reset.log
    Reboot the machine
If still having issues, you may need to uninstall your network adapter and install it again.

  • [solved] how to fix a confused grub?

I recently installed a SSD on my laptop and put arch on it.
On my "old" HDD I had another Arch install and a windows install which I never touched again after having arch running on SSD.
To be able to boot into windows I installed os-prober and did
    grub-mkconfig -o /boot/grub/grub.cfg
The windows OS was found, as well as my old Arch install. I can now boot both BUT my main OS on the SSD fails because /sbin/init is no longer there. I think os-prober did generate a false cfg file here...
(I did not make a backup)
    How can I fix this?

Thanks for your answer. I fixed it by chrooting in from CD and adding the init= ... to the kernel options manually. I am sure i used the right HDD and the right grub. I don't know why grub-mkconfig failes to generate a proper entry. first i thought that os-prober is the culprit but removal of this didn't change much.
I installed systemd-sysvcompat now and hope things will stay ok
    Thank you for your time!

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities
You can do it with third-party programs, but I don't recommend it because you can damage the hard drive. The best way to do it is to delete your Windows volume and create it again with the size you need

  • How to fix blown out window highlights

I'm a Realtor (www.MikeBishop.ca ) and when I take pictures of my clients homes I sometimes get blown out windows in the pictures. Is there a way to fix blown out windows in photoshop  CS3?
    Thanks Mike

I noticed that at least one of your photos was taken with a Canon PowerShot SD750.
This is a Point & Shoot and can only shoot jpgs.
Things like blown out highlights in windows, sky, etc. is not surprising given the abilities of the camera.
If you had a DSLR and shot RAW files you would have more leeway with adjusting photos using Adobe Camera Raw. RAW files have the full image data direct from the image sensor. All cameras, including DLSR throw away a lot of image data when they produce jpgs in the camera.
Its not a miracle worker on a single photo that has blown out highlights, but if you use a tripod and shoot several shots bracketing the exposures you end up with a lot more image data to work with. Most, but usually not the lowest end DSLRs, have a bracketing function that does this automatically,  you don't have to adjust the exposure manually for each shot. Then with your bracketed shots you could better adjust them. Do things like "Load files into Stack" and mask out parts of each image.
This may be more expensive and more involved that what you were hoping for.
However, you can open your original jpgs in Adobe Camera Raw and you can adjust some elements fairly easily.
Since the jpgs have already a lot of image data thrown away, you can't do nearly as much as with RAW files.
One thing I noticed is the color balance of some photos is off. You may be able to adjust some settings in your camera before you shoot. You could also adjust them in Photoshop or in Adobe Camera Raw which is a part of Photoshop.
A quick adjustment. the original feels cold as ice. Adjusting the color makes for a more inviting photo.
Which photo do you think is more likely to help sell the house?
This is from a small photo with low resolution so not so great. But it gives a idea about some possibilities.

  • How do I use existing sync key after Windows clean install?

    Hi,
I had setup Firefox Sync on my old Windows 7 install and I have the Sync Key given during the set up. I had to clean install (format C drive) my Windows.
Is there any way I can use the old Sync Key to get all my bookmarks and stuff back?

    The problem has resolved itself...
...despite spending several pointless hours trying to delete the existing BootCamp drivers without success, I finally restarted Windows yet again - and this time I was easily able to delete the existing drivers.
I then restarted my Mac, installed the latest drivers without issue and it all works just fine.
    Windows, eh?!
