Unstable wifi on battery

Hi all,
Recently I started having problems with my laptop's wifi. It started losing packets, which caused the network being very unstable, even when I am standing next to the router. However, it did not do this all the time. This made it hard to debug. After some weeks, I now found out that it has to do with running on battery. If I run on battery, packets drop and when I run with the power cable attached, the wifi is just fine.
I have an Alienware M17x R4 running arch linux in combination with xfce. My wireless card is the Intel Corporation Centrino Wireless-N 2230 (rev c4).
I made 2 test reports with mtr connecting to google, to compare the situation with and without powercable. You can clearly see the difference.

I also tried turning the powersave off with
iw wlp8s0 set power_save off
but this didn't make any difference.
Does anyone know how to solve this?

I have no idea what it mght do, but xfce4-power-manager also installs upower.
How about this.  Can you boot up to the multi-user.target (hopefully without also starting any of teh xfce4 stuff -- particularly upower) and then use the internets from there.  See if the battery powered machine in the multi-user.target acts the same way.  I'd suggest even using basic networking tools to connect, though I think netctl would also do the trick, since it is just a set of shell scripts around those tools.
I also have an Intel Centrino 2230, and it was a great card (I have since moved on to the only dual band card that is usable with my machine).  I do have a coupel friends though who had nothing but problems with the iwlwifi module in general.  I have seen a lot of work going into the iwlwifi module in terms of kernel commits, so hopefully things are getting better.  I have been meaning to give that card another go, just to see.  Maybe I'll do that sometime this weekend.  If I get around to it, I'll report back on how things are with 3.11rc6.

  • WiFi loss & battery drain a software issue, not hardware

I wrote the commentary below after installing IOS 7 on a 4S and resultantly losing WiFi entirely and enduring major battery drain issues. After two trips to the Apple store and meeting with their techs at the "genius" bar, I was emphatically told that the issues were entirely hardware related and the only solution was to purchase a new phone. I was told there was nothing more to be done because the hardware was defective... either just use the not-so-smart phone as it is or buy a new smart one.
Well, here's an update on that story. I installed 7.0.4 last night and instantly my WiFi was back on and working. So far today, the battery seems to be back to normal as well, not draining like a giant hole in the levee. I don't know if this will be the same story for anyone else with similar problems. But I can say that the hardware-caused-storyline was bogus. Entirely time coincident with a software update (IOS 7), I lost WiFi and battery. And equally relative to the 7.0.4 update I immediately regained WiFi and battery.
I'm curious if others have experienced this same thing? And if Apple has an official explanation?
    Oct 14, 2013 12:37 PM
I  had a perfectly functioning iPhone 4S (64 GB) that I have been very   happy with and has always been glitch-free, good battery time, no   complaints. Until installing IOS 7.
Among other things, immediately upon "upgrading" to IOS 7 I have lost WiFi entirely (button greyed out).
Next, I found the battery drains to the point where I have to keep it   charging 2-3 times per day with extremely small phone usage. In a  normal  day, with 2-3 text messages, checking email 3-4 times and no  phone  calls, I am down to 30% battery by 3pm. Two days ago I turned  airplane  mode on at 9am with 98% battery and by 4pm batter was at 45%  with  airplane mode still on.
There are other problems, but those are the two primary issues.
I   went to the Apple store two times. The first time the technician   verified my problem, said there was nothing that could be done because   it's a hardware problem now and I would have to buy a new phone at full   price (my current cell contract isn't up until March 2014). He  suggested  a complete phone reset to "new phone" which I did and which  solved  nothing whatsoever. Same issues exist.
On  my second  trip to Apple just yesterday the technician looked it over,  checked the  battery function, etc. and I was told that the battery is  fine but that  the processor or something in the phone is working  overtime and draining  the battery. And again, I was told there is  nothing Apple can do other  than swap out the phone, though, this time  they would replace it for  $199.
I  was tempted to pay the $199 for a new 4S  that the technician said  would come with IOS 6. But so far I have  refused that offer without  some assurance that future IOS upgrades  wouldn't harm that phone as  well. Also, if I paid this now, then I  wouldn't upgrade when my  contract ended with Verizon and I was looking  forward to perhaps  getting a 5S then. I know that it's impossible to  assure that these  upgrade issues won't happen again to the next phone,  which finally  leads me to my questions...
Considering   the options I've been given thus far, what would someone more in the   know suggest I do? Is there any possibility of a software fix or did  the  "upgraded" software probably ruin the hardware?
As   a longtime Apple fan and someone who has owned the first Mac laptop  and  early desktops, I don't understand why Apple doesn't have better   customer service policies regarding their own software directly   affecting their own hardware adversely.

I have the same problem with WiFi and off, the issue was Google Play services, this is what I did settings > apps > all > google play services > clear data > uninstall updates > restart the phone > update the app > check again .

  • Satellite P50-A-144: Intel WLAN driver update solves unstable WiFI

    The notebook Toshiba Satellite P50-A-144:
The current Toshiba Download Driver version is the 16.5.1 (OEM Version) and is already installed on the notebook, and the current Intel Download Driver version is the 16.10.0 (generic Version).
*This new version solves the problem of unstable WiFi/WLAN Internet connection.*
Will Toshiba have available soon the OEM version updated to the 16.10.0?
    Thank you.

Intel has released as of 06/26/2014 a new Driver Version 17.0.5.8 and
Toshiba up to 07/12/2014 still has not updated the corresponding Toshibas OEM Version,
either the previous Intels older Version 16.10.0.5 has not been updated by Toshiba.
It seems the Drivers update by Toshiba takes very very long time until they are ready to download on the Toshiba Support web page.
Unfortunatly, Intel does not recommend to install the generic Driver on Toshiba-OEM Systems, because they do not provide support in case of issues after installation, and suggest to get the Update directly from Toshiba, so there is no other chance, just to wait for the Update until Toshiba released the OEM-Version.
    Are there other alternatives?

  • Thinkpad T440p unstable wifi connection

I purchased a Thinkpad T440p during last Christmas. I always have unstable wifi connection. I have updated all the drivers, changed to different wifi enrionments, and restored my laptop to factory conditions. Still, it is very unstable. Anybody here can give out possible solutions? I know I am within the warranty period. But I am using laptop everyday, and don't want to ship it to Lenovo for a long-time fix.

    Try this driver?

  • 4.3 upgrade issues - battery drain, unstable WiFi, freezing, wake-up lag/freeze

I've been (also) experiencing issues since my Galaxy S3 was pushed the 4.3 update on the morning of 1/11/2014.  The worst is the battery drain - losing more than 50% of battery life within 4 hours of 100% with only minor texting during that time - with the charging process taking nearly 3 times longer to fully recharge.  The moment it's removed from the power cord, it drops to 98%.  This was not happening before update.
Today, I called Verizon's technical support who recommended a factory restore.  Since I read endless posts/experiences of this not resolving the issues, I chose not to take that path and to work with Samsung to understand when a fix would be pushed.  After 45 minutes on the phone with Samsung explaining the issues as if they'd never heard of such problems with the update - I was told that I clearly had water damage to my battery which was causing all of my issues.  Sure, and everyone else who owns an S3 in these forums has the same water damage.  Of course, the moment I asked to speak with the Samsung rep's superior, our phone connection grew dim, sputtered as if it were a bad mobile connection, and suddenly disconnected.
I experience the "Unstable Internet Connection" to WiFi when no other phones have issues with these networks.  They're the same networks I've always used - but since the update, they're now "unstable".
The lag to wake up when I receive a call or text sometimes takes 10 swipes and a few freezes before it finally unlocks.
I've downloaded no new apps since the upgrade, yet apps I used regularly prior to the upgrade now randomly freeze on me, requiring me to remove the battery to restart the phone.
Unless Verizon is willing to let me out of the 2-year contract since I'm not able to use my phone in the manner to which we'd agreed in that contract, they had better start acknowledging a large-scale problem with this update and work dilligently with Samsung for a speedy resolution.  Just seems odd that this update was pulled back in November for these exact issues, yet Verizon chose to allow it to be pushed to their S3 users in January without resolution from Samsung.  Gee, wonder if it's so we'll all upgrade to the S5 as it's release is a few months off.   Hmmmm.
    http://www.sammobile.com/2013/11/18/samsung-delivers-official-statement-regarding-galaxy-s3s-android-4-3-update-issues/

I agree, the upgrade is awful.  All I can do is complain publicly and if all of us do, maybe something will be done sooner.

  • Unstable WiFi on NB200

I have a recently bought NB200. I have 10Mbit Virgin Media (Cable ISP) into my house then to a wireless router. The connection is completely problem free via my iPhone, iPod Touch and other laptop.
However, when connecting via this new nb200 it is unstable. The connection may be fine for hours, or break mutliple times within minutes. When the connection breaks my wireless connection within Windows shows as being fine, with Excellent signal strength.
The only way to repair it is to reboot, or run the Windows Network Diagnostic Utility, which reports that nothing is wrong, but somehow repairs the connection....
Please help as this is driving me crazy. If this cant be resolved the machine will have to be returned I think.

    Hi
Its not easy to say why your WiFi connection is unstable
First of all I would try to update the WLAN driver. Latest version can be found on the Toshiba website if you search for your model (NB200). Download and install it.
Make also sure that your BIOS version is up to date. You can get it on the Toshiba website too. Sometimes I can read here that WLAN connection works stable after such an update.
Last but not least try updating the firmware of your router. I had a similar issue that WLAN connection wasnt stable but after firmware update it was solved. You can get it on the manufactures website.
    Good luck! :)

  • Problems with 8220 WiFi and battery

I'm not sure if these 2 problems are related. I've had a 8220 for 11 months and notice my battery life has really deteriorated the last few days. at the same time accessing WiFi from my phone is not as reliable. I know there is no problem with my Wifi as I have no problem accessing it from my laptop from the same connection.
Is this problem related to my battery? or are there other ways to improve WiFi connections from my 8220.
    thanks

I had exactly the same problem with WiFi calls (see my old posts on dropped calls).  I tested my phone in another WiFi location (in a coffee shop) and didn't have problems.  Even though my computer recognized the signal, my phone dropped the calls.  I changed my router and verified that all phones jacks (except the router) were using DSL filters.  Since then, the problem disappeared (except when I synch music).
When outside, the phone will periodically drop calls moving between WiFi and edge networks.  However, I usually turn off the WiFi network anyway to conserve batteries.  While at home, the WiFi connection is more reliable if I turn off the edge network so the phone stays on WiFi and doesn't look for another network.  By default, I set my preferences to WiFi at home, so even if I forget to turn off the edge network, it still looks for WiFi.

  • Replacement T61 WiFi and Battery

    Hey Thinkpadders,
    The short version:
I have a T61 7662-CTO 14.1" widescreen, circa 2007. I live in Australia and am looking to replace my wireless card and battery - from local suppliers if possible.
    The long version:
My wireless card has been flakey since the day I recieved my laptop. The WiFi card in my system is an Atheros 11b/g Wireless LAN Mini PCI Express Adapter II (sorry i dont know the FRU). The card works most of the time BUT often does not wake up when I put my laptop to sleep. Occasionally it wont even work after a cold boot. The only way to get the wireless working is to reboot (sometimes more than once). Anyway this is extremely annoying. Originally I thought it was a driver issue. After four years, two motherboards and five operating system I am sure I just got a dodgy card and I should do something about it! What are my replacement options (preferably intel) and from where?
I would also like to replace my battery. It recently went from very low capacity to absolutely none. Now I cannot operate without AC for any length of time. The FRU of my battery is 42T5229. It is a 9 cell battery but i would like to replace it with the (cheaper) 6 cell equivalent. Where is the best place to get these? Are third party (non-lenovo) batteries dodgy?
    Thanks all!
Hey, careful, man, there's a beverage here!

    Hello,
For the Wi-Fi card, you will want to make sure you get a model with a Lenovo FRU on it to ensure it is whitelisted in the BIOS.  From looking at this driver change log on Lenovo's web site, I believe the Intel Wireless WiFi Link 4965AGN (FRU: 42T0865) will work in your model of T61 but hopefully someone who has a 7662-CTO model will confirm this.
As far as the other questions about the battery and a local supplier, I am afraid I don't have a good answer there, but I am sure some of the other forum members can reply with answers to those questions.

  • WiFi and Battery Power question

I've noticed that while in my house, if I leave my iPhone connected to my wifi network, when I unlock the phone, the "edge" logo is up for a few seconds until it reconnects to my wifi.
When the phone is locked, if the wifi is still enabled, does it drain the same amount of power as if it was locked with wifi disabled?

    Hey Tim,
The iPhone battery web page describes this and other tips to help get the most from your iPhones battery charge.
"Wi-Fi: Wi-Fi consumes power even if you are not using its features to connect to a network. You can turn it off to save power. Go to Settings > General > Network > Wi-Fi."

    Mperez3100 wrote:
    Hi,
How can I Test my iPad WiFi & battery? is there a hardware test?
    A real easy test...
Using the battery level meter in this manner is comparable to using your car's fuel gauge to calculate miles per gallon.  The only thing that matters is the total amount of operating time from full charge to auto-shutdown.
Use the wall-mount charger that came with the iPad and charge overnight.  Admittedly the labeling is hard to read but, if you use a magnifier and squint your eyes, you'll see "Output 5.1V, 2.1A."  The symbol between volts and amps is the symbol for DC.  Do NOT use an iPhone charger.  Do NOT use an iPod charger.  Then, operate it normally until auto shut-down (ignore any low level alerts that may appear).  An irony is that doing that test to determine the total operating time is also the exact procedure necessary to calibrate the battery level meter.
I'm not claiming that you do not have a problem.  I am stating, however, that we don't yet know whether or not a battery problem exists.
    According to Apple:
    Use Your iPad Regularly
For proper reporting of the battery’s state of charge, be sure to go through at least one charge cycle per month (charging the battery to 100% and then completely running it down).
Elsewhere, Apple elaborates and explains that two half-discharges (or four quarter-discharges, etc.) equals one full discharge.

Been having trouble with a co-worker's t430. It cannot connect to WiFi unless the battery is removed and then re-inserted. Once connected WiFi is strong and reliable. This seems to have started a few weeks ago without any notice. I'm thinking a power setting? I have also tried replacing the battery and same problem. Both batteries hold strong charges and are in "good" condition. Any suggestions?

  • Since upgrading to 8.1 not connecting to WiFi and battery is going dead after 2-3 hours

Unfortunately, like most people I upgraded my iPhone 5 to the IOS 8.1.  Now I cannot connect to WIFI and my battery is draining after 2 - 3 hours.  I have deleted most of my apps but still no luck.  What a disaster.  Samsung is looking better and better, can anyone help before I take drastic measures and trade this phone in.

okay i managed to fix the issue with the graphics on archeage, everything no longer appears multiplied in different colors.
but i am still having the pixle issue.
But now i have also discovered a new problem and thought it wouldn't hurt to post it here also.
My mouse has become supper sensitive when playing my games, one little touch when trying to rotate the screen sends it into a frenzy and i end up looking at the sky or my characters feet. i didn't notice this before as i didn't even attempt to move with
the multiple color images everywhere. Also when holding down my screen rotation button it continues to rotate in that direction even though i am no longer moving the mouse that way.
I did notice that there was a patch for mouse issues so i tried to install it but it said i didn't have the requirements for it, so i assume it was included with the 8.1 update.
I have tried adjusting the settings in the games for mouse sensitivity, and it does not effect it, i even tried to adjust the computers but could not find the setting for what i was after. The mouse rotation button is holding the left or right mouse button
down and moving the cursor in the direction you want it to move. i couldn't see anything there that can help with that as the cursor speed is fine, its only happens when i try to rotate the screen.
Any help on this and my pixle issue would be greatly appreciated!
