[SOLVED] Kernel 2.6.38-ck-core2+M-Audio Mobile Pre USB–Sound crackling

Hello all,
I've been finally able to set up a working configuration for making music with my computer. I have installed Jack, with PulseAudio as a Jack client to use Skype, and configured ALSA 1.0.24. I have specified working values in my /etc/security/limits.conf in order to get rt priority.
At first I let Arch using the latest version of kernel 2.6.37. With that sound system config and kernel 2.6.37, sound is just perfect for my needs.
Then I wanted to try out kernel 2.6.38-ck-core2, just to see if there were any differences. I installed it and restarted my computer into the 2.38 kernel.
Now the trouble begins: when I use Arch with kernel 2.6.38, I can hear some distorsions, more like crackling, in audio files (MP3, FLAC, even sound from Flash...). The crackling is not always audible, I mean that it's random, but it plays during like 5 seconds, then disappears, and then plays again... And this happens in any audio stream.
At first I thought that maybe Jack was having some issues. So I deactivated it, which implied I also deactivated its client, PulseAudio. And I routed everything directly to ALSA.
But I was still having that distorted, crackling sound...
So... I'm wondering if anyone here has experienced this problem. I'm suspecting the ALSA modules in kernel 2.6.38-ck-core2.
I'll try to test more with kernel-2.6.38-ck and keep you informed if I find somehting.
Thanks )
Chris

Hey all,
First I'd like to apologize: the problem is solved and was not related either to kernel 2.6.38-ck or ALSA 1.0.24. I spent hours suspecting ALSA while I shouldn't have been so determined.
In fact, it was all about my Jack config and the way I configured it to be "system-wide". I didn't realize it af first, but the latency I set was much too high (frame/period: 512). Moreover, it seems that even when I stopped qjackctl the jackd daemon was still running, due to the "system-wide" mode.
Since I lowered the latency (frame/period: 64), I have not heard any pop or crackling while running Arch with kernel 2.6.38-ck-core2. But I still don't understand why I didn't experience that problem with generic kernel 2.6.37, even with frame/period set at 512...
Anyway, this issue is solved. It was my mistake.

  • [SOLVED] Audio dropouts with USB sound card

    Hi! Recently I bought an external USB sound card (Music Fidelity V-DAC). If I plug in the USB cable the sound device is recognized by Phonon in KDE4 (kdemod).
    If I play an audio file in Amarok (or VLC) the audio is indeed redirected to the USB sound card and played correctly. However, if I use my USB mouse, or USB keyboard dropouts are occurring in the audio signal. It seems that other USB devices are interfering with my USB sound card.
    More details:
    Arch Linux with kernel 2.6.33 and kdemod 4. Phonon backend is Xine. I also tried gstreamer, but this crashes Amarok/

    I also tried an Ubuntu (9.10) live CD. Using ALSA or Pulseaudio a clean audio signal without dropouts is produced.
    I wonder if someone can help me with this problem, or point me to more information. Thanks!

    Thanks for your suggestion. I added the following line to my /etc/modprobe.d/modprobe.conf file:
    options snd-usb-audio enable_msi=1
    After a reboot the problem still persists. I also tried another suggestion from this forum:
    options snd-usb-audio nrpacks=1
    This doesn't work either. I tried to change settings in /etc/security/limits.conf, which looks like this:
    @audio - rtprio 99
    @audio - nice -10
    @audio - memlock 250000
    The USB sound card doesn't share a IRQ with another USB devices, as can be seen here:

  • [SOLVED] USB sound broblem.

    Greetings everyone. Kinda sucks making my first post on new boards this way.
    Can't say I am very experienced linux-wise, but until now I successfully overcame all problems I've encountered. On this one I can't even think where to start, because all this kernel stuff is kinda complicated to me yet.
    After initial install all hardware were detected and working well. During days of polishing system I lost track of changes and can't really say what triggered my USB sound card disappearance. At first I was blaming ALSA, but then I checked kernel.log:

    As you can see: there is no usb 6-1 "After". Let ALSA messing alone (because it seems unrelated) so far I tried:
    - different USB ports
    - reinstalling kernel
    Any tips or solutions are welcome.

    After reinstalling udev, I atleast started to getting following things:
    Oct 15 18:22:36 localhost kernel: usb 7-1: new full speed USB device using uhci_hcd and address 2
    Oct 15 18:22:36 localhost kernel: usb 7-1: device descriptor read/64, error -71

    Oct 15 18:22:36 localhost kernel: usb 7-1: device descriptor read/64, error -71
    Oct 15 18:22:36 localhost kernel: usb 7-1: new full speed USB device using uhci_hcd and address 4
    Oct 15 18:22:36 localhost kernel: usb 7-1: device descriptor read/64, error -71
    Oct 15 18:22:36 localhost kernel: usb 7-1: new full speed USB device using uhci_hcd and address 5
    Oct 15 18:22:36 localhost kernel: usb 7-1: device descriptor read/64, error -71
    I tried echo -1 >/sys/module/usbcore/parameters/autosuspend as somewhere suggested, but didn't help a bit.
    There is also solution to disable USB 2.0 via modprobe -r ehci_hcd, but I cannot allow that because through this device I stream much bigger bandwidth, than USB1.0/1.1 can handle.
    EDIT:
    - tried to remove and modify /etc/modprobe.d/usb-load-ehci-first.conf to ohci load first
    - tried to add "irqpoll" as kernel option
    - echo Y > /sys/module/usbcore/parameters/old_scheme_first
    No luck.
    EDIT2:
    Alright people. The device is gone for good. Other computers cannot see it as well, neither Windows 7 on media center or Ubuntu on laptop. Dunno if Arch fried it somehow ^_^

  • [SOLVED] USB sound card problems and audio setup

    I want to clarify and correctly set up my ThinkPad T61 sound system finally.
    I'm running Arch64 + KDE.
    There are two sound cards - the internal HDA Intel and external USB CM118.
    aplay -l
    **** List of PLAYBACK Hardware Devices ****
    card 0: Set [C-Media USB Headphone Set], device 0: USB Audio [USB Audio]
    Subdevices: 1/1
    Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
    card 1: Intel [HDA Intel], device 0: AD198x Analog [AD198x Analog]
    Subdevices: 0/1
    Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
    card 1: Intel [HDA Intel], device 1: AD198x Digital [AD198x Digital]
    Subdevices: 1/1
    Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
    First of all, why are there both analog and digital subdevices?
    I just need playback and/or recording support for these applications: opera, firefox, skype, clementine, mplayer, vmplayer. As high quality as possible.
    Per-application sound control would be nice but if that adds too much clutter, I could live without it. No need for audio streaming or any other luxuries.
    All the applications should use the USB card whenever it's plugged in. The internal SC should take over when CM118 is unplugged.
    The problem is that most of the time it doesn't work. For example, if I plug out the USB card and then run some application like Clementine or Firefox there would be no sound ("connection refused" in Clementine).
    Here is my asound.conf:
    defaults.pcm.card 0
    defaults.pcm.device 0
    defaults.ctl.card 0
    Also kMix/amix should switch the master channel from HDA Intel Master to C-Media Master automatically. The only way to do this is to write some kind of script, right?
    AFAIK the following audio components are installed: ALSA, OSS (for some unknown reason), Phonon, Gstreamer.
    I guess I can uninstall OSS without worries as no one seems to need it (checked with "whoneeds").
    What about that Phonon? Would it override the asoud.conf if I set default device there? Why there are so many different devices in the Phonon configuration list:
    C-Media USB Headphone Set, USB Audio (Default Audio Device)
    C-Media USB Headphone Set (USB Audio)
    C-Media USB Headphone Set, USB Audio (IECblablabla)
    hw:1,0
    hw:1,1
    default
    Intel Analog
    Intel Digital
    blablalba
    And that C-Media triplet for every USB port the CM118 has been plugged in.
    Too much confusion! All that mess for just two different cards.
    So what is the proper way of setting primary and secondary sound cards in this situation?
    Thank you!

    I am sorry for my very late response and the lack of structure in my post.
    I did some investigation and found a rather acceptable workaround for one of my problems described below.
    Here is the basic functionality I need:
    1. Automatic (on the fly) switching to the external sound card when it's plugged in and automatic fallback to the integrated SC when usb is unplugged.
    2. Automatic (on the fly) switching of the kMix's master channel according to the changes mentioned above.
    As for the first problem, I found this udev rule:
    KERNEL=="pcmC[D0-9cp]*", ACTION=="add", PROGRAM="/bin/sh -c 'K=%k; K=$${K#pcmC}; K=$${K%%D*}; echo defaults.ctl.card $$K > /etc/asound.conf; echo defaults.pcm.card $$K >>/etc/asound.conf"
    KERNEL=="pcmC[D0-9cp]*", ACTION=="remove", PROGRAM="/bin/sh -c 'echo defaults.ctl.card 0 > /etc/asound.conf; echo defaults.pcm.card 0 >>/etc/asound.conf'"
    This solution has some disadvantages but it is acceptible. If you know of any better solution, please tell me.
    For the second problem, I found this script which uses qdbus org.kde.kmix /Mixers org.kde.KMix.MixSet.setCurrentMaster method to set the master channel. However, I think that constant monitoring for the usb SC being plugged is not very effective. So I thought appending the following code to the second line of the previous udev rule would do the work:
    , RUN+="/usr/bin/qdbus org.kde.kmix /Mixers org.kde.KMix.MixSet.setCurrentMaster "ALSA::C-Media_USB_Headphone_Set:1" "Speaker:0""
    But that results in some weird behaviour: master channel stays the same but there would be three new tabs in the kMix window now: USB Set", USB Set# and USB Set$.
    Here's what log messages tell us:

    You see, the probe thing is running multiple times!
    And here is an excerpt from udev debugger:
    starting '/usr/bin/qdbus org.kde.kmix /Mixers org.kde.KMix.MixSet.setCurrentMaster '
    '/usr/bin/qdbus org.kde.kmix /Mixers org.kde.KMix.MixSet.setCurrentMaster '(err) 'Could not connect to D-Bus server: org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.NotSupported: Unable to autolaunch a dbus-daemon without a $DISPLAY for X11'
    '/usr/bin/qdbus org.kde.kmix /Mixers org.kde.KMix.MixSet.setCurrentMaster ' [2769] exit with return code 1
    Some kind of X11 problem... And also happening twice! Why?
    Running the setCurrentMaster method in terminal works very nicely, so the problem must be the way udev runs it.
    One last thing - sometimes the usb SC automatically reconnects (disconnects and connects). I read somewhere that most probably the usb device makes the trouble, but maybe there are other possiblities?

  • [SOLVED] Alsamixer always on 0 vol. when plugging in USB sound card

    Hi.
    I have another newbie question!
    This time my problem is about sound.
    Every time I plug in my USB sound card, alsamixer forgets its previous volume and sets it to 0.
    I tried "alsactl -f /var/lib/alsa/asound.state store" as said in the wiki for storing the settings, even tried to delete the file before doing so.
    I even tried simply "alsactl store" or something like that.
    No matter how many times I set it to  100, alsa just forgets it. In pavucontrol I see the volume meter showing that the sound is okay (I guess I mean the sound stream?), but I have to start alsamixer every time I want to use my USB sound card. And because it's a notebook, I usually plug/unplug it like 5 times a day, so keeping it plugged in is not an option.
    Just because of curiosity I tried it on a Fedora 15 live and it was working like a charm so I know there is a solution, I just can't find it.
    What should I do?
    Thanks in advance!

    Sorry, but I failed.
    First, I tried "ls -ltr /dev/$(find /dev -type f)", output:
    [martin@faye ~]$ ls -ltr /dev/$(find /dev -type f)
    ls: cannot access /dev//dev/shm/pulse-shm-1778335859: No such file or directory

    -r-------- 1 martin users 67108904 Jun 18 21:44 /dev/shm/pulse-shm-2211428343
    The first line seems to be wrong, so the command modified to this: "ls -ltr $(find /dev -type f)", output changed to this:
    [martin@faye ~]$ ls -ltr $(find /dev -type f)
    -r-------- 1 martin users 67108904 Jun 18 21:10 /dev/shm/pulse-shm-1367368951

    To be honest, I don't even know what I should see here... :S
    Typing "udevadm control --log-priority=debug" haven't told me anything, so I don't know if it was okay or not.
    Afterwards I started Fedora live, went to the udev rules, the only suspicious file was "90-alsa-tools-firmware.rules", but it was about loading some firmware for some specific sound cards.
    After reading that, I tried this rule:
    SUBSYSTEM=="usb", RUN+="/root/alsa-usb.sh"
    - It was a failure.
    After searching in the above mentioned link and the Arch udev Wiki I tried this:
    KERNEL=="sd*", SUBSYSTEM=="usb", RUN+="/root/alsa-usb.sh"
    - Failure as well. Kernel "sd*" because I don't know what else.
    Then I google'd some more and the closest I could find was the following:
    KERNEL=="audio1", SUBSYSTEM=="sound", RUN+="/root/alsa-usb.sh"
    - Failure.
    At this point I don't know what to do. (Strange, eh?)
    I guess my udev rule is incorrect in 2 points: kernel and subsystem. How could I check those? I tried lspci, because I've heard about it somewhere, but I don't think it is useful for me.

  • [SOLVED] Kernel 2.6.32, PS/2 mouse no longer working

    With the latest 2.6.32 kernel my generic PS/2 mouse doesn't work anymore. Downgrading to 2.6.31.x fixes the issue.
    Last edited by Taylor001 (2009-12-29 14:18:27)

    I was bitten by the very same problem when I upgraded to kernel 2.6.32.2 yesterday: my mouse pretended to be dead!  After much trial-and-error I was able to solve the problem by adding the following line to /etc/modprobe.d/modprobe.conf:
    options psmouse proto=imps
    The "kernel-parameters.txt" file from the kernel documentation tells you about all possible values.  After that I had to cold boot my system (that means I had to power it off, wait for fifteen seconds and then power it on again) to reset the mouse properly, but since then it's working correctly again.  Maybe that will help you too.

  • WORKAROUND/SOLVED: Kernel panic on Macbook Air 5,2 on Lion 10.7.5 on wake

    Hi all. I had been getting plagued by kernel panics with my relatively new Macbook Air (which I otherwise have had no issues with) when I did the following in sequence:
    While connected to a power supply, lock screen
    Close the lid
    Disconnect power supply
    Open the lid
    For me, this seemed to have been caused by the Automatically adjust brightness option. To access it, go to System Preferences > Displays > Automatically adjust brightness, and uncheck the box. I also unchecked similar options that dim the screen before sleep in Energy Saver. This seems to have fixed it. I'm including the full kernel panic report -- if you're having problems with kernel panics, give it a try. I'm going to see for the next few days if this solves the issue. My guess is that this option and the display driver for this computer are really not playing well together in this version of Lion. I tried various other things:
    Disabling bluetooth
    Using pmset to set the hibernatemode to 0 as well as 25
    Restting SMC
    and none of them fixed it. This did, though, or at least it seems that way -- I am going to check for the next few days and see how it does. I am not running any third party kexts, though I do have a few third party launch agents for daemons, servers and such which have been installed via Homebrew. Feel free to comment. I am definitely a little underwhelmed by this kind of behavior coming from what is a several thousand dollar piece investment that is the most important piece of equipment for me to do my work on any given day, but if I can bypass it for now without too much of a loss in functionality, so be it.

  • [SOLVED] Kernel bug fix, works for me!

    Having been hit by the kernel bug that interferes with internet access & having to downgrade the kernel to escape the bug.  I am happy to say that after reading a bug report on the subject here:
    http://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=11721
    Courtesy of a link posted by Misfit138, I found deep down in the report dialogue that the following command as root, worked for the poster of the bug:
    echo 0 > /proc/sys/net/ipv4/tcp_timestamps
    So I did a yaourt -Syu & found amongst other packages a minor kernel update, which did not solve my internet problems, but after su, & then entering the above command in the Terminal my internet works as it should!
    If this solution works for you, then add the following to your /etc/sysctl.conf:
    #Temporary workaround for tcp issue with 2.6.27
    net.ipv4.tcp_timestamps = 0
    Thanks again Misfit138
    I hope this solution works for all of the other bug bitten members of the Arch (& Linux) community!

  • [Solved] kernel 2.6.27 - Root device not found (2.6.28 too)

    since the last kernel update, my ArchLinux won't boot anymore, as it seems to be unable to find the root partition "/dev/sda5". The exact output is:
    :: Loading root filesystem module...
    Attempting to create root device '/dev/sda5'
    ERROR: Failed to parse block device name for '/dev/sda5'
    unknown
    ERROR: root fs cannot be detected. Try using the rootfstype= kernel parameter.
    Waiting for devices to settle...done.
    Root device '/dev/sda5' doesn't exist, attempting to create it
    ERROR: Failed to parse block device name for '/dev/sda5'
    ERROR: Unable to create/detect root device '/dev/sda5'
    Dropping to a recovery shell... type 'exit' to reboot
    NOTE: klibc contains no 'ls' binary, use 'echo *' instead
    If the device '/dev/sda5' gets created while you are here,
    try adding 'rootdelay=8' or higher to the kernel command-line
    ramfs$
    What I have tried:
    1.- I have booted with an old Ubuntu LiveCD, and /dev/sda5 seems to be working and healthy, as it mounted flawlessly while in Ubuntu.
    2.- I have also found that not even /dev/sda is created from the fallback recovery shell so, obviously, there is no root device to create.
    3.- None of the suggested kernel command-line parameters worked: 'rootfstype=ext3' and/or 'rootdelay=8'(I mean, using them separately or both in the same kernel GRUB line) didn't give any positive result, or any behavior change.
    And now, two questions:
    1.- How can I fix this?
    2.- If it's not possible, how can I downgrade the kernel from a LiveCD? I suppose this is possible by booting an ArchLinux LiveCD, chrooting my '/dev/sda5' finding a 2.26.X kernel pacman package and installing, but I'm almost iliterate in kernel issues, and some help would be nice.
    Thank you all in advance!
    EDIT: Oh, I have also waited for some time to see if the hard disk gets ready after the failed booting proccess but it seems it doesn't, so 'rootdelay=8' wouldn't help anyway, just to give some more details about the problem.

    Of course I can, it's quite easy.
    First of all, you have to boot from an Archlinux install CD, to have an usable environment. Once you have booted, I will assume a couple of things to make the examples, which are:
    "/dev/sda2" is the root partition where the system is currently installed but not booting.
    "/dev/sda1" is the boot partition (not needed if you don't have a separated boot partition, obviously).
    "/mnt/myarch" is the directory where sda1 will be mounted on the live session.
    The kernel version on sda2 is "2.6.27-ARCH", you can find which kernel versions are installed on sda2 by checking the directory names under "/lib/modules/"
    Next you have to mount your root partition on any directory and mount the "boot" partition if you have one too:
    mkdir /mnt/myarch #Creates the mount directory on the live session, you can use /mnt/ so this command is not neccesary
    mount -t auto /dev/sda2 /mnt/myarch #Mount the root partition on the live session
    mount -t auto /dev/sda1 /mnt/myarch/boot #Mount the boot partition, if you have to
    Now, you'll have to bind three system directories to their true locations on the root partition:
    mount -t proc proc /mnt/myarch/proc
    mount -t sysfs sys /mnt/myarch/sys
    mount -o bind /dev /mnt/myarch/dev
    Next step is to use the command "chroot <target> <consolebin>" to "move" the system root to the <target> directory, using the <consolebin> command interpreter:
    chroot /mnt/myarch/ /bin/bash
    Now, you will be using your system just like if you had actually booted from your hard disk, but running the kernel from the liveCD, so the only remaining step is to generate the initcpio image.
    In the example for this step, I will run the mkinitcpio twice, the first one to check that it's correctly generated, and the second to install it, using the parameter "-g". Another thing to keep in mind is that even before chrooting, the liveCD kernel is still running, so you will have tu use the "-k <kernelversion>" parameter to manually specify the kernel to use. Otherwise, mkinitcpio won't be able to find the correct modules to use:
    mkinitcpio -k 2.6.27-ARCH #This will simulate the generation, if it runs fine, run the next command
    mkinitcpio -g /boot/kernel26.img -k 2.6.27-ARCH #This will actually generate the image
    And that's all, this should regenerate a default image. More info about mkinitcpio: http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Mkinitcpio
    Hope this heps
    PS: Sweden, nice country .
    I follow this guide and I saved my Arch installation. I don't know why the HOOKS array in my mkinitcpio.conf just contains "base" :-?
    So, just before regenerate the ramdisk image I edit my /etc/mkinitcpio.conf and add all the neccessary hooks and generate. I can bring my Arch box back to life

  • SOLVED: kernel loads, but doesn't have a root file system

    Hi,
    The system is an Asus X202E. It does UEFI and has a GPT partition system. I've gotten through that part. And it is clear to me that the kernel loads.
    It's the next step that's giving me grief. I've tried this with two bootloaders: gummiboot and rEFInd.
    With gummiboot, the kernel panics because it can't mount the root file system. With rEFInd, it gets to the intial ramdisk and then drops me to a shell, apparently because the root file system is set to null, and it obviously can't mount that as "real root".
    Here is what I posted on the Arch mailing list, documenting that I have indeed specified the correct root (I'm copying this from the email, eliding the unfortunate line wraps):
    bridge-live# cat /boot/loader/entries/arch.conf
    Title Arch Linux
    linux /vmlinuz-linux
    initrc /initramfs-linux.img
    options root=PARTUUID=d5bb2ad1-9e7d-4c75-b9b6-04865dd77782
    bridge-live# ls -l /dev/disk/by-partuuid
    total 0
    lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 10 Apr 15 19:26 0ab4d458-cd09-4bfb-a447-5f5fa66332e2 -> ../../sda6
    lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 10 Apr 15 19:26 3e12caeb-1424-451c-898e-a4ff05eab48d -> ../../sda7
    lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 10 Apr 15 19:26 432a977b-f26d-4e75-b9ee-bf610ee6f4a4 -> ../../sda3
    lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 10 Apr 15 19:26 95a1d2c2-393a-4150-bbd2-d8e7179e7f8a -> ../../sda2
    lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 10 Apr 15 19:26 a4b797d9-0868-4bd1-a92d-f244639039f5 -> ../../sda4
    lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 10 Apr 15 19:26 d5bb2ad1-9e7d-4c75-b9b6-04865dd77782 -> ../../sda8
    lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 10 Apr 15 19:26 ed04135b-bd79-4c7c-b3b5-b0f9c2fe6826 -> ../../sda1
    lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 10 Apr 15 19:26 f64f82a7-8f2b-4748-88b1-7b0c61e71c70 -> ../../sda5
    The root partition is supposed to be /dev/sda8, that is:
    lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 10 Apr 15 19:26 d5bb2ad1-9e7d-4c75-b9b6-04865dd77782 -> ../../sda8
    So the correct PARTUUID followed by the one I have specified in
    arch.conf is:
    d5bb2ad1-9e7d-4c75-b9b6-04865dd77782
    d5bb2ad1-9e7d-4c75-b9b6-04865dd77782
    I'm guessing that this is really the same problem with both gummiboot and with rEFInd, but don't really know. It's clear to me that the initrd is not being correctly constructed. So I removed /etc/mkinitcpio.conf and did, as per the Arch wiki,
    pacman -Syyu mkinitcpio linux udev
    No joy.
    I don't even know which way to go at this point. If I even knew how to tell it where the real disk is in the initial ram disk shell, that would help. Better of course, would be actually solving the problem.
    Thanks!

    I have made extremely limited progress on this issue.
    My previous attempt to specify the root partition in mkinitcpio.conf was insufficient. Furthermore, this is no place--despite the documentation--for the orthodoxy about using UUIDs rather than the straight /dev/sdx. In my case:
    root=/dev/sda8
    and run
    mkinitcpio -p linux
    It still drops me into the shell at boot. I can do
    mount /dev/sda8 /new_root/
    and exit the shell. It still won't believe it has the root device and drops me back in. I just exit.
    At this point, for a very brief moment, things look promising. It appears to be starting normally. Then, gdm.service, NetworkManager.service, and dbus.service all fail to start. There may be others but the screen goes by too quickly. At this point, it hangs trying to initialize the pacman keyring and all I can do is CTRL-ALT-DEL.
    It occurred to me that this might extend to the rEFInd configuration and so I modified it to also use /dev/sda8 rather than the UUID, but this made no difference. Trying to boot via gummiboot still yields the previously specified kernel panic.

  • [SOLVED] Kernel panic when using external USB hard drive

    I have a desktop PC with a 64 bit arch install, on a Core2 Duo 6320 CPU. I have been using (and continue using right now) a 500 GB "Iomega Desktop Hard Drive" external USB hard disk without problems. But I have just bought a 3 TB "Seagate Expansion" external USB hard drive and I'm unable to use it from my Arch install. Each time I try to format it or to copy data from the PC, Arch freezes with a kernel panic. Sometimes it freezes faster and I cannot see anything, but others I am able to see the following kernel messages, repeating several times:
    [11701.205071] sd 3:0:0:0: [sdf] uas_eh_abort_handler ffff880014e13380 tag 29, inflight: CMD

    [11704.483206] scsi host3: uas_eh_bus_reset_handler success
    Strange enough, the drive is listed by lsusb command as a 2TB but I don't think this is related to the problem (as the OS sees the 3 TB). This is the lsusb output:
    Bus 001 Device 003: ID 0bc2:3312 Seagate RSS LLC SRD00F2 [Expansion Desktop Drive 2TB]
    I have tried the drive on other PCs and it works flawlessly. Also tried booting Windows 8 on the same PC I have Arch installed in, and in Windows it also works perfect. I have tried using ext2 and NTFS filesystems. Tried also changing the USB cable without success. And right now I'm out of ideas. Any suggestions?

  • [SOLVED] kernel panic - no init found

    Hello:
    After my last system update, (including kernel) two problems appeared. First the magic files problem, solved with pacman -Qo, delleting and reinstalling (perhaps it has something to do with this problem). Second, this kernel panic when I restarted the pc.
    failed to execute /init
    kernel panic - no init found
    specify init= (or something similar)
    I get only these lines as error, before is the message of the freed kernel memory.
    At the moment I tried with the solutions that I have find at the forum:
    - Run with livecd, mount all (including boot, proc, sys, dev), chroot and
    mkinitcpio -p kernel26
    - Check if the partitions uuids are the correct ones in grub config.
    - Check if I have the symlink to asm in the includes, that someone report on the arch news that could be conflictive (I have a folder there).
    - Reinstall the kernel26, mkinitcpio, klibc, etc. all the stuff that I thought that could be related.
    - Specify in grub config init=/sbin/init, and check if the file was there-> there was a new message saying that also failed to execute /sbin/init
    The problem persists, and google doesn't helps and in the forum I can't find an answer neither. I don't know what else I can do, so all help will be apreciated
    Thank you
    PD: sorry for my English
    SOLVED:
    The problem was that mkinitcpio outputed an error with zgrep and I think that it wasn't changing nothing. I reinstalled gzip and no errors were reported, so the new ramdisk was created and now the system boots ok. The error with zgrep I think that it comes from my last upgrade, because I didn't have enough space and a lot of errors in a few packages appeared, the errors were cannot execute or file already exists in the system.
    Thanks for the answers.

    Seems init is present in the initrd image (very small image?):
    1199 blocks
    /bin/kinit
    /bin/run-init
    /init
    The initrd path I think it's also correctly setted up:
    # (0) Arch Linux
    title Arch Linux
    root (hd0,1)
    kernel /vmlinuz26 root=/dev/disk/by-uuid/bfb12545-43dd-49de-9a70-c8ab9926181c resume=/dev/sda5 ro
    initrd /kernel26.img
    # (1) Arch Linux
    title Arch Linux Fallback
    root (hd0,1)
    kernel /vmlinuz26 root=/dev/disk/by-uuid/bfb12545-43dd-49de-9a70-c8ab9926181c ro
    initrd /kernel26-fallback.img
    I have one separate boot partition, as you say, sda2, and the filesystem/general partition is sda6. I tried to put this names instead the uuids too, but didn't worked.
    The fallback image neither helped.
    I also tried to check if the partitions are ok (sda2 and sda6), with xfs_check and xfs_repair (filesystem it's xfs).
