[SOLVED] Problem setting up Xorg (following the beginner's guide)
Ok, so I've moved onto "Step 3: Configure X"...
I have a concern though... Didn't nVidia already make a "xorg.conf" file in the previous step when i installed nvidia drivers? If I follow the instructions in the new steps (Step 3), I creat a new file at /root/xorg.conf.new using the "Xorg -configure" command. This new file has some similar entries to /etc/x!!/xorg.conf as well as many more new ones.
What shall I do with these two files? add everything from xorg.conf.new to the xorg.conf created by nvidia-xconfig? Carefully place certain entries from one into the other? I've backed up the /etc/X11/xorg.conf file in case i do something horrible
I'm not a master of linux (i have just started my first class) but I believe I see some entries that might be conflicting if I combine the files:
For example, both files have Section "InputDevice" and in either of these sections there is Identifier "Mouse0"
However, one has option "Device" "/dev/input/mice"
while the other has option "Device" "/dev/psaux"
So the two settings are obviously not identical.
The next thing the Begginer's Guide says to do is copy the new file to the old file:
cp /root/xorg.conf.new /etc/X11/xorg.conf
Is this a problem? Will I loose all my nvidia settings if I do this? Can i just put both files together using the "cat" command? Or do I have to manually pick and select the correct values to have in the final /etc/X11/xorg.conf file?
Won't this over write the configurations that the nvidia drivers wrote to /etc/X11/xorg.conf ?
Shall I use the cat command to combine the files?
Side note: The computer freezes on a black screen when testing out the xorg.conf.new file with the following command:
X -config /root/xorg.conf.new
it also freezes on a black scren when testing out the real xorg.conf file with the following command:
X -config /etc/X11/xorg.conf
Perhaps these tests are premature at this stage until my settings are finalized?
Can someone tell me what to do with these two files, as the Beginner Guide doesn't (and it's a beginner guide!)?
In the meantime, I will now attempt to combine the two files (no worries though, I've backed up my files).

X doesn't need much information in the config file. Here's my one if you want to try it out (I also have an nvidia card):
Section "ServerLayout"
Identifier "Default Layout"
Screen "Default Screen"
EndSection
Section "Module"
Load "dbe"
Load "extmod"
Load "freetype"
Load "glx"
EndSection
Section "Monitor"
Identifier "Default Monitor"
EndSection
Section "Device"
Identifier "Default Device"
Driver "nvidia"
Option "NoLogo" "True"
Option "TripleBuffer" "True"
EndSection
Section "Screen"
Identifier "Default Screen"
Device "Default Device"
Monitor "Default Monitor"
SubSection "Display"
Depth 24
EndSubSection
EndSection
Section "Extensions"
Option "Composite" "Enable"
EndSection

[SOLVED] Error with Nvidia Drivers (following the Beginner's Guide)
I followed the beginner's installation guide and everything worked fine all the way up untill updating the kernel module dependencies using the "depmod -a" command..
First I created the "xorg.conf" file with the "nvidia-xconfig" command and it said:
Make sure all instances of DRI are commented out:
# Load "dri"
However, there are no instances of "dri" in my xorg.conf file, so i skipped this step and moved on.
Next it said:
Double check your /etc/X11/xorg.conf to make sure your default depth, horizontal sync, vertical refresh, and resolutions are acceptable.
But I don't know what they should be set to, so I skipped this and moved on again.
This is where everything fails:
The next step is to use the following command to update the kernel module dependencies for the nVidia drivers.
depmod -a
But when i do that, it fails.
Anyone know possibly why or has had this issue?

You can run any kernel version you wish on Arch, if you compile yourself, of course.
trustktr wrote:Hmmmm, yeah, that is a good question: When to run depmod -a?
When you first install the proprietary drivers. That's it, unless you will be maintaining a custom kernel system or something. In fact, the proprietary drivers might even run the depmod script themselves, I don't know, since it is a black box binary. Makes sense, but someone else would need to answer that.
EDIT: Also wanted to add that many shell commands throw no output whatsoever upon successful completion. Therefore, the absence of error output can be interpreted as no error. Just FYI.

Clock showing wrong hour even though I followed the Beginner's Guide
Hey guys,
So today I re-installed ArchLinux & Windows 7 on my laptop, here's how it works:
SSD: ArchLinux x64
HDD: Windows 7
I mainly use Arch, and the few times I use Windows, I choose to boot from my HDD instead of my SSD, from the BIOS.
Technically, it's not a dual boot I guess, so I shouldn't be affected by these manipulations
The time showed in my BIOS is correct.
The time showed by Windows 7 is correct.
The time showed in ArchLinux is however wrong, it's two hours late.
Following the Beginner's Guide I've run these command without success:
hwclock --systohc --utc
If any of you has any suggestions...
Thanks :]My apologies. I thought that this particular problem between Windows and Linux was caused by Windows somehow overwriting Linux settings, and since in my case they are in different physical drives, I thought I wasn't concerned.
Anyway, since I've read somewhere in the wiki that localtime should be avoided, I successfully did the manipulation do set Windows 7 in UTC.
I've then updated the hardware clock and system clock time, but it didn't change a thing.
I'm going to try the manipulations provided by your link luvfree, thanks
I'll keep you posted, thanks to all of you, and again, my apologies for my wrong asumptions
EDIT: APPARENTLY IT'S SOLVED:
I had to boot into Linux, and set the time manually with:
# date +%T -s "10:13:13"
Then run:
hwclock --systohc --utc
Next boot, the time value were correct int both Linux, AND Windows
Thanks to all of you, I'll try to think more next time

[Solved]Oops, I accidentally deleted the "Beginner's Guide" wiki page.
My apologies, I am trying to fix my mistake right now, but if someone could help me out, the sooner the better. I accidentally deleted the Beginner's Guide wiki page, trying to add my own edit. Will post back when I get it back to the last revision.

Update: can't say I checked any of his older posts but I guess I've seen part of his 'dumping linux' blog post -- most likely the one that 'angried' people and said sisters. I can only ask myself: what the big deal is? Who actually cares? Personally I never understood blogs nor the need to have them .. but it was my opinion that these unfortunate inventions were supposed to be destined for your friends (+sisters) to read. So I can't understand this: why does anybody else in the world -- care -- about what that guy uses/doesn't use? What makes him so important / such a(n) hero.

[SOLVED] Cannot install python per instructions in Beginner's Guide.
So, the overview:
I just finished installing as per the Beginner's Guide and have logged in as root.
I've enabled a couple mirrors in /etc/pacman.d/mirrorlist
Doing NOTHING ELSE I run the following command: "pacman -Sy" python and the result:
python package not found, searching for group...
error: 'python': not found in sync db
After that I tried another suggestion I saw here on the forum: pacman -Sy and then pacman -Syy
Nothing. I thought maybe I botched something on the install, so I did it again. Same result. I cannot get pacman to install python (or ruby) or anything.
What gives?
Last edited by cult hero (2010-01-10 04:51:42)Yes. If no mirrors are uncommented a different error comes up. (no servers configured for repository)

Hello,
Maybe I did something wrong? I wanted to print the "Beginner's Guide Wiki" for reference. Using FF3 (from a different machine), I clicked on the "Printable Version" link, and proceeded to print. The regular text of the Wiki printed fine. However, the boxes (outlined in dashes) that contain the commands to enter did not print. I just have blank spaces where the command line text should be. One of the main reasons that I wanted to print the wiki was to have this information readily available whilst installing and configuring Arch. Now I have a large stack of paper with a lot of important information missing. Any ideas what went wrong? For what its worth, I finally figured it out. If I select individual pages or ranges of pages to print in the FF print dialog, I have the above-mentioned issues. If I print the whole document, on the other hand, everything is fine. Strange huh?

Translation to Spanish of the Beginner's Guide
I am planning to translate the Beginner's Guide to Spanish.
I'd like to help with something more useful than a translation, eventually, like contributing with Arch development (bug fixing?), but I don't have the time and energy to dive into that pool right now (I'm not even used to Linux programming ).
Anyway, the reason for this post, is to ask whether:
1) A Spanish translation of the Beginner's Guide has already been started.
2) The community thinks another doc should take precedence. I chose the Beginner's Guide because it's the single resource that has helped me the most to get my Arch system up and running.Nuwanda wrote:1) A Spanish translation of the Beginner's Guide has already been started.
Usually people will write it in the wiki, so everyone can see the progress. There doesn't appear to be a spanish version yet.
tip: I would write it in the wiki also, rather than do it offline, as that way other spanish users can aid you aswell.

No better page in my opinion. Also, you can see the page hits at the bottom, and the english version is standing strong at 123,000 hits!
Oh and btw, good luck!

B200 error. What must I do to fix the problem? I have removed the ink and printer head and unplugged for 10 min. The MP620B still fails to work.
Hi CW63,
If you have already tried reseating the print head without success, the printer would require service. I recommend using the Contact Us link to get in touch with our support staff who can provide available service options.

[SOLVED]problem about wc to check the amount of the processes through
#problem about wc to check the amount of the processes through ps
hi.this is the processes current
$ps
PID TTY TIME CMD
2674 tty3 00:00:00 bash
2689 tty3 00:00:00 mocp
2746 tty3 00:00:00 ps
$ps | wc -l
5
The problem:since there are 4 lines of ps output here, why wc -l shows the number "5"?
And if i redirect ps to a file and then check the lines number with "wc -l",it's "4".
$ps > out
$cat out
PID TTY TIME CMD
2674 tty3 00:00:00 bash
2689 tty3 00:00:00 mocp
2753 tty3 00:00:00 ps
$cat out | wc -l

Any idea?Thanks.

hi.thank you.
The clue you bring here sounds reasonable. But a little more confusion to me comes around.I will check the bash rules for digest commands.thanks. -
I keep the inspector open when using ical. This problem seems to be new to Lion that the inspector window says topmost even when ical is not active. Any way to change this behavior or is it a bug?
Go into Settings, General, Dat & Time, and set your time zone to New York. That will set the correct time.

[SOLVED] Problems setting DPI on my Razer Orochi mouse
Hi,
I recently installed Arch on my laptop and configured mostly everything but I can't get the two right buttons on my Orochi to work - they are in charge of changing DPI on the fly (I think usually in chunks of 500 with 2000 as the default max through Bluetooth)
I have scoured the Arch Wiki and Google and I'm at a loss as to how to fix this problem (I click them and they do nothing)
Razercfg currently doesn't support Orochi - It uses Synapse 2.0 on Windows to configure
Anyone have any advice? The on-the-fly DPI change is useful for video games and I'd like to get it working
EDIT: After having a few beers and playing with it some more, I realized that the two buttons are registering as key presses and not button presses. Knowing that, the solution became fairly obvious:
- Run xbindkeys_config (I like the GUI version) and bind these commands to each button:
xinput --set-prop "Razer Orochi" "Device Accel Constant Deceleration" .5
xinput --set-prop "Razer Orochi" "Device Accel Constant Deceleration" 2
Could probably pretty easily write a script to put in more than just two values but that should be enough for my needs
So thanks anyway everyone - and I hope this helps someone in the future

[solved] Problem setting up a dedicated ssh proxy user
I created a user which should only be able to create a ssh SOCKS tunel, with no shell access:
username: proxy
User ID: 1000 (or should it be 500?)
shell: /bin/cat
password: xxx
group: users
The problem is that when I try to ssh to it by
ssh proxy@ip -vvv
or set up a tunnel
ssh proxy@ip -D 9999 -vvv
I get asked for the password and when I give it, I get:
debug2: we did not send a packet, disable method
debug3: authmethod_lookup password
debug3: remaining preferred: ,password
debug3: authmethod_is_enabled password
debug1: Next authentication method: password
proxy@ip's password:
debug3: packet_send2: adding 64 (len 58 padlen 6 extra_pad 64)
debug2: we sent a password packet, wait for reply
debug1: Authentications that can continue: publickey, password
Permission denied, please try again.
I am positive the password given is correct.

I using Windows 7, try to restore my mini Ipad to factory settings... never jailbrake or somthing like that, still have the problem error 3194!!! for restore, some one help? Thank you
Try going into the control panel, add/remove programs. Uninstall iTUnes, Apple mobile device service, apple application support. Then redownload and reinstall iTunes and see if it'll work
If the computer sees your iPad you know the cable and connection is good, so the issue has to be software. -
My iPod touch 4th gen WILL connect to my computer but not iTunes. I ran the diagnostics in iTunes and Apple mobile service is running, iTunes is updated and iTunes says everything is ok EXCEPT it says there is no iPod connected, but my computer says it is.
The apple diagnostic is located under the "Help" tab in the "Run Diagnostics" button.
Everything is a green light and is ready to go, except the last diagnostic which says that I do not have an iPod connected. The problem here is that I do, It is also a new iPod and when I plug it in I hear the computer beep that signifies that an external device has been connected.
My sister also has this problem connecting to the same computer (the only computer with this problem).Have you tried everything here:
iOS: Device not recognized in iTunes for Windows
including:
Removing and reinstalling iTunes, QuickTime, and other software components for Windows Vista or Windows 7
or
Removing and Reinstalling iTunes, QuickTime, and other software components for Windows XP
