[SOLVED] "removing leftover files" boot messages

When I boot, there's a line saying "removing leftover files" : what it is referring to, exactly? What are those leftover files?

The answer is in /etc/rc.sysinit:
/etc/nologin
/etc/shutdownpid
/var/lock/*
/tmp/* and /tmp/.*
/forcefsck
Files in /var/run

  • Boot hangs at the "Removing Leftover Files" stage

I just set up my /var on reiser4 again but i have a weird issue.
When i boot my 2.6.11-cko2 kernel it hangs at the "Removing Leftover Files" stage but it boots fine with 2.6.11-cko4 and boots fine with an old 2.6.9-nitro4.
So it can't be permissions can it?  I used the same config for the -cko4 kernel as I used for -cko2 so they are configured the same.
And I can't just switch to -cko4 because that annoying cdrecord crash is back AGAIN!

I've got a new install (first time I've installed Arch, BTW -- and I'm fairly impressed) that is doing the same thing. My filesystems are ext3, for what that's worth. Usually when it hangs I can hard reboot the system and it will go past it on the restart, but I've had a couple of times where it has hung on consecutive boots. Would it be worth hacking that part of rc.sysinit to see if it is a specific step in the process that is causing the hang?
EDIT: I've gone ahead and added stat_busy/stat_done calls around each of the steps in that part of the boot process in rc.sysinit, as of late yesterday to see if there is any consistency on where the hang occurs. Interestingly -- or not, perhaps, I haven't had it hang yet... I'll keep an eye on it, and post more if I see a pattern.

  • [SOLVED] Stop first 20 boot messages clearing

How to stop the first 20 or so, boot messages clearing? Petty sure this happened after a previous systemd update.
I know about changing TTYVTDisallocate to no - https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Sy … er_boot.3F - but this only keeps the remaining messages on screen.

Thanks for posting this - really appreciate it.
    1. Enabled 'early KMS start' by adding radeon to MODULES line in /etc/mkinitcpio.conf:
    https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/KM … _KMS_start
This was needed to stop console is being reset by the graphics module in Late KMS Start (default) thus clearing boot messages before module was loaded.
OK. So I guess early KMS is not my problem .
    2. Change TTYVTDisallocate to no in [email protected] to stop boot message clearing:
    https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Di … t_Messages
This does not seem like the right way to do this but I'm not entirely sure what is. I think that what is in that directory should be just a symlink.
The recommended way to edit unit files is at https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Sy … unit_files. However, I'm not clear quite how to apply that in this case. What I'm currently trying is
    $ cat /etc/systemd/system/[email protected]/TTYVTDisallocate-BLOCK.conf
    [Service]
    TTYVTDisallocate=no
However this will affect all VTs generated from the template. Does anybody know if it is bad to have TTYVTDisallocate set to false for tty{2,3,...}?
EDIT: Or are the other VTs generated from something else? It makes no sense to me they'd be generated from the template in /usr/lib/systemd/system since surely TTYVTDisallocate is inappropriate for the other ttys? Doesn't disallocating it make it unavailable for login etc.? Or have I misunderstood?
    3. Increased scrollback for console by adding fbcon=scrollback:300k to /boot/syslinux/syslinux.cfg.
    https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Scrollback_buffer
Did you also append xxxfb as the wiki says? If so, what did you use? I'm confused because it mentions the name of your video driver but I'm not sure what that is since this is not concerned with X.

The /etc/skel folder is (optionally) used when creating a new user as a template for their home directory. By default it usually only has shell config files and X initialisation files, but you (as a system administrator) can add files to it that you want new users to have in their home folders.
The following is a list of official packages that install files to /etc/skel:
$ foreach package in $(pkgfile -qg "/etc/skel/*"); do echo "$package:"; pkgfile -lq $package | grep "/etc/skel/."; echo; done
    bash:
    /etc/skel/.bash_logout
    /etc/skel/.bash_profile
    /etc/skel/.bashrc
    grml-zsh-config:
    /etc/skel/.zshrc
    screen:
    /etc/skel/.screenrc
    xorg-xinit:
    /etc/skel/.xinitrc
    /etc/skel/.xsession
    mksh:
    /etc/skel/.mkshrc
If you didn't copy these files yourself, perhaps they were added by an AUR package (or more likely, several), check with 'pacman -Qo /path/to/file' for several of the files to see if any are owned by unofficial packages. If they are, I would check with the maintainer to see if this is intended (it seems highly irregular in my opinion, and I'd avoid using any packages that polluted my filesystem in such a manner). If they are not owned by a package, then you (or someone else with root access on your installaion) must have created them manually. If it wasn't you, and you don't think you created them manually, check your logs for suspicious activity, and make sure you haven't been compromised. You can remove the files if you don't need them.

  • I keep getting blue screen and error message to remove this file from system. spooldr.sys

HP Officejet 4500 Wireless All-in-One Printer - G510n    w/operating system     Windows XP Professional
I installed the printer in February and the disk did not finalize the setup process.  I went online and
down loaded the drivers and software that was offered from the HP website.
The printer works, but as the months have gone along, I keep getting updates for the printer and
the system needs to reboot and it does automatically.
Now I am getting a blue screen with a critical dump error message.  HP error reporting keeps sending
the same message back to restore to earlier date before the updates.  That worked for awhile.  Now
HP Error system says that malware has corrupted and needs to remove system file     spooldr.sys
Is this in your driver software.  Spooldr is the system that caches pages of data for printing in chronological
    order....
Can I uninstall my software and drivers and change to the plain & simple, print and scan to prevent the
spool driver from loading to my system?

Thank you for your input.  But, It is amazing that you can tell me that I was infected with  rootkit.
Without information as to how to fix, your information is after the fact and useless.
I used the Safety Scanner provided to me by HP.  A full scan didn't detect any Malware in any files on my system.  But the last screen dump provided the information that   spooldr.sys  was corrupted and  needed
    to be removed.
Coming into HP Form, I did read on the HP website that my system Windows XP Professional was not listed
and noted that the software may have not been just what I needed.  This was the reason for the question
about uninstalling and reinstalling less of the program.  I really don't need my printer to print backward and
that is all I see that it is doing that other printers don't.
Besides, Kudos goes to the person from HP who sent the email,  suggesting I used the HP Update software and drives recommended  for my computer system.  Computer, printer is working, back to normal and hasn't taken a dump since, I uploaded  software and drives for Windows XP Professional.

  • File Quarantine Message Removal Query

    Dear Forum,
I am currently using TextWrangler in a non-admin 10.6.4 account to look into the files of a WP installation, however every time I try to open a new .php, the file quarantine message pops up, however as I have already installed the blog and run it (via MAMP), I am assuming that any nefarious code (if there is any) would have been executed already.
I have found this, but I am wary of using it as I, to put it simply, have no idea if this would do more damage than good, so I was rather hopeful that some clever forum members might take a look and comment (especially regarding: do shell script “xattr -d com.apple.quarantine”):
(The source is cited in the script below)
    "Unquarantine" by Henrik Nyh <http://henrik.nyh.se/2007/10/lift-the-leopard-download-quarantine>
This Folder Action handler is triggered whenever items are added to the attached folder.
It gets rid of Leopard's annoying "this application was downloaded from the Internet" warnings by stripping the "quarantine" property.
on adding folder items to thisFolder after receiving addedItems
    repeat with anItem in addedItems
set anItem's contents to (quoted form of POSIX path of (anItem as alias))
    end repeat
set AppleScript's text item delimiters to " "
do shell script "xattr -d com.apple.quarantine " & (addedItems as text)
    end adding folder items to
    Cheers.

Looks fine AFAIK, but I'm not an AppleScript expert. The shell script part is fine.
Note that you should be careful with this. In Snow Leopard, quarantine protects you against several bits of malware. Although they're very rare and you should know better than to download any of them, you still don't want to remove that protection too quickly. Your purpose would be fine, but *DO NOT* apply such a folder action to a general downloads folder!
    For more information, see:

  • Do removing an extension fully removed it from the computer or does it leave leftover files?

So I installed a extension for Firefox.
    And then I removed it.
I want to know if removing a extension leave leftover files or things of that sort on your computer still or does removing a firefox extension fully remove everything associated with that extension?

It depends upon the extension. When an extension is uninstalled the folder containing that extension is removed. Some extensions will add files outside of this folder and they may not be removed. Additionally some extensions add details of their settings/poreferences to the Firefox preferences file and these will normally not be removed.

  • [SOLVED] how to prevent Xorg from clearing boot messages in scrollback

I have an updated Arch install with MATE and LightDM. LightDM autologin is enabled, so I normally boot directly to my desktop. I like seeing the messages that flash by during boot, so I deleted the word "quiet" from the linux line in my grub.cfg. Because I want all the messages to still be there after flashing by (in case I want to scroll through them later), I followed the advice here https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Di … t_messages and I also increased the scrollback buffer and enabled early KMS start.
Despite all the above, I can only scroll back to the beginning of the boot messages if I boot into non-graphical mode (e.g., by adding "systemd.unit=multi-user.target" to GRUB command line). If I allow a normal boot to my destkop and THEN go to non-graphical mode with "sudo systemctl isolate multi-user.target" to look at the boot messages, I notice that I cannot scroll back very far at all--most of the messages that flashed by during boot are gone. Therefore, it seems to me that either lightDM or Xorg is resetting the scrollback buffer and erasing all but the last few boot messages.
So, how do I tell LightDM or Xorg (whichever one is the culprit) *not* to clear the scrollback buffer, so that when I get out of graphical mode and into non-graphical mode the boot messages are all still there?

Since the answer to my original question seems to be "it is not possible," I will make this my last post to prevent the thread from going off-topic.
I came up with a simple workaround that (almost) recreates the old /var/boot/log:
    1) put "quiet" on grub2's kernel command line so that only* [FAIL] messages show up, so that I don't have to deal with the scrollback buffer
    2) create a startup script with the following contents (script or at least the setterm command must run as root because the setterm command needs to be able to read from /dev/vcs1):
    #!/bin/bash
    # this script will dump the text of tty1 to /var/log/boot, with same formatting as on the screen
    export TERM=xterm
    setterm -dump 1 -file /var/log/boot
    exit 0
    * Unfortunately, even in quiet mode grub2 starts printing all the boot status messages to screen once it encounters a [FAIL]. Therefore, if the [FAIL] occurs early enough in the boot process, the beginning of the messages will scroll off the screen and the workaround won't work. I spun off my two questions related to this nuisance into their own threads:
    a) How to make grub2 actually only print [FAIL] messages during boot? https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=184702
    b) How to print the contents of console's scrollback buffer to a file? https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php … 9#p1439359
I hope I can figure out how to do one of the above, because then the workaround would be perfect.
    Thanks for the help, guys!

  • [Solved] [Xorg+KMS+Intel] Can't see login console / boot messages!

    Hi,
My problem is that using an Intel video card (with KMS) after latest Xorg 1.8 update, I can't see boot messagges and the login console anymore.
I've just noticed that after last Xorg update I can't access anymore to runlevel 3 on boot.
I've got an Intel video card so KMS is enabled by default (and mandatory).
I always used SLiM as a display manager, configured through /etc/inittab to go to runlevel 5 on boot:
    # /etc/inittab
    # Runlevels:
    # 0 Halt
    # 1(S) Single-user
    # 2 Not used
    # 3 Multi-user
    # 4 Not used
    # 5 X11
    # 6 Reboot
    ## Only one of the following two lines can be uncommented!
    # Boot to console
    #id:3:initdefault:
    # Boot to X11
    id:5:initdefault:
    rc::sysinit:/etc/rc.sysinit
    rs:S1:wait:/etc/rc.single
    rm:2345:wait:/etc/rc.multi
    rh:06:wait:/etc/rc.shutdown
    su:S:wait:/sbin/sulogin -p
    # -8 options fixes umlauts problem on login
    c1:2345:respawn:/sbin/agetty -8 38400 tty1 linux
    c2:2345:respawn:/sbin/agetty -8 38400 tty2 linux
    c3:2345:respawn:/sbin/agetty -8 38400 tty3 linux
    c4:2345:respawn:/sbin/agetty -8 38400 tty4 linux
    c5:2345:respawn:/sbin/agetty -8 38400 tty5 linux
    c6:2345:respawn:/sbin/agetty -8 38400 tty6 linux
    # Hypervisor Virtual Console for Xen and KVM
    #h0:2345:respawn:/sbin/agetty -8 38400 hvc0 linux

    # Example lines for starting a login manager
    #x:5:respawn:/usr/bin/xdm -nodaemon
    #x:5:respawn:/usr/sbin/gdm -nodaemon
    #x:5:respawn:/usr/bin/kdm -nodaemon
    x:5:respawn:/usr/bin/slim >& /dev/null
To enable runlevel 3 at boot,  I commented the id:5:initdefault: and the x:5:respawn:/usr/bin/slim >& /dev/null lines and uncommented id:3:initdefault:.
Now, during boot, the last thing I see is Loading UDev modules..., then the screen becomes dark gray and I can't see any other boot messages (actually this appened also before, after xorg update).
The problem is that before slim started but now I can't see any login console.
I also figured out that typing my username, password and then startx, starts X normally, so the problem is just that I can't see the tty console anymore.
Once I am in X I can switch to ttys normally.
    What can I do?
I just wanted to get rid of slim and start X automatically after console login but I can't see the console login!
I hope to have been clear enough, thanks for your help!

Any hint is more than welcomed.
After a few reboots, I can confirm this workaround seems to work.
This is weird indeed as I don't have any SVIDEO-1 interface listed by xrandr -q, but still.

The only problem is that now boot lasts a lot of time  and, between UDev modules loading and disks checking, I have to wait for at least 30 seconds with a black screen and a central white dash flashing.
    Anyone experiencing the same thing?

  • Is there a software which can remove unused files leftover from removed applications?

Hi there guys, as the title says... Does anyone know of anything, or anyway that I can do this easily? I notice that I do have files left here and there from software which I have long since removed... Any easy way to remove these files..?

    Uninstalling Software: The Basics
Most OS X applications are completely self-contained "packages" that can be uninstalled by simply dragging the application to the Trash.  Applications may create preference files that are stored in the /Home/Library/Preferences/ folder.  Although they do nothing once you delete the associated application, they do take up some disk space.  If you want you can look for them in the above location and delete them, too.
Some applications may install an uninstaller program that can be used to remove the application.  In some cases the uninstaller may be part of the application's installer, and is invoked by clicking on a Customize button that will appear during the install process.
Some applications may install components in the /Home/Library/Applications Support/ folder.  You can also check there to see if the application has created a folder.  You can also delete the folder that's in the Applications Support folder.  Again, they don't do anything but take up disk space once the application is trashed.
Some applications may install a startupitem or a Log In item.  Startupitems are usually installed in the /Library/StartupItems/ folder and less often in the /Home/Library/StartupItems/ folder.  Log In Items are set in the Accounts preferences.  Open System Preferences, click on the Accounts icon, then click on the LogIn Items tab.  Locate the item in the list for the application you want to remove and click on the "-" button to delete it from the list.
Some software use startup daemons or agents that are a new feature of the OS.  Look for them in /Library/LaunchAgents/ and /Library/LaunchDaemons/ or in /Home/Library/LaunchAgents/.
If an application installs any other files the best way to track them down is to do a Finder search using the application name or the developer name as the search term.  Unfortunately Spotlight will not look in certain folders by default.  You can modify Spotlight's behavior or use a third-party search utility, EasyFind, instead.
Some applications install a receipt in the /Library/Receipts/ folder.  Usually with the same name as the program or the developer.  The item generally has a ".pkg" extension.  Be sure you also delete this item as some programs use it to determine if it's already installed.
There are many utilities that can uninstall applications.  Here is a selection:
        1. AppZapper
        2. AppDelete
        3. Automaton
        4. Hazel
        5. AppCleaner
        6. CleanApp
        7. iTrash
        8. Amnesia
        9. Uninstaller
      10. Spring Cleaning

  • [SOLVED] Unable to dual boot into Windows 8

I have an Acer Aspire S3 laptop which came with Windows 8 installed. After following the Beginner's Guide to install Arch alongside Windows, Linux works but Windows fails to boot. When I select Windows from the GRUB menu I get kicked out to rescue mode with a "file not found" error. This is a UEFI-GPT setup and in GRUB rescue I get an "unknown filesystem" error when I try to ls the ESP. In fact I get that error for everything except the two ext4 partitions I created during the Arch install.
I'll just briefly run down (what I think are) the relevant parts of the installation process, then post the output of Boot Info Script at the end.
    Partitions
I created three partitions during the installation:
    Swap (/dev/sda6)
    Root (/dev/sda7)
    Home (/dev/sda8)
The disk already had an EFI System Partition (/dev/sda2) so I used that instead of creating my own, mounting it to /boot as described in the beginner's guide (not /boot/efi as in the GRUB docs - not sure if that makes a difference).
    Boot Loader
I installed and configured GRUB exactly as described in the beginner's guide:
    # pacman -S grub efibootmgr os-prober
    # grub-install --target=x86_64-efi --efi-directory=/boot --bootloader-id=arch_grub --recheck
    # grub-mkconfig -o /boot/grub/grub.cfg
This appeared to work. Os-prober found my Windows OS ("Found Windows Boot Manager on /dev/sda2@/EFI/Microsoft/Boot/bootmgfw.efi") and added a corresponding menuentry to grub.cfg. On discovering that this didn't actually boot, I added a custom Windows entry per the GRUB dual-boot instructions. That didn't work either.
    Boot Info
Here is the output from boot info script which includes my grub config, partition info, fstab etc. One strange thing is that the script found every boot file on the ESP except the Windows Boot Manager, including leftover files from short-lived installations of Elementary OS and gummiboot. Maybe Windows is the "Unknown BootLoader" mentioned at the end.

I tried tackling this myself and ended up not being able to boot into Linux either. I had to go back to the USB install stick and redo a lot of the installation. I thought I'd better ask for some advice before diving in again. Let me know if you need any more info or log/config files.

As mentioned earlier, Fast Startup is off. I disabled it before installing Linux. dosfsck looks clean.
    $ sudo umount /dev/sda2

I'm not sure it does. This is the only mention of efi files I can find in the script.
    # Check FAT filesystems for EFI boot files.
for file in "${mountname}"/efi/*/*.efi ; do
    # Remove "${mountname}" part of the filename.
    file="${file#${mountname}}";
    if [ -f "${mountname}${file}" ] && [ -s "${mountname}${file}" ] && FileNotMounted "${mountname}${file}" "${mountname}" ; then
    BootFiles="${BootFiles} ${file}";

    done
Looking for "${mountname}"/efi/*/*.efi will only pick up files one level down from, say, /boot/EFI. Files in /boot/EFI/Microsoft/Boot are two levels down. I copied bootx64.efi into /boot/EFI/Microsoft and the script picked it up. This is with the latest version of bootinfoscript afaik.

Boot messages suddenly stopped showing up on screen during boot  -  these are the messages preceeded with the green [OK] and red [FAILED].
The equivalent shutdown messages still show on screen when shutting down. No change in mkinitcpio.conf or syslinux.cfg (syslinux bootloader).  ....and there is no "splash" or "quiet" parameter being passed to kernel.
Missing messages most likely started after a system upgrade but not sure which package or when.
During boot I get the "Welcome to Archlinux" and some fsck messages, then the prompt for userid.
No problems with system after boot.....just not getting those system boot messages.  Hate when stuff changes without knowing why.
I know about getting boot messages via journalctl, so please do not recommend.

    Hello,
Who can help me with this problem. Since a day or two i'm getting a black screen with the following message
    File: \Boot\BCD
    status: 0xc0000098
Info: The windows boot configuration data file does not contaitn a valid OS entry.
have anyone a idea to solve this problem
    i don't have a windows installation disc
    Thank you in advance
    Greet Berry

Plenty of articles on how to fix it. Just Google "fix error 0xc0000098" - there's also a youtube video. If you are in luck then:
Check if you are able to get the recovery options by pressing the key F8 on your computer.
    a. Restart your computer if it is powered on.
    b. Tap the F8 key after your computer initially powers on.
    c. Once you see the Advanced Boot Options menu you can stop tapping.
From the Advanced Boot options, check if you can get the System Recovery or repair option. This would take you to Windows recovery options. If you can get to the recovery options, you can rebuild BDC. Follow the below article:

  • Windows 7 not booting. Says File:\Boot\BCD error

HI, I have purchased a HP Pavilion DMZ1 XL303AV laptop. I had got it serviced from a HP service centre as it had suffered water spillage. The service centre replaced the entire motherboard. Now, the laptop suddenly stopped working. It gives an error message: File : \Boot\BCD; Status 0xc00000e9 ; Info: AN unexpected I/O error has occured. It says if you receive this error, please contact hardware manufacturer.
I donot have a  Recovery CD for this model. HP did not provide. I donot remember creating a recovery USB drive for this (This model has no CD/DVD drive).
The machine is not working . Please help

Hi SyedAR, I am sorry to hear that you are getting this error on your computer. I would strongly suggest that you contact HP Total care at 1-800-474-6836 or at this link if the number is outside your calling area.  http://www8.hp.com/us/en/contact-hp/ww-contact-us.html      From what I can see from this error, you are going to need the recovery disks for the Windows operating system and you can get them from HP Total care.  They will also be able to walk your through repairing your computer once you have the disks.
    Thank you for your time.
