[Solved] Pacman: is there an option to only download updates

Hello,
I cannot find a way to only download packages and install them later. My use case: I have a laptop and a fast connexion at university and I would like to download the packages there. Since I am working, downloading is okay, but installing requires more computing power and regurlarly freezes my machine, which I'd like to avoid. I would like to run the installing part later, say at home for instance.
The manual indicates -w to be an option, but when I run
# pacman -Sw
I get
error: no target specified
as if I must indicate a package name.
I expected to be able to run
pacman -Syw
at work, and then
pacman -Su
at home.
Is there an option hidden in one of my config files preventing me to do this? Or another way to do it?

Is there a way to only download quicktime 7.1.3 and not 7.1.6?

Quicktime 7.1.6 is not compatible with another program I need to use and iTunes says it needs at least 7.1.3 to work. Is there a way I can download that version and not the newer one?

After searching Apple Downloads, the only other version 7 I could find was 7.1.5. Would that help you at all?

[SOLVED]pacman -Sf zim makes arch read-only filesystem

Last night I was trying to install zim, it looks like there were a couple packages which weren't properly installed before. I googled the error I received and found somewhere on the forum the tip to use
pacman -Sf package
I ran the command and it installed some sort of new kernel, fstab, something with python, and zim of course. While it was installing the packages I noticed it moved a couple files around and I'm not quite sure what it all did. anyway when I booted arch this morning it didn't quite make it to gdm, so I quickly booted into ubuntu, mounted my arch partition changed the inittab to boot to init 3. I then noticed that it mounted the arch / as read-only, I looked around a bit seems like my /etc/fstab was moved to /etc/fstab.pacorig. Now before I start playing around and maybe break things more than they are, anyone have a tip about how to figure out everything that was changed?
I also noticed that I could login as root without having to use a password which I don't like at all, which is a little scary.

First things first; using the -f/--force flag with pacman is the absolute last resort, when everything else fails, and when you know exactly what you're doing. Using it just because you found a tip on the forum, and clearly without thinking about the potential consequences, is just asking for trouble - and you've got it.
To fix: your pacman log will tall you what packages were installed, and also has a record of any install-time messages. Comb through that, and work out how to revert the major issues.

The only known way to make it work on an external drive is by first installing Windows onto an internal drive, then cloning the install to an external Thunderbolt drive. Thunderbolt is seen as an extension of the internal bus, so Windows doesn't see it as an external device.

Why is there not an option to only print form data in Adobe XI?

I have created a form in Adobe Acrobat XI Pro and saved it. Then I want to open it in Adobe Reader, fill it in and then only print the form data but there is not an option to only print form data in Adobe Reader XI. Basically you need to place the file's contents on a non-printing layer. Try this:
Create a new blank file and open the Layers panel on the left.
Click the Options button and select Import As Layer.
Select your pre-existing PDF file (maybe save a copy of it without the form fields first and use that version).
Right-click the layer you created and select Properties. Change the layer's Print option to "Never Prints".
Now copy the fields from the other file and place them in their correct location on the page.
Save the file and you have a file that can be used to print only the form fields data, even in Reader.
This process can be automated, by the way, but that would require a script.

Authorizations: On Business Partner, there is no "read only" option

I am trying to allow users to see a Business Partner (for example, when creating a sales order, they should be able to search for a customer and to see details about it), but I don't want them to be able to create or update a Business partner.
In SBO, there is no option "Read only" fro Business partner.
We have "addind a business partner"               No or Full authorization
and         "Business partner type" Customers No or Full authorization
Do you have a solution for me ?

Thats correct if you give ADD / UPDATE it applies to both Customers and Vendors.
There is no setting by BP type, it applies for all BP's.
I did not understand this "I didn't see that there is an authorization at "chapter" level..."
In the Authorization window when you expand Business Partners you would see

iOS requirements are stated on the app page before purchase.
If you want a refund, request one from iTunes customer support.

[SOLVED] pacman mirror problems

It seems that my preferred mirror (mirror.csclub.uwaterloo.ca) is down, so I commented it out of /etc/pacman.d/mirrorlist. However, pacman still insists on trying to download from this mirror EVERY TIME it tries to install or update a package
So each package takes about 15 seconds to say:
error: failed retrieving file 'gcc-4.5.0-1-x86_64.pkg.tar.xz' from mirror.csclub.uwaterloo.ca: Connection timed out
before trying another mirror.
Is there an option to make sure pacman is using the mirrors specified in the mirrorlist, or to not use a certain mirror? I can't find anything in the man page or wiki.

Shot in the dark but I had a similar problem. The way I fixed it (and I'm still not sure why it worked) but I manually entered my DNS servers into my network manager applet. I don't know if you use Gnome, KDE, or whatever (I use KDE), but that worked for some reason. Maybe you could try it.
Thanks for the response, yes I'm using Gnome and networkmanager applet 0.8. I'm not too sure what you mean by entering the DNS server in the network manager applet. Are you suggesting that I enter my ip address (the one assigned to me by my ISP) into the BSSID or MAC address field? Those are the only two fields that I see when I select my connection and click edit in the network manager applet, unless I go to the security settings or one of the IPv tabs.
I was able to update my system after uncommenting the kernel.org mirror, so maybe it is the mirror.csclub.uwaterloo.ca. Too bad mirrors don't have a blog or something to post news/status updates on it could prove helpful when problems like this occur. Then again that would mean more maintenance for them and I can understand why it might be considered too much work. I guess https://www.archlinux.de/?page=MirrorStatus works good enough.

[SOLVED] Pacman is very slow inside VirtualBox

Hello everyone, I've used Arch Linux for a while now and I never had any serious issue. I've been testing Arch inside VirtualBox recently and it installs fine and all that but when I try to update the system, updating repos is very slow, once the repos are up-to-date, pacman offers the latest packages to download very fast and waits for me to press 'y'. Once I do press 'y', it downloads the packages very slow.
I have a 15 Mbps connection (goes up to 30
Mbps when bandwidth os available).
I'm using a mirror close to
My state NY (rit, umoss, vt, or even gatech).
The /etc/rc.conf and /etc/hosts have the same hostname.
I've tried to test in VMware server but there was a problem with vmware. Fedora 13 also updates really slow as well. Debian and Ubuntu don't have a problem.
I have Arch on my flash drive and I booted it up on my machine and pacman works much faster when not inside the VM. The weird thing is that when I was using and older version of VirtualBox, everything was working great, which makes me think that it's a Virtualbox but.. but then why is Debian working fine but Fedora and Arch slow?
Any suggestions?

Alright, since no one has posted, I'm going to assume no one knows how to fix this yet.
I've been messing around for the last couple of days, and I was looking into the network options that VirtualBox has.
From all the options:
NAT
Bridged Networking
Internal Networking
Host-Only Networking
NAT and Bridged Networking seem to make the most sense, but the problem was that NAT requests a new IP from the router and uses it's own driver to do the networking, I saw this as that the VirtualBox NAT driver might be messing up how the traffic flows (including the speed) in Arch Linux and possibly in Linux in general.
For Bridged Networking, the VM uses the physical adapter of the host, and that shot me right away. I told myself, why use an intermediate driver to communicate with the router if I can use the physical adapter directly and pull information faster. At the point my statement was theoretical, but once I booted up Arch Linux and tried it... the slowness was gone. Pacman now updates repos and downloads packages much faster. Fedora 13 in the VM also works much faster as well, not only for updating repos and downloading packages, but also for web browsing within the VM.
I think that there might either be a bug or performance issue that's affecting the NAT driver in VirtualBox version 3.2.8 r64453, because you do recall I said that I was using the NAT driver in an older version of VirtualBox and it wasn't slow.
I hope this can help someone in the future.

[SOLVED] Pacman leaving system in inconsistent state

Today I made an update to my system and wanted to reboot. Since then I am having issues to no end.
To begin with, I had a custom kernel but it became hard to maintain it so I wanted to drop it in favor of a much newer default kernel. So I removed my kernel with pacman and updated the default one. Then I made sure that all traces of the custom kernel were removed and re-ran mkinitcpio and grub-mkconfig.
Afterwards, I rebooted but gut stuck entering by LUKS passphrase, because it would not accept any input. Here you have to know I was using Plymouth which already fell back to its text-mode (so I assume, the nice lock and GUI were gone). I booted from a CD, chrooted and removed plymouth and its hooks and re-installed the encrypt hook. Upon regenerating the image, it complained libgcrypt.20.so or something was missing. I checked and while pacman -Ql libgcrypt said there should be such a file, there actually wasn't (only in lib32 there was this file, and in lib there was an older version).
So I reinstalled the package and the file was there. Then I wanted to start vim and it complained some libraries were missing. I checked and again same behavior. So reinstalled all packages. This did not help. Again, manual install of those packages. Now I rebooted.
The system started, I could enter my passphrase and was automatically logged in. However, my window manager displayed several errors (among others, ACPI problems) and the screen froze. Reboot, start X as root, screen freezes as well (no WM set up here). I checked /var/log/Xorg.0.log and it is empty as is my .xlog which logs the stdout in case of my user.
I then reinstalled my graphics- and input-drivers. I also removed some packages where pacman claimed they were no longer needed (I know, risky). Now I couldn't even log in to a shell, even as root, login just said something about an Incorrect Login oder something?
So I booted from CD again, chrooted and reinstalled those packages I removed. And here comes the major suprise: My stdout gets overwhelmed with "exists in filesystem". It literally took several seconds to run through. So it seems pacman never removed those files properly.
I checked pacman.log, dmesg, journalctl and anything else I could think of but I only found possible symptoms (like VBox not finding modules), no cause.
Some additional info:
The system is a laptop with an SSD that is encrypted and uses LVM with an ext4 filesystem on all partitions (root, home, usr, var). I know usr is not such a good idea, but I learned that too late...
The installed graphics card is a generic intel card with an additional nVidia card accessible via Optimus (if that's relevant).
I have no idea what could possibly have gone wrong and would love if anyone could provide any suggestion on how to fix it or find the cause of it.
Last note: The initial problem was that it always took multiple seconds to connect to something via network. However I assumed that is because of my outdated kernel but updated libraries that require a newer kernel. Seems I was wrong...

Sorry for my late reply. Since the problem had to be fixed fast, I just reinstalled arch. I created a backup and so it was much quicker to reinstall than to unwrap this issue.
Still, concerning the kernel version: It was just some patches to add real multi-threading to luks/dm-crypt.
And during installation, I found that my usr directory had a lot of packages directories (possibly w/ content) even when the actual usr partition was not mounted. I found that I did not have the usr hook in mkinitcpio and must say, I possibly broke it myself by mounting it for my chroot environ. So this may be the cause of the extended issues.
So what likely happened here was that I broke my system by sometimes exeuting pacman with separately mounted /usr and sometimes without. This still doesn't explain the original issue but maybe a simple live CD boot & update/upgrade would have solved that. Thank you all for your responses and your effort and sorry this thread wasn't of much use to anyone.

Hi,
This is rather a nuissance than an actual problem, but maybe someone knows what i did wrong:
I manually compiled evas-svn doing a makepackage with the pkgbuild from aur. Since its an svn package the versioning is taken from the svn revision. Evas is not the only svn package i manually compiled, actually i did so with all the e17 packages.
Now every time i do a pacman -Su it wants to replace my package with the older one from [community].
Here's a screenshot of pacman -Qs output before and after such an update. The versioning of the manually compiled package seems alright to me, it should not be selected for updating. And as mentioned, other packages - versioned following the same scheme - are not suggested for updating.
Now how can i get rid of that? I dont want to exclude it from updating (i would just forget to remove that as soon as theres really newer packages...and e17 tends not to work anymore in such a case). Also I would like to know what i did wrong
