[Solved] How to mount multi-device btrfs filesystem under systemd?

I am running full, native systemd. It always has an error during boot trying to mount my new, multi-device btrfs filesystem. There was no problem with mounting the filesystem when it resided on a single disk drive.
When it fails, it allows me to enter my root password and have a console. In this console, I can successfully mount the btrfs filesystem. Then boot continues normally, and then I can use the filesystem with no further problems, until the next reboot.
btrfs filesystem show /dev/sda4
failed to read /dev/sr0

Total devices 2 FS bytes used 31.67GB

devid 1 size 100.00GB used 42.02GB path /dev/sda4
Btrfs Btrfs v0.19
I looked up btrfs in the wiki, and it says I have to run "btrfs device scan" before I can mount the filesystem. "This is the purpose of the btrfs mkinitcpio hook or the USEBTRFS variable in /etc/rc.conf" I do not have an rc.conf.  I do not know how to do this with systemd. What do I need to do to resolve this?

I added the btrfs hook as per the previous post. I ran "mkinitcpio -p linux". I ran grub-mkconfig. I rebooted and got the exact same problem. I did see the message early in the boot output that the btrfs hook was executed.
Here are the error messages:
[ 203.780864] device label TimBTRFS devid 1 transid 140 /dev/sda4
[ 203.781779] btrfs: disk space caching is enabled
[ 203.790133] btrfs: failed to read chunk tree on sda4
[ 203.790973] btrfs: open_ctree failed
Again, in the root console, I simply mounted the filesystem ("mount -t btrfs /dev/sda4 /btrfs"), typed Ctrl-d, and the bootup continued normally and successfully.
I need help, please.

  • How to mount encrypted multi-device BTRFS-volumes using systemd?

    I recently switched to systemd and have some issues with a multi-device (raid1) btrfs volume.
    My fstab contains this line for the volume:
    /dev/mapper/archive1 /mnt/archive btrfs device=/dev/mapper/archive1,device=/dev/mapper/archive2,device=/dev/mapper/archive3,device=/dev/mapper/archive4,defaults,noatime,nodiratime 0 0
    As you can see, the volume consits of four LUKS mapper devices, which must all be present for the volume to be mounted.
    The problem now is that systemd doesn't recognize the dependency for my volume to all four crypto mappers. It tries to mount the volume as soon as /dev/mapper/archive1 is in place, which fails very often.
    So how do I manually set the dependency? I tried adding cryptsetup.target to /etc/systemd/system/local-fs.target.wants without success.
    Thanks
    lynix

    I found the time to write the custom .mount file and it seems to fix the issue, indeed
    [Unit]
    Description=/mnt/archive
    Wants=cryptsetup.target
    After=cryptsetup.target
    [Mount]
    What=/dev/mapper/archive1
    Where=/mnt/archive
    Type=btrfs
    Options=defaults,noatime,nodiratime
    The mount point in question is still listed in my /etc/fstab, the .mount file takes precedence like stated in `man systemd.mount`.

    Basically, whenever I attempt to mount a USB device in Thunar, I get a message that says:

    My .xinitrc looks like:
    exec ck-launch-session dbus-launch openbox-session

    Check for *.pacnew files in '/etc/pam.d/' (specifically /etc/pam.d/slim.pacnew).

  • [nothing to do/solved]unable to mount external devices after update

    Hi,
    in recent times I was unable to mount usb-sticks for example after a kernel update, I assume. The first time mount didnt know the fstype vfat nor any other.. and now the second time the device wasnt even listed under /dev. dmesg told me that the device was recognized though. Rebooting the system fixed it both times, but this isnt really satisfying.
    Since I am not that knowledgeable, I would like to know what I could have tried.
    Thanks

    There's nothing wrong here. You updated the kernel and didn't reboot. The modules needed for the drive did not exist when you tried to mount it.

  • How do I unsynch devices ( iphones, ipads) under the same apple ID account?

    After the software update I started receiving my husband's text message.

    You can use separate AppleIDs for iCloud, iMessage and iTunes - you just need to create unique AppleIDs for the iCloud accounts if syncing contacts that way (you will need an email address that is not already registered as an AppleID though to get another AppleID).
    Apps are a different matter in that purchases are tied to the AppleID used to log in to the store to make the purchase.  So you can create another AppleID for iTunes as well and use different ones on the different phones, but any apps you have already purchased with your existing AppleID are permanently tied to that AppleID.
    Really, unless you are sharing apps, content and such, there is no reason to use the same AppleID on each anyway.  So the simplest solution is to create new AppleID(s) for the second device.  If you need an email address to do that, just get a gmail account (or hotmail, yahoo or any other free email account).

    Mr. Elendig:
    Why not use automounting instead?
    To install Arch packages I needed an Internet connection, which required use of a Sierra Wireless card, which required chatscripts stored on another filesystem.  In my first Arch forum post ever, the one preceding this one, I learned to mount a device by creating a mountpoint in /media then invoking #mount.  After installing all packages and creating a user name, I signed on with xfce4 and plugged in the usb device again.  It didn't mount.  So I did it manually using sudo.  Since that worked I had the idea that adding the mountpoints to /etc/fstab would be useful, so I did.  When that didn't work I decided to just ask for help.
    So sure, I'm down for some automounting action.  How do I do it?

    Ok, this seems to work with android devices but not with iOS. Also when I run detect while my iPhone is plugged in, device list is empty:

    No raw devices found.
    Main goal is to return support of iOS.

  • How to mount BTRFS subvolume?

    Hi all, I created a BTRFS volume in RAID 5 mode (label is 'raid5') across 3 raw disks (hdb, hdc, hdd) and mounted it in /media/raid5. I then created a few subvolumes including a 'home' subvolume. Prior to this, I had the whole system mounted in / on an ext4 partition.
    Question: How do I mount that raid5.home subvolume into /home, and the other subvolumes elsewhere?

    If you don't know how to mount a subvolume, you probably don't follow btrfs development very closely (read: at all).  That being the case, I just want to point out that btrfs is still often considered experimental, and the btrfs raid5/6 support is brand-spanking-new and considered entirely unstable.  So you should not be using it if you care at all about your data.  (But if you are using btrfs in the first place, you should have working, tested backups anyway, right?)
    For information more directly related to your question, please see the btrfs wiki. You should really read through that if you want to use btrfs anyway.  And I'm talking about https://btrfs.wiki.kernel.org not the btrfs page in the Arch wiki.  This question is about how to use one of the more basic functionalities of btrfs, so it is well documented, and the information can be found all over the internets.

  • [Solved] KDE 4.10 : Mounted Android Device as a Camera?

    I've been using Arch with MATE Desktop for a long time and then finally made a move to KDE 4.10. I love all features in KDE,
    and one of them is auto-mounting Android devices. The problem is, when I plugged in my phone, KDE doesn't recognized it as a USB Storage, but mounted it as 'USB PTP Class Camera'. (I'm using HTC One X)
    As a result of this, I can't copy any files to my phone. I have tried other ways such as using go-mtpfs (when I'm using MATE) but still failed. That was actually the main reason why I chose KDE, because of the auto-mount (Android) system. The auto-mount worked, but cut/copy/paste is not. Any help will greatly be appeciated!

(Before this I have tried kio-mtp-git from AUR, yeah because I followed the guide from ArchWiki but it failed to get the job done. Somebody please edit that part in ArchWiki.)

  • How to consume service made in java in Multi-device hybrid App

    I'm doing a project in the newly launched Multi-Device Hybrid App and I need to consume existing wsdl services made in java. But I'm not able to find the way to add the service reference as can be done in other project types. Please Enlighten me.

    Hi MaGirl,
    This forum is for questions about Visual Studio Integrate, yours seems to be irrelevant。 Please elaborate with detailed information:
    1. What kind of project? Winform, WPF, ASP.NET or VS extensibility projects?
    2. What language? C#, VB.NET, C++ or?
    3. What kind of wsdl? Does svcutil.exe work for you to generate a proxy client class?
    4. What error message did you get?

  • How do you mount a device like normal unix?

    Hi,
    I'm trying to secure some files by encrypting a disk image (DMG file). I'm doing everything through the terminal so that I can script it.
    For the first step I want to mount the disk image file. But, I'm struggling to find a way to mount the disk image so that it becomes a normal part of the file system. Under Linux I would do something like this:
    $ mount -t ext3 /dev/hda1 /home/steve/projects/privatemount
    Under Mac OS X, I can't get it to work. I found a hdiutil command but there are all sorts of issues between it and the Finder. The closest I've got is this:
    $ hdiutil attach -verbose -nobrowse -mountpoint /Users/steve/Projects/privmount /Users/steve/Projects/private-encrypted.sparseimage
    Which mounts it as a directory from terminal (great), and doesn't show it up in the Finder as a removable device (great). But, the problem is that you can unmount it (hdiutil detach) while you're accessing the directory i.e editing a file. This is no good because I could lose files (seems like a bug to me). If I edit the file from vim from the command line then lsof shows the file being used. But if you access the file through the Finder i.e edit it with textmate, then lsof doesn't see the file access!
    Does anyone know what the magic incantation is to mount a device from the terminal as you would a normal UNIX, have the Finder not show it as a removable device, and ensure that you can't unmount it while a user is accessing the contents?
    Thanks,
    Steve

    Hi Bill,
    Yeah that works but it shows it as a removable disk (as your second post pointed out). I'm hoping there's a solution where it won't show up as a removable disk. It's just annoying not being able to stitch together a seamless file system from a bunch of disk images!
    Thanks,
    Steve
