[SOLVED] Programmer dvorak in console

Hi. I'm unable to load the programmer dvorak keymap for console.
For X11, I'm setting XbkLayout dvp in the config file, but list-keymaps doesn't show this, so I cannot use it for the console.
Any tips on how I can enable this in vconsole.conf?

I have the same, but for X11, I use dvp (dvorak programmer) from aur/programmers-dvorak.
The problem is that I don't know how I can use it for a non-graphical console.

  • [SOLVED] Dead keys on console in UTF-8 locale

    Hello,
    I want to share something interesting I found out about dead keys support on the Linux console (i.e., without X).
    I live in Canada and use the "Canadian French" keyboard, which uses dead keys for several diacritical marks (e.g., to type ê I push and release the ^ key, then type the e key). It works perfectly under X, but I was unable to type any character using dead keys on the console. On the other hand, non-ASCII characters like "é" that do not use dead keys worked perfectly.
    After some googling, I found many posts claiming the kernel did not support dead keys when the console was in Unicode mode. So I changed the locale to a non-UTF-8 setting in /etc/rc.conf, and indeed dead keys started working. But this was not useful to me, since editing UTF-8 files resulted in gibberish, and I did not want to regress back to Latin1 encoding or have to support both encodings. I tried many combinations of settings, but none worked. For a few days, I thought there was no way to have dead keys and Unicode working on the Console.
    But then I started to install Arch Linux on another computer and noticed that when I set the keyboard to Canadian French with the "km" utility before installing (the keymap is called "cf"), dead keys worked, even though the locale was Unicode! So there was a way to do it.
    I started digging and trying new things, and found out that after the following incantations, I was able to enable dead keys for Unicode on the console:
    kbd_mode -a
    sudo loadkeys cf
    kbd_mode -u
    This sets the console to ASCII mode, loads the "cf" keymap, and sets the console back to Unicode. I found it by trial and error, and I have no idea why it works or whether it breaks anything. I'm posting here to ask if there are easier ways to have a functional Canadian French keyboard on the console, and to document what I did in case someone has a similar problem.

    I have the exact same issue.
    The weird thing for me is that before I was using gentoo and never had a problem with dead keys and unicode. Also, I confirm that dead keys is working when booting from the archlinux installation cd. Either run 'loadkeys cf' rigth after login or pass 'keymap=cf' as a boot parameter to the kernel line by editing it in grub before booting.
    Your solution is interesting, however the cf.map.gz file is the same on the installation cd (and on my gentoo system) so it should works without editing it.
    In my quest to solve this issue, I found something interesting. I added the 'keymap' hook in /etc/mkinitcpio.conf and regenerated the image by issuing
    mkinitcpio -g /boot/kernel26.img
    This alone didn't solved the issue, but then I REMOVED the keymap assignation in /etc/rc.conf (i.e. leaving it as
    KEYMAP=
    ), rebooted... and voilà, it now works.
    Furthermore, now if I run
    sudo loadkeys cf
    after login it stops working (well of course because it's the same as defining KEYMAP="cf" in /etc/rc.conf). Issuing the 3 commands of your first post make it works again. OK so I did one more test: boot from the archlinux installation cd by adding the 'keymap=cf' boot parameter to the kernel line and then run 'loadkeys cf' after login to see if it breaks dead keys. But no, it still works.
    So is this issue comes from a newer version of the kernel/loadkeys/mkinitcpio/...? How different is the kernel and initramfs images of the installation cd compared to the installed system ?

  • [Solved] Disable firefox error console?

    I have mapped two mouse gestures to the same function in firefox using two different extensions. I know this sounds really stupid but it is absolutely necessary! As a result, the error console opens every time I start firefox. The messages tab is displayed but no message shows up. This is very annoying so does anyone know an about:config option or a jar I can unpack and edit to stop it from showing up?

    Ok after getting vague help at best from irc.mozilla.org I went grepping. I grepped xulrunner-1.9.0.11/chrome and firefox-3.0/chrome for all occurences of 'console.xul' and when I found one, I went into the corresponding file and commented it out. Problem solved! (In a horrible way)
    This means I can't access it even if I wanted to. But that's ok because many console extensions make the built in console obsolete. I suppose the way to do this without wasting space would be to find out how to compile xulrunner and firefox so that they come with no console. But I imagine that would be difficult.

  • Norwegian dvorak in console

    Hi there
    I Have just installed ArchLinux, but I couldn't find the norwegian dvorak layout during the installation,
    so I continued with qwerty.
    Now I have Arch installed, which thinks I have qwerty, and a dvorak layout on my keyboard, but I
    dont't know either of the layouts without some looking at the keyboard.
    I am also a newbe at linux, but I have decided that arch is the distro for me.
    I am asking for help to change to norwegian dvorak, not just how, but how to do it with minimal typing
    at the keyboard before arch knows i have norwegian dvorak as my keyboard layout.
    any help will be well appreciated

  • [SOLVED] Freezing while "Setting Consoles to UTF-8 mode"

    Hi everyone,
    I recently ran a Pacman -Syu on my bare bones network boot HTPC. I rebooted for the first time today due to a network issue which caused the machine to freeze up(since it network boots it couldn't do anything with no network). Now when I reboot it seems to be freezing while performing the "Setting Consoles to UTF-8 mode" step. I am not sure what changed on the system as everything else appears to be in good working order. I don't even know where to start to troubleshoot this issue. I had a look through rc.sysinit and I can see the section  but nothing seems amiss when compared to my other working machines here. I had a look through the log files but also nothing pops out. Any ideas?

    This is interesting since I still have the issue on my system, I havn't yet reverted to an older kernel but was thinking the kernel package is the likely issue, using version kernel 2.6.33
    I take it this isn't a common error? is this possibly a 64 bit kernel error or a video related error?
    Still no answer from me yet, not that I have spend a great deal of time trying to look at it. annoying though.

  • [SOLVED] Lost my text console

    After the last full upgrade yesterday, something odd has happened to my console.  I don't use any kind of gdm; I boot (with nomdeset) to a text-only console and then run startx if/when I'm ready for GUI stuff.  When I want a larger, full-screen font or just avoid the clutter of a desktop, I'll ctrl-alt-F{x} to a non-GUI console.  When I'm ready to reboot, I quit out of fluxbox and do so.
    All of a sudden, once I start xorg the text consoles are gone.  ctrl-alt-F1 takes me to a blank screen; if I exit out of xorg entirely there are no visible consoles anywhere and I have to blindly ctrl-alt-del to reboot.  It's not a crippling problem -- I can do whatever I want through xterm -- but it's annoying.
    graphics card is an onboard Radeon 6530; using the arch implementation of the catalyst driver (catalyst-hook).  Has anyone else seen this happen?

    Ah, found the answer over in the Catalyst thread of the bar&grill forum:
    I got workaround from one of the bug reports in the unofficial site :  just pass vga=... (say vga=792 ) to kernel from grub
    This fixed it for me

  • [SOLVED]login incorrect at console

    Hello,
    I use to log in runlevel 3 with no problems. Everything works fine on my fresh and up-to-date Archlinux install.
    I added two users, fallowing the Archlinux wiki "Users and Groups".
    $sudo useradd -m -g users -G audio,lp,optical,storage,video,wheel,games,power,scanner -s /bin/bash newuser
    $sudo passwd newuser
    $cat /etc/passwd
    The cat command returns correctly the list of all new users. I can see their home folder.
    When I reboot, at the console prompt, typing the username and password returns login incorrect
    In fact, only me and root, created when installing Archlinux, are working at the login prompt.
    What am I missing ? Why the added users can't login ?
    TY for your help.

    Did you try the interactive approach with adduser command instead of useradd?
    Edit: Some sort of workaround rather than a clean solution, nevertheless reported to be working: https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=136185

  • [SOLVED] Autologin to virtual console systemd

    Hi!
    Today i wanted to get rid of slim.service, so i read this wiki page: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Au … th_systemd .
    I already changed my .bash_profile to startx after i login with my user in tty1.
    I followed that wiki page, but when i have to create the symbolic link, i got this message:
    ln -s /etc/systemd/system/[email protected] /etc/systemd/system/getty.target.wants/[email protected]
    ln: creazione del collegamento simbolico "/etc/systemd/system/getty.target.wants/[email protected]" non riuscita: File già esistente
    (in english: symbolic link creation faild: file already exists)
    Why have I that file? Can i safely remove it?
    I noticed that i have a [email protected] enabled (by default i guess) that has "Alias=getty.target.wants/[email protected]". So this is the problem! Can i disable this service?
    Thanks!
    ps: little OT: can i disable remote-fs.target, if i have none?
    Thanks!

    Ok, it was as easy as
    systemctl disable [email protected]
    and then enable the [email protected].
    And yes, i could disable remote-fs.target

  • [SOLVED] "Copy to Clipboard" console command - Parcellite

    I'm trying to make a python script that will take a screenshot using scrot, upload it to imageshack.us and then copy the image link to the clipboard (parcellite).
    The problem lies in the "copy to the clipboard" part. The documentation states that the command "parcellite string" will copy "string" to the clipboard, but it does not happend.
    $parcellite string
    $parcellite -o
    last thing copied, not "string"
    Also, a bunch of
    Xlib:  extension "Generic Event Extension" missing on display ":0.0".
    warnings hit me each time parcellite is called, but I think they are harmless.
    [SOLUTION]
    Using "echo string | xsel -i -b" instead of "parcellite string".

    Procyon wrote:
    I mean any result from pgrep parcel?
    X11 needs the it to be alive or the clipboard is erased. In xsel e.g.
    $ echo test | xsel -i -b
    $ xsel -o -b
    test
    $ pgrep xsel
    4567
    $ pkill xsel
    $ xsel -o -b
    (nothing)
    Although it seems nothing was ever copied in your case, because the previous contents are still there
    I looked for "pgrep parcel" in google and this page was the first result. *facepalm*
    But no, no results.
    I don't have xsel installed, so those tests are not valid. But after installing it, the output is exactly the same.
    But "echo string |  xsel -i -b" does the trick, without parcellite. Thank you.

  • [Solved] Urxvt + Tmux + wide consoles

    Is there anything magic you need to do in order to get urxvt and tmux be able to handle mouse coordinates past column 223? This works fine in konsole, and my vim works fine if it isn't run inside tmux, but it doesn't seem to like what urxvt is sending for mouse coordinates. I found the thread on sourceforge where it looks like tmux added support for this, but I'm not sure how to get urxvt to send the right codes?
    Thanks

    Byobu was my only arrow to you. Before this tool, I struggled a lot to have all the settings working together: zsh + tmux + vim.
    Now I have no problem anymore with theese "upgrades": oh_my_zsh + byobu + spf13.
    You could also have a look to the Mislav Marohnić's repackaged plugin.
    After, does urxvt support entirely both tmux and vim combined?

  • [Solved] no non-ASCII character input in rxvt-unicode

    Hello everyone,
    For some days now, I can't write any non-ASCII characters any more in rxvt-unicode and rxvt-unicode-patched. Unfortunately, downgrading the rxvt-unicode package doesn't seem to help. To have at least a temporary solution, I'd like to know at least which packages I could try to downgrade as well. Any ideas, anyone?
    greez,
    maxmin

    When I try to type a non-ASCII-character I get nothing at all. This happens with my custom keyboard layout (modified programmer dvorak) and in some layouts I already tried (us: altgr-intl, ch, de and fr)
    When I paste a non-ASCII characters in rxvt-unicode I get
    maxmin ~ $ ?
    This happens only on my x86_64 desktop which is more up to date than my i686 laptop. (I'm afraid now to do any updates.)
    EDIT: I'm sorry, I don't know what you mean with locale settings. What do you mean with that?
    EDIT2: Maybe just typing locale in the terminal is what you mean:
    maxmin ~ $ locale
    locale: Cannot set LC_CTYPE to default locale: No such file or directory
    locale: Cannot set LC_MESSAGES to default locale: No such file or directory
    locale: Cannot set LC_ALL to default locale: No such file or directory
    LANG=en_US.utf8
    LC_CTYPE="en_US.utf8"
    LC_NUMERIC="en_US.utf8"
    LC_TIME="en_US.utf8"
    LC_COLLATE="en_US.utf8"
    LC_MONETARY="en_US.utf8"
    LC_MESSAGES="en_US.utf8"
    LC_PAPER="en_US.utf8"
    LC_NAME="en_US.utf8"
    LC_ADDRESS="en_US.utf8"
    LC_TELEPHONE="en_US.utf8"
    LC_MEASUREMENT="en_US.utf8"
    LC_IDENTIFICATION="en_US.utf8"
    LC_ALL=
    With other terminal emulators I get sometimes also nothing and sometimes right displayed but wrong interpreted character in vim. I didn't take notes while doing that but I'll try again if needed.

  • Unable to customize right Command key in system prefs on macbook pro

    Customizing the command key in the "Modifier Keys" menu in the keyboard settings in System Prefs on Mac OS X 10.6.4 only customizes the left command key. The right command key remains immutable, deeply frustrating a constant emacs user, here.
    Sometimes I must use the built-in keyboard, alas.
    I use a programmer dvorak layout that I put together using Ukelele. I don't want to re-map Command in the layout itself, however, because sometimes I use a Kinesis, which I'd then have to re-map every time I switch computers (i.e. constantly, all day).
    Imo, this is a bug. Since the menu permits re-mapping of modifier keys, it should enact it completely.
    Is there a work-around?

    Oops. I was behind on my software updates.
    Problem Solved.

  • Dissapearing Albums

    My music collection is large enough for Albums to go missing without being immediately detected. I may be searching for an album only to find that it's not in the library or in my external hard drive where the Itunes media file is located. I am sure that this must be an itunes issue as I am not deleting the music myself and no-one accesses the computer or hard drive. I have tried searching the programme logs using console but have found nothing useful.
    Can someone either:
    1. Explain what is happening and how to fix it.
    or
    2. Give me some instructions as to how best use console to search for itunes programme logs to find when and why this is happening.
    Thanks!

    Hi there,
    Welcome at the Spotify Community!
    I'm sorry to hear Spotify isn't working correctly for you. Have you already tried to simply logout and login afterwards? Sometimes something simple as this already solves the problem.
    You may also try to fix it by reinstalling Spotify. To do that, please follow the steps in the link below:

  • How to get rid of colour spinning wheel on imac

    When I open safari coloured spinning wheel appears and locks up safari, I have to force quit to get out. It also appears briefly when other programmes are opened but doesn't seem to affect them.
    What is the cause and how can it be solved ?

    Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
    ☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
    ☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
    ☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
    The title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select
              SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages
    from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
              View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar at the top of the screen. Click the Clear Display icon in the toolbar. Then take one of the actions that you're having trouble with. Select any messages that appear in the Console window. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.
    The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of which is irrelevant to solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.
    Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
    Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.
    Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.

  • Xmonad keyboard layout

    Hoy there, gang.
    I have been scouring the internet for a solution, but the term "xmonad keyboard layout" just gives me loads of information about hot keys.
    I just want to change my key map back to programmer Dvorak. My terminal outside of Xmonad is still Dvorak (actually, bonus points for who ever tells me how to make that in to programmer Dvorak), but since installing Xmonad, my Xserver key map has changed back to Qwerty, and I can not find the simple solution (I imagine that it is a change in the xmonad.hs file?).

    Perhaps you were using gconf or similar to set it before?  Anyway, it has nothing to do with xmonad.  You need to set keyboard variant to "dvp".
    If you're using hal, you'll need to add something like this to the keymap file (e.g., '/etc/hal/fdi/policy/10-keymap.fdi'. See http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Xor … otplugging):
    <merge key="input.xkb.variant" type="string">dvp</merge>
    then restart hal + X.
    Or, if you use xorg.conf, add:
    Option "XkbLayout" "dvp"
    to the corresponding "InputDevice" section.
    As far as I can tell, a keymap has not been defined for the console.  It should not be difficult to find / create one, throw it in with the rest (/usr/share/kbd/keymaps/i386/dvorak) and set KEYMAP in /etc/rc.conf accordingly.  I've done this for a slightly modified dvorak layout.
