[Solved] Libreoffice segfaults on startup in libicule.so.51.2

When I try to start Libreoffice, it just segfaults. The loading splash screen only flashes for a split second.
Here are a few log entry examples:
kernel: soffice.bin[10272]: segfault at 7f5ffc143820 ip 00007f600d3e2350 sp 00007fffb3735818 error 4 in libicule.so.51.2[7f600d3c0000+55000]

systemd-coredump[10849]: Process 10845 (soffice.bin) dumped core.
Research only led me to some Arch bug reports with the same problem [1] [2], but they are all marked as fixed.
And I'm running the versions that are the most recent as of this post:
local/libreoffice-calc 4.0.4-1 (libreoffice)
Spreadsheet application for LibreOffice.
local/libreoffice-common 4.0.4-1 (libreoffice)
common files for LibreOffice - a productivity suite that is compatible with other major office suites
local/libreoffice-de 4.0.4-1
German language pack for LibreOffice
local/libreoffice-impress 4.0.4-1 (libreoffice)
Presentation Application for LibreOffice.
local/libreoffice-writer 4.0.4-1 (libreoffice)
Word Processor Application for LibreOffice.
local/icu 51.2-1
International Components for Unicode library
local/fontconfig 2.10.93-1
A library for configuring and customizing font access
local/cairo 1.12.14-4
Cairo vector graphics library
local/freetype2 2.5.0.1-1
TrueType font rendering library
When I run libreoffice --backtrace, it starts up without segfaulting. But all text except in the work area is missing. Here are some screenshots: [1] [2]
Here is the gdbtrace.log:

Do you need "set solib-search-path" or "set sysroot"?

This is a new install, libreoffice was segfaulting from the moment I installed it, so I'm unable to check if a package update caused this. I have another install on which Libreoffice works fine.
I already tried reinstalling all the packages mentioned above and switching to infinality-bundle and back to vanilla again.
/Edit: Marking as solved.

Update: Solved it myself. The cause of this problem is the AUR package ttf-ms-win8, specifically the fonts /usr/share/fonts/TTF/segoeui*.ttf.

  • [solved]Firefox segfaults on start

    Hi,
since the last update my firefox segfaults on startup.
    knopwob@desktop ~ % firefox
[1] 20712 segmentation fault (core dumped) firefox
I tried downgrading firefox (together with xulrunner) but nothing changed. I've also rebuild firefox from abs, tried icecat and icecat-bin from AUR. All behave the same. I tried kazehakase to sort out that it's a problem with xulrunner and kazehakase runs fine.
I've also removed the .mozilla folder in my /home so it's not caused by a plugin either.
    Allways the same.
After that, i downloaded firefox vom mozilla.org extracted it in /tmp and run that.
    With that i get:
    (crashreporter:23793): Gtk-CRITICAL **: gtk_widget_set_sensitive: assertion `GTK_IS_WIDGET (widget)' failed
And the crashreporter window pops up.
So i downgraded gtk2, too. Still the same.
And now, i'm stuck and don't know, where to look further.
All packages are up to date (except the ones i downgraded). I can't surely say, that it's caused by an update, since my computer was running for some days with firefox allways open and i update my system at least once a day. I noticed this just because of the latest kernel update, for which i rebooted the computer.
So does anyone have an idea, where i should look into next?

    just for the record:
after running firefox through gdb i figured out, the segfault was caused by /usr/lib/libz.so.1
After reinstalling zlib, everythings working fine again. But i have no idea, what has damaged zlib.

  • [SOLVED] libreoffice "loading document after login takes 30+ sec"

I have an arch install running xfce and lxdm as my login manager I have installed libreoffice per wiki instructions and configured memory optimizations as follows:
    Under Memory:
      - Reduced the number of Undo steps 20 steps.
      - Under Graphics cache, I set Use for LibreOffice to 128 MB.
      - I Set Memory per object to 20MB.
      - I Checked LibreOffice Quickstarter.
However, It still takes about 45 seconds to load any document, spreadsheet, or presentation after logging in. However when I load a second or third... document, spreadsheet, or presentation they load near instantly. Furthermore, if I open a terminal and type "libreoffice --writer /path/to/doc," I receive no errors or any verbose message. Has anyone encountered this? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Ok, I have solved libreoffice's unacceptable behavior on my machine by:
    appending "/etc/hosts" with the following:
    127.0.0.1 $HOSTNAME localhost $HOSTNAME.(none)
    with $HOSTNAME actually spelled out
    ex "127.0.0.1 archden localhost archden.(none)"
With this miracle cure your libreoffice installation will fall within an acceptable standard of behavior.
PS. praying libreoffice is far more glorious in this respect.

  • [SOLVED] banshee crashing on startup

Since today banshee is crashing for me at startup. The window frame get's visible for one short moment without any ui content ant then it crashes.
I can't remember doing any package updates right before the problem occured. Deleting all banshee configuration files didn't work (all banshee-1 directories). The error message told me to write "add-auto-load-safe-path /usr/bin/mono-sgen-gdb.py" into ~/.gdbinit which reduced the amount of error messages but didn't solve the problem.
I also tried reinstalling banshee and mono without any success in resolving the problem.
I'm not very good in interpreting debugger messages, so maybe someone has some suggestions on what to try or has experienced the same problem and solved it.
The first output is before creating ~/.gdbinit, the second one afterwards:

'downgrade' tells you that you have the package you're looking for in the cache and you can install it by picking just the number e.g.
    $ downgrade linux
The following packages are available in your cache:
    1) local linux-3.11.1-1-i686.pkg.tar.xz [installed]
    2) local linux-3.11-1-i686.pkg.tar.xz
    3) local linux-3.10.10-1-i686.pkg.tar.xz
    please choose a version, [s]earch A.R.M or [q]uit: q
You can use '-n' switch to tell 'downgrade' not look in cache and go directly to A.R.M.

  • [Solved] Libreoffice 3.6.1.4 don't start

    Hello,
    please excuse my bad english.
I have a problem. Since the libreoffice update from 3.5.6 to 3.6.1.4 libreoffice don't start. For a short time i see the splash-screen and that's it. In the terminal, when i type soffice or lowriter or libreoffice --writer i can't see any message. Also i deleted the ~/.config/libreoffice folder. But that doesn't help. These packages are installed: libreoffice-common libreoffice-gnome libreoffice-de libreoffice-writer libreoffice-calc. When i downgrade to 3.5.6 everything is fine.
I have a laptop with openbox and a desktop-pc with gnome. Same problem on both systems.
Do you have any tip for me?
    Thanks Michael

Experiencing the same problem here though I found out that the reason for LibreOffice to crash/segfault is the existence of a aquabase-language-support.ttf file which as far as I remember was perfectly accepted in previous versions.
Once I remove it from my .fonts folder LibreOffice loads as it should (no deep testing performed though).
Therefore, in case you are using a .fonts folder on my behalf I would suggest to check out its content (back it up and empty the folder and add the fonts again one by one checking each time if LibreOffice crashes or not until you find which of them may be the reason for the crash).

  • [SOLVED] kdeinit4 crashing on startup (and a few other new installat..

I have just switched from openSuSE to ArchLinux, and needless to say, am a bit disappointed as to why I didn't make the switch before. ArchLinux is just pure awesome and everything seems to be working fine after a mile of manual readings and tweaking around configuration files. There are just a few issues I'm facing:
    1. kdeinit4 crashes on startup: I get a KCrash dialog which says that it has crashed. The title says 'The KDE Daemon has crashed'. This is the backtrace I was able to generate from that: http://pastebin.com/L7C9iwPY
    2. KDE does not store any session data: I don't like those pesky launchers on my plasma panel (the one with the taskbar and all), so I removed them. But after the reboot, they reappear. I have to remove them every session. With yakuake, I have to change the height and width of the console at every reboot, as it just switched back to the default values at every session start. Some settings do seem to persist though, for example, I have my plasma panel set at the top screen edge. This stays the same for every reboot. I have a feeling this problem has something to do with the KDE daemon crashing.
    3. Nepomuk keeps on crashing: I keep on getting this notification error on startup: http://imgur.com/PyGpQ
Other than this, everything seems to work with my laptop.
    Information about my laptop
    Model: Dell Studio 1555
KDE version: KDE 4.7.00 (from repository)
    Output of `uname -a`: Linux meanmachine 3.0-ARCH #1 SMP PREEMPT Wed Aug 17 21:55:57 CEST 2011 x86_64 Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo CPU P8600 @ 2.40GHz GenuineIntel GNU/Linux
Last edited by rohanprabhu (2011-09-04 10:25:43)

Also, for now to solve the problem, I am making kdeinit not play any notification sounds. Since phonon-vlc is crashing KDE applications (from a look around the web, it is not only kdeinit that is crashing due to the phonon-vlc bug), this must be when it tries to play some media, which obviously is the startup notifications.
Go to System Settings > Application and System Notifications > Player Settings and select 'No Audio Output'. Works for me.
Or one can just switch to phonon-gstreamer, but in that case banshee and rhythmbox crash for no reason while trying to play media.
Now KDE is storing session data [was a huge problem since I could not use custom power management profiles.. pretty difficult with a laptop], but Nepomuk is still crashing. Not really buying the whole semantic desktop thing.. so just going to live with it till an update resolves it

  • [SOLVED]Arch hangs on startup, unable to find root device Mac

For posterity, I'm editing the post with how I solved both issues.
    Hi All,
I'm trying to dual boot Arch and Mac 10.4.11 on an old 32 bit MacbookPro1,1. I did the following:
    1) Partitioned Drive with an EFI partition, Mac partition, root partition, home partition, and swap partition
    2) Installed Mac to its respective partition
    3) Installed rEFInd to the ESP
    4) Confirmed the rEFInd was able to boot Mac
    5) Installed Arch to the root partition and mounted the separate /home and swap partitions
    6) Followed the beginners guide for the rest of the installation
    7) Did NOT install a bootloader
    - I am just using rEFInd to boot Arch; I installed Ubuntu in a similar fashion on my other (2013) MBP. I didn't create a mount point for /boot, did not install GRUB, and it works perfectly
    8) Rebooted. Selected the Arch installation from the rEFInd menu, it launched, and shortly after I am presented with this message:
ERROR: device 'UUID=142bf...777' not found. Skipping fsck.
ERROR: Unable to find root device 'UUID=142bf...777'.
You are being dropped to a recovery shell
Type 'exit' to try and continue booting
sh: can't access tty: job control turned off
    [rootfs /]#
I then booted to the live cd to try and do some noob detective work:
    # mkdir /mnt/arch
    # mount /dev/sda3 /mnt/arch
    # cat /mnt/arch/etc/fstab
    # cat /mnt/arch/etc/mkinitcpio.conf # my searching suggested the HOOKS might be the issue
HOOKS="base udev autodetect modconf block filestystems keyboard fsck"
Here is the output of /etc/fstab
I am including the outputs of
    # lsblk
    # fdisk -l /dev/sda
    # blkid
    as a photo.
    EDIT:
I was able to use rEFInd's line editor to boot with the fallback image. Everything went well for the first five seconds and I got past the previously mentioned failure. However, it is now stuck at
[ OK ] Started Rebuild Hardware Database
I booted again, and it froze at:
[ OK ] Started udev Kernel Device Manager.
I did this a few more times and it froze at:
[ OK ] Reached Target Swap.
[ OK ] Reached Target Sound Card.
    and
[ OK ] Started Flush Journal to Persistent Storage.
Why is it freezing at different points each time I boot (with fallback)?
    EDIT 2 [HALF SOLVED]:
By switching the order of the hooks ( I still have no idea what they do) as per this link, I am now able to boot in normal (not fallback) mode. For the record, here is what I did:
    # mkdir /mnt/arch
    # mount /dev/sda3 /mnt/arch
    # chroot /mnt/arch/ /bin/bash/
    # nano /etc/mkinitcpio.conf # here I put block before autodetect in the hooks line (Why isn't this the default if it prevents the system from booting?)
    # mount -t proc proc /proc
    # mount -t sysfs sys /sys
    # mount -t devtmpfs udev /dev
    # mkinitcpio -p linux
I then rebooted and it started up, except now it is freezing at various points in the startup sequence like the fallback image did above. What could be causing this issue?
    EDIT 3 [SOLVED]
I don't know why this worked, but after following this advice I am now able to boot into login. Steps:
    1) Select Arch in the rEFInd menu and press F2
    2) Press F2 again to edit the boot parameters
    3) Scan to the end of the line and add
    nomodeset
    after the linux image.

Yes, the UUID displayed in the error message upon bootup is the same as the UUID for /dev/sda3 as found when running blkid which is the same as the UUID for the root partition in /etc/fstab.

  • [SOLVED] libreoffice update "failed to read path from javaldx"

I don't have java installed as I do not use it (aside from whatever is built into chromium I guess). Libreoffice started up fine before the update. I had the option checked to not use java in the gui. Now it won't load at all. Is java-runtime now a hard dependency of libreoffice-common package? Is there any way to disable it? My ~/.config/libreoffice/4/user/config/javasettings_Linux_X86_64.xml looks like this:
    <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
<!--This is a generated file. Do not alter this file!-->
    <java xmlns="http://openoffice.org/2004/java/framework/1.0" xmlns:xsi="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance">
    <enabled xsi:nil="false">false</enabled>
    <userClassPath xsi:nil="true"/>
    <vmParameters xsi:nil="true"/>
    <jreLocations xsi:nil="true"/>
    <javaInfo xsi:nil="true"/>
    </java>
I am looking into other files included with "pacman -Ql libreoffice-common" but can't seem to figure it out yet.
Edit: Also I have tried "# chown -vR dodo3773:users ~/.config" per the LibreOffice wiki entry. No pacnew files or anything in /etc either.

  • [SOLVED] Libreoffice Impress - Horizontal Scroll Broken

So Libreoffice Impress on my setup, even before the big upgrade to 3.4.2, has had this issue where the slide viewer portion of the window actually overlaps the horizontal scroll bar and buttons, which makes them unusable.  I don't know if this is an issue with my DE or if it's an upstream problem, but it's ugly and frustrating when trying to work on something big like a poster.  Right now, the issue shows up with KDE 4.7, I can't remember if I tried this with GNOME 3.
Here's a picture of the problem:
    http://postimage.org/image/31eqjbb50/
    Suggestions are appreciated.
    Last edited by Deemoney14 (2011-08-07 15:31:20)

I had this too and solved it (search on this forum after reading this).
It Is caused by native libreoffice.org QT4 integration, which is flaky.
Install and use the gnome integration package libreoffice-gnome.
Not sure if you also need libreoffice-kde4 (for the kde4 file dialogs)
I just installed both of these packages.
And add this line to your /usr/bin/soffice
    export OOO_FORCE_DESKTOP=gnome soffice
This forces libreoffice to always use above settings.
But the file /usr/bin/soffice will be written over when you update the packages.
So perhaps it is better to add the export to your bashrc or something.
Good luck and let us know if this works
    John
PS In kde 4.7 there is a much improved kde4 compatibility mode for gtk apps under kde4.
This will give you visually better results than the native soffice QT4 integration anyhow.
PPS How is kde4.7 working anyway? I am hesitant to "upgrade" from a .5 point release to a .0 point release.
    Is it stable?

  • I3-wm segfaults at startup

I have "exec i3" (have also tried "exec i3 -V >> ~/.config/i3/i3log 2>&1" but it makes no difference) in my .xinitrc file. Starting X with startx fails and exits with nothing useful in stout or xorg log file. Running i3 by itself produces the following:
    mkdir(): Permission denied
07/02/2013 08:23:18 PM - ERROR: Could not initialize errorlog
zsh: segmentation fault (core dumped) i3
I initially thought my permissions with i3 were screwed up, but they seem to be fine.
    ~]$ ls -la `which i3`
    -rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 343567 Mar 19 05:15 /usr/bin/i3*
    checking dmesg, I see
    i3[19582]: segfault at 0 ip b72440ba sp bfda04e0 error 4 in libc-2.17.so[b7145000+1a8000]
which appears to be just some gibberish that gets spit out when the actual error message is too long. Xorg runs fine by itself by the way. What am i missing here?

You're missing what we are missing: all those error messages that you've concluded are not useful.
The one you do show is not gibberish, but is already indiciative of a problem.  However, without seeing the others, it would only be a guess.  So show the actual error output.
I have a few potential suspicions which could be narrowed down by seeing output.  First, the permission error need not be from the i3 binary, but is likely from one of the config files that it reads at startup.  Also, the libc error makes me wonder if you are fully up to date - have you ran a `pacman -Syu` recently? (as in today).

I even tried xmodmap to no avail:
    keycode 165 = XF86AudioPrev
    keycode 164 = XF86AudioPlay
    keycode 163 = XF86AudioNext
What gives?  The other xbindkeys work well.  What is causing the ncmpcpp segfault or how do I go about finding out more info?

Wow I feel dumb.  Seems like ncmpcpp changed quite a bit since I last used it (around last Sept!?). Looks like we use mpc instead, example "mpc next" "mpc prev" "mpc toggle".  Marking as solved.

  • [SOLVED] VLC Segfault upon sort

    Hi all,
Okay, so some time ago I upgraded from VLC 1.0.1-2 to 1.0.2-1, and I had a segmentation fault upon sorting my playlist.
I googled, and I found a bug report on the videolan forums. However, it stated the problem was solved with the new version.
Now with version 1.0.2-5 I'm still having the same problem. I'm pretty sure the bug got fixed, so something else must be causing the segfault.
Is there anyone with the same or similar problem or a fix?
    Thanks in advance,
    Tom
Edit: Nevermind, it finally got solved in version 1.0.3-1.

David Batson, ffmpeg-compat is an old version of ffmpeg. Since the current package is (or atleast should be) using ffmpeg 0.10.8, ffmpeg 2.0 has nothing to do with this.
Edit: no good with either the 2.0.8 rebuild or with 2.0.8a. ldd libavcodec_plugin.so tells me that it can't find libavcodec.so.53 and libavutil.so.51, so the linker isn't finding the ffmpeg-compat libs.
Edit2: OK, got it. I'll file a bug report, but for anyone wanting to fix this now, edit /etc/ld.so.conf.d/ffmpeg-compat.conf and change the '\n' to an actual newline, then run 'sudo ldconfig'
    Edit3: bug report: https://bugs.archlinux.org/task/36375
Edit4 (how many can I make ): After fixing the linker issue, 2.0.8 (both from the repos and my rebuild) is segfaulting, but 2.0.8a is not. I marked vlc out of date, hopefully it will be updated soon.
