[SOLVED] Nvidia 330m with driver 340xx: black screen

Hi, I've been battling with this since last upgrade and had to rollback to nouveau drivers.
When installing nvidia-340xx, it gets loaded correctly (checked with lsmod). It does also start the X server (checked Xorg.0.log and lightdm logs).
However, the screen stays black. I've tried several config changes and grub options to no avail. Anyone had this problem? Any inputs at all?
To be clear, I'm able to correctly install the driver: as a proof, I've installed 304xx and it worked fine (although it had some glitches when running games - nouveau is doing a bit better).
I've tried it on both linux and linux-lts, updating the initramfs accordingly. I've also tried nvidia-340xx-dkms, using nvidia-hook in mkinitcpio.conf - same result. Loaded, but black screen.
Thanks for any help/suggestion you can give.

This happens with my kernel configuration right after loading the NVidia module. Actually it sometimes happens more than once per boot. For some reason the NVidia module loaded into the stock kernel doesn't exhibit this problem.
Anyway, this is what causes the black screen. The kernel is then in an undefined state, i.e., Alt+PrtSc+R restores at least the response to CapsLock ;-) and other magic keys also work, but the display remains dead, i.e., no console, no framebuffer, nothing.

Try searching for the name of one of your videos on the iPad's spotlight search screen - swipe your first homescreen to the right, type in it's name, and if it finds it tap on it to see if it plays.
If that doesn't work then I normally suggest closing the Videos app via the taskbar and re-opening it, and then a reset by pressing and holding both the sleep and home buttons for about 10 to 15 seconds unilt the Apple logo should appear - but as it sounds like you've alreadt tried that, then see if the spotlight search works.

It's working for me, I'm on 340xx nvidia drivers and using sddm+plasma. I even have nouveau installed in parallel (blacklisted).
I don't know if it makes any difference, but I'm using the -ck variant of the kernel and the nvidia driver. libgl part is still the same though:

  • NVidia driver 185 black screens and 177 doesn't accelerate

    Hi,
I just installed Arch for the first time. All was goodish untill nVidia let me down.
    This is all with
Xorg 1.6.2, and the graphics chipset is:
    GeForce 9500 GT
There is trouble in two parts:
part I:  driver 185  sucks hard
I had to downgrade to nvidia-177 because of a bug I think is mentioned in the thread:
    http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=63281
Except now it is with kernel 2.6.30 and driver 185.
    I quote:
This morning, after some more attempts, I decided to re-install Arch.
Finished installing, Installed Xorg, Installed Nvidia-180.22, tried to "startx", and nothing - black screen,
nonresponsive mouse an keyboards, and the CPU sounds like it's going up the roof...
(The thing about the CPU means a fan starts spinning hard.)
This happens for just about any xorg.conf that actually uses the nvidia driver.  For example, I can run nvidia-xconfig, and optionally  comment out the "InputDevice" lines and this will still happen.
There is no logfile at all.  Nor can I save anything on standard error.
    part II:  GoogleEarth (and others?)
GoogleEarth performs really badly with the nVidia driver.  It's actually much faster with the open source drivers (but still not smooth). I haven't tried any other 3D applications in a fair test.
This *might* be because the lib32-nvidia-utils (and hence libGL) does not come in a version for driver 177.

Hmm, I am glad there are some new threads about blackscreening nVidias, because I am not sure it is really the same problem.  My particular sickness has three symptoms:
    1)   17x drivers work while 18x don't (180,185, whatever).
    2)    It not only black screens, but sets a fan (presumably the CPU fan) spinning hard.
    3)   There is no logging available after reboot, either on standard error, or to the system logs.
Since the 17x drivers work, I'm just going to sit this one out.  One day I will upgrade to whatever is latest and see what happens.  I'm still disappointed that there are
so many problems with the nVidia drivers.  I thought they were solid.
    Cheers.

    # If the X server does not automatically detect your VGA device,
    # you can manually set it here.
    # To get the BusID prop, run `lspci | egrep 'VGA|3D'` and input the data
    # as you see in the commented example.
    # This Setting may be needed in some platforms with more than one
    # nvidia card, which may confuse the proprietary driver (e.g.,
    # trying to take ownership of the wrong device). Also needed on Ubuntu 13.04.
    # BusID "PCI:01:00:0"
    # Setting ProbeAllGpus to false prevents the new proprietary driver
    # instance spawned to try to control the integrated graphics card,
    # which is already being managed outside bumblebee.
    # This option doesn't hurt and it is required on platforms running
    # more than one nvidia graphics card with the proprietary driver.
    # (E.g. Macbook Pro pre-2010 with nVidia 9400M + 9600M GT).
    # If this option is not set, the new Xorg may blacken the screen and
    # render it unusable (unless you have some way to run killall Xorg).
    Option "ProbeAllGpus" "false"
    Option "NoLogo" "true"
    Option "UseEDID" "false"
    Option "UseDisplayDevice" "none"
    EndSection
If someone could enlighten me i would apreciate it..Thanks in advance

  • [FIXED BUT NOT SOLVED] NVIDIA - Desktop shifted left off the screen...

    Hello Community!
For a pretty long time right now, I am trying to fix the video setup of my HTPC but without success. Because I'am run out of ideas, I really need Your help.
    PROBLEM:
The desktop is shifted left off the screen, round about 100 Pixel.
It started some time in the past, while upgrading a one year old Ubuntu installation (NVDIA drivers). Because I couldn't fix it and also wanted to replace Ubuntu with ArchLinux, I performed a clean ArchLinux installation.
First I used the nouveau drivers ending up with the same problem. I read an configured using xrandr and cvt, but with no success.
So I restored the system to a snapshot taken before X11 and nouveau drivers installations, thank's BTRFS, and installed the proprietary NVIDIA drivers ending up with the same problems. Again I tried all the tips and tricks found in the documentations and forums, used nvidia-xconfig, hand crafted the xorg.conf all with no success.
    HARDWARE
The system is a MSI Media Live (http://www.msi.com/product/desktop/Media-Live.html)
. Support AMDR Athlon 64 X2, Athlon 64 and Sempron in the Socket AM2 package
    . North Bridge: nVidia® C51PVG Chipset
    . South Bridge: nVidia® MCP51 Chipset
. Graphics is Integrated NVIDIA GPU GeForce 6150 LE
. VGA, SCART and HDMI - Connectors
The display Problem is on VGA and HDMI now, where in the past the VGA was perfect. Therefor I connected and used the VGA port only, in all tests.

As You can see, I installed only a minimal X11 environment for test. The lxdm display manger shows up but with very small font and shifted to the left. Only if I force a resolution of 1024x768 the image is centered on screen/tv but still the very small font. Obviously not a solution for a HTPC.
Here are the xorg.conf and the Xorg.0.log of my last test configuration.

    Thank You Mr.Elendig!
The simplest answer often is best. After I connected a TFT display, instead of my TV, I was able to calibrate the screen output and got the desktop shifted. Knowing that, I tried the settings of my TV again. There is a hard to find option for calibration wich is set to automatic but doesn't do it. Trying to turn it of did the trick. Even the option stays on automatic and even the display format is fixed to 4:3 instead of 16:9, finaly the TV adjusted the display correctly.
None the less, the problem not to be able to shift the desktop using the screen paramters in xorg.conf remains.
    Thanks

  • Macintosh hard drive gone + Black screen Help!

    Hi
I have this problem where I always have to press option while my MacBook Pro boots up, then after it shows me the hard drive options, I have to choose that and it would load normally. For some reason , this happened after I unpartitioned my mac from windows 7. If I don't press option while it boots up, the screen will turn completely black. And when I try to boot it from the DVD, it will turn black and be in a state where you think it's turned off. I don't think it is because I can steal hear it trying to read the DVD.
My goal is to wipe out the data and make a clean reinstall action but its impossible if I can't start up from the DVD. I'm sure it's the DVD that came with it because I successfully done this before. Could it be that you can't do it twice? Well, I hope that's not the case because I really want to partition windows on it again. Oh, I forgot to mention that it won't let me repartition.
So, I try to boot from DVD and again, total black screen and noises. I've done extensive research and tried many things to get it to function properly but nothing helped! I'm sure I tried most of it. Pressing c, options, or restarting from system preferences. I even reset a million things. And if I try to boot it without pressing option and clicking Macintosh HD, then it would be totally black and some noises occur.
Since nothing seemed to work, I upgraded Snow leapord(don't even know if that would helped) and it turned out it was totally useless. It ended up getting rid of my Macintosh hard drive. I can't even go on it anymore. Please help!

  • Pics on my phone are gone...has been replaced with a blank black screen??

    Hello everyone,
So today I was browsing through my pics and noticed there were some pics that have been replaced with a black screen. I deleted like 4 of them, thinking I that they just "appeared" but I scrolled up and noticed that it was also a few videos and pics that I know I had that had been replaced as well. So has anyone had this happen to them? What did you? How do I get my pics back? And is this some sort of virus?

Ok I discovered the same thing today. Two of my pics were black. I just deleted them thinking I must of taken bad pics. I now know I didnt. Here's the funny thing, I came on here looking for a problem that is related to messaging, photos and video text messaging. All kinds of problems are showing up. I go to send a video in text messaging and it freezes up right before it sends..
    Does anyone know what's happening?

When I open a .mov film I filmed with my iPhone I only hear the sound but have a black screen. If I rewind the film or open it a second time, I can see something as well but never at first. Is that a bug or can I fix it somehow?

  • Start up issues with T707, lit black screen and directional pad.

    Hi,
I really need  some help with my T707. I'm currently getting a black screen when I turn it on,  and it won't advance further. The directional pad lights up, and it just stays  that way. What can I do, is there anyway to reset it? Whenever I take the  charger off, it is no longer lit, and I have tried a couple of batteries, and  they don't appear to make a difference. I've tried restoring factory settings, but I can't get it to be detected by my PC.
    Thanks in advance,

  • 285 GTX Mac and Windows XP booting with Boot Camp - Black Screen

I decided to update my 8800GT to the newer 285 GTX. Loaded the drivers, a must first, then installed the card. Booted the Mac and wow what an inprovement.
Here's where the problems start. I used Boot Camp to boot to my Windows XP 32 install in Bay 2. Got the Windows Start Up screen then nothing but black.
I reinstalled my 8800 GT and restarted the computer. I installed the latest nVidia drivers (190.38) in XP.
I reinstalled the 285 GTX and tries again. Mac worked fine when I restarted in XP got the Windows startup screen then nothing but black.
I could use some answers to solve this problem. I believe the 285 is supposed to work booting Windows from Boot Camp but I can't figure out how to make it work.
    Thanks in Advance

I know I saw, and tried to help, someone else with the same questions. At that time I think tried to get them to use Driver Sweeper 2.0 and really uninstall drivers and any leftovers.
So there should be another thread here, but maybe also on eVGA forum.
And it doesn't make sense, unless XP or even Apple's leftover Boot Camp drivers. So look for Driver Sweeper 2.0, works better; and there is a thread on evga for removing graphic driver and upgrade.
