[SOLVED]Openbox Autostart not Autostarting

So I recently realized that my having openbox on both root and user were conflicting, and deleted the root files. However, now The commands in my autostart.sh fail to execute my startup programs, like conky, feh and tint2
Here is my autostart.sh:
# This shell script is run before Openbox launches.
# Environment variables set here are passed to the Openbox session.

Can someone tell me why this is occuring?

I don't use openbox currently, but I believe you should still have a fresh copy of autostart.sh in /etc/xdg/openbox to start over with. If not, here is a copy of mine:

    After the upgrade on May 14 2013 my autostart file no longer works. I tried renaming my autostart.sh to just autostart no luck. Well, since it worked fine even when called indirectly through openbox-autostart and since it's worked fine for months I figured it was fine. I am happy to post it though. Here you go:

    Stuff that needs sudo is in my sudoers as "username hostname NOPASSWD: item1,item2,etc,etc". Nothing too exciting. Seems like if there was suddenly something wrong with my autostart file at least some of the stuff would run either way though cause of "&". Pretty puzzling this issue is.

  • [SOLVED] Openbox Autostarting only some programs

    Ok, so I've tried searching the forums and either cannot find the one that answers my question or it doesn't exist.  Either way, I have my openbox autostart script set up like this:
    xcompmgr &
    nitrogen --restore &
    yakuake &
    cairo-dock &
    The file is saved as ~/.config/openbox/autostart.sh Only cairo dock and yakuake start up at the start of the openbox session.  The cairo dock has the black box around it from xcompmgr not being run but then if i manually start it in a terminal with "xcompmgr" then it goes away like it should.  So xcompmgr won't autostart and nitrogen won't restore either.  Nitrogen works if I manually do it after the openbox session has begun but only stays while i'm logged in, no restoring upon next login.  I'm trying to figure out if I have some syntax wrong?  I've tried separating the xcompmgr as far away from the cairo dock to give it more time to load but nothing...any help would be very appreciated.
    other info: I have no DE, just the dock, openbox and nitrogen for my desktop.

  • [solved] Openbox autostarting ncmpcpp in lxterminal on desktop2

    Hi!
    I wondered how to get this working...
    What I want: I want openbox to open an lxterminal with ncmpcpp running on desktop2
    What I tried so far:
    Editing .config/openbox/rc.xml
    <application name="ncmpcpp">
    <desktop>2</desktop>
    </application>
    and then I put lxterminal -e ncmpcpp & in my autostart.sh
    Clearly this did not work, since autostart starts lxterminal and not ncmpcpp.
    Ok, so I tried to see if the <application> settings in rc.xml can be fooled by:
    - ln -s lxterminal terminalncmpcpp
    <application name="terminalncmpcpp">
    <desktop>2</desktop>
    </application>
    and putting terminalncmpcpp -e ncmpcpp & in the autostart.sh
    Sadly this didn't work too.
    Is there a way to get this to work?
    Thanks,
    zip1100

    ctrl wrote: Maybe you can change the name of a specific lxterminal (i.e. with urxvt: "urxvt -name myterm").
    That did the trick for me. Unfortunately not with lxtermial (it looks like it has no -name parameter)  but with urxvt.
    Thanks!

  • [SOLVED] tilda won't work with openbox autostart

    I tried to start tilda with ~/.config/openbox/autostart. I can see tilda among the processes but pulldown key has no effect.
    Tilda works when starting from terminal with the following error messages:
    tilda:28274): Gtk-WARNING **: Unable to locate theme engine in module_path: "clearlooks",
    (tilda:28274): Gdk-CRITICAL **: IA__gdk_drawable_get_display: assertion `GDK_IS_DRAWABLE (drawable)' failed
    (tilda:28274): Gdk-CRITICAL **: _gdk_x11_window_get_toplevel: assertion `GDK_IS_WINDOW (window)' failed
    (tilda:28274): Gdk-WARNING **: gdk_window_set_user_time called on non-toplevel
    FYI: I've recently removed gnome shell from my system and installed openbox. Maybe something missing? Any suggestion?

    I installed the package, restarted X but now tilda doesn't start from terminal either.

  • Openbox Autostart (What is starting Guake?)

    I just commented out my entry for guake in ~/.config/openbox/autostart because there were two entries there in tint2.  I read the wiki, and it does mention /etc/xdg/autostart/ as a handy place to check, but there was no listing for guake in that directory.  So my question is, what exactly is starting guake?
    ~/.config/openbox/autostart:
    ## Autostart File ##
    ##xcompmgr (compositor)
    #(sleep 1s && xcompmgr) &
    #not using xcompmg because in OB, it definitely introduces screen tearing
    ##compton (compositor)
    #(sleep 1s && compton) & #what I was using. Tearing problems
    (sleep 1s && compton -bfzcCG --backend glx --vsync opengl-swc --paint-on-overlay -D5 -r6 -l-8 -t-8) & #This did solve tearing problem, but may make bl2 unplayable. #actually, it didn't effect bl2.
    ##Screensaver
    (sleep 1s && xscreensaver -no-splash) &
    ##guake dropdown terminal
    #(sleep 1s && guake) & #I disabled this because their were two entries in openbox for guake in tint2. I don't know what is starting guake now.
    ##tint2 panel
    (sleep 1s && tint2) &
    ##Background
    (sleep 1s && nitrogen --restore) &
    ##numlock
    (sleep 1s && numlockx) &
    ##Mount stuff automatically
    (sleep 7s && udiskie --tray) &
    ##start conky
    #conky -c /home/convergence/.conkyrc #this messes everything up!
    ## NetworkManager Frontend
    #(sleep 7s && nm-applet) &
    Here is a thread that seemed relevant:  https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=114803
    I used the command " ps -o user,pid,ppid,command -ax" found in this thread to find out what the parent PID is of guake, and it was bash, started by my current user.  That's not very helpful!
    Edit:  As you can see, I take notes in my own config files so that I can remember why I made the changes that I did.  I edited this entry post because apparently one of my notes had some foul language.

    @dodo3773:  I think you nailed it. I verified the existence of /usr/share/dbus-1/services/org.guake.Guake.service. I honestly don't understand Dbus and how it relates to systemd.  I'll read this:  http://www.freedesktop.org/wiki/IntroductionToDBus/ when I get a chance.    I switched from windows to Linux a long time ago.  I learned quite a bit back then, but then stopped learning (I'm not in a tech field), and Linux kept evolving.  I'm a total freakin n00b.
    @drcouzelis:  I don't use startx.  I use KDM because I need to share my computer with my wife, and I think she would have an anxiety attack if she was confronted with a command line.
    @Trilby: I think that xinitrc is only parsed if X is started manually.  I use a DM (a necessity).  PS, should I mark this solved?  I haven't tested it yet (because I don't know how), but I suspect that Dodo3773 was correct
    Thanks everyone for responding.

  • [solved] XBMC - autostart torrent program in the background?

    I'm back with more xbmc questions and since 99% of the users at xbmc use *buntu and their debian startup scripts, I'm going to bug you guys.
    I've finally got a dedicated htpc that boots directly to xbmc without even bothering with a WM.
    Now, I'm hoping to get a torrent program (with rss functionality) to boot at startup as well as having access to some kind of gui to check up on the torrents occasionally.
    I'm mostly looking at deluge since it's what I know and the wife wants some kind of gui so she can add torrents and check up on stuff too.  (Hey, we're a windows free household but not GUI free, we're not that geeky)
    I've also looked a bit at rtorrent + flexrss + some webgui of some kind.
    I'm not really looking to start a thread with a hundred posts saying to try: transmission, ktorrent, deluge, rtorrent, vuze, utorrent+wine, etc.  I'm more interested in finding out how to get the specific functionality out of the software.
    That being said, if you can help me accomplish what I'm aiming for I don't give a damn what torrent program I'm using.
    Here's what I need:
    1) Torrent program must have rss functionality
    2) I need a script (or the ability) to get it to boot at startup without a WM or DE
    2a) I can boot a WM if needed (openbox)
    3) i need it to run in the background while XBMC is fullscreen and doing it's thing
    4) Prefer access to either standard gui or web gui so I can check up on the torrents occasionaly
    5) Can I have a pony?
    Thanks guys!

    Actually I was just thinking about it and I may be overcomplicating things (like usual)
    I may just change my current setup to boot directly into openbox and autostart xbmc fullscreen.
    If I do that, then I can autostart my torrent program just like I would any other program in openbox.
    Doing so should allow xbmc to autostart fullscreen while allowing deluge to autostart in the background.
    My current setup looks like this:
    - mingetty to autologin user
    - .bashrc runs "startx"
    - .xinitrc runs "/usr/bin/xbmc --standalone"
    I'm going to try this out to see how it works:
    - mingetty
    - .bashrc runs "startx"
    - .xinitrc runs "exec openbox-session"
    - .config/openbox/autostart.sh runs "/usr/bin/xbmc --standalone &" and "(sleep 2 && deluge) &"
    I'm still a bit new to openbox though, we'll see.
    Thoughts?

    Hey guys, thanks for the quick response!
    Openbox-menu comes from AUR and the menu.xml is a copy of my Archbang installation. And yes, openbox-menu works like a charm on Archbang. So what am I missing?

  • Gnome, openbox & autostart.sh

    I have gnome running with openbox, and i login via GDM, however i can't for the life of me get xcompmgr to start when i login.
    my ~/.config/openbox/autostart.sh file looks like this:
    (sleep 5 && /usr/bin/xcompmgr -c) &
    I've tried using startx with openbox-gnome-session in my .xinitrc but again, still no luck
    is anyone having/had success with a similar setup cos this is driving me up the wall! I bet it's a really simple issue too which will make me feel extra stupid

    jacko wrote:U have to load it first as the other guy said, but there is a way to force it by making something else pause and wait a few seconds so that script can have time to start.
    Yes, something like
    xcompmgr -c
    sleep 5 && $whatever_you_want_to_run_after
    or perhaps you'll have to increment the sleep time, some programs, like pypanel, start too fast, even before X or openbox themselves, and so they get closed.

  • [SOLVED] Openbox+Thunar, how to show usb devices in thunar?

    Hi.  I've been running a pretty standard Xfce environment for a while.  When I plug in a usb drive, I get a new item pop up in the "DEVICES" section of the left panel in thunar (note, it doesn't automount the device, it just shows that it's there and only mounts it when I click on it...I like this behaviour).
    Now, I'm setting up an even lighter-weight environment, just openbox and tint2 with thunar as the file manager.  But when I'm logged into the openbox environment, I don't get the item in the "DEVICES" section in thunar (but it still works fine in xfce).
    If it run thunar from the command line and plug in a usb drive I get this message in the terminal
    (thunar:21205): thunar-WARNING **: Failed to launch the volume manager (Failed to execute child process "thunar-volman" (No such file or directory)), make sure you have the "thunar-volman" package installed.
    I don't see why I would need thunar-volman if it works fine in xfce.  If I install thunar-volman and do the same, I get this message
    thunar-volman: Unsupported USB device type.
    thunar-volman: Unsupported USB device type.
    thunar-volman: Unknown block device type.
    So I'm wondering if maybe there is a daemon that is autostarted during an xfce session that makes thunar probe for devices to be plugged in or something like that.  Why does it work in an xfce session, but not in an openbox session?

    Thanks for your replies.
    henk:  I tried installing polkit-gnome and creating the rule as per the wiki, but it didn't work.  Volume detection seems to work fine in xfce without this package.
    jv2112:  I added udiskie to .config/openbox/autostart and it seems to work.  I've had problems with udiskie in the past; it seemed to have some trouble unmounting the drives properly after a write as I would find that the newly written files were corrupt.  But it seems to be working fine.
    I'll mark this as solved, but I'm still curious as to how xfce-thunar is mounting the usb devices.
    One clue is that with udiskie, devices get mounted to /media, whereas in xfce they get mounted to /var/run/media/username/ (or something like that).

  • [SOLVED] OpenBox with XP in VirtualBox

    Hi All
    I'm hoping someone has an answer to this one. I'm in the process of switching from Gnome 3 to OpenBox. I'm almost there except for getting VirtualBox to work correctly in seamless mode.
    If I login to Gnome 3 then seamless virtualbox works brilliantly but in openBox I get a sort of screen lag as though the graphics driver is running incredibly slow. VirtualBox works fine when it's not in seamless mode though.
    Contents of .config/openbox/autostart:
    xcompmgr &
    # Restore wallpaper
    nitrogen --restore &
    # Start Devilspie to alter windows
    devilspie -a &
    # Start Main Panel
    tint2 &
    EDIT: I use Docky as a program launcher hence the need for xcompmgr. Devilspie I use to move NetBeans to the development desktop.
    Thanks
    Rich

    Unfortunately I don't think either xcompmgr or cairo-compmgr will work with virtualbox seamless mode.  I think seamless mode works decently with compiz and kwin, though in the past these have had problems as well. Seamless and compositing just don't mix well and unfortunately I doubt oracle cares about making it work with xcompmgr, which isn't even being developed anymore, so no fix likely to come from that end either.
    You could either use docky uncomposited, it still works, just not as pretty, use another dock, or use compiz as your window manger instead of openbox.
    Also you can move an application to a specific dektop in openbox rc.xml with
    <application class="the class of the app you want to move*">
       <desktop>2</desktop>
    </application>
    So you maybe you don't need to run Devilspie, if you use compiz it also has features to control where applications are placed. There are also more application placement variables in openbox then just my above example.

  • [SOLVED] OpenBox - Transparency and Virtual Desktop Switcher

    Hi All
    I've just recently, in the last 2 days, switched from Gnome 3.2 to Openbox. I've never really used it before except for a short period on #! as I recall. I've a couple of problems I don't seem to be able to find any answers to and hopefully someone on here already knows how:
    1) I'm using Guake dropdown terminal - I don't mind switching to any other terminal if necessary. I can't get transparency to work correctly with it though. I've installed the following to try to resolve the issue:
    Cairo Composite Manager
    transset-df
    If I issue the command:
    transset-df -n 'Guake!' &
    the Guake terminal sets to transparent which is great. However, as soon as the window retracts and I call it back again the transparency has switched off.
    2) I've installed tint2 and it's pretty good. Problem is I can't find a way to get a virtual desktop switcher. Again, this choice isn't cast in stone, I'm quite happy to change to any other application, or set of applications, to achieve the following:
    Virtual Desktop Switcher - i like the way pypanel does this actually. I'm happy enough with the mouse wheel switching desktops but I'd like some indication of which desktop I'm on.
    Date and Time with a calendar - I've got Orca working quite well on a click on the clock for the calendar.
    I would have thought this was pretty simple to resolve really, it's just that i don't know Openbox that well yet and I could use some advice on the best way to resolve the issues.
    Thanks in advance

    I've actually managed to resolve the transparency issue as well.
    sudo pacman -S devilspie xcompmgr transset-df
    Then in .config/openbox/autostart:
    # Start Composite Manager
    xcompmgr &
    # Start Devilspie to alter windows
    devilspie -a &
    # Start Main Panel
    tint2 &
    Finally, create a file in .devilspie called guake.ds with the following content:
    (if
    (is (window_name) "guake.py" )
    (begin
    (spawn_sync (str "transset-df -i " (window_xid) " 0.5") )

  • I can't send out email using my iPhone4. I tried to follow the step provided to solve but still not working. What should I do?

    Contact your mail provider and get the CORRECT settings for the outgoing server to set up on your phone.
