[Solved] Realtek RTL8188SU chip - unstable wifi

Hi All,
I have a wireless usb dongle using the above chip. lsusb says:
Belkin Components F7D1101 v1 Basic Wireless Adapter [Realtek RTL8188SU]
The wifi speed is very unstable (at the beginning of downloading each file, the speed is about 300KB/s, then goes down, down and down to 0). I'm sure that it's not because of my router. Does anybody know how to find where my problem is?
Thank you.
Edit: I would like to thank Xyne a lot. My wireless usb dongle doesn't mention about rtl8192 but he asked me to search for it in the forums and then I found this thread. The solution that works for me is changing the channel. I cannot express how I love the Arch community :-)

Search for "rtl8192" on the forum (link at the top left). There are numerous threads concerning the consistently poor performance of Realtek wifi cards. You will find instructions for changing some of the power management options which may reduce the rate of dropped connections, but they will keep dropping and speed will remain inconsistent and embarrassingly slow.
You can check which kernel modules your card is using with
lsmod | grep rtl
If you see rtl8192ce in that list, curse your vendor and head out to buy a new dongle. Of course, if your card is using something other than rtl8192* then maybe tweaking the module options will actually lead to decent performance.

  • [Solved] Realtek RTL8188SU wireless USB - not listed in ifconfig

The built-in wireless adaptor (based on ath5k) of my Acer Aspire One is really flaky (disappears completely after anywhere between 30 seconds and an hour), so I decided to buy a USB wireless-N adaptor, to get some stability and take advantage of my wireless-N router. After plugging it in and booting, it wasn't listed. This was due to the custom kernel I use (kernel-netbook, from the AUR) not having it compiled. So I recompiled it, selecting all the Realtek entries as modules. I rebooted into the new kernel, but still it wasn't discovered. I've tried using modprobe to load the drivers in (one by one, as the RTL8188SU doesn't actually have a driver by it's name, so I tried all the Realtek ones, rebooting in between), but still no luck - it's still not appearing under ifconfig.
I'm pretty noob when it comes to troubleshooting, but I'm learning. Just need a few pointers
What do I have to do to get it to appear in ifconfig? Do I have to blacklist my ath5k (can't see why, it's possible to have more than one wireless adaptor, surely??)
    Edit: http://www.realtek.com.tw/downloads/dow … =true#2282
If I understand this correctly, the driver isn't in the kernel and I need to download this??

Ok, just found out from the Debian wiki (http://wiki.debian.org/rtl819x), that the r8192s_usb driver was superseeded and removed from kernel 2.6.37 (whether this is Debian specific, I'm not sure) - I'm running 2.6.39, so it's not in my kernel. It's apparently been replaced by r8712u, which should be in the kernel, so I'm confused why I'm still having trouble? Would the command be "modprobe r8712u", or something different?
Edit: Ok, according to this - http://www.archlinux.org/packages/core/ … -firmware/ - the driver is included in this package, which I installed a couple of days ago. It's listed as "lib/firmware/rtlwifi/rtl8712u.bin", so.......how do I get it working?

  • Satellite P50-A-144: Intel WLAN driver update solves unstable WiFI

    The notebook Toshiba Satellite P50-A-144:
The current Toshiba Download Driver version is the 16.5.1 (OEM Version) and is already installed on the notebook, and the current Intel Download Driver version is the 16.10.0 (generic Version).
*This new version solves the problem of unstable WiFi/WLAN Internet connection.*
Will Toshiba have available soon the OEM version updated to the 16.10.0?
    Thank you.

Intel has released as of 06/26/2014 a new Driver Version 17.0.5.8 and
Toshiba up to 07/12/2014 still has not updated the corresponding Toshibas OEM Version,
either the previous Intels older Version 16.10.0.5 has not been updated by Toshiba.
It seems the Drivers update by Toshiba takes very very long time until they are ready to download on the Toshiba Support web page.
Unfortunatly, Intel does not recommend to install the generic Driver on Toshiba-OEM Systems, because they do not provide support in case of issues after installation, and suggest to get the Update directly from Toshiba, so there is no other chance, just to wait for the Update until Toshiba released the OEM-Version.
    Are there other alternatives?

  • Thinkpad T440p unstable wifi connection

I purchased a Thinkpad T440p during last Christmas. I always have unstable wifi connection. I have updated all the drivers, changed to different wifi enrionments, and restored my laptop to factory conditions. Still, it is very unstable. Anybody here can give out possible solutions? I know I am within the warranty period. But I am using laptop everyday, and don't want to ship it to Lenovo for a long-time fix.

    Try this driver?

  • Unstable wifi on battery

    Hi all,
Recently I started having problems with my laptop's wifi. It started losing packets, which caused the network being very unstable, even when I am standing next to the router. However, it did not do this all the time. This made it hard to debug. After some weeks, I now found out that it has to do with running on battery. If I run on battery, packets drop and when I run with the power cable attached, the wifi is just fine.
I have an Alienware M17x R4 running arch linux in combination with xfce. My wireless card is the Intel Corporation Centrino Wireless-N 2230 (rev c4).
I made 2 test reports with mtr connecting to google, to compare the situation with and without powercable. You can clearly see the difference.

I have no idea what it mght do, but xfce4-power-manager also installs upower.
How about this.  Can you boot up to the multi-user.target (hopefully without also starting any of teh xfce4 stuff -- particularly upower) and then use the internets from there.  See if the battery powered machine in the multi-user.target acts the same way.  I'd suggest even using basic networking tools to connect, though I think netctl would also do the trick, since it is just a set of shell scripts around those tools.
I also have an Intel Centrino 2230, and it was a great card (I have since moved on to the only dual band card that is usable with my machine).  I do have a coupel friends though who had nothing but problems with the iwlwifi module in general.  I have seen a lot of work going into the iwlwifi module in terms of kernel commits, so hopefully things are getting better.  I have been meaning to give that card another go, just to see.  Maybe I'll do that sometime this weekend.  If I get around to it, I'll report back on how things are with 3.11rc6.

  • Unstable WiFi on NB200

I have a recently bought NB200. I have 10Mbit Virgin Media (Cable ISP) into my house then to a wireless router. The connection is completely problem free via my iPhone, iPod Touch and other laptop.
However, when connecting via this new nb200 it is unstable. The connection may be fine for hours, or break mutliple times within minutes. When the connection breaks my wireless connection within Windows shows as being fine, with Excellent signal strength.
The only way to repair it is to reboot, or run the Windows Network Diagnostic Utility, which reports that nothing is wrong, but somehow repairs the connection....
Please help as this is driving me crazy. If this cant be resolved the machine will have to be returned I think.

    Hi
Its not easy to say why your WiFi connection is unstable
First of all I would try to update the WLAN driver. Latest version can be found on the Toshiba website if you search for your model (NB200). Download and install it.
Make also sure that your BIOS version is up to date. You can get it on the Toshiba website too. Sometimes I can read here that WLAN connection works stable after such an update.
Last but not least try updating the firmware of your router. I had a similar issue that WLAN connection wasnt stable but after firmware update it was solved. You can get it on the manufactures website.
    Good luck! :)

    HI,
I id install and start to use arch just two weeks ago :-)
I was able to solve problems until now.
I am not sure if this is problem of arch kernel, maybe it will be general.
I did insert PCI wifi card to my PC with arch. Card is Z-COM XI-626 : LAST LINE:

okay, I did blacklist hostap_pci, I did find out that with orinoco_pci module it is more stable
    BUT
sometimes it hang up with same error message

  • 4.3 upgrade issues - battery drain, unstable WiFi, freezing, wake-up lag/freeze

I've been (also) experiencing issues since my Galaxy S3 was pushed the 4.3 update on the morning of 1/11/2014.  The worst is the battery drain - losing more than 50% of battery life within 4 hours of 100% with only minor texting during that time - with the charging process taking nearly 3 times longer to fully recharge.  The moment it's removed from the power cord, it drops to 98%.  This was not happening before update.
Today, I called Verizon's technical support who recommended a factory restore.  Since I read endless posts/experiences of this not resolving the issues, I chose not to take that path and to work with Samsung to understand when a fix would be pushed.  After 45 minutes on the phone with Samsung explaining the issues as if they'd never heard of such problems with the update - I was told that I clearly had water damage to my battery which was causing all of my issues.  Sure, and everyone else who owns an S3 in these forums has the same water damage.  Of course, the moment I asked to speak with the Samsung rep's superior, our phone connection grew dim, sputtered as if it were a bad mobile connection, and suddenly disconnected.
I experience the "Unstable Internet Connection" to WiFi when no other phones have issues with these networks.  They're the same networks I've always used - but since the update, they're now "unstable".
The lag to wake up when I receive a call or text sometimes takes 10 swipes and a few freezes before it finally unlocks.
I've downloaded no new apps since the upgrade, yet apps I used regularly prior to the upgrade now randomly freeze on me, requiring me to remove the battery to restart the phone.
Unless Verizon is willing to let me out of the 2-year contract since I'm not able to use my phone in the manner to which we'd agreed in that contract, they had better start acknowledging a large-scale problem with this update and work dilligently with Samsung for a speedy resolution.  Just seems odd that this update was pulled back in November for these exact issues, yet Verizon chose to allow it to be pushed to their S3 users in January without resolution from Samsung.  Gee, wonder if it's so we'll all upgrade to the S5 as it's release is a few months off.   Hmmmm.
    http://www.sammobile.com/2013/11/18/samsung-delivers-official-statement-regarding-galaxy-s3s-android-4-3-update-issues/

I agree, the upgrade is awful.  All I can do is complain publicly and if all of us do, maybe something will be done sooner.

  • [Solved] Can't connecto to wifi using NetworkManager

    Hello,
for some reasons, I can't connect to my WiFi network using NetworkManager. What's weird, is that my network and all the other networks around coming from my neighbours' houses are displayed, but I can't connect to any of them, including mine...
The wired connection works just fine (that's why I'm able to post this message), but I can't get the wireless one to work. NetworkManager is configured to use dhcpcd for dhcp by the way.
When I try to connect I usually don't get any notifications, but if I press several times the connect button this will be displayed
    Typing systemctl --type=service outputs this.

I know my wireless chip works fine because this computer could connect to network with arch previously.
Any idea what the problem could be? Do not hesitate to ask for more information. I just didn't post a lot because I didn't know which ones would be useful

  • WIFI problems solved with D-Link USB WIFI adapter...

I have a brand new Macbook Air and I have persistent problems connecting to my home wifi network. Sometimes I can connect to the router but not the internet, but usually Airport won't connect at all: it keeps asking me for the password for our home network (even though it's stored), so I re-enter the password, but it still can't connect. When it gets to this point I know that I either have to live without internet for the rest of the day, or disrupt my work and everyone else in the household by rebooting my computer and reseting the router (sometimes just one of these actions will work, but it's unpredictable).
So I bought a D-Link DWA-125 USB wireless adapter and installed drivers from Ralink (http://www.ralinktech.com/support.php?s=3) and it pretty much solves the issue.
I don't know what further proof Apple needs that this is a problem with the Air and not the internet/router/etc. It's rather comical that I have to use an ugly old USB adapter to get a brand new Macbook Air to connect to internet in my own home.

I've had my Macbook for 2 yrs and the wifi basically never worked - only when I'm right next to the router, at school, or of course the Apple Store. I tried to get apple to fix it under AppleCare, but since it was working perfectly in the store, they said there was nothing they could do.
If your Mac works well at school, or the Apple Store but not at home, the problem definetly  is not the Mac and therefore there is no need to buy a external usb wifi device.
You better will fix the settings of your home router and after that your Mac will be fast and smooth on your home wifi.
I've had only on very rare situations a problem with d-link routers over the years and think (if not damaged) even your d-link will work pretty good with your Mac.
Would you be so kind and explain the settings of your home router and what model it is?

  • Unstable WiFi connectivity in macbook pro (Retina, 13-inch, Late 2013)

    Hi guys!
My macbook pro is connected to the internet via WiFi router, and it very often it happens that my macbook loses connectivity with it. WiFi logo shows the same signal strength, but all browsers (Safari & Chrome) can't load webpages.
This issue can be solved by turning WiFi on and off, but it happens again and again. It looks like connectivity loses when Macbook goes in sleep mode and get's back from it, but sometimes connectivity issues happen even without sleep mode switching.
I found in the internet that this issue can be solved by turning off Bluetooth and tried, but it didn't help.
I totally understand that from one point of view this issue is not a big deal, but we are speaking about Apple device, and before I thought that this brand is synonime for ultimate quality and reliability. So please help me with this issue and bring back my faith in Apple;)

Please test after taking each of the following steps that you haven't already tried. Stop when the problem is resolved. Back up all data before making any changes.
    Step 1
Take the applicable steps in this support article. The Wireless Diagnostics program generates a large file of information about your system, which would be used by Apple Engineering in case of a support incident. Don't post the contents here.
    Step 2
Disconnect all USB 3 devices. If you don't know which are USB 3, disconnect all USB devices except keyboard and mouse.
    Step 3
If you're not using a wireless keyboard or trackpad, disable Bluetooth by selecting Turn Bluetooth Off from the menu with the Bluetooth icon. If you don't have that menu, open the Bluetooth preference pane in System Preferences and check the box marked Show Bluetooth in menu bar. Test. If you find that Wi-Fi works better with Bluetooth disabled, you should use the 5 GHz Wi-Fi band. Your router may not support it; in that case, you need a new router.
    Step 4
Open the Network pane in System Preferences and make a note of your settings in the Wi-Fi service. It may be helpful to take screenshots of the various tabs in the preference pane. If the preference pane is locked, unlock it by clicking the padlock icon and entering your administrator password. Delete Wi-Fi from the service list on the left by selecting it and clicking the minus-sign button at the bottom. Then recreate the service by clicking the plus-sign button and following the prompts.
    Step 5
    Reset the System Management Controller.
    Step 6
Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store, or go to another authorized service center.

  • Did the August OS update to 4.2.2 solve the Xperia Tablet Z Wifi disconnect problem?

we are wanting to purchase 2 Experia Tablet Z's to replace our iPads that we were ever so happy to dump and are looking for new Android tablets but need to know that the OS update cured the known WiFi disconnect issue since we use WiFi in our home for our tablets and smart phones (everything else is hardwired) AND also like to tether our tablets to our smart phones when away from home.
    Opinions appreciated — thanks
    Solved!

I've got a white 32gb wifi US Tablet Z and love it.  I'm running 4.2.2 and have no issues.  None.

  • [SOLVED] NetworkManager unable to enable Wifi

Edit: Finally solved. Disabling the "acer_wmi" module did the trick.
I've been using NetworkManager on my laptop for quite some time now, and it always did a good job... until now!
And in the middle of quite a busy week as well! Damn Murphy...
I noticed there was an update for it and Archer as I am, I of course updated from networkmanager-0.8.1-1-x86_64 and network-manager-applet-0.8.1-2-x86_64, to networkmanager-0.8.2-3-x86_64 and network-manager-applet-0.8.2-2-x86_64.
When updating I got a message that filesystem permissions of /var/lib/NetworkManager we're set to 755, and the package expected 700.
Should not be a problem, but I set the permissions to 700 for good measure.
Next boot, using the new version, I was unable to get NetworkManager to engage my Wifi. "Enable Wireless" just did nothing. It's not turning on my Wifi and nm-applet is not marking it as active either, no matter how many times I click it. I also tried disabling Networking and re-enabling it all, no luck.
Reloaded nm-applet a couple of times, no dice. Restarted the networkmanager deamon as well, still nothing.
nm-applet does not produce any error messages for me to check out, only things it tells me when I kill and start it:
** Message: applet now removed from the notification area
** Message: applet now embedded in the notification area
It only talks about placing itself in the notification area, which is in working order.
My laptop is a Sony Vaio VPCY11S1E (know as Sony Vaio Y series, first model), Wifi card is an Atheros AR9285 (ath9k) and it runs up-to-date Arch x86_64. I run a hand configured -ck patched kernel and also the Arch regular kernel.
Come to think of it, I did not try the stock kernel yet, but I doubt it's the cause of the problem.
Because I reverted back to NetworkManager 0.8.1 and it's working like it always did again.
So I got working Wifi with NM 0.8.1, no working Wifi with 0.8.2.
Any pointers or insights you might have are greatly appreciated!

Oh sorry. I did do that, a bit.
I have a tail of the everything.log outputted to my desktop, and noticed NetworkManager is deactivating the Wifi (Reason 2).
I'm gonna check out what "Reason 2" might mean, and i'll see if I can post a nice snippet of the log here...

    Nov 23 15:01:03 localhost NetworkManager[7888]: <info> (wlan0): deactivating device (reason: 2).
    And that's where it ends.
What jumps out is: "Nov 23 15:01:03 localhost NetworkManager[7888]: <info> WiFi disabled by radio killswitch; enabled by state file"
Which is incorrect, the switch is ON. I also tried switching it OFF and ON again (IT Crowd! ). No effect.
I also see it's seeing multiple killswitches, where I only have one. But that's not the real problem here.
Somehow NM 0.8.2 is thinking my Wifi killswitch is turned off when it isn't.
To see if NM 0.8.1 does anything different, I checked out it's log, which looks like this:

    Nov 23 15:03:54 localhost NetworkManager[8714]: <info> (wlan0): supplicant interface state: starting -> ready
NM 0.8.2 stops after the message "deactivating the device (reason: 2)."

  • [SOLVED] MBA 5,2 (2012) wifi powersave doesn't work

    Hi all,
Though wifi works out of the box,  powersaving doesn't on my MBA 5,2 (late 2012). The situation dates back to at least the 3.7.* kernels, and possibly before. Is this a known issue? Or perhaps is it solvable?
    Many thanks!

    Kernel driver in use: bcma-pci-bridge
bcma-pci-bridge seems to be a driver, not a module so modinfo does give anything.
bcma and brcmsmac are both loaded, as are the modules modinfo say they depend on (mac80211,bcma,brcmutil,cfg80211,cordic)
modinfo -p yields nothing for either bcma or brcmsmac, so there can be no parameters to pass on the kernel, I think.
I tried unloading and reloading the modules, to no avail....
