[SOLVED] Perl updated to 5.20: Should I pacman -Syu?

Hi all,
In the arch home page one reads:
Perl updated to 5.20
2014-06-04
Perl 5.20, as any other new perl version, requires all modules that are not purely perl code to be rebuilt. We did that for all packages in our repos.
The last couple major updates printed an error message when trying to load modules built against the wrong version, 5.20 seems to cause segfaults. Please make sure to rebuild all custom installed CPAN modules and binaries that link to libperl.so.
Refer to my post on arch-dev-public for a script that helps to find those packages.
I executed the script and I got this:
$cd /tmp/find-broken-perl-package.22jFUOeh
$ls *
pacman.txt perl-dists.txt perl-modules.txt raw.txt
$cat *
libproxy
Net::Libproxy
/usr/lib/perl5/vendor_perl/auto/Net/Libproxy/Libproxy.so
I read the announcement, but I'm not sure what to do next.. What should I rebuild and how?
Or am I good to just go on and pacman -Syu? I'm a bit extra cautious as I had problems in
the past when I wasn't.
Thanks in advance
EDIT: perl-dists.txt was empty, so the output of cat * is for pacman.txt, perl-modules.txt, and raw.txt, respectively.

tomk wrote:I guess it might be helpful to add that in the news item, the word "custom" essentially means "installed from source(s) other than the official Arch repos", since the devs have taken care of any official packages. So you just need to determine the source of that libproxy package, and then rebuild or not as required.
Thanks.. I think I'll be safe to upgrade. Just one more question: while trying to figure out who is using the libproxy package
I did the following:
jorge@flamingo:~$ sudo pacman -Qo /usr/lib/perl5/vendor_perl/auto/Net/Libproxy/Libproxy.so
/usr/lib/perl5/vendor_perl/auto/Net/Libproxy/Libproxy.so is owned by libproxy 0.4.11-2
Ok, so sure enough Libproxy.so is used by libproxy. Then I'm not sure how to find out
who is using libproxy as a dependency. I did
pacman -Si libproxy
but that didn't give any information about that. So I had to pretend that I'm
uninstalling things to get to what is using libproxy:
jorge@flamingo:~$ sudo pacman -R libproxy
checking dependencies...
error: failed to prepare transaction (could not satisfy dependencies)
:: glib-networking: requires libproxy
jorge@flamingo:~$ sudo pacman -R glib-networking
checking dependencies...
error: failed to prepare transaction (could not satisfy dependencies)
:: libsoup: requires glib-networking
jorge@flamingo:~$ sudo pacman -R libsoup
checking dependencies...
error: failed to prepare transaction (could not satisfy dependencies)
:: abiword-plugins: requires libsoup
:: darktable: requires libsoup
:: gst-plugins-good: requires libsoup
:: gstreamer0.10-good-plugins: requires libsoup-gnome
:: gvfs: requires libsoup
:: webkitgtk2: requires libsoup
Is there a more proper way of obtaining those packages?

  • [SOLVED] Can't find LVM root device after pacman -Syu

    Hey, can anyone give me a hand here? I haven't updated in about a month, but the last time I did was definitely after the changes-to-lvm post in the news (I know that because it's what got me on the last update )
    I noted just before the update that cat /proc/1/comm displayed "init", which surprised me. Maybe I'd installed systemd but not configured it?
    Anyway now I'm getting:
    Waiting 10 seconds for device /dev/mapper/belle-root …
    ERROR: Unable to find root device '/dev/mapper/belle-root'
    You are being dropped to a recovery shell.
    I've chrooted from a SUSE CD I had lying around and followed the "changes to LVM" instructions again in case I'd missed something, but nothing is changing.
    Can anyone help me out? Thanks.

    You have to use lvm first.  As all those vg*, lv*, and pv* commands are actually links to the lvm command, you should have to do something like "lvm vgscan" instead of just "vgscan".
    Edit: oh and at that point in the boot process, you are actually in the initramfs still (ash to be specific).
    Edit2: I was having issues with a USB keyboard and a new machine (actually just a new bios), and found out that because of windows 8's requriement for a fast POST, the default is to turn off the scanning for usb devices.  Though this was for UEFI, and I am not sure if the same would apply for a bios booting machine...

  • [Solved] Pacman -Syu not updating fully?

    I've run Syy then Syu a couple times, yet pacman doesn't alert me to a newer Linux in core.
    $ uname -r
    Output: ... 3.6.5 ...
    $ pacman -S linux
    Output: ... linux-3.6.9-1 ...
    So should I install this newer Linux regardless and then re-run Syu? Or is pacman disregarding 3.6.9 for a reason?
    Thanks,

    I haven't done the update yet, I just see that it is available, and my system has already been rebooted a few times after a previous system update (last week).
    So the scenario is I have a freshly rebooted box reporting kernal 3.6.5, and pacman -Syy then pacman -Syu tells me everything is up to date, and pacman -S linux tells me that 3.6.9 is available.
    That scenario seems odd so I just wanted to ask if it means maybe that I shouldn't update yet, or should I just update the kernel regardless by doing pacman -S linux?
    You have "linux" on IgnorePkg? check your /etc/pacman.conf
    If you are using arch on a vps (not based on kvm, but on openvz or similar) chances are, you are stuck with your current kernel.
    If thats the case, don't force the kernel update.

  • [SOLVED] perl 5.16-2 breaks LWP

    ... or actually, some dependencies of LWP.
    I have some scripts that use LWP (perl-libwww) to process web pages (old school, I know, but I wrote them long ago).
    After running pacman -Syu yesterday I noticed that my scripts were generating 'Segmentation fault' messages.  After some digging, I ran perl interactively and entered several 'use' statements for each dependency. I found the perl module Encode::Locale is where the segfault seems to be happening, but CPAN shows that module last updated in February.  Digging further, HTTP::Message has the same issue (it's another dependency of LWP.
    I'm betting there are other perl modules involved as well, because another system that has a 2-day old Arch install showed the same symptoms, but LWP was not installed there.  I had to fix that one by rolling perl back to 5.14.
    Any clues, hints, fixes?
    Thanks in advance.

    the trace for Encode::Locale; goes like this:

  • [SOLVED]kernel update to kernel26-2.6.38.2-1, boot fail

    First of all my archlinux know-how only dated from April 2011. And I began my linux explore just at March 2011 after whole disk format of old XP.
    Apology that English is not my native language.
    My problem:
    Intel P M dothan 725 1.6GHz laptop.
    1. I had ubuntu10.10 installed on sda1 and grub2 installed to the MBR. sda2 as swap.
    2. I installed archlinux onto sda3 inside ubuntu according to this WIKI:(Install from Existing Linux) https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/In … ting_Linux
    3. os_probe detected the new os and updated the boot menu. I was able to login to archlinux. I was able to use the wireless network and installed gnome.
    Then one day "pacman -Syu" prompted me to update to kernel26-2.6.38.2-1. I did the upgrading but got a boot failure.
    After the grub2 screen the system began to initialize, I could see lines of messages scrolling down the screen.
    But it seems the scroll down will never stop. The scroll down speed is too fast I am not able to recognize the messages.
    Anyhow I perceived that the scrolling messages were repeating the same content. I guess it got into an "infinite loop".
    This happened as soon as I selected archlinux in grub2(less than 0.5s after I hit ENTER), and before udev b/c the screen resolution was not reset to its optimal.
    I don't think there's any dmsg log.(Well, I admitted I did not checked.)
    All I can do is to login to ubuntu and chroot to archlinux and retreat to the previous kernel. And fortunately it worked.
    I tried to update the kernel several times both in ubuntu chroot and in archlinux. All failed. All the same symptom.
    I am not sure if it was a bug in kernel26-2.6.38.2-1.
    Can I fix the problem, or should I file a bug report?
    Another problem, I do not know how to file a bug report.
    edit:
    kernel26-2.6.37.5-1
    kernel26-2.6.37.6-1 all confirmed no problem.
    I have retreated to kernel26-2.6.37.6-1

    I would prefer to paste the lspci -vnn info here if you don't mind.
    There were kinds of log files under /var/log but I almose know nothing about them.
    I didn't try 2.6.38 on Ubuntu because I'd prefer the stable version. It had not been released. Anyhow your questions make me curious to see the result. Maybe I will give it a try.
    You can see it's fairly old hardware ;-)

  • [Solved] glibc-Update-fail and broken system when using custom kernel

    I had a similar issue with the glibc-update as described in several threads.
    I guess, the reason why I ran into the problem was that I'm using a custom-built kernel. So the kernel modules (drivers etc.) under /lib/modules/custom-kernel/ are owned by no pacman package.
    At my system, after upgrating via
    # pacman -Syu --ignore glibc
    # pacman -Su
    The upgrade failed and  /lib/modules/ and the files, owned by the glibc-package remained at the still existing directory /lib.
    Rebooting the computer in this situation causes a sytem freeze.
    Now, here is my sucessful repair, briefly described. Maybe it will help someone:
    1. Booting the computer with the Arch Linux net Install image
    2. mounting my root partition manually at /mnt
    3. performing the following commands:
    # cd /mnt
    # cp -ar lib/* usr/lib/
    # rm -rf lib
    # ln -s usr/lib lib
    7. removing net install image and rebooting the computer
    ==> the system works again, but:
    # pacman -Su
    still produces error messages like:
    error: failed to commit transaction (conflicting files)
    glibc: /lib exists in filesystem
    glibc: /usr/lib/ld-2.16.so exists in filesystem
    glibc: /usr/lib/ld-linux.so.2 exists in filesystem
    glibc: /usr/lib/libBrokenLocale-2.16.so exists in filesystem
    glibc: /usr/lib/libBrokenLocale.so.1 exists in filesystem
    Now at the last step I did is, what the wiki is seriosly discouraging from I use --force:
    # pacman -f -Su
    After that my system was repaired
    I think using force at that point is OK, because the files will only be replaced which are already moved to the right location.

    If you use a custom-built kernel you should really package it up so you can easily avoid this sort of thing just by repackaging.

  • After a firmware update to airport express should I unplug the unit then plug it back in? (bascially reboot it)

    After a firmware update to airport express should I unplug the unit wait a bit and plug it back in?  (basically a reboot)

    I updated the firmware on the 2nd of this month.  Everything was fine.  About a week later internet speed began to be slow.  I rebooted the modem and the speed was okay for awhile, then slow again. I'm wondering if it's the airport express.  It didn't tell me to reboot at the end of the installation.

  • [Solved] Recent update seems to have broke automount in XFCE

    I seem to have managed to break my removable storage support.  It had been working since installation several months ago.  I have made no modifications to anything in /etc other than those that would be performed by package updates.
    Tried copying /etc/skel/.xinitrc to ~/ and added exec dbus-launch ck-launch-session startxfce4.
    Checked output of groups to ensure I'm in the storage group.
    Checked for presence of org.freedesktop.udisks.pkla:

    Hi,
    I automount four NFS mounts from my ubuntu server through /etc/fstab. This used to work perfectly. Until the latest filesystem update. The removable devices do not get mounted. They do not appear in Nautilus. But when I plug in a USB, they all get activated.
    Anyway, I will try your solution.
    Regards,
    Alexander

    I searched for the solution, and one of the solution would be to use
    sudo pacman -S --force webkitgtk2
    but not sure if its safe to force the pacman to update it. What should i do?
    Thank you in advance!

    No! If you don't know when to use "--force", then don't use "--force"!
    DISCLAIMER: I, too, don't know when it's safe to use "--force". You were wise to simply wait and ask.

    I think you mean "there is only iWork.com". iWork is the name of the 3 software programs. iWork.com is a web site.
    You can use iWork.com till 1 August. (Apple is shutting down iWork.com from 1 August.) After that date you'll have to use iCloud, though it's available now to use. See Re: How to upload a document to iCloud from Mac?
    NB This process is a bit clumsy. Apple have said they'll be improving iCloud in OS X Mountain Lion. But this new version of OS X won't be available till end of summer (or winter if you're in the other hemisphere).
    Note also that iCloud only syncs documents between your devices. It doesn't share documents with others. If you need to do this you should consider another service like DropBox, Google Drive or Microsoft Skydrive.

    Placing your device into recovery (DFU-Device Firmware Upgrade) mode:
    Follow these steps to place your iOS device into recovery mode. If your iOS device is already in recovery mode, you can proceed immediately to step 6.
       1. Disconnect the USB cable from the iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch, but leave the
           other end of the cable connected to your computer's USB port.
       2. Turn off the device: Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button for a few seconds
           until the red slider appears, then slide the slider. Wait for the device to turn off.
                  * If you cannot turn off the device using the slider, press and hold the
                    Sleep/Wake and Home buttons at the same time. When the device turns off,
                    release the Sleep/Wake and Home buttons.
      3. While pressing and holding the Home button, reconnect the USB cable to the
           device. The device should turn on. Note: If you see the battery charge warning,
           let the device charge for at least ten minutes to ensure that the battery has some
           charge, and then start with step 2 again.
      4. Continue holding the Home button until you see the "Connect to iTunes" screen.
           When this screen appears you can release the Home button:
      5. If necessary, open iTunes. You should see the following "recovery mode" alert:
      6. Use iTunes to restore the device.
    If you don't see the "Connect to iTunes" screen, try these steps again. If you see the "Connect to iTunes" screen but the device does not appear in iTunes, see this article and its related links.
    Note: When using recovery mode, you can only restore the device. All user content on the device will be erased, but if you had previously synced with iTunes on this computer, you can restore from a previous backup. See this article for more information.
