[Solved] Set Chromium default browser
Here https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Ch … lt_browser it says to put
if [ -n "$DISPLAY" ]; then
BROWSER=chromium
fi
in ~/.profile
I have put it but chromium is still not the default browser. Should I put something more than this in empty .profile I just created?
Thank you

As far as I can see in the link you have posted there are additional options/procedures in order to make sure Chromium is the default browser. Did you try them?

I'm trying to set the default browser as `chromium`.
In `.xinitrc` I have:
~~~
# Sets browser.
if [ -n "$DISPLAY" ]; then
export BROWSER=chromium
fi
~~~
Anyway, `skype` open any link in `opera`.As always find it on the wiki: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/De … plications
That said i prefer setting the default applications with 'mimi' , because it is simpler.

Hi,
I am trying to disable updates, set as default browser option and import settings from other browers permanently for many users for firefox 31.0.
can you please help me with that. I know settings are going to prefs.js file in user profile. How can make this permanent for many users.Hi gaurav3012,
Permanent change would be locking preferences: [http://kb.mozillazine.org/Locking_preferences]
However importing many users profiles to different computers may require a new profile for each user.
Currently there is an option to import bookmarks from other browsers, but not preferences.
Update preferences can be read about here: [[Configuration Options for Updates]]
Firefox ESR is also another version of Firefox that is meant for Enterprise environments [https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/organizations/] that mostly has their support on their mailing list. -
How I can set my default browser mozilla firefox from the command line in Windows 7?
I need to set my default browser mozilla firefox from the command line, ie without using the GUI.
'''-setDefaultBrowser''' is the correct command - you need the two capital letters.
Why Firefox 17.0.1? You would be missing a number of important security updates. Firefox 17.0.'''9''' is the current ESR release version. -
Links in emails continue to open in safari even though firefox is set to default browser
When clicking on a link contained in an email it activates safari for the search rather Firefox my default browser. I have tried removing safari, but when I do that no connection happens at all.
Any help?Safari is not going to open Firefox since they are both browsers. When you set a default browser, it means that if you click a link in an email, say, the browser that the link will open with is Firefox. If you want to launch a browsing session on your own, you select the browser you want to use.
Cheers,

I have had a problem previously accessing the net w/ firefox. After checking firefox info site, I set Firefox as the default browser and that corrected the problem. It has now happened again w/ the settings as described. No problems (other than normal) w/ Internet Esplorer and no problems w/ Thunderbird. Suggestions?
You may also need to reset some prefs. You have a lot of prefs in your More system details list that were changed from the default.<br />
One of them being the pref to override the user agent to Firefox 3.6.3
general.useragent.override Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 6.1; en-US; rv:1.9.2.3) Gecko/20100401 Firefox/3.6.3
If you haven't set network.http prefs yourself to those values for specific reasons then you should reset them (not all servers support pipelining). dom.max_chrome_script_run_time 0 and dom.storage.enabled false should also only be done in case of problems. dom.storage is a replacement for cookies and dom.max_chrome_script_run_time set to 0 may cause the browser to hang in case of script errors. -
I am deploying an application using firefox. I am using the mozilla.cfg file to lockdown firefox and I don't want firefox to be the default browser.
Try the option to "Force Firefox to make itself the default" as shown in this article - http://kb.mozillazine.org/Default_browser
Another possibility is your email application may be hard-coded to use IE. -
How do I set my default browser to Firefox?
When a URL is in an email message and I click on it, it goes to Safari. I want it to go to Firefox. I looked through all the preferences settings and could not find an answer to this. Thank you.
This is not set in Thunderbird. Thunderbird uses your default operating system browser.
Go into Safari and tell it that it is not the default and then go into Firefox and set it as the default. -
[SOLVED]Setting the default monitor in Gnome3
I have an external monitor connected to my laptop and I want it to be the default screen (to contain the panel, notifications etc.). I've solved this by adding the command:
xrandr --output VGA-0 --primary
to the gnome startup applications. This works but I'm curious is there some other, more elegant way of solving this, maybe through X server configuration or something??
Thanks in advance.
Last edited by Caspian (2011-05-09 18:46:25)in the gnome display settings, you can drag the panel to the monitor of your liking, that setting will stick.

I want to set my default browser to bing not google
When I open firefox from my shortcut on windows I want bing to open as my homepage instead of google. I just got a new computer but my old computer was able to open with bing so I know it can be done, I just don't know how. Please help. Thanks
First copy the bing address (http://www.bing.com/) to your clipboard. Then click Tools, then Options, then make sure the General tab is selected. Next, paste the bing url in to the Home Page: box. If "Show my home page" option is not already selected in the "When Firefox starts" box, do so using the down arrow. Click OK.

[Solved]Unable to set default browser
Using XFCE I can set the default browser from settings/Preferred Applications to either google chrome or firefox both of which are installed. I set chrome as preferred and can get online no problem. The setting will stay for sometimes days or maybe a few minutes before the system 'forgets' what preference has been set and reverts to no preference set.
Using thunderbird to open links in emails always opens Firefox despite the default browser being set to chrome. In fact firefox always stays set as default browser under preferences/general and I can have firefox and chrome open at the same time with both claiming they are the default browser. If I set the system preference to firefox then open chrome it detects it is not the default browser and allws me to set it as default, this always seems to set the system preferences to not set so it removes firefox but not not set chrome, if I then open firefox it does not give the message about not being the default but checking in preferences/general it is already set as default.
I seem to be going around in circles for the last few weeks, can someone point me in the right direction?
Last edited by weedfreak (2012-09-23 09:43:11)Well I had also tried using XFCE Preferred application to set it and that also did not work, there was also an anomaly with the menu entry for Web Browser, it always claimed there was no preference set and I needed to select the session browser from the list.
The link provided was not really a lot of help directly, but it did point out that xdg-open is broken and gave me some directions to search in, eventually I found the ~/.local/applications/mimeapp.list contained a lot of references to firefox that stayed in place even if preferences were changed, they were listed before the chrome entries. I deleted every line with firefox in then when I tried a link from Thunderbird I was asked to choose a browser and the change stuck, the web browser menu link also works correctly.
Not sure if this is really solved or if it is a workaround but I'll mark it solved. -
[SOLVED] LXDE / Evolution: setting default browser?
Hello,
Recently I switched to LXDE coming from Gnome, and clicking an URL in an email doesn't open my browser anymore.
I searched gconf-editor to set my default browser app, and found some references to epiphany (that I changed to firefox), but that doesn't seem to have fixed it.
Anyone?

I think evolution is too much integrated into gnome to be able to do such a setting in the program itself, maybe it looks into Gnome's defaults, which you cannot set without the configuration tools of gnome.
My recommendations:
Use another mail programm, i.e. claws-mail, which I like pretty much.
Install Gnome (minimal installation), do the settings and uninstall it afterwards or let it on the machine, if it doesn't disturb you.
Yes, it looks like I should switch to another emailprogram, but at the moment I'm tied with hands and feet to evolution, since I'm using webcalendars and LDAP-contacts. Thunderbird + lightning is coming along nicely, but it cannot write to LDAP and claws-mail has calendar-support, but it is slow and the GUI to it is very arcane.
The gnome-settings are stored IIRC in gconf, and I cannot find the right entries
Zl.
/EDIT: thought about it and did a new search in gconf-editor and found out that I still had some references to a test-setup for firefox 3.0beta. This thread can be closed as it is solved. THX for your answers!

Firefox is set as the default browser, but if I click a link in MS Word, the link is opened with MS Internet explorer. Why?
What version of Windows and Office is it? I had this issue with an older version of office and Windows XP. Basically, MS are using their browser (IE) because it's their software (MS Office). If you go to options in MS word though, you should be able to find an option to set the default browser to open links.
