[SOLVED] Proxy settings don't work
Hi there
I hope I don't bother you with a topic that already came up that way.
While I was installing Arch Linux I had to use the proxy of our company, which worked for me.
After the installation I noticed that I had to reenter the command "export http_proxy='url_to_proxy'" again and again, but for pacman, it was working.
Not so for firefox, and after trying and working on it it doesn't work anywhere now.
Any idea?
With the command "export | grep -i http" I get the following lines:
declare -x ftp_proxy=url_to_proxy
declare -x http_proxy=url_to_proxy
I also put this into /etc/environment, which didn't help.
Hope you can help me.
Greetings
Kielo
EDIT//
I figured it out now..
1.) Write into /etc/profiles tthe following lines:
export HTTP_PROXY=url_to_proxy:port
export HTTPS_PROXY=url_to_proxy:port
export FTP_PROXY=url_to_proxy:port
2.) Go to System > Preferences > Network Proxy > "Manual Proxy Configuration"; Then (for me) check "Use the same proxy for all protocols"

My screen display settings don't work right
My screen display settings don't work. When i try to set to not sleep it still sleeps. When i set to sleep and show pictures it works for a few mins then sleeps and won't scroll my pics at all just a black screen. Why? Does anyone else have this problem?
Screensaver (e.g., showing pictures instead of the desktop) and Display Sleep and Computer Sleep are all set independently. You need to be sure that you have set each and every one of these correctly or you will get unexpected results.
There is also the ability to require a password after an interval, and that is also independent of all the others, and is in
system preferences > security. -
Does the creative cloud use different proxy settings as my works internet security (NHS) is potentially blocking connections?
Can only update apps through my home internet connection.
Any advice would be helpful.Quick update. Added to a previously filed bug. Looks like it's assigned now so maybe we'll see a fix for this soon.

Removing firefox proxy settings does not work until a restart?
When I transfer from my work network (with a proxy server) to my home network (no server), I have to restart the browser before it realizes that there is no proxy server that it has to authenticate with. Until I do this, (re)loading pages gives me an error.
However, when going the other way, it smoothly recognises that there is a server, and no restart is required to continue browsing
I have automatic proxy settings enabled. I have tried selecting 'no proxy server', but I still need to restart firefox for this to work. Please update to the current Firefox 22.0 release.

i tried disabling windows firewall, and tried to add firefox in firewall also, but none of these works.
You can try to set '''Auto-detect proxy settings for this network''' in '''Tools''' ('''Alt''' + '''T''') > '''Options''' > '''Advanced''' > '''Network''' > '''Settings'''. If it's still not working you may have to contact the network provider.

Your new email settings don't work...
I recently received an email from Verizon directing me to a website to update my email server settings. I'm 99% sure this was a genuine Verizon email so I tried their suggestions to change my POP3 and Outgoing server names and port numbers. The new settings DO NOT work - either outgoing or incoming. So I set them back the way they were.
What's up with that??If you were trying to activate SSL on the 1/5-1/6 then the problem was with some Verizon servers.
It should work again now.
The reason for using SSL is that your mail is then sent/received encrypted. Without SSL its all in the clear between you and Verizon's servers. Its particularly important to use SSL if you are not always using your home connections, e.g. from Laptops and other portable devices.
Only difference in the settings should be the port numbers and the SSL setting.
Various people have mentioned running into problems and solved them by.
Reviewing and correcting mistakes in their settings
Closing and reopening their Mail program.
For certain devices, restarting their devices
Checking their firewall settings
Increasing the timeout value in their mail program
One known problem introduced by using SSL is that many SPAM detectors no longer work. At least one that works requires that you leave the mail settings in your mail program alone, but then configure the change instead into the anti-SPAM program. I.e, it with communicate with SSL but the mail program within your machine receives in the clear. -
Outlook Express 12-28-11 Email Changes to Settings don't work
Verizon Email of 12/28/11 told us to make changes to Portal settings of Outlook Express
The intro tells us how much they want to "enhance our online experience". Then at the bottom, they tell us to not respond to the email. Why don't they have a return email when people start having problems? Probably because they would be swamped with complaints.
Worked on this o ver two hours yesterday on my 4 email accounts on 3 computers
As usual, the Verizon instructions are wrong at http://verizon.com/emailsettings
They must never test this stuff before they publish it
Per the above instructions, I changed the Outgoing Portal to 465 and checked the SSL box for that portal
Set the Incoming Portal to 995 from the existing 110 and checked that SSL box
Outlook express would time out waiting for Verizon to connect for outgoing messages
I had changed the Outgoing Portal to 587 per Verizon instructions in 2009 (I document everything and keep it!)
So, I reset that with the Outgoing SSL still checked: still timed out
Unchecked the Outgoing SSL and everything worked
The settings that are working now:
Outgoing Portal 587 with SSL unchecked
Incomong Portal 995 with SSL checkedI agree - so much of what Verizon does, doesn't work. Their instructions for Windows Vista, Windows Mail say:
Setting up and updating your Verizon Online email with Vista™ Windows Mail Setting up
Open Mail.
From the Tools menu, select Accounts.
Select Add.
Select Email Acount and then click Next.
Enter the name to be displayed on outgoing messages and then click Next.
Enter your email address, and then click Next.
Type incoming.verizon.net in the Incoming mail (POP3)field.
The Incoming Server (POP3) should be set to 995.
For Incoming mail (POP3), check the box that says “This server requires a secure connection (SSL)”.
Type outgoing.verizon.net in the Outgoing mail (SMTP) field.
The Outgoing Server (SMTP) should be set to 465.
For Outgoing mail (SMTP), check the box that says “This server requires a secure connection (SSL)”.
Click Next.
In the User namefield, type your Verizon Online user name.
In the Passwordfield, type your password.
Check the Remember passwordcheckbox. (If you do not check this box, you'll be prompted for the password when you access your mailbox.)
Click Next and then click Finish to close the window.
However, when you get to the "setup email servers" page at step 7 there is no check box forselecting an SSL connection for either Incoming Mail or Outgoing mail. Aside from the POP3 dropdown and the 2 address boxes, there is only a 4th box where you can check "Outgoing server requires authentication". Whazzup? What Windows Mail setup are they looking at?
Given the problems people are having, I guess the best thing is to ignore the Verizon email warning and when it fails, just switch to Comcast. -
Bypassing proxy settings does not work
I can't manage to get my Mac to bypass the proxy settings. My bypass settings are:
*.local, 169.254.0.0/16, localhost, 193.230/16, 192.168.0.0/24, 172.16.6.0/24
With these settings if I try to access 172.16.6.120, the server does not respond.
However if my settings look like this:
*.local, 169.254.0.0/16, localhost, 193.230/16, 192.168.0.0/24, 172.16.6.0/24, 192.168.0.252, 172.16.6.120, 172.16.6.130
I can access that IP address with no problems.
I also tried: *.local, 169.254.0.0/16, localhost, 193.230.0.0/16, 192.168.0.0/24, 172.16.6.0/24 and *.local, 169.254.0.0/16, localhost, 193.230/16, 192.168.0.0/24, 172.16.6.* with no success.

Playback Output settings don't work
Playback Output settings are not working properly with one particular user account on a shared Mac. FCP is not routing video and audio to the external monitor and speakers even though the correct playback settings are set in the A/V Devices tab of Audio/Video Settings. FCP routes video only to the Mac's screen and audio to the Mac's internal speaker.
With all other user accounts on the same Mac, with the same settings in the Audio/Video Settings, the playback works fine.
What am I doing wrong?Try all this:
#8 External Monitor Viewing.
Shane's Stock Answer #8:
A simple path is mac > firewire > camera or deck > rca cables > tv
Then start up your camera and tv, then open fcp.
Then go View > External video > all frames
Video playback should be Apple firewire NTSC (If you are using an NTSC set)
Audio playback should be Audio follows Video
Techinially, this should send synched video to your TV
If for some reason you can't view your timeline on your external monitor, there are a few things to try:
1) Make sure that the camera/deck is connected and powered on BEFORE you open FCP.
2) In the Final Cut Pro menu select AUDIO/VIDEO Preferences and make sure your signal is being sent out thru Firewire DV.
3) Go to the menu and select VIEW>EXTERNAL>ALL FRAMES.
4) Click in the % box above the image and select FIT TO WINDOW.
5) Go to VIEW->refresh A/V devices
6) Make sure the Log & Capture window is closed
If you want it to play in both the canvas and the external monitor you need to go to the FINAL CUT PRO menu and select AUDIO/VIDIO settings and make sure MIRROR ON DESKTOP is selected under the PLAYBACK OUTPUT section

Email settings don't work, can't receive or send email
No matter how many times I change my Outlook email settings for Verizon, the new settings have never worked. I used to be able to at least receive email, but for many months I have not been able to send email. I have called support and emailed Verizon and no one has been able to help.
So now as of 11/11/2013, I can't receive or send email and I have tried to change my settings to the new settings, and nothing works. I have gone to verizon.com/emailsettings for step by step instructions, all to no avail.
I also have comcast.net and my own website email in Outlook and now NONE of my email accounts work as of 11/11/2013. It appears Verizon is the key to my problems.
Any thoughts?Maryde wrote:

Verizon should have no impact on your ability to use Outlook with your comcast.com account. Verizon is only providing the pipe to Comcast, and I can get there there just fine. Something must have been changed in your Outlook setup for your Comcast account (which is separate from the settings for your Verizon account) or Comcast must have changed something that broke your Comcast settings.
If you provide your exact Outlook settings (inbound and outbound including servier names, ports, and SSL settings), perhaps someone can help.
Also, can you successfully use the Verizon webmail to access your mailbox? -
Windows Power Management settings don't work with ITunes
Purchased a refurbished Dell Optiplex system a few weeks ago with a 3.2 Ghz Pentium processor, 1 gigabyte of RAM, and 160 GB of hard drive - so a nice, new, fast system running Windows XP.
I set my Power Management settings to go to screen saver after 20 minutes, and power down after 45 minutes. It worked just fine for a month, and the day I downloaded Itunes onto this computer, those settings do not work.
I have reset them.
I have changed them (to as little as one minute).
I have changed them back to the original settings.
I have rebooted my computer.
I have run 2 different spyware programs (Spybot and Adaware) as well as run an anti-virus scan (TrendMicro Housecall).
Nothing has changed, and my only conclusion is that Itunes is somehow interfering with the power settings for my computer and monitor. This is rather frustrating, as I'd like my computer to shut off on its own if someone walks away (I can't trust my kids to log off on their own).
Any ideas on what the problem might be?Hi, I just bought my iPhone a couple of days ago and am having the same problems.
I have a Macbook at home, but need to be able to sync with my work computer for contacts and calendar. At work I'm running on Windows XP Pro SP 2 and MS Outlook 2003 SP 3. I've made sure to update all MS software. I'm running on iPhone 1.1.3 and iTunes 7.6.
My contacts sync fine, but, so far, no luck with my calendar. I've gone through the trouble of completely deleting everything off my calendar and am trying "test" appointments to no avail. What's really frustrating is that I've logged out of my ID on this computer and logged in using a test ID. I can successfully sync a test appointment following those steps.
Tech support tells me that since I'm successful under those conditions, it must be a corrupt entry on my main calendar. But, as I've mentioned, I deleted everything I can find off my main calendar and am still not able to get it to sync successfully.
This is quite frustrating. -
[Solved]Desktop-Terminals don't works
Hi
I use often desktop-terminals like gnome-terminal or konsole. Since friday no one works. if I start a desktop-terminal, the cursor appears, but I can't type anything and the prompt don't appears. I use the zsh with the configfiles from the grml-project(http://grml.org http://www.laber-land.de/2008/11/13/kur … att-bash/), but it don't work with the bash, too.
Last edited by linopolus (2009-02-04 12:48:20)Another idea: maybe they can't spawn their own pseudo-ttys? This would explain why you can log in after boot and run x and at the same time can't run terminal emulator. Is there some hint in your logs? A simple test also would be to log in console with x still running with some terminal emulator and issuing "w" command to see if somebody is logged-in on some "pts/0" or something terminal. If it's not then we have our suspect. If it is—maybe then it's authorization problem.

Udevadm info starts with the device specified by the devpath and then
walks up the chain of parent devices. It prints for every device
found, all possible attributes in the udev rules key format.
A rule to match, can be composed by the attributes of the device
and the attributes from one single parent device.

Proxy settings seem to work for some apps
I am using a company-provided proxy.pac file that enables Safari to work, but Mail, Entourage, and My.Mac don't make connections. Is there an issue with the pac file or the network settings within my computer? I read the postings, and it seems that there is no real trend, e.g., some complain about Safari not working while Mail does (opposite of my issue). Any help would be appreciated.
