SDDM + nvidia-340xx = black screen - Failed to create OpenGL context
When I'm trying to use SDDM I see nothing but black screen (I see sddm and Xorg running).
It used to work some time ago, but one day it stopped.

It's working for me, I'm on 340xx nvidia drivers and using sddm+plasma. I even have nouveau installed in parallel (blacklisted).
I don't know if it makes any difference, but I'm using the -ck variant of the kernel and the nvidia driver. libgl part is still the same though:

Dear all,
I have been reinstalling CS5 at least 10 times (without exagerating) and I keep having this error popping: AE error: AE_OpenGL: Failed to create OpenGL context! Turning off OpenGL. (5065 :: 0)
Every time I save it reappears and I don't have a clue what it is.
At first I thought it had something to do with my video card driver ATI HD radeon 5870 but everything seems fine and up to date there.
Any clue?
I would appreciate any help!!!
Thanks,
EtienneEvery time I save it reappears and I don't have a clue what it is.
Simply turn off OpenGL in the AE prefs.
everything seems fine and up to date there.
Mustn't mean anything. The latest drivers are not necessarily always the best/ most compatible ones and things like screen resolution sometimes have a strange influence as well... You could always try installing a different version, of course, but since AE realyl doesn't use OpenGL that much, that may be more trouble than it's worth...

Aperture 3 bug:Failed to create bitmap context color transform
*Aperture 3 error*: Aperture[2000] <Error> Failed to create bitmap context color transform
Aperture[2000] <Error> CGBitmapContextCreateWithData: failed to create delegate
Using Aperture 3.03 and Mac OS 10.6.4, all updates included.
This is the Console Message indicating the bug where Aperture 3.x cannot display in its viewer an image with an *embedded color profile*. These images (regardless whether tiff or jpegs) were displayed without problems in Aperture 2.x and do not pose any problems with Preview, Photoshop or Graphic Converter. If one converts the color profile to lets say ProPhoto or sRGB, Aperture works -
but this is no solution as colors are different then.
Is there any clue - based on the console message above - where the problem might be? The bug can be reproduced on different Mac Models with Aperture 3.x and vanishes with Aperture 2.x
is not dependenDear DLScreative,
please let us not fight over words - fact is, that with at least 2 totally different users and 4 different Mac computers Aperture 3.x behaves totally different (i.e. cannot display these images) than Aperture 2.x. The special color profile is embedded because 15.000 images were scanned with a Nikon LS5000
scanner. I don't know how to upload this color profile (which has been tested to be correct) to this
forum. Would you care if I sent you an E-Mail with the special profile attached so you could yourself
try and see?

[SOLVED] Nvidia 330m with driver 340xx: black screen
Hi, I've been battling with this since last upgrade and had to rollback to nouveau drivers.
When installing nvidia-340xx, it gets loaded correctly (checked with lsmod). It does also start the X server (checked Xorg.0.log and lightdm logs).
However, the screen stays black. I've tried several config changes and grub options to no avail. Anyone had this problem? Any inputs at all?
To be clear, I'm able to correctly install the driver: as a proof, I've installed 304xx and it worked fine (although it had some glitches when running games - nouveau is doing a bit better).
I've tried it on both linux and linux-lts, updating the initramfs accordingly. I've also tried nvidia-340xx-dkms, using nvidia-hook in mkinitcpio.conf - same result. Loaded, but black screen.
Thanks for any help/suggestion you can give.

This happens with my kernel configuration right after loading the NVidia module. Actually it sometimes happens more than once per boot. For some reason the NVidia module loaded into the stock kernel doesn't exhibit this problem.
Anyway, this is what causes the black screen. The kernel is then in an undefined state, i.e., Alt+PrtSc+R restores at least the response to CapsLock ;-) and other magic keys also work, but the display remains dead, i.e., no console, no framebuffer, nothing. -
Black Screen with Sound on OpenGL Apps (nVidia GeForce4 MX 440)
After a couple weeks of a non-stop search for a solution that has taken me through countless forums and Google queries, I've come to the realization that I need some help before I drive myself insane. I am running an old emachine T3065 with an AMD Athlon XP 2.167 MHz processor, 1024 MB of RAM, 160 GB HD, and a good old integrated (POS) nVidia NV18 GeForce4 MX 440 displayed on a widescreen Acer X191W LCD panel. I followed the instructions dictated in the nVidia installation wiki to a 'T', and can start GDM and log into Gnome without any conflict. Then when I attempt to launch a 3D OpenGL game or application, I'm stuck with a black screen where I can still hear sound (in fullscreen mode) or, in a few windowed programs such as foobillard and Google Earth, a three-dimensional shape without textures. Here's a couple screenshots:

As you can see, direct rendering is enabled. This left me fairly perplexed.
Issuing glxgears returned a smooth animation without error running at an average of 1750 frames per second. I then began toying with my xorg.conf settings by turning "RenderAccel" on and off, trying the different "NvAGP" ranges, etc. All without revealing a solution. Here is my current xorg.conf:

Perhaps the warnings pertaining to my monitor and ACPI are pertinent?
Is it possible that there is some kind of issue with my configuration and OpenGL textures since I can still see some non-textured 3D objects? Any help would be greatly appreciated, I am beyond frustrated with the matter. On a sidenote, in my latest issue of Linux Pro Magazine, I booted up a Sabayon live disc that game with the magazine and I had the same error except that a message blatantly said that I did not have OpenGL support. Anyway, I apologized if I rambled a bit and I hope that we'll be able to find a solution. Cheers!I guess I forgot to disclose that bit, haha. I'm currently using the 'nvidia-96xx' drivers which I thought were the correct set for the GeForce4 series. I recall reading that in a wiki somewhere, but I could be mistaken. I thought 'nvidia-71xx' was for GeForce2 and earlier.I really hope it is as simple as me installing the wrong driver.

I can't seem to get past the initial install screen. When I click install I receive what is shown in the screen shot. The error in question is "Failed to create process of SetupWpf.exe" This is what I get after i click install. The error above
that one "WinHttpReceiveresponse failed 80072ee7" is what I get when I tried to download the latest updates from the splash screen. It was on like update 44 of 56 when it failed but I am not sure I need to pursue that one. I cant even get the insall
going.
Phil BalderosI am also having the same issue..
I can start the sccm 2012 installation piror to installing SQL 2012 SP1. Once SQL installation is complete, and try to install sccm 2012 -> issue occur. Is this a sql issue, or a sccm 2012 issue.. I have download the SQL 2012 and SCCM 2012 FROM MS
twics.. I have rebuilt my lab twice already ...
Any help, not sure what step I am missing....
Hello Yuyut,
This issue is related to CM12 (not nessarly a widly known issue) perhaps something with the ISO. The copy I was using was from our MSDN subscription which kept failing. I downloaded it twice and still same issue. Since I am setting this up as a lab
for testing purposes I just ended up downloaded the 180 day evaluation and has worked for me so far. So again this is not related to SQL as I have noticed.
Thorsten did mention on this thred that I should check permissons of the account I was trying to install it from. That was not my issue but you could give that a look also.

Hi,
I've got a MacBook Pro 17inch, early 2009 - and since I've installed the latest Lion Updates my Mac has got strange problems with the graphic card(s).
The first time the screen kept black after I wanted to wake it after sleep mode. Restarting several times could not solve the issue. So I waited half an hour, tried starting it again and it was all fine - like nothing ever happened.
After a few days the black screen issue came up again - and I couldn't figure out, how to solve this (other than restarting and restarting and restarting ...). You can hear the typical Mac startsound, but then nothing happens.
I'm not able to see a pattern here, because sometimes my mac boots completely fine but randomly refuses to work at all.
Since today I can't activate the bigger NVIDIA-card in Lion - it's not even mentioned in the system informations (there is only the GeForce 9400M and no other card).
I would reinstall Lion, but I'm not sure, if this could crash the whole machine. Because, if this is a hardware defect, I'm afraid the Lion installation can't switch between both cards if necessary.
I searched on Google and there were several articles about a similar issue (with a black screen and no chance to get it work again) and some guys wrote, there was an issue with NIVIDIA cards from that time and that Apple extended the warranty up to three years for Macs with that problem.
My questions:
What can I do now?
Is there a chance of getting this problem fixed without paying 800 € for repair?
Would you think it's a hardware problem, or is it because of the latest update?
Thank you for your answers!fublador wrote:

1 - Take the computer to an Apple store or an AASP. Whichever is more convenient for you. Let the staff properly diagnose your issue.
2 - If you want to DIY - Do-It-Yourself Laptop Repair
Research YouTube's 'How To' video tutorials

3 - To check for hardware issues, boot up from your system disc that came with your computer and run the Hardware Test - Intel-based Macs: Using Apple Hardware Test -
Nvidia displaying black screen on boot
Hi everyone,
Yesterday I migrated to arch after 2 years on Ubuntu. I've wanted to move a long time ago but I moved now because I really needed the Nvidia driver to work (on Ubuntu it wasn't). I am doing research in my university which requires me to program in CUDA. I installed the nvidia and nvidia-utils packages successfully. I also ran nvidia-xconfig, installed CUDA and installed the samples that came with them. When I ran the `deviceQuery` that came with cuda to check the status of the drivers I used to get (on Ubuntu as well) that no devices exist. When I rebooted I saw a black screen. I switched to tty2 and killed spectrwm (my TWM) and ran `deviceQuery` and showed that I was indeed running a CUDA friendly GPU. So I'm really happy that CUDA finally worked.
There is something running in the background and there is a UI running but I can't see it. For example I went to a tty and ran vlc song.mp3 and heard the music.
However I would really love to have a UI instead of doing everything on a tty.
Some things I tried to do
Deleted the x config file or/and the 10-nvidia file and rebooting, but end up with an error: no screen detected (the reason I have the /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/10-nvidia.conf file)
I couldn't locate an error the X log

MacBook Pro June 2009 NVIDIA 9600 black screen of death
Hi there,
I am thinking of buying a new MacBook Pro June 2009 with dual graphics.
1.
As I read about the issues the MacBook Pro has in regards to graphics related to NVIDIA 9600 GT,
black screen of death, I would like to know if anything has changed regarding the NVIDIA 9600 GT
as it is still the same graphic card Apple is using for the latest MacBook Pro series.
Of course I know that Apple does not build it, however are there any informations that NVIDIA has performed changes on its graphic card that the widely discussed long term heat issues relating to the black screen of death will not appear in the latest model series?
2.
As I mainly use PS for picture editing I also would like to know how much this will conflict with the 9600 graphic card in the long term. Are there any users with black screen of death experience that were using PS as their main picture editing software where the issue appeared?
3.
Lastly I am aware that their are tools to manage fan speed behavior - as a workaround to cool down temperatures. Using this software would it void the warranty that is provided by Apple?
I thank you very much for all thoughts about the subject.Hi pictureswithPS, welcome to Apple Discussions!
1. I have an original late-2008 unibody MBP that was purchased a week after the introduction. I have never had a single "black screen of death" ever, and I do some gaming under OS X on my machine. The heat issues are, in my humble opinion, greatly exaggerated. Does the machine get warm? Yes. However, any computer with this much power in this thin of an enclosure is going to get warm. Mine has never crashed, frozen, black screened, etc. once.
2. I don't think PS is particularly intensive on the graphics card. It may use the graphics card, yes, but I don't think it will be quite as intensive as a 3D modeling application or 3D games. I would doubt you would ever run into problems anyway.
3. Lastly I am aware that their are tools to manage fan speed behavior - as a workaround to cool down temperatures. Using this software would it void the warranty that is provided by Apple?
No, it wouldn't likely void the warranty. However, if your fans die prematurely as a result of running them at high speeds for extended periods of time, I doubt Apple would be especially happy about replacing them. I do not use any 3rd party tools to manage my fans, and never will. It is simply not necessary.

Nvidia drivers black screen blink
I use nouveau drivers because at first install, nvidia ones didn't allow X to start at all. They work fine, compiz included.
Now, I thought on giving nvidia ones a new oportunity, and they seemed to work fine, except for a weird black screen "blink" from time to time: when I log in, I see desktop background, then screen turns black for a second, then desktop and compiz load. When I load some web sites with flash in it, black screen for a second. It even happened once at nautilus open o_0
I am pretty sure I correctly configured xorg.conf, 10-monitor.conf and 20-nvidia.conf, is this a common issue or did I missed something?
BTW, video card is a Geforce 8400GS.Maybe this is related.

SPNego fails: Error creating GSS context - java.lang.NullPointerException
Hi,
I have successfully configured SPNego logon to the first portal in our landscape, however, on the next portal I've got to the SPNego logon is failing.
When using the diagtool to analyse the problem tests 1-5 and 7 are passing successfully, however, test 6 is failing.
I am configuring against the following software components:
SAP J2EE - 7.00 SP13
Sun JDK version: 1.4.2_14
diagtool version 1.7.2
MS Active Directory is configured as the EP UME with resolution mode simple.
I believe the problem is in some way related to the authentication of the j2ee-<sid> user, however, I cannot narrow it down further. The password for this user has not changed since I generated the keytab file.
Any help greatly appreciated.
The following error is written to the diagtool trace file:

MBP Nvidia Bootcamp black screen XP install
I have encountered a problem I haven't been able to find mentioned anywhere on the web.
I have a Macbook Pro 3,1
15" LED backlit version
Geforce 8600M gfx card 256MB ram
2.4GHz intel
2GB ram
The problem I'm having is when installing xp (only for certain games and autocad) the screen is black.
the apple support website mentions this for late 2006 24" iMac's and offers a fix, but there is nothing for macbook Pro's
should it be safe to use the iMac MXM update on my MBP, or does anyone have any other suggestions?Just out of interest... was the screen completely black? or was there a very nearly black cursor blinking in the top left corner? I came across that last night when installing Arch onto an AMD Athlon 64 and 7300GS combo... I was using the free driver, and swapped to the nvidia-173xx driver and running nvidia-xconfig worked where Xorg -configure hadn't. The free driver was complaining about a module having a lock on my graphics card, or something similar (yeah, nice and vague ).
Although, being a relative newbie to Arch I could have just messed something up along the way. Tonight's project is to decide on and install a widow manager, so my X experience is more featured than just popping up a VLC client so I can watch a movie... look for some moronic posts in the newbie corner tomorrow -
MSI Nvidia NX6200 black screen problem
Hi,
i'm having this problem with my MSI Nvidia NX6200.
im using windows xp-service pack 3.
Everything was working fine, then, a few days ago i started the computer and i opened some programs, and suddenly, the monitor screen goes to black and the monitor goes off(like if i just shut down the computer), then after a few seconds, the monitor powers goes on, and a blue screen is shown with a message that said something like this:
""The computer needs to shut down.
The problem seems to be in the file: nv4_disp""
So i restarted windows several times, and everytime the same thing happens.
So i logged into windows in safe mode and unistalled the graphic card drivers, restarted windows,
and the system started correctly this time, but with no drivers.
so,
what can i do so the graphic card goes back to normal and with the drivers installed?
thanks.Quote from: Henry on 31-August-09, 07:17:04
Yes those are capacitors that are blown. If you know someone with halfway decent soldering skills you could get appropriate new caps and replace them. I know some people can do that and others can't, otherwise you need to replace the card. I did a Google search and found quite a few video cards of various manufacturers and models with blown caps like that. I get a feeling most of them were caused by overheating due to inadequate airflow through the case on cards with passive cooling and on cards with fan cooling, dead fans.
where can i get the new caps?
the capacitators started blowing after one year of buying the card, the five capacitators did not blew at the same time, they blew over a period of 5 or 6 months.
i did heard them blowing, but at the moment i did not knew what it was. it was a sound like a short circuit.
at the end, when the card stopped working, i took it out, and i knew it was that, and i saw them blown.
since i bought that card, i noticed that the power supply fan worked more and made more sound than with the old default card that i had when i bought the pc. -
SDDM, black screen with Optimus laptop setup
Hey all
After reading the NVIDIA Optimus and the SDDM wiki pages I am kind of at a loss as to how to proceed.
My problem is the following:
I have a Lenovo T540p and I am using the NVIDIA drivers. I have followed the Optimus setup guide succesfully and have setup my xorg.conf for the card that the laptop has. I am sure that it's successfull since if I start X manually I get into my desktop environment.
This is my xorg.conf

After looking around a bit I realized that the problem probably lies with the 2 xrandr calls that I have at the beginning of the .xinitrc. X server starts manually if I do it with startx since then the xrandr commands can be properly interpreted. But it seems that sddm needs to somehow run them before X starts.
Thankfully the Archwiki Optimus page mentions that for an Optimus setup to work with the SDDM login manager the xrandr calls need to be moved to this file: /usr/share/sddm/scripts/Xsetup
I did that and expected things to finally work but when rebooting I still get a black screen. As I said in the beginning if I switch to another tty and startx I get to my window manager and all is fine. The problem is with the X server that SDDM starts.
In case it is of any help this is my pstree of the SDDM process
