[SOLVED] Pacman cleanup - safe to remove these packages?
Hi
I'm cleaning up a bit, and saw some gnome stuff I diden't want.. upon doing pacman -Rns gnome-disk-utility gvfs (gnome-disk-u depends on this) libgnome I get the following:
[michael@swamp ~]$ pacman -Rns gnome-disk-utility gvfs libgnome
checking dependencies...
Remove (17): libgnome-2.32.0-1 libcanberra-0.25-1 libbonobo-2.32.0-1
gnome-vfs-2.24.4-1 gnome-mime-data-2.18.0-4 gvfs-1.6.5-2
libsoup-gnome-2.32.0-1 libproxy-0.4.6-2 libcdio-0.82-1 libcddb-1.3.2-2
gnome-disk-utility-2.32.0-2 libgnome-keyring-2.32.0-1 udisks-1.0.1-5
sg3_utils-1.29-1 parted-2.3-1 libatasmart-0.17-1 libunique-1.1.6-3
Total Removed Size: 45.89 MB
Do you want to remove these packages? [Y/n]
Stuff like udisks and libatasmart and parted sounds troublesom to me. Is it safe to hit Y?
I shouldn't have any gnome applications installed.
Thanks

I'm no expert but i wouldn't uninstall libgnome...
What is the specific app you want to uninstall?
If you want to uninstall an application you just have to type:
pacman -Rcs package_name
And let pacman do the rest.
You can specify the dependencies in the command for more specific reasons...
You can also do this:
pacman -Qdt
to see the packages that are installed, but they are no requiered by other installed packages.
That cleans the system a bit.
Good Luck!

[solved] pacman -Syy and -Syu work, but packages won't install
Hello, everyone. I'm really new to Arch, but I did search all over Google and the forums and couldn't find an answer to this, so I thought I'd ask the forums.
I just installed Arch, and I'm trying to install sudo.
When I run pacman -S sudo, I get:
sudo package not found, searching for group...
error: 'sudo': not found in syncdb
However, when I run pacman -Syy, I get:
::Synchronizing package databases...
error: failed retrieving file 'core.db.tar.gz' from mirrors.kernel.org: File unavailable (e.g., file not found, no access)
...(other similar errors from other mirrors)
core 4.1K 43.7K/s 00:00:00 [##########] 100%
...(same for extra and community)
(Sorry I didn't copy the entire output out, I'm not connected to the internet on the Arch computer, so I'm typing this by hand on another one. I tried a bunch of mirrors earlier, and only one mirror actually works: the Arch one, which as a download cap.)
So my package databases are getting updated, but somehow pacman isn't recognizing them or something.
I updated pacman to see if that would work.
pacman -V
Pacman v3.3.3 - libalpm v4.0.3
It didn't.
I'm running 2.6.33-ARCH according to lib/modules.
I haven't changed my etc/pacman.conf. [core] and its Include, [extra] and its Include, and [community] and its Include are all uncommented. No packages are ignored.
My etc/pacman.d/mirrorlist was updated from the Arch Mirror Generator. I uncommented everything in United States.
I have internet set up, and I've tried taking down wlan0 and putting it back up. iwconfig shows that wlan0 works and is connected, and I'm pinging google.com successfully, so I know internet works.
Thanks in advance for any help, and please let me know if I'm missing any information. I tried to be thorough.

[SOLVED] Pacman trying to install 64-bit packages on 32-bit system
I was upgrading my Arch Linux i686 install, and I got the following error:
error: The mirror 'http://mirror.rit.edu/archlinux/$repo/os/$arch' contains the $arch variable, but no Architecture is defined.
I added Architecture = i686 to /etc/pacman.conf under [options], and when I run pacman -Syu, I get these errors:
error: failed to prepare transaction (package architecture is not valid)
:: package clucene-2.3.3.4-2-x86_64 does not have a valid architecture
:: package filezilla-3.5.3-1-x86_64 does not have a valid architecture
:: package lshw-B.02.16-1-x86_64 does not have a valid architecture
:: package yajl-2.0.4-1-x86_64 does not have a valid architecture
Why is pacman trying to install x86_64 packages on my i686 system?

[SOLVED] pacman is unable to remove openbox
I installed openbox yesterday to try it out and now when I try to remove it by writing
sudo pacman -Rns openbox
I get the following error,

I've tried updating my mirrorlist with reflector, also tried pacman -Syyu but I keep getting the same error again and again. Where did I go wrong?

Can I remove these packages after installation?
Hi,
I checked packages installed on my laptop. The followings are explicitly installed but I do not know whether they are useful to me. So I am wondering whether I can remove them without affecting my work. Can anyone give me some advices?
xfsprogs 2.10.1-1
mlocate 0.21-1
mdadm 2.6.7-1
mailx 8.1.1-5
lvm2 2.02.43-1
lzo2 2.02-3
licenses 2.4-1
jfsutils 1.1.13-1
gettext 0.17-2
dmapi 2.2.8-3
dash 0.5.4-4
cpio 2.9-3
cryptsetup 1.0.6-2cpio might me needed to update the kernel, at least the name sounds familiar. I would definitely remove mlocate or at least disable the cron job, so far the only use I have for it is to slowdown my system (a lot).
xfsprogs: not needed if you don't use xfs file systems
mlocate: I dont like, chmod -x on the cron job, didn't remove it though
mdadm: no idea of what it does
mailx: no idea of what it does
lvm2: not needed if you don't use lvm volumes
lzo2: I think is a compression/decompression utility, I would keep it
licenses: no idea of what it does
jfsutils: not needed if you don't use jfs file systems
gettext: no idea of what it does
dmapi: no idea of what it does
dash: no idea of what it does
cpio: I believe it is needed to update the kernel
cryptsetup: no idea of what it does
When in doubt, don't remove things because they might be needed later :d -
[SOLVED] pacman keeps trying to install 32bit packages on my 64bit OS
Hi,
I have just installed Arch linux first time (ISO as of 01 Nov). My OS should be 64bit (my hw is 64bit) but pacman fails on any package I try to install.
Example
$ pacman -S grub
error: failed to prepare transaction (package architecture is not valid)
:: package grub-1:2.02.beta2-5-i686 does not have a valid architecture
So it tries to install 32bit package (and fails), but why?
My system:
$ uname -a
Linux archiso 3.17.1-1-ARCH #1 SMP PREEMPT Wed Oct 15 15:04:35 CEST 2014 x86_64 GNU/Linux
I checked /etc/pacman.conf:
Architecture = auto
and /etc/pacman.d/mirrorlist (the first three entries are shown; all of the mirrors have the same format):
## Score: 0.3, Germany
Server = http://mirror.gnomus.de/$repo/os/$arch
## Score: 0.3, France
Server = http://archlinux.polymorf.fr/$repo/os/$arch
## Score: 0.5, Netherlands
Server = http://ftp.nluug.nl/os/Linux/distr/archlinux/$repo/os/$arch
And it is not only grub, it is any package (e.g. gamin, lxde)

[SOLVED]Pacman try to install old version packages which not exists
When I tried to install django, pacman reported 404 error.
And I found that pacman tried to install django-1.4.3-1 while the resposity I used only has django-1.4.4-1
I've deleted all resposities except
Server = http://mirrors.163.com/archlinux/$repo/os/$arch
And then I tried
pacman -Syy
but it seems useless.

I found the reason now...
Because the 163.com's repository does not have django..
I add

to the first and then
pacman -Syy
At last, I can install django now..
I think this topic can be marked as SOLVED. Should I mark it or the administrator will do this?(In fact I do not know how to mark it.:))
You shouldn't use ftp.archlinux.org, it's throttled. Use another mirror instead.
I just use ftp.archlinux.org occacionally to fix the problem.
Sometimes I don't want to wait the mirror updating itself. -

Last edited by mpz (2012-10-02 12:50:40)Glibc is a very basic part of the system on which *many* (most?) other programs and tools rely. Glibc provides shared libraries that are used by nearly every program - if you've ever looked at any C code, near the top you'll see lines like "#include <stdlib.h>" and "#include <stdio.h>", these header files are provided by glibc. The header files are not necessary for your computer to run (but are to compile anything new), but the libraries that are referred to by those headers are required. If glibc is gone, those shared library files are gone. Without these basic shared libraries, only statically linked binaries, or programs that don't require these very fundamental libraries can run. As nothing is statically linked (by default) in arch, the absence of glibc results in a severely handicapt system. If you are curious, you can google around on "C standard libraries" and "dynamic linking".
But all that is rather 'academic'. To fix your system follow techryda's advice. Also see the wiki page on chroot, or the many other threads of other users who found creative ways of botching the glibc update. Simply tryng to copy glibc files over would almost certainly lead to a whole new set of headaches - but a little reading of the appropriate docs should make this relatively easy to fix with a live media, chroot, and pacman. -

I'm stumped. Any ideas?

If i try the previous Rsu version again i get the same as the first example I showed.
Do you think it's poosible i have to re-install kdemod first then proceed to uninstall everything?

Is it safe to remove multiple hostname.mboxlist.date directories
Hi,
I have several hostname.mboxlist.date directories besides mboxlist directory in server_root/msgconf/store directoryoccupying much space. Can anybuddy let me know is it safe to remove these directories ? As its my production server, so I can't take any risk of data/db corruption.
Thanks in advance.I remember answering this for you before.
How old are these? Recent?
Messaging Server does snapshot your database, and you can set how often, and how many to keep.
If you have OLD files, likely Messaging Server didn't create 'em. -
Safe to remove firmware files?
Hello All,
I have had the two recent firmware updates installed (SMC, EFI) and all went well. I now see the two files under the Utilities folder:
1. MacBook Pro SMC Firmware Update
2. MacBook Pro EFI Firmware Update
It is safe to remove these two files I suppose?
Thanks! It is safe to remove these two files I suppose?
Correct. Unless a new logic board is installed, they no longer serve any purpose.

[SOLVED] Pacman: cant install, remove, update packages
I'm new to Arch, and yes I've read the Wiki and the sticky post "pacman error: FILENAME exists in filesystem".
I can't install or update packages. Just synced the local database. I want to install the package "mc", so I ran:
pacman -S mc
All required packages were downloaded but then I got lots of:
[package-name]: /path/to/file exists in file system
I tried to remove that package but it says:
loading package data...
error: '[package-name]': could not find or read package
I'm totally confused!
