Film Transfer question

Re: 16mm film transfer
Hello;
I have some vintage 16mm film that I would like to have transfered to an editable format. If I work in FinalCutPro what format should the 16mm film be transfered too so that it can be edited?
Any suggestions for a quality-reasonably priced -Manhattan based vendor who will do this work?
Thanks for your suggestions

If your system can handle HD, I'd ask for HD files on a drive since they'll likely crop the 16mm image to 16:9. That way you'll get as high a quality transfer as you can.

  • 8mm Film Transfer Services- .avi Uncompressed Question

I am researching film to digital transfer services and most of them seem to have this scanner technology that ends up as uncompressed .avi files. One company claims HD scanning. My problem is I edit in FCP and want to convert to ProRes. One company would do this for an hourly fee, but I'm trying to figure out how I can do it myself. I want as lossless a process as possible. Thanks in advance for replies.

Where are you located? We have Pro8mm here in LA that will capture as Quicktime movies. And they charge hourly...but that is the way it is done. And these guys do it right...professional telecine machines like are used in feature films. NATURAL BORN KILLERS used this place. I did for super8mm home movies.

but I'm trying to figure out how I can do it myself
Get a projector and HD camera and project the image onto a white wall and shoot it. That is the VERY poor man's way to do it. Another way that many cheap film-to-tape places utilize is a special projector straight into a camera lens, then to tape.
But for the lossless as possible, go Pro8mm.

  • 16mm film digital transfer question

    Hi...
I've been reading posts for several days trying to figure this out myself, but I'm a newbie.
I was wondering if anyone could give me the preferred specs for transferring 16mm and 8mm film to digital files in order to use in Final Cut Express. I don't think HD is necessary but I want it in the best quality to edit in FCE.
    1. What do I ask for from the transfer company, Apple Pro Res 422? What would the technical specs, codecs be?
    2. Can anybody recommend the best company on the east coast or otherwise.
    Thanks in advance!
    JP

Hello, and welcome to the Apple Discussion forums.
If you are using Final Cut Express, there are 2 choices:
    • QuickTime/DV-NTSC .mov files
    • QuickTime/Apple Intermediate Codec 720p30 or 1080i60 .mov files
    Some considerations:
16mm film is 4:3 aspect ratio; 8mm film is close but not exactly 4:3; DV is 4:3 aspect ratio - so using QT/DV-NTSC fits nicely
Apple Intermediate Codec is intended for 16:9 (widescreen) HD video but it may give you slightly better visual results, although you would wind up with pillarboxed video (4:3 in a 16:9 frame). Ask your vendor to provide a small sample file in both QT/DV and QT/AIC and compare the results before committing to the conversion.
ProRes is not supported in Final Cut Express.

  • Film to video transfer question

    Hi all,
I'm currently recieving my first 16mm film project in video but the footage are 4:3 with letter box not 16:9 as I expected. I talked to the coordinator & he said that it can't be in anamorphic since they didn't shoot it with the anamorphic lens. Is this true? I thought all film footages are originally 1.85:1 (anamorphic), right?
    thankx,

you are confusing a few things, and there is no reason why you cannot still get a 16:9 image or letterboxed image from your footage.
first it is common to shoot 16mm film and still achieve a letterbox look, but you must frame the action inside the 16mm frame for the necassary cropping of the 16mm image that will result. For example, many idependents shoot 16mm for 35mm blowup or shoot 16mm and telecine to HD for wide screen effect, but you must frame it inside the 16mm aspect ratio and be aware there will be some cut off at the top and bottom.
Now, iff you will lose important info in the cut off from 16mm to HD, you can pan & scan during the telecine which is very common.
Not sure how much footage you have to telecine, but you can use your current telecine footage for your offline, and after you have locked picture, take your telecine flex files and EDL back to the telecine post house and re-telecine your EDL to HD. Conform this HD telecine footage at the post house and voila! Your show will be HD & letterboxed.
Technically, 16:9 is not anamorphic in 'film' speak. Anamorphic cinematography only exist in 35mm and as there are no 16mm anamorphic lenses nor projectors. And as described above in film speak anamorphic is the compressing and uncompressing of the image to achieve a wide screen 2.35:1 look that you sometimes see in the movie theaters.
If you want a 16:9 letterbox look, you can just as easily crop your current 16mm telecined footage in Final Cut Pro.

  • Recommend 8mm Film Transfer Service

I would like to have our family 8mm films (and one 16mm from 1929) transferred to a digital format for editing in FCP. I don't want to spend a ton of $$ (I have 47 3-inch 8mm reels), but I want a good quality transfer. (One quote I got was for over $1,000) There are a bunch of companies that do this, but it is hard to tell who is good. Apparently there are several methods for transfer and it seems most result in an uncompressed .avi file. I am sorry to post this off-topic question here, but I trust this FCP forum and hope maybe some other editors have done this kind of project before.
    Thanks in advance for replies.

    Catherine
I think you have two incompatible requirements: "Good quality transfer" vs. "I don't want to spend a ton of $$." There is a high cost for a good quality commercial transfer.
A few years ago I got the bug to transfer family 8 and Super8 mm film to digital. My first attempt was to simply project the image on a screen and aim a camcorder at it. The result was not-so-great — flicker when projector speed isn't perfectly synched with camcorder speed, plus parallax and not perfect focus since the camcorder has to shoot the screen at an angle because it's alongside the projector, not directly in line with it.
Then, after a recommendation from this forum, I checked out MovieStuff (see Carl's post above). I ended up purchasing a WorkPrinter-XP and doing the job myself. (Click on the 'Equipment' link at the bottom of the MovieStuff page.) In simple terms, software on the Mac syncs the camcorder with the projector, capturing the film frame-by-frame, resulting in no flicker, no parallax, full-frame capture, and a sharp picture. Drop the file in FCP and edit to your heart's content, then create a DVD with music, a voiceover and/or closed captioning, and wow the family.
Other than having total control of all phases of the project plus the satisfaction of doing this myself, the next best thing is that, in the end, it cost me nothing. In fact, it continues to pay for itself. What would've been spent having the film commercially transferred, wasn't. As word spread, distant relatives asked if I could transfer their film. Yes, for a reasonable fee. Then word spread to non-relatives. You get the idea. In short, there is still a lot of 8mm film out there in canisters that people want to see but can't because their projectors don't work and many have heard horror stories of the product received when film was sent away to a commercial transfer outfit.
If doing it yourself interests you, one recommendation I would make is to splice the film on all those 3" reels and put it on 8" reels. The job goes a lot faster with fewer reels.
    Good luck

  • Video transfer question for older mac 10.5.8

I am trying to figure out how to transfer video from my JVC GR-D770U video camera to my PowerPC G5 running 10.5.8. I have the proper firewire cable but have been unable to find answer for my question on the internet that is specific to my situation.

... I dont have iMovie and cant find a version that works with my older OS.
The camera videos are on a Digital Video Cassette tape, not a card.
Use iMovie with your Firewire (IEEE 1394) connected mini DV camcorder.
iMovie 6 HD is part of iLife '06, works great with older miniDV camcorders,
and is compatible with your Mac OS X 10.5.8.  You will need to install
iMovie '06 before you can use the downloadable latest update from the link.
If you cannot find it locally, this old version is available on-line, including Amazon.com.

  • Log and transfer question

OK I was wondering if when I import AVCHD from my hard drive if the original files would be damaged at or removed at all. I just had a slight issue, and was wondering if that would be a problem. Any advice is appreciated. Thanks!

my apologies. I have a 750 gb. usb harddrive that I use for storage, and a Sony Handycam hdr-cx7. I thought that maybe I could drag all of the contents from my memory stick into a folder and import them as needed using log and transfer. What made me ask the question was basically what is the transfer part. I'm sorry if I'm wasting your time. Anyway, I did that with some test AVCHD video and it came out OK, but tonight when I went to import it again, because I didn't save my work (I was just messing around) it gave me a message that says, ""08:5:29" contains unsupported media or has an invalid directory structure. Please choose a folder whose directory structure matches supported media." This may be my procedure problem, but it is nice to have the storage option. Thanks again.

  • Film transfer from COLOR

    Hi,
I'm a student film maker just completed shooting my diploma project on RED ONE and planned the entire workflow on FINAL CUT STUDIO. It's just seemless but the final output should be delivered on FILM.
    My questions:
Which FILM RECORDER should be used?
I have contacted a studio which uses baselight as they grading/coloring tool and AatonK as their recorder. Is there any recalibration of the recorder to be done to use it with footage corrected by color?
Which monitor / projector should be used to preview the exact output?
Is there anything else I need to know?
    Thanks in advance ....

I can't say I've evaluated output from an Aaton.
You may find some economy trying to find a facility offering Celco film recorders, which is a CRT-based technology. If you can strike a deal with a company that offers ArriLaser, you won't get a better product -- but these devices are in demand and come with a premium price for services. As far as prepping the media for output to film - every facility will have its own secret sauce, as it will be utterly dependent on about a couple of thousand variables that you have no control over. Film stock varies slightly between batches, chemistry is mixed on a daily basis, bath temperatures can wobble depending on the time of day...you get the idea.
Firms that offer Baselight as a grading solution most often have alliances with film labs, if they aren't in fact the same company -- and with that integration they are able to offer a direct-to-fim path that takes all (or as many as possible) variables into account into the custom LUT monitoring that grade judgements are made with. That said, it is still very possible and at critical budget levels, practical, to grade with Apple COLOR (that was what Silicon Color Final Touch was created to do) and forward the media to a lab that understands that the grade was LINEAR, and that it needs to be migrated to a film colorspace. Those paths exist -- but they are unique to individual facilities.
Conceivably, your Apple graded project (dpx file) could be mounted on a Baselight for a final once-over if you do not have a reliable or calibrated monitoring facility.
Your next step is to find one of these businesses that are sympathetic to your situation.
You'll find most film grade theatres have a Barco installed.
    Bon chance.

  • Film Strip Question

If you have 2 monitors like i do, how do i get the film strip to appear on the 2nd screen.
For an example of what i mean if you press the F key you get the image selected in full screen in your current main screen, scroll the mouse down the screen and get the film strip.
How do i get that filmstrip when the image selected in the browser is already displayed at full screen on an alternate monitor?
    Hope that makes sense!
    Cheers

Did you "reorganize" them outside of LR? If so, LR has lost track of the images. You'll need to click the Question Mark on one at the highest level directory you can and point LR to the file. LR will try to re-locate the rest but you may need to do this for each changed branch.

  • Help on film transfer choices

I am producing a documentary. I am using interviews I shot on a Panasonic DVX100A NTSC and I'm using lots of archival footage. I am well into the editing process as my project is already well over an hour.
I am having film footage trasferred to Mini DV tape to I can capture into FCE. I have been asked the following two questions by the lab.
    1. Specify time code preference: drop frame or non-drop frame.
    2. Indicate whether you want speed correction for any footage that may originate from pre-sound or silent era or if you prefer any such items to be transferred at 24 frames per second.
I have not shot any interview using 24p. And all the footage is from the late 1950's and early 1960's. Any suggestions as to what I should do?

1 - for your purposes, I don't think it matters. Tell them non-drop frame.
2 - Your film footage isn't old enough to need the speed correction they're talking about. I don't think I would adjust the speed. If your main video sequences are NTSC (29.97fps) that's what you want the lab to give you.

  • KANBAN Stock Transfer Question.

    Hi All,
I am using kanban stock transfer stratergy(Mvmt type -311) to transfer my stock from one Sloc to another Sloc. I have given one fixed quantity and everytime that quantity is tranferred between sloc's. Now, My question is can give a tolerance limit to that kanban Quantity.
For example, If my kanban quantity is 500 Pc's can I provide a tolerance limit of 10% so that I can transfer the stock anywhere between 450 and 550. Please let me know if this functionality is possible.
    Thanks in advance,
    Sushil

    Hi,
As per standard SAP Practice , there is no provision of adding tolerance to Kanban Qty but you can replenish 450 /550 by manually editing the Kanban quantity in Kanban Correction. You can do Kanban correction in PK31n or directly by right click & selecting Kanban correction in Kanban Board screen.
Other way is you can use Event driven Kanban for one time replenishment of 450/550 so that you need not disturb the main Control cycle of Classical Kanban.
Even as per my knowledge, there is no BADI for Kanban which can help your requirement. So pls try above.
    Hope this helps.
    Revert if still any doubt.
    Regards,
    Tejas

  • Optical Film transfer

I need some help. I’ve worked on this project for about a month now and cannot figure out what I’m doing wrong.
I had 16mm Optical film (projector print) transferred to DV. When I capture the video into FCP it appears stretched, not up and down but side to side. When I view the tape on my monitor it looks fine, normal 4:3 ratio. In the “capture window” it looks fine, but when I drop it in to FCP it stretches it. I looked at the “items properties” it tells me that the clip is anamorphic, which makes no sense I didn’t roll it in anamorphic why would it read it that way? And how do I make it not anamorphic. I’ve asked everyone I know and read through the book twice, I can’t figure this out. Help!

Because it thought it needed to to make it "normal" for your sequence...
I guess I should add this now:

  • Viewing By Film Roll Question

    Hello,
Just a quick question regarding viewing a library by film roll:
I have read many of the discussions regarding the file structure in iPhoto 6 and finally getting my photos in the form I want them and where I want them!
Is it correct that you can only view your entire library in film roll order?
If I highlight 'Library' in the source list then I get all the individual rolls llisted. If I highlight an individual year in the source list then the 'view by film roll' option is greyed out.
It would be nice to have each roll in each year available to view - is this possible?
    Thanks,
    Chris
    ibook g4 1.33GHz   Mac OS X (10.4.4)

Rather than clicking on a particular year in the Source list, can you perhaps view the entire Library in film roll order and just deselect / un-tick the year(s) you do not wish to include?

  • I know.. not another film look question, but here is goes...

Hi all i hope you can help me here.
Im used to doing safety, corporate, induction videos so Ive never been interested in getting the "film look" But now Ive got a music video to do and i really don't want it to look interlaced.
Now i did some test on my HVX200 25p, and read up on it a little. Which brought me to my question.
I know that when shooting with real film cameras AND HD 25p cameras there is the rule not to pan very fast because it becomes jittery. But when i did my tests outside with my HVX200 25p PAL on a tripod (no panning) my footage seem a whole lot more jittery that film movies i see on tv. Its so jittery i cant use the footage! im to scared to do the music video on 25p.
So now i want to know, am i doing something wrong? Is the shutter speed or the way you capture in FCP got anything to do with the jittery? Or is 25p just that jittery?
Another question. Does anybody have some tips to get a better look and feel to my music video? plug ins? or whatever?
Thanks so much for your replies.
    Andre Meyer

    Hi Meyer,
The reason I said your video still looks jittery is because you have not graded or used any additional adaptors on your cam. Turning on a progressive shutter alone will just make your VIDEO look like 24/25P video! The movement is greatly exaggerated! The point I was trying to make is that once you have graded your footage and if you are lucky enough to use a 35mm adaptor, much of that jitteriness (if that’s a word?!) will not be so noticeable. Remember, if it goes away completely, you are back to square one almost! Its about how acceptable you can get with the 3 components I was talking about in my previous post.
I dont own an HVX200, but I have a V1E (not as good as the HVX200) and I find the cinema Gamma not that great as a default.. I have to tweak it quite a lot to achieve the all important contrast and saturated colours. As for your HVX, just have a play until u get a look u like. The Cinema Gammas on the Cheaper Canons are dreadful and make the cam lose all their contrast! I guess this varies a lot with the mid-priced prosumer cams?!
You don’t need to own a 5D MkII (an ergonomic disaster in my opinion unless u have the full rail kit!) to have that 35mm DOF control. There are quite a few 35mm adaptors out there that have attachments for many types of video cameras. There are users in this forum I think that use these types of adaptors with the HVX200’s. However, such equipment is not cheap.. and of course a good quality stills lens’s are not exactly cheap either!
    So to summarise:
    1. Use a progressive frame rate 24/25P
    2. Colour Grade to film... Best bet is to use Apple Colour... this is a really good colour corrector which has various preset that’s you can tweak and work pretty good as the film look. Of course you will need to experiment to get the effect u want. Alternatively, you can use Magic Bullet Looks.. which can be use used as a Plug-in to FCP, and is like Apple Colour on Steroids! It doesn’t offer the same amount of control as Color, but has some really interesting presets that can be easily tweaked.. and the good things is, this is all done without leaving FCP.. so its quick.
    3. If you want to go the whole way and go for a 35mm adaptor.. then do your home work. Do you currently own a select of still lenses? Canon L series or Nikon Pro series? Of course u don’t need the pro lenses, but in this set up the quality of your stills lens becomes really critical! Take a look on YouTube and see the effect these adapter give, they can be quite amazing! Be prepared to spend over £2500 for the adaptor alone!
    4. And of course, remember technique when shooting like this.. these adaptors do stop down your camera, you will probably have less light to play with. When u r tracking etc, DOF is really critical and can be difficult to master at first.
I don’t have any 35mm adapter, i try to achieve the film look by using steps 1 and 2..the result, well... its ok but often means I have to mess about with camera distances sometimes to achieve a decent DOF. Swings a roundabouts!

  • Home Movie Film Transfer File Format

What file format should I request for my home movie film transfers?  I want to both archive the films in high definition and edit with Premiere Elements 8.  Disc space is not a problem.

The commercial movie transfer companies are recommending HD AVI, AVI Black Magic, Motion JPEG (which they say are equivalent), and not MPEG-2.  I didn't know that AVI could be 1440x1080.  Can you give me some examples of 1440x1080 non-square pixel file names or could you refer me to an information source so I would know what I am talking about when I talk with them?
