[SOLVED]Network/Wireless, after 15mins, locks sudo [..]
Hello,
I have been using Ubuntu for a while and wanted to move to Arch Linux. I did. Got everything set up but have one major problem.
Wireless.
I have my wireless driver installed through Ndiswrapper and works. Connecting to the router is fine. No problems there. Can go on the internet. But after 15 mins or so (varies) it gets broken and locks programs out.
The programs I've noticed which get locked out are:
sudo
gksu
conky
rebooting/shutdown (have to do a hard shutdown)
When I mean lock. Conky's display just stops. sudo does not do anything. reboot/shutdown just hangs.
I use iwconfig + dhcpcd to connect to my wireless.
I don't know If its my wireless as Its never done this in Ubuntu. It kept the connection and sudo, etc, was fine.
Am I missing a file/package? whats causing this!!
I have my host name correctly set up. (If that might effect anything.) Locales are fine. keyboard are fine..
Please. I would love to carry on using Arch! but this.. problem is kinda, well very annoying.
Thanks,
Tom
EDIT!!!
I have solved it!
It was due to Ndiswrapper 1.53 messing up and downgrading to Ndiswrapper 1.52 solved this. Now I have a very stable connection.
Look here to how to downgrade http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=54224

Also, you should use the testing sub-forum for issues with testing packages.
Thank you @tomk, but from what I've been able to glance at the kernel source tree, I realize that the package maintainers didn't compile brcmsmac module :-(
I suppose it's happened owing to the fact that all BRCM80211 drivers have been moved from staging branch into net subsystem right now (i.e. since Linux 3.2). So I'd prefer to wait for a new package release to solve the snag with this module rather than compiling it manually for myself. :-)

[ SOLVED ] Network disappears after a few reboots
I have tried to install Arch twice and both times after rebooting it several times network connection disappears ( i.e., daemon starts ok, but no connection is preset ).
By looking at the error.log, it seems that dhcpcd fails to obtain requested IP address ( nothing specified in rc.conf ).
Is there anything I might be missing or it is a know problem ( saw the same question somewhere else ) ?

could you please mark the thread as solved?
you could do so by editing the first post

[solved] network gone after last update (vmware player)
at boot i get no such interface error
from ifconfig i get only loopback
dmesg
vmxnet: disagrees about version of symbol ...
vmxnet: Unknown symbol ...
Removed interfaces and added again with same result
Let me know if i should file a bug or how to fix it.
Ps. glibc update finished ok
Ps2. using open-vm-tools-modules 21-2 ( will check 21-5) if it fixes issue need usb dongle to do so though
ps3 will try chroot from iso and update
Last edited by eltebe (2012-07-24 15:54:54)not sure now what was the cause(maybe kernel/gcc those I updated) but i fixed it with those steps
1 new vm with netinstall iso mounted(didn't even install arch on sda) ifconfig eth0 up, dhcpcd eth0
2 usb dongle with ext2 filesystem(made with netinstall vm)
3 pacman -Sy and feed var/lib/pacman/ from bootcd vm to the one with problems
4 save needed packages list on usb from vm with problems(pacman -Sup --noconfirm > /mnt/pendrive/pkglist)
5 set pacman cache on pendrive mount in netinstall vm(/etc/pacman.conf)
6 make pacman -S .....all_from_pkglist..... just leave package names alone and save, chmod a+x,run(wget didn't work out - maybe outdated mirror or paths)
7 copy downloaded packages from pendrive to /var/cache/pacman/pkg on broken vm
8 run pacman -Su on vm with problems
I might have changed something in the process of fixing things but I don't recall it now
https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Of … f_Packages was usefull
It is marked as out of date but it worked. Maybe because i haven't done it step by step and took only bits I needed

Hello,
I'm having problems with my wireless network connections, too. I did a fresh arch install with gnome3 some days ago to avoid any issues when upgrading, but i just can't access any wireless networks now. Everything else works like a charm, though. I followed the usual steps to set up my network/wifi with all the required modules and packages (broadcom-wl from the AUR, etc.) but it doesn't work like it did with gnome2 and xfce4.
My iwconfig/ifconfig output looks like dave1022's. Don't know if this is of any help...
The nm-applet in the gnome3 "panel" actually lists nearby wireless networks, but once I click on one of them, gnome asks me for authentification with my root password (user password does not work). I don't think it should be this way. If I enter my root password here, nothing happens whenever I click on the concerned network to connect to it. I deleted the /etc/NetworkManager/system-connections/<SSID> file to reset the authentification process.
I tried to consult the gnome3 pages in the wiki, but couldn't find any valueable hints either...does anyone have any idea what I might have done wrong or forgotten?
It's exactly the same for me and it's driving me nuts. I'm using iwl3945
[EDIT]
Well... actually installing the applet solved it for me. Is the applet actually needed for Gnome 3 or is a workaround?

My iMac does not connect to internet via wireless after I log in. I have to open network preferences and run the assistant everytime to make it work. Its a new system, updated to Mountain Lion,.
Hi, this has worked for a few...
Make a New Location, Using network locations in Mac OS X ...
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2712
10.7…
System Preferences>Network, top of window>Locations>Edit Locations, little plus icon, give it a name.
10.5.x/10.6.x/10.7.x instructions...
System Preferences>Network, click on the little gear at the bottom next to the + & - icons, (unlock lock first if locked), choose Set Service Order.
The interface that connects to the Internet should be dragged to the top of the list.
Instead of joining your Network from the list, click the WiFi icon at the top, and click join other network. Fill in everything as needed.
For 10.5/10.6, System Preferences>Network, unlock the lock if need be, highlight the Interface you use to connect to Internet, click on the advanced button, click on the DNS tab, click on the little plus icon, then add these numbers...
208.67.222.222
208.67.220.220
Click OK.
Also, turn off IPv6:
System Preferences » Network » AirPort » TCP/IP tab » Configure IPv6
Or whatever Interface you use. -
Having issues with WRT54GS router acquiring network address after wireless connection.
I've been experiencing problems acquiring a network address after making a wireless connection with the WRT54GS wireless router. I have a Comcast cable modem connected to the internet port of the router and after configuring the SSID and the 64 bit WEP key, I can connect to my router's SSID, but since I can't get an IP address, never connect to the Internet. I've already cloned the laptop's mac address to no avail. Even after configuring a static IP address, subnet mask and default gateway, still cannot connect. I can Ping and Traceroute from the router but not the PC. I can ping localhost and host IP address from the laptop but not the default gateway. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks, SJ
Connect the computer to the router with the Ethernet cable.
Try to access the internet when you connect the computer to the router with the Ethernet cable.
Open the setup page of the router and go to Status page. Check the Internet IP address on the status page of the router.
If you are able to access the Internet with the Wired connection to the router then try to create a new wireless network on your router.
Open the setup page of the router and go to Wireless tab. Change the wireless network name SSID and change the channel to 11. Save the settings. Go to Wireless security sub tab and check the wireless security settings. Click on Wireless MAC filter sub tab and make sure that it is disabled. Click on Advanced wireless settings sub tab. Change the Beacon Interval to 75, RTS and fragmentation threshold to 2304. Save the settings.
Try to connect to the new wireless network and see if that works.
How many wired and wireless computers do you have in the network? -
Lost my wireless network connection after downloading wi-fi
After receiving email saying I was eligible for verizon wifi- I registered for it on my desktop that was networked wirelessly with a Linksys adapter. Not knowing the only way the wifi works is with a verizon router!
I have a new netgear router. All other wireless connection to my home network still work but the desktop that downloaded the registration (HAHA) and the new vz pc helper whatever. Now my linksys adapter isnt recognized anymore. I even tried it on another pc? Is there something I can do to make my desktop recognize the wireless network adapter again?
I have removed and reinstalled linksys with no luck. PC wont even attempt to find wireless connection?
Ugggggg I hope this didn't fry my adapter!Hi Blgoodie,
I have only the vaguest idea what's wrong. But a system restore should fix this problem, so try that first. -
Windows 8.1 Lock Screen drops network connectivity when screen locked using Win+L
Hi!
I was sent here from Microsoft Community forum. The question is:
Since Windows NT 4.0 I'm using Lock Screen to prevent people from accessing my computer when I'm leaving my room. First I was using CTRL+ALT+DEL / Lock Screen, then switched to Win+L keyboard shortcut when it was first introduced.
Everything was fine until I switched to Windows 8.1 computer (Sony Vaio Duo 13 with Broadcom wireless network controller). This machine is 8.1, not 8.0 upgraded to 8.1.
My problem is that when I hit Win+L combo the Lock Screen (with clock etc.) is displayed. Then, despite I have configured not to turn off display, the screen goes blank (after 30 seconds since lock) and network connectivity is cut off from desktop
apps (I suspect the system goes into Active Standby mode, because Modern UI apps like Tune-In radio keep working fine).
100% repeatable scenarios:
## Scenario 1 ##
1) Log in
2) Open desktop app that uses network connectivity. Outlook 2013 from Office365 subscription
3) Check that it has connected
4) Lock screen (Win+L)
5) Wait for 30 seconds (first incorrectly posted as few minutes) as screen goes black
6) Unlock screen (using password)
7) In right corner of Outlook app you will see "Unable to connect with Exchange server" and few seconds later it will reconnect sucessfuly
## Scenario 2 - the more annoying ##
1) Log in to Win 8.1 computer
2) Connect to it using SMB (in my case I wanted to transfer 30 GB of files from local hard drive C: to server) \\COMPUTER-NAME\c$ from Windows Server 2012 R2
3) Start copying files from computer to server
4) Lock the screen on computer
5) As soon as screen goes black server displays message "Lost connection to the resource. Try again?"
6) Unlock screen on the computer
7) Click "Try again" and it will continue copying files
My power settings are set to go into stand by after 5 hours and if I not lock the screen it doesn't go to sleep before 5 hours.
When I lock the screen using Win+L it goes into (probably Active) Standby mode.
Is there any way to prevent it from going to Active Standby when locking screen? I need the screen lock for security reasons but I don't want it to drop my network connectivity on remote desktops, file transfers and other desktop activities before 5 hour
timeout.
This issue is not related to more or less known wireless network connectivity problem that happens to many Intel Haswell computers. Mine doesn't exhibit those problems. I can easly push 100 - 200 GB of wireless data without network drops.
Computer information:
Sony Vaio Duo 13: SVD1322C5E

Best regards,
SergiuszSame issue here using Surface 3 Pro with either internal WLAN or MS USB LAN Adapter. I'm frequently used to keep open connections over SSH to some servers. On switching to lock screen explicitly by pressing Win+L or implicitly due to idle timeout all
connections to servers are lost. In addition, I don't get any notifications on incoming Skype messages (using Skype for desktop) when lock screen is active.
Neither NIC is showing "Power Management Tab" according to step 5 of instructions above.
Additionally observing USB LAN NIC seems to be kept active after activating lock screen, but traffic stops (according to its flashing light) when lock screen is switching off display. Blanking display doesn't seem to be adjustable in System Settings (Energy
Options accessed through Win+X).
Find attached log file of powercfg -energy -duration 300 ...
Log file is in German. It basically claims unset timeouts for deactivating display while running attached to power supply though lock screen is turning off displays within 1-2 minutes.

P.S. Wireless LAN Mini-PCI Express Adapter II.
x100e Type 3508-4RGHello,
I have replaced the wireless adapter inside my ThinkPad X100e with a Lenovo-branded Intel adapter and experienced the same problem. As a workaround, I found that uninstalling the wireless adapter in the Device Manager (filename: DEVMGMT.MSC) and then letting the device be re-detected solves the problem. I am running Microsoft Windows 7 Ultimate x64 Edition, obtained through MSDN, and do not use Access Connections to manage my network connections.

Aryeh Goretsky

IMac losing connecting for wireless after restart
Hi,
As subject suggests, i'm having a problem with the wireless after a restart. It's the new 2.4 24" imac.
I have had the same problem on 3 other imacs but cant remember how to solve it......
Something about deleting old connections and added it manually... anyway could someone point me to the link that apple published regarding this issue please?
Thanks
DarrenI have been having a similar issue with my early-2007 iMac 24. It often will not reconnect after having been asleep. Sometimes I can turn off and back on my wireless settings and it may reconnect. Sometimes I can reboot and it may reconnect. There are times like today, that I tried both several times and even the suggestions in the article you posted (even though I didn't know about the article). I finally got it reconnected this time by allowing my router to broadcast its SSID. I use two different routers since the Airport doesn't have much for me to control what Websites my children have access to, so I will try to experiment with both to see if the iMac will more reliably detect the one that broadcasts its SSID. I started on this line of thinking, because my iMac also gives me a list of other available networks of neighbors when it will not connect to my own routers even though I can connect to the routers with other computers using the same wireless settings.

Network problem after new OSX update download
Greetings!
I've had a new (late 06) Intel 24" iMac networked wirelessly to my older iMac/cable modem/D-Link router very successfully since October. No problems and seamless set-up through the D-Link online wizard software.
Saturday I noticed an OSX upgrade to 10.4.8 (211mg) and went ahead and did the download on the wireless (Intel) iMac.
Upon restart, however, I have not been able to reconnect to my network. Airport is ON, but choosing my network name returns an error message. I have also attempted to reboot both cable modem and router, and reentered the D-Link wizard to both doublecheck the old network, and set up a new network, but saving these settings seems to fail by not recognizing the device, the router.
One of the error messages (on the wireless iMac) claims that my "settings have been changed by another application" (or to that effect) but does not give any clue as to how to determine what or where.
Also, since attempting to start from scrtch with the router, I no longer seem to get a full signal from the airport -- in Internet Connect, I no longer see a nice row of blue signal lights.
As you may be able to tell, I am new to networking, and the D-Link setup had helped make it simple -- tht is, I bumbled my way through it and was pleased with how well it worked. Now, after the OS update, not having the network is annoying -- and potentilly disastrous, as I need this machine online by Saturday.
Anyone able to give me a gentle hand, or nudge in the right direction?
Thanks in advance!
Bill
PS- Mac user since 1991! Wireless network user since only late October!Hi again,
Sorry, BDAqua, I didn't see your note. I don't quite understand the last line of your suggestion -- a number greater than the number of CPUs? Not sure what you mean...
Phil, thanks for your note, too.
I believe the answer to your first question is 802.11g -- this is what it was set to.
After trying again to connect, using my old passwords, I was able to see the blue signal strength barss, and the Airport icon flashed on and off a few times, but ultimately the connection attempt failed again every time I tried it.
At this point, I'm no longer confident that my router is sending out a recognizable signal -- is this possible?
Also, in the dialog box in which available networks are usually shown (which has not happened since my original connection in October), today I was faced with a choice I hadn't seen before: 2WIRE736 -- is this likely to be someone else's network (a neighbor's)? I was wondering -- I'd never seen that one before. However, my own network names do not show up for choosing, and when I use Internet Connect to request them (and add WPA Personal and passwords), the connection appears to fail immediately.
At this point, should I attempt an OSX reinstall? Or has something I described made some sense for you?
Again, still very appreciative of all your help and patience with my ignorance.

Networked computer will not join network automatically after restart/sleep
Situation:
I've got two computers - PowerBook 17" 1,25 GHz, iMac 2,16 GHz 24", both running OS X 10.4.8. They are networked via AirPort Express, firmware v. 6.3, in a WPA protected network. The AirPort distributes ADSL 4 Mbps connection.
Computers are set as DHCP with manual address (to keep stable LAN address)
The problem: While the PowerBook always joins the network after restart/sleep automatically, iMac in such a situation never goes online - the airport status in menu bar is on, the network is checked, but it cannot connect or be reached.
I always have to manually turn airport of from menu bar, then turn it on, then wait about 20 seconds and then manually choose name of my network.
After this procedure iMac is finally online.
Settings of the AirPort are:
AirPort tab
Wireless Security: WPA2 personal
Channel: Automatic
Mode: 802/11 g/b
Internet tab
Connecting using: Ethernet
Configure: Using DHCP
WAN ethernet port: Automatic
Network tab
Distribute IP address unchecked (no difference when checked - tested)
Any idea how to fix it?
Thanks in advance!
PowerBook 1,25 17", iMac 24" Mac OS X (10.4.8)Thanks a bunch, Duane!
You pointed me to the exact answer.
iMac joins the network automatically now, although I had to change original automatic login of an admin user to manual login page, because after automatic login as one of three users, an error message "Network error" appeared quicker than the actual joining the network, that came a few seconds later.
After manual logging (it probably needed a little more time) it's OK.
Thanks again and greeting from Czech Republic!

Loss of network connectivity after reboot
I'm new to Macs, so please excuse any ignorance. I'm trying to finally get my G5 on my wireless network. I have an airport card installed and I can successfully connect to my wireless after I enter the network name and WEP key.
However, if I reboot the computer, it seems to forget all this information. If I want to get back online, I have to enter the network and WEP info again, as if it was a new network every time. Needless to say, this is very annoying.
If anyone has any ideas what I may be doing wrong, I would be very appreciative. I had always heard Macs were insanely user friendly, so I'm shocked at how much trouble I'm having. I have to think that I'm just doing something wrong. Please help!In network preferences, add your network's name to your list of 'preferred networks', and set it to automatically connect to servers in your preferred list.
