[Solved] No sound in either mplayer or vlc

I am completely at a loss with this problem, when I play a video file on mplayer, let's say, I just type "mplayer <file>", things seem to set to their proper devices without any errors...
Opening audio decoder: [mp3lib] MPEG layer-2, layer3
AUDIO: 48000 Hz, 2 ch, s16le, 128.0 kbit/8.33% (ratio: 16000->192000)
Selected audio codec: [mp3] afm: mp3lib (mp3lib MPEG layer-2, layer3)
==================================================
AO: [oss] 48000Hz 2ch s16le (2 bytes per sample)
Starting playback...
It makes even less sense since I'm using OSS with MPD and NCMPCPP runs freakin beautifully when it comes to music.  But trying to play even music with mplayer -- no sound, even though it appears loaded, I checked mute levels, using alsa, downloaded mplayer-w32codecs, tried it with alsa-plugins installed, used "-ao alsa," to try alsa then all others, and it chose oss again.  Most other posts I run across on google are like 2-3 yrs old, and no one here seems to be quite experiencing my same problems (which seems to be like every post I've been making recently! *grumble*)

Had to output to a file and open with mousepad to copy and paste, here's the verbose (didn't know this existed!)

  • [SOLVED]no sound in smplayer and vlc,while the flashplugine has sound.

    After the installation of archlinux with the kernel sound component alsa ,I installed vlc,mplayer,smplayer,and smplayer by pacman.now,I can hear sound in the firefox flashplugine,but there are only pictures when I use vlc or smplayer to play movies.I has tried to modified the mplayer config file to set ao=alsa,or modified the audio output driver and channels options by SMPlayer Gui,but it doesn't work.I'm sure the volumn is set to max value and mute option is off.
    Thanks for any advice.
    The problem is that dbus daemon was not running while playing movies by smplayer,start dbus daemon and add dbus daemon to rc.conf,fixed.

  • [Solved] Multiple sounds at the same time

    Hello!
    I've just received my new Creative X-Fi Titanium since I was in need of an optical in socket and have spent a while trying to get it to work to my liking.
    I read through the ALSA wiki, read countless posts on the forums such as this one http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?pid=702994, tried several .asoundrc files and of course read the related arch wiki pages without much success.
    Everything is upmixed properly to 5.1 output but I still can't play two sounds at once - with one odd exception:
    When I have mpd playing and start a youtube video, sound will play but it will only output through the 2 front speakers and I can pause and unpause mpd normally, sound will return.
    When I pause mpd and play a youtube video, it gets upmixed properly but mpd returns "error: problems opening sound device".
    Mplayer returns [AO_ALSA] alsa-lib: pcm_hw.c:1291:(snd_pcm_hw_open) open /dev/snd/pcmC0D0p failed: Invalid argument and [AO_ALSA] alsa-lib: pcm_dmix.c:1060:(snd_pcm_dmix_open) unable to open slave.
    Heroes of Newerth returns the same: ALSA lib pcm_dmix.c:1060:(snd_pcm_dmix_open) unable to open slave.

    If anyone could hint me in the right direction as to how I could get it to work properly or provide me with a working .asoundrc, I'd appreciate it!

    Good. So file the damned bug report against mpd. Right now would be a good time.
    eyescream wrote:but flash completely blocks sound off for other things.
    See thread. Prove to me that flash/firefox is blocking:
    fuser -v /dev/snd/* /dev/dsp*
    eyescream wrote:The problem now is that mpd only outputs through my front speakers, so it isn't being upmixed anymore.
    Forget about upmixing for the moment, until you've got the ALSA/OSS conflict solved.
    Edit: Use e.g.:
    audio_output {
    type "alsa"
    name "Sound Card"
    options "dev=dmixer"
    device "headphones"
    In /etc/mpd.conf or ~/.mpdconf, where the device string matches an ALSA pcm entry.
    eyescream wrote:What do you mean by not renaming "default" exactly?
    This, of course, from your own ~/.asoundrc
    # change default device:
    pcm.!default {
         type plug
         slave {
        pcm "duplex"
    Comment that section out, for the time being.

    This is true with multiple players (mplayer/audacious/vlc).
    I don't even get the beep I usually get when I shutdown.
    Here are the updates that you and I have in common.
    upgraded db (4.8.24-1 -> 4.8.26-1)
    upgraded gzip (1.3.13-1 -> 1.4-1)
    upgraded tzdata (2009t-1 -> 2010a-1)

    upgraded python (2.6.4-1 -> 2.6.4-2)
    upgraded dcron (3.2-4 -> 4.4-1)
    Figured more information wouldn't hurt.
    [edit]: Forgot to mention, this occurs on an Acer Aspire One.
    I met this problem first time,before this my sound works pretty good,i hope it will be fixed in next update!

  • IPod will not play any music. Seems like it is in "Pause" mode.  No sound from either the head phones or internal speaker.  I have 418 songs stored and none will play.

    iPod will not play any music. Seems like it is in “Pause” mode.  No sound from either the head phones or internal speaker.  I have 418 songs stored and none will play. I have tried resetting, turning on and off the iPod, etc. but to no avail.

    Try restoring from backup. Next would be a restore to factory defaults/new iPod.

  • Can't play a movie downloaded via iTunes (.m4v) in either XBMC or VLC

    Hi, I hope someone can help with this.
    As a recent iPhone user I have begun to iTunes to manage and purchase my music collection; I also thought this would be a good idea for new films too.
    I have recently downloaded the digital copy of a Bluray (Star Trek; triple play) via itunes and have no problems playing the file in iTunes. However, as I still run a PC and am looking to create an XBMC box, I have since found that I cannot play this digital copy of the film in either XBMC or VLC. Both programs can play .mp4 files, but not the .m4v file that iTunes has let me download.
    Is this DRM management? Have I now limited myself to playing this film only in itunes? - really disappointed if this is the case.
    Any help or input would be greatly recieved.
    Cheers

    Try to get a refund, I'm not sure of the number but you can call 800-APL-CARE to try to get redirected to the right place to get a refund or answer your problem. I don't know anything regarding your issue.

  • Sound working randomly in flash, vlc, gnome-mplayer since today

    Hello,
    My sound setup worked perfectly since my Arch install, but I see today that now my sound setup works randomly in flashplayer, vlc media player, and gnome-mplayer :S
    My channels aren't muted in alsamixer, of course my speakers are on...
    I don't see where the problem is :s
    Any idea ?
    Thank you

    Okay, I found the problem:
    I thought that this bug happened randomly, but it's not the case
    In fact, I don't lost the sound, but every time I start playing a file with gnome-mplayer, the PCM channel of my sound configuration is significantly decreased
    I saw that by running alsamixer when I noticed a sound problem
    Is that a "feature" or a bug ?

  • [SOLVED] No sound with phonon-vlc

    I have recently installed Arch Linux and everything's going pretty nice (awesome documentation btw) except for the sound.
    I am using the VLC backend for Phonon.
    I have two sound cards:
    -Sound Blaster Audigy 2 ZS
    -Integrated on ATI Radeon HD-4850
    I'm using the former. The settings for Phonon detect lists a lot of Audigy2 devices.
    When I booted up and logged in, sometimes sound worked, sometimes it didn't.
    Everytime I logged in Phonon said an audio device has been removed (lie) and asked me if it can forget it. I once clicked yes. Now there's never any sound.
    I have looked at the troubleshooting page in the wiki and there was a solution for the first problem ("Random Lack of Sound on Startup"), I followed the instructions and created /etc/asound.conf and put this in it:
    ctl.dmixer {
    type hw
    card Audigy2
    It didn't do much good.
    When I run speaker-test, I get this:
    speaker-test 1.0.24.2
    Playback device is default
    Stream parameters are 48000Hz, S16_LE, 1 channels
    Using 16 octaves of pink noise
    ALSA lib pcm_dmix.c:1018:(snd_pcm_dmix_open) unable to open slave
    Playback open error: -2,No such file or directory
    Any help is much appreciated.
    EDIT: The problem was not with Phonon. The problem was that ALSA sometimes chose the wrong sound card as default.

    I'm having the same problem (after upgrading), but your trick doesn't help. I only have one device anyway:
    # cat /proc/asound/cards
    0 [Audigy2 ]: Audigy2 - SB Audigy 2 Platinum [SB0240P]
    SB Audigy 2 Platinum [SB0240P] (rev.4, serial:0x10021102) at 0x9000, irq 19
    Also, I do have sound in a TTY console, but applications started in KDE (either in Konsole or graphically) don't have sound. When I start audacious, it says:
    ALSA error: snd_mixer_attach failed: No such file or directory.
    ALSA error: snd_pcm_open failed: No such file or directory.

  • [solved]no sound in vlc after change to fluxbox!!

    hi,
    im in the process of changing from kde to fluxbox. ive been using arch with kde for about 4 months, but got annoyed at memory consumption!! vlc was fine in kde.
    i installed fluxbox, and used the existing kde programs to get me going in fluxbox, but over the last couple of days, i have swapped one kde app out for another app in (e.g. konqueror out - pcmanfm in) ive been using xmms for my music at which point i uninstalled amarok, but decided i wanted to watch a film, so.....
    i got vlc going and the picture was there, but no sound!! so....
    i reinstalled vlc, no difference!
    i tried mplayer, no sound!
    i then went to youtube.com and again, no sound!
    so basically, i get sound out of xmms, but nothing else!! i havent played with any config files, i have just set a couple of apps to autostart, and installed about 5 apps thru pacman!!
    any suggestion or advice would be extremely well appreciated!
    thanks!

    ok, i just went back into kde, fired up vlc before i did anythin else and sound! so went back into fluxbox, did the same, and sound in vlc!!! thought ok, it just needed X restarting! but then fired up xmms, and nothin else would produce sound!!
    it seems like xmms is taking over the whole sound server and nothing else can use sound as long as its running! even if xmms isnt playing, but just running! is there a way around this? or can someone recommend another music player?

  • [SOLVED] No sound from tv card with mplayer, only arecord/aplay

    So I finally got my Hauppauge 950Q usb tv tuner working with mplayer so I can see the video with this command:
    mplayer tv:// -tv driver=v4l2:norm=NTSC:input=0:device=/dev/video1:chanlist=us-cable
    but I can't get any sound unless I run this command simultaneously:
    arecord -D hw:1,0 -r 32000 -c 2 -f S16_LE | aplay
    I assume I need to translate the arecord arguements into mplayer arguements, but I'm not really sure how.  Can anyone help me out?
    Thanks!

    I followed the directions here: http://inspirated.com/2007/04/05/alsa-l … th-mplayer and made the command:
    mplayer tv:// -tv driver=v4l2:norm=NTSC:input=0:device=/dev/video1:chanlist=us-cable:alsa:adevice=hw.1,0:amode=2:audiorate=32000:forceaudio:immediatemode=0
    and now it works.

  • No sound (but beep present) and vlc error [Solved]

    Hello,
    I don't know why but after reboot Arch, I don't have any sound except I can hear the beep. I try different methods to have sound again. But none of them worked.
    I really don't know what to do.
    If it cant help , the output of cat /proc/asound/cards is:
    0 [PCH ]: HDA-Intel - HDA Intel PCH
    HDA Intel PCH at 0xd4520000 irq 54
    1 [Generic ]: HDA-Intel - HD-Audio Generic
    HD-Audio Generic at 0xd4420000 irq 55
    I have a .asoundrc in my home which is:
    pcm.!default {
    type hw
    card 0
    ctl.!default {
    type hw
    card 0
    When I test that command: speaker-test -c 2.
    I hear nothing and the output is :
    Playback device is default
    Stream parameters are 48000Hz, S16_LE, 2 channels
    Using 16 octaves of pink noise
    Rate set to 48000Hz (requested 48000Hz)
    Buffer size range from 64 to 1048576
    Period size range from 32 to 524288
    Using max buffer size 1048576
    Periods = 4
    was set period_size = 262144
    was set buffer_size = 1048576
    0 - Front Left
    1 - Front Right
    When I run vlc i have a error which is :
    pulse audio output error: PulseAudio server connection failure: Connection refused.
    I think that error is because I install pulseaudio. But when I change the audio device with PCH or Generic, I have this error:
    mpgatofixed32 audio converter error: libmad error: bad main_data_begin pointer.
    And sound it's not working in any browser. But what I find weird it's I can't hear sound like music but I can still hear the beep when I'm on a tty.
    I thank you in advance for your help.

    You should avoid using card number in your .asoundrc. Using card name is recommended, since soundcards may be recognised in different order at boot. It may interfere with modules. So assuming your default card name is PCH use following code:
    pcm.!default {
    type hw
    card PCH
    ctl.!default {
    type hw
    card PCH
    Instead of simply using speaker-test try
    aplay -D PCH /usr/share/sounds/alsa/Front_Left.wav
    #eventually
    aplay -D plughw:PCH /usr/share/sounds/alsa/Front_Left.wav
    #or
    speaker-test -D PCH
    to test a specific card directly.
    Next check your loaded sound modules. Your should have snd-hda-intel specified to load somewhere in /etc/modules-load.d, so to check this you can use:
    grep -Ri snd /etc/modules-load.d
    #also check what you have loaded
    lsmod | grep snd_hda
    From what I understand your hardware is, you should have snd-hda-intel model=pch loaded. Check /etc/modprobe.d also. Maybe it got changed in the upgrade.
    The reason your hearing sound is that you have pcspkr module loaded and I assume most engineers design a hardware mix/mux between internal and external speakers in laptops, even though they seem to be two different devices. You should be able to use beep or something similar in X to test it.
    Is a user required to be in audio user group to use pulseaudio? Is the pulseaudio server running?
    Do you have a HDMI output on your laptop? I think the second soundcard is from your graphicscard and they usually use only one digital output, so if that card is used as primary you will not hear a thing.

  • [SOLVED] static sound in VLC after upgrade to 2.0.5-3

    Hello all,
    VLC was working flawlessly, had sound, could open multiple videos at one time, no issue..
    Performed a pacman -Syyu last night, VLC upgraded, and now I can only open 1 video at a time, and that video has static for audio.
    I downgraded to VLC 2.0.5-2, and now VLC won't play ANY videos, I get this:
    No suitable decoder module:
    VLC does not support the audio or video format "WMA2". Unfortunately there is no way for you to fix this.

    There seem to be a couple problems with latest VLC, e.g. https://bugs.archlinux.org/task/33833
    I had a couple problems, including the unkown format WMA2 when downgrading only VLC.
    To fix the problem for now downgrades to
       ffmpeg-1:1.0.1-1
       vlc-2.0.5-2
       x264-20121113-1
    should do the trick.

  • [SOLVED] No sound in browser

    Hi everyone!
    I recently moved from Ubuntu to Arch (Yeah!). Everything was fine, the installation was quite easy and I found everything I needed with on the official repos and AUR.
    I only have one major problem: There is absolutely no sound in my browser (I tried both Firefox and Chromium). The problem is not only with flash, html5 audio does not work either.
    The sound works in vlc, xmms2 and everything else, except for the browsers. I tried to figure out the problem for hours, looking in many forums and installing different packages.
    I don't know where to go now. I don't really understand how do sound works in Linux and I don't know which information I should give here and where to find it.
    Does anyone have an idea ? Which information should I dump here to help ?
    Thanks !

    Ok I solve my problem.
    I have two sound card: "Generic" (HDMI) and "Generic_1" (Analog). The "alsa: default" device was set to "Generic".
    I only changed the "alsa: default" device to use "Generic_1".

  • [Solved] No sound on X, but it works on the console

    I'm not sure what went wrong, so I'll tell the full story: I was struggling to get the Catalyst driver working. I have a Dell 5547, which has two graphics cards, an Intel HD 4400 and a Radeon R7 M260. I had installed the packages catalyst-hook and catalyst-utils-pxp from Vi0l0's repositories, but couldn't start X when I switched to the AMD card. Eventually, I downgraded to Xorg 1.14, also from Vi0l0's repositories, and now I was able to start X with both graphic cards. I'd read on The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill that downgrading to the Linux kernel 3.15.8 solved Daniel.White's problems, so I downloaded the corresponding linux and linux-headers packages from the Arch Rollback Machine. Later, I installed the last Linux kernel (version 3.16.1) and verified that I could still start X with both cards.
    Before downgrading to Xorg 1.14, I installed Gnome 3 and everything worked great. I could listen to my music and watch videos on YouTube. Somewhere along the way, however, my sound stopped working. I'm using pulseaudio, and even after changing the settings using pavucontrol, I still can't get the audio to work -- on X. Sound works great on the console, but it refuses to work after I start X.
    When I boot my computer and open an audio file with, say, mplayer, it complains that the "Audio device got stuck!"
    pavucontrol reports that I have two built-in audio devices. The first one is off, and the second is set to "Analog Stereo Duplex". If I turn it off and then back on, mplayer stops complainning, but no sound comes out. On the "Output Devices" tab, pavucontrol now says that I have a "Dummy Output". It reverts back to normal once I reboot the machine.
    Here's some info I think might be useful:
    /etc/asound.conf:
    # Use PulseAudio by default
    pcm.!default {
    type pulse
    fallback "sysdefault"
    hint {
    show on
    description "Default ALSA Output (currently PulseAudio Sound Server)"
    ctl.!default {
    type pulse

    Hi emeres, thanks for the answer. I edited /etc/modprobe.d/50-alsa-base.conf as you suggested, then rebooted.
    $ cat /etc/modprobe.d/50-alsa-base.conf
    options snd-hda-intel index=1
    options snd-hda-intel index=0
    $ aplay -l
    aplay: device_list:268: no soundcards found...

    00:1b.0 Audio device [0403]: Intel Corporation 8 Series HD Audio Controller [8086:9c20] (rev 04)
    While mplayer is trying to play an MP3 file, I ran:

    00:1b.0 Audio device [0403]: Intel Corporation 8 Series HD Audio Controller [8086:9c20] (rev 04)
    I edited 50-alsa-base.conf once again and rebooted the system.
    $ cat /etc/modprobe.d/50-alsa-base.conf
    options snd-hda-intel index=1,0
    $ aplay -l
    aplay: device_list:268: no soundcards found...
    $ lspci -nn | grep -i audio

    00:1b.0 Audio device [0403]: Intel Corporation 8 Series HD Audio Controller [8086:9c20] (rev 04)
    I even tried adding this to 50-alsa-base.conf:
    options snd-hda-intel index=1 model=auto vid=8086 pid=0a0c
    options snd-hda-intel index=0 model=auto vid=8086 pid=9c20
    Then rebooted. Nothing changed. I swapped the indexes and that didn't work either.
    Then I exited Gnome and ran aplay -l on tty1:

    pgrep indicated that pulseaudio was indeed running, and I could play an MP3 with mplayer -ao pulse a.mp3. So, pulseaudio is running before X starts. I've checked my ~/.xinitrc and /etc/X11/xinit. Nothing there. That's crazy; what could be running that only affects X? Also, this problem is window-manager independent. It doesn't matter whether I'm running gnome3 or i3, I can't play audio inside X. If I go to tty3, for instance, sound works just fine.
