[solved] netcfg fails with no apparent reason

So, I'm trying to set up a very simple profile with netcfg:
CONNECTION='ethernet'
DESCRIPTION='ok'
INTERFACE='eth0'
IP='dhcp'
Here's what happens when I try to bring it up:
DEBUG: Loading profile eth0-dhcp
DEBUG: Configuring interface eth0
:: eth0-dhcp up
DEBUG: status reported to profile_up as:
DEBUG: Loading profile eth0-dhcp
DEBUG: Configuring interface eth0
DEBUG: ethernet_iproute_up ifup
> No connection
DEBUG: profile_up connect failed
[FAIL]
If I just do
sudo ifconfig eth0 up
sudo dhcpcd eth0
, the network works fine.
So, what might be the root of my problems with netcfg?

How long does it take for the interface to come up when you do it manually?
Looking at what looks like the relevant lines of code (30-40) it could be a timeout issue, though not necessarily. You could manually try the commands issued in the scripts at that time.
Just thinking aloud as, if it is a bug, then any info will be useful and netcfg is/has just getting a new maintainer, I think.

  • BI Server Fails for No Apparent Reason

    Hi,
I have a problem I cannot explain in that our BI Server continually fails for no apparent reason.
We have OBIEE+ installed on Windows Server 2003 together with Oracle 10g. The OTM Advanced Analytics repository &.catalog has been installed with the OTM (Full HDOWNER /limited GLOGOWNER) database under pinning it (without a full OTM installation) because there is a need for an FTI environment for users to 'play' with but infratructure limitations prevent a full-blown OTM installation. The setup is unorthodox but the environment does work except for this issue.
The BI Server fails on a regular basis. I cannot find any reports in the NQSServer Log (or any other log I can think of) that points to the cause or indeed that it has actually gone down - the only clue that it has failed is the startup entry resulting from the restart of the service.
To minimise impact I have written a cmd file task that is invoked whenever the BI Server goes down - this shuts down the Presentation Server and Java Host services and then starts all the tasks in the required sequence. The resultant log from this task shows that the BI server goes down every 30 minutes. Obviously something is triggered every half-hour. So I have trawled through the various config files for a clue of what this could be but I can't find anything obvious.
In the repository Administrator, I have suspended all initiallisation blocks of repository variables except for those that are required and the refresh of those remaining is limited to 0600hrs daily so these should not contribute to this issue.
I would be grateful for any suggestions.

    Hi John,
We are running the environment on a VM server with Windows Server 2003 installed with 2GB ram and 50GB disk space. Beyond that, I'm not sure what memory measurement your asking for. Currently the server is running at 1.39 GB memory usage with NQSSever currently using 50MB of that. So it still has 0.6GB of memory it can call on if needed. When I open up a dashboard from a remote workstation, the memory usage inceases to about 55MB.
I have already gone through the NQSConfig.ini file and increased space allocations, for example MAX_CACHE_ENTRY_SIZE = 10 MB (Increased from 1MB) but these changes had no effect.
Exactly which memory measurement are you after?
    Thanks in advance.

  • My Early 2008 iMac freeze with no apparent reason

I have an Early 2008 iMac (2.66GHz Core 2 Duo with 4GB RAM).
Since installing Lion, sometimes the computer freezes without apparent reason.
The only thing I'm sure is that this is NOT the same as the Quicktime video problem – I wasn't watching a Quicktime video, nor a Flash website when it froze. Actually, today happened while I wasnt' doing anything: the computer was on, but I was at launch.
Anyway, what happens is really strange: the screen freeze, I can't do things like change volume, but the mouse still works – albeit without producing results on screen such as dock magnification etc. Also, while the computer was frozen a Time Machine backup occured as scheduled, and I was able to stream my computer's music to my iPhone using the Home Sharing feature.
The clock also remain frozen (at 12:51), so I looked at the logs and this is what I found:

At this point I restarted the computer using the power button.
For the record, a few months ago I replaced the hard drive thinking it could be the problem – good thing I needed more space anyway because it happened twice AFTER I replaced it.
    Any help?

Welcome to Lion, I have 10.7.4 and this has been a problem every two weeks or so since 10.7.1. Fun.

I don't know if I borked something during the package upgrades -- there were those couple announced ones that required minor manual intervention.  Any ideas?

  • [solved] Plymouth fails with GDM

I am using plymouth-legacy from the AUR.
When I boot, the plymouth password prompt for my encrypted root partition comes up and I can enter the password.  The next screen is the boot splash screen with the "spinfinity" spinning wheel.  The screen flickers a few times but never goes away.  Pressing escape shows the console that states the plymouth-quit-wait service failed.  I can get to tty2 by pressing [Alt][F2] and login there.  I think the plymouth-quit-wait service is actually working fine, but the problem is either gdm is failing or plymouth-quit is not running and plymouth-quit-wait times out waiting for something to happen.  I am not really sure what the problem could be because it looks like (from the log below) that gdm has a problem with my graphics card, but it has no problem if plymouth isn't running.
Log snippet for plymouth-quit-wait service.  (Full log pastebin below).

    Things I have tried:
Switch to tty2, log in and restart services as below in that order.  This brings up gdm, and I can log in without any issue.
    sudo systemctl start plymouth-quit
    sudo systemctl restart plymouth-quit-wait
    sudo systemctl restart gdm-plymouth
Use SLIM as a display manager.  This works for some reason, but I don't want to use slim.  (Off topic, but I use more than one desktop manager and slim doesn't do a great job with remembering my last session.)
Don't use a display manager.  Plymouth boots fine to a console.  There are no errors.  I can then start gdm with no problem.
    sudo systemctl start gdm
Using lightdm has the same result as gdm.
Using the gdm.service instead of gdm-plymouth.service has the same result.
I tried this thread.  I don't have an nvidia card and the modified gdm-plymouth service didn't change anything.
I also followed this thread on the fedora forums, which advised moving /var/journal to /var/journal.org.  That seems pretty bizarre but I tried it anyways.  No effect for me.

Doesn't matter if you don't use it, the package includes parts for GDM.  Some testing for KDM or other login managers would be a good thing to do too.
I am aware of that. I don't have other  login mangers installed but something changed between the two updates. As I said, I'll look into it. I know SLiM and LightDM work with this build. Let you know something soon.

  • [solved] netcfg fails only on reconnect

    Hi there,
I am running system.d and I am able to start netcfg once. Netcfg reconnect fails, as well as attempting to connect a second time when e.g. network was not available on first attempt. Normally I start netcfg on boot, and if it fails I am not able to try a connection manually. Basically it means I have only one try to connect to a wireless network before reboot.
I first thought it might be related to https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=151662 but I could not help myself.
Here is the output when netcfg is disabled in systemd.

Ok, finaly I got it working - first time with systemd. Things I changed:
    1. in wpa_supplicant.conf I updated from '/var/run' to '/run' and added 'fast_reauth=1' and 'ap_scan=1'
    2. in my networkprofile I added 'TIMEOUT=10' and 'DHCP_TIMEOUT=20'
    3. finally I enabled dhcpcd: I think this one actually did it. It was never was in the array of rc.conf though

  • IPod updates a lot of songs with no apparent reason

Since today I've noticed that every time I plug my 5g 30GB iPod in, iTunes updates about 5GB of songs with no reason. I didn't touch the songs in the meantime.
I found somebody else with the same problem in the forums, but with no solution.
I don't use manual syncing, because I use a smart playlist to fill up my ipod and want my ratings and play count synched automatically also.
I didn't have this problem before.
Thank you in advance for any help, maybe it's a bug that Apple will soon fix.
    (I use the latest soft/firmware)
    Mac OS X (10.4.9)

I have had this problem many times too. The way to fix it is to delete the bad entry from ur itunes library, (not the actual file, just the itunes entry) then sync ur ipod. This will get the bad song off of the ipod. Disconnect the ipod. Re-add the song to ur library. Then re-sync ur ipod to rewrite the song to the ipod. Sometimes files get written badly to ipod. This is the way to correct the issue.

  • [Solved] Intermittent freezing with no apparent errors in the logs

The freezing occurs without warning, and affects the whole user interface. After a few minutes, it will unfreeze for a few seconds, then freeze again. This repeats ad nauseam. The most recent time this happened, I had quite a few  applications open and I decided to close them one by one during the unfreezes to see if any one of them was the culprit, but nothing was apparent.
Checking my logs reveals nothing. Here's the relevant time slot from my everything.log:

As you can see, my sysreq keys work fine even during the freeze. I've also noticed that any audio that I am playing when the system freezes continues to play normally. I'm on a 32 bit install running gnome-shell with the proprietary nvidia drivers. The freeze started when I opened a webpage with a flash video on it. I thought that flash might be the problem, but I don't think so now since 1) it wasn't the first flash video I've viewed and 2) killing the browser didn't fix the freezing problem.

  • [SOLVED] Boot fails with "ata4: SRST failed (errno = -16)"

I have desktop that has four disks. They have similar three partitions sitting on RAID.
/boot and swap are on RAID1
    / is on RAID5.
This worked well until a couple of weeks ago I noticed I couldn't connect to it via SSH. I went onsite and the desktop was humming but I couldn't get picture on the screen and alt + sysrq + REISUB did nothing. I shut it down by pressing power button and started it again. It gave me following errors:
    ata4: SRST failed (errno = -16)
    After a while there was
    reset failed, give up
I restarted the machine and went to BIOS. There was only two of four disks visible. I shut the computer down, removed the power cord and then plugged it back in. This time BIOS showed all the disks there. I tried to boot up Arch and got the following.
    Booting the kernel.
    running early hook [udev]
    running hook [udev]
    Triggering uevents
mounting '/dev/md3' on real root # md3 is the RAID 5 device containing root
mount: you must specify the filesystem type
You are now being dropped into an emergency shell.
sh: can't access tty; job control turned off
After that I tried to chroot from USB installation disk. First I check the RAID devices and see that in md1 (/boot) all seems to be ok. In md2 (swap) half of the partitions are missing. I'm not sure how to interpret the last one.
    cat /proc/mdstat
    Personalities : [raid1]
    md1: active raid1 sdd1[3] sdb1[1] sda1[0] sdc1[2]
    1048564 block super 1.0 [4/4] [UUUU]
    md2: active raid1 sdb2[1] sda2[0]
    2096116 block super 1.2 [4/2] [UU__]
    md3: inactive sdb3[1](S) sda3[0](S) sdd3[4](S) sdc3[2](S)
    608169984 block super 1.2
    unused devices: <none>
I remove those devices and try to recreate them. md1 says it starts with four drives. md2 starts with 2 driver out of 4. And then the last one.
    mdadm --assemble /dev/md3 /dev/sd[a-d]3
mdadm: /dev/md3 assembled from 2 drives - not enough to start the array.
Has anyone any idea where did the two partitions go? I ran SMART-tests to all four drives in long mode and all of them passed the tests.
I use GPT partitioning table, UEFI and Syslinux if it matters.

I just booted to chroot environment and checked that all the partitions show up all right. Below is output of one disk and all the four disks give similar info.
    gdisk -l /dev/sdd
    GPT fdisk (gdisk) version 0.8.6

  • [SOLVED]eCryptfs fails with mount: mount(2) failed: No such file or d

Since some weeks back I cant seem to mount my eCryptfs stuff.
Usually I just mounted my lvmdrive and did a:
    sudo mount /dev/sda1 /media/Olddrive;sudo ecryptfs-recover-private /media/Olddrive/home/.ecryptfs/user/.Private;sudo ecryptfs-recover-private /run/media/user/lvmdriveid/.ecryptfs/user/.Private
Hit y,y [password] repeat and there it was, truly bob was my uncle.
However, These days I get a:
Inserted auth tok with sig [key] into the user session keyring
mount: mount(2) failed: No such file or directory
    What have changed?
*disclaimer: I might not be supersure about the exact " /media/Olddrive/home/.ecryptfs/user/.Private " as I fiddled a bit with it before I rebooted earlier today after a -Suy.

Forgot to update, in any case I managed to access my data through the old manual way.
    cd /run/media/user/harddrive/.ecryptfs/user/.encryptfs
    sudo ecryptfs-unwrap-passphrase ./wrapped-passphrase
    sudo ecryptfs-add-passphrase --fnek
Inserted auth tok with sig [aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa] into the user session keyring
Inserted auth tok with sig [bbbbbbbbbbbbbbbb] into the user session keyring
    sudo mount -t ecryptfs /run/media/user/harddrive/home/.ecryptfs/user/.Private /media/mountdir
    Used default settings execpt for:
    Enable filename encryption (y/n) [n]: y
and of course inserted [bbbbbbbbbbbbbbbb] when asked:
Filename Encryption Key (FNEK) Signature [aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa]: bbbbbbbbbbbbbbbb

  • T520 hangs with no apparent reason

    Hi all,
My T520 (424049U) which is i5-2520M 4GB RAM 500GB HDD is causing me some trouble,
It has been to many times now that it just hangs: the HDD light is constantly on, not blinking, as if its scanning my whole HDD.
This cause the laptop to stuck completely - no reaction at all- even the mouse is stuck. And it happens in all kind of scenarios- like:
in the "welcome" screen just before windows is up, in the middle of internet browsing, in the middle of code writing in eclipse and even in the middle of browsing through "my computer".
I thought it might be because of the auto defrag which from some reason was on by default, so I turned it off but with no help, it wasn't the problem.
My T520 is not even a year old, and I work with it as I got it - with factory installations (OS, and everything) and I have about 100 processes working in the ideal state. I think it's a lot but every time I try do minimize that process list I'm discouraged because even reading about a process in the web doesn't make me sure if I can rid of it or not.
Do you think my ideal ~100 processes is the problem ? If not, what can cause the system to stuck so severely as I described ?
    Any suggestion will be welcome,
    thank you for your comments

  • WebAPP backup failing continuously, no apparent reason, backup (not really) in process

I am trying to make a manual backup of one of my WebAPPS with a SQL db attached, it has been woking properly until now,

and there is no other backup being in progress,
true that I have try several times, so I presume there is a ghost-copy-database somewhere were I can't see (and delete) or any other semaphore active
as my subscription do not have technical support (only billing support) I presume here is the only place where I cna raise this alert,

  • [SOLVED]Hibernation fails with "systemd hibernate"

Hibernation does not work on my laptop. After issuing the "systemd hibernate" laptop goes black, but after 10 seconds it wakes up again, with my lid light still blinking.
I'm receiving "cannot find swap device" and "cannot get swap writer" message
    # systemctl hibernate
A dependency job for hibernate.target failed. See 'journalctl -xn' for details.

Ok, I set that thing up.
    First try running
    #swapon -s
    Filename Type Size Used Priority
    /dev/sda4 partition 2091004 103532 -1
If you don't see any output, then you need to make/activate your swap partition. For that purpose use any partition tool like fdisk/cfdisk. Read more here
Then you need to check if your mkinitcpio.conf, grub, fstab have the necessary lines for your swap image file to be read at boot.
Add this line to /etc/fstab file, so that swap is mounted by the system:
    # /dev/sda4
    UUID=YOUR_DISK_UUID_NUMBER none swap defaults 0 0
to find the uuid of your swap partition do blkid /dev/sdaX, X -- is the number of your swap partition.
Go to /etc/mkinitcpio.conf and add "resume" to HOOKS array like this:
HOOKS="base udev autodetect pata scsi sata filesystems usbinput fsck resume"
Go to /etc/default/grub and add this line "resume=/dev/sdaX" like this:
    GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX="resume=/dev/sda4"
After that run the following commands to update your grub setup and rebuild the ramdisk image.
    # grub-mkconfig -o /boot/grub/grub.cfg
    # mkinitcpio -p linux
Go and try "systemctl hibernate", all should work now.

  • IPad 1 pre-installed applications shutting down just seconds after loading with no apparent reason

I've been using a second-hand iPad 1 running the highest available version of iOS for around a week now, but recently, when I wanted to use a preinstalled application they would load, but just around a second later I would be at the home screen again.
(I'm not really in the mood to explain deeper right now, I'll reply to any questions I'm asked...)

Is it just the pre-installed apps, or most all apps.
Try this  - Reset the iPad by holding down on the Sleep and Home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons. (This is equivalent to rebooting your computer.) No data/files will be erased. http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1430

  • TextEdit crashes all the time with no apparent reason...

    Hi,
I have a problem. Whenever I open a .txt file with TextEdit, make some changes and hit "Save", TextEdit crashes. Every time! I have a brand new MacBook Pro with a brand new Snow Leopard install. It happens with files in different directories, and the same files can be modified without problems in other applications, so it has definitely nothing to do with file corruption. Console does not report anything except stuff like
    ([0x0-0x22022].com.apple.TextEdit[226]) Exited: Terminated
    when I force-quit TextEdit.
    Any ideas?
    2.8 GHz unibody MBP, OS X 10.6.2

Testing in a new User will quickly tell you if the problem is system wide or
if it's your User's folder that contains the problem.
Go to System Preferences --> Create a New User in Accounts. Switch to the New User by logging out/in or use Fast User Switching. Test TextEdit in the new User.
If the problems go away, the culprit is in your User's folder.
If the problems still exist, it's a problem at the base level of your system.
If the problem is in your User's folder, I would delete caches first and check for bad/duplicate fonts. Next trash preference files.
If the problem existed in the new User, you need to re-install Snow Leopard. Insert the Snow Leopard DVD and install over your current install. It installs like a combo updater and can fix problems. YOu will need to update to 10.6.2. Use the 10.6.2 combo updater rather than use the Software Updater.
