[SOLVED] Setting up the Compose Key in Fluxbox

I have been going 'round and 'round with this, so I am deferring to those more knowledgeable than I. I have successfully set up the Compose key in Gnome, but I have been trying to migrate to Fluxbox. To my surprise, I can not seem to get the Compose key to work in Fluxbox, while the AltGR key seems to be working fine (the exact opposite of my Gnome setup: Compose works, AltGr doesn't). Compose is much more intuitive, therefore I would prefer to use it. The following is the relevant section of  /etc/X11/XF86Config
Section "InputDevice"
# generated from default
Identifier "Keyboard0"
Driver "keyboard"
Option "XkbModel" "pc104"
Option "XkbRules" "xfree86"
Option "XkbOptions" "compose:lwin,grp:switch"
Option "XkbOptions" "grp:menu_toggle"
Option "XkbLayout" "us,ru"
Option "XkbVariant" ",phonetic"
Option "caps:shiftlock,shift:breaks_caps"
EndSection
The keyboard that I am using is a Creative Prodikeys PC-MIDI, however my Saitek Eclipse II shows the same behavior.
On my netbook (AAOne), which I set up Fluxbox from the beginning, the compose key works perfectly. The Only difference that I can easily identify is that my netbook is using the file, '/etc/X11/xorg.conf' rather than '/etc/X11/XF86Config'. I have tried to retrace the steps that I used in setting up my netbook, but I am simply stumped.
Thank you.

So, the way I fixed this was by generating a new xorg.conf file using hwd -x. I then replaced the /etc/X11/XF86Config with the new /etc/X11/xorg.conf file and restarted X (while saving a copy of the old XF86Config file). This didn't work completely because the display was bad, however the compose key worked, so I opened up two terminals and copied all of the relevant information from the new xorg.file to the XF86Config file (commenting out redundant or conflicting lines from the original XF86 in case there were any problems). I then put the XF86Connfig back in /etc/X11/ and it works perfectly.
Thanks me... I'm welcome.

  • Wish you could tap the Shift key to set next key press in caps on iMac

I really wish in Mac OS that you could 'tap' the Shift key to set up the next key press in capitals.  In Lion, on my iMac desktop, the present arrangement requires you to hold down the Shift key while hitting the letter you want to capitalise, as has been the case since time began.  On my lovely iPad2, you just tap the shift key once and the next keypress is in caps - SIMPLE and efficient.  I have been yearning for this simple change to the OS since way before the iPad came along, but now you can use it in iOS5 and NOT in Lion, it's really frustrating.  i find i am now failing time after time to select caps in Lion...

  • Compose key not working in StarOffice

    Hallo,
Since I make my text in various european languages, I am very much hooked on using the Compose key.
The standard Compose key works in Solaris, but not in StarOffice. What do I have to do to make this work?
    Thanks, Bram
P.S. I know I can use diacritical characters with "Insert => Special Character", but working with my Compose key is so much faster.....

I want to set easy to use umlaut characters for when I'm writing in German. I would also like all the Greek letters and math symbols for when I'm writing physics notes.

  • How do I tell if the option key is down?

I want to detect whether the option key is being held down while the gui is setting up (the option key, only appearing on macs, is roughly equivalent to the 'alt' key).
I am not having any particular events fired at this time, that I know of. How can I detect this? I searched the API and other documentation -- there was a lot of stuff on keys becoming pressed or released (which can be represented by a java.swing.KeyStroke), but I couldn't find anything to just ask whether a given key was down at a given moment. You see, the option key could very well have been held before java even started, let alone before I am ready to ask the question...

    Found it, I think

  • No key event when compose keys are pressed

I am supporting a legacy application for Sabre which maps some of the keys differently. For example, on a French keyboard the Compose key which is used to put a ^ on top of the vowel characters is to be remapped to produce a special character called a "Change Character" that has a special use for reservation agents that use Sabre
The problem is, the first time you press the ^ compose key there is no key event apparently because the VM figures it doesn't yet know what key to report, it is expecting you to press a character such as 'o' and then you get an 'o' with a '^' on top of it.
If you press the ^ compose key a second time, you get the following key events:
    keyPressed
    keyTyped
    keyTyped
    keyReleased
On the screen you will see two ^ characters appear. Currently I remap the ^ character to the "Change Character", and I suppress the second keyTyped event so that I only get one character. The problem is that the user ends up having to press the key twice to get one "Change Character."
I have no fix for this problem because there is no key event produced when they press the ^ compose key the first time.
By the way, this behavior appears to have been introduced with jdk 1.3. The older jdk did produce a key event the first time you pressed the compose key. I would expect that this behavior was considered to be a bug and was fixed in jdk 1.3.
Is there some other way to detect when the user presses a compose key? If not, is it possible for future jdk releases to report a keyPressed event when a compose key is pressed? This event would not cause a character to appear on the screen, but would allow programs to detect when the compose key is pressed.
There is already a key on the French keyboard that behaves this way. It is the key to the left of the '1' key and it has the pipe symbol on it. If you press Shift plus this pipe key, no character is produces but a keyPressed event with a keycode of 222 is produced. I merely point this out to show that there is a way to report key events whithout producing output on the screen.
    Thanks, Brian Bruderer

I don't know if this actually helps, but it seems that you can bind an Action to a dead key like the circumflex of the French keyboard
    Keymap keymap = textPane.addKeymap("MyEmacsBindings", textPane.getKeymap());
    Action action = getActionByName(DefaultEditorKit.beginAction );
    KeyStroke key = KeyStroke.getKeyStroke(KeyEvent.VK_DEAD_CIRCUMFLEX);
keymap.addActionForKeyStroke(key, action);I saw this on a Swing tutorial and modified it slightly. Have a look at it :

  • Apple wireless keyboard won't let me delete without using the fn key.

My apple wireless keyboard won't let me delete in indesign without using the fn key. Is there a key command that I accidentally hit that causes that or something? I've never had this happen before. It isn't happening in any other program, just indesign cs4. Has anyone had this happen and how do I fix it?

I figured it out. My keyboard shortcut set in indesign was corrupt. I went back to the default set and created a new set and the delete key started working again.

  • Menu Bar - Sound Volume icon does not move with the press of the F key

So I normally press the F keys to control the Sound Volume, right, just like everyone else does -
but the Sound Volume icon in the Menu Bar at the top right does not respond to the F key at all!
Isn't it supposed to react simultaneous with the press of the F key?
I have to actually use my mouse click to make that volume go up and down.
The actual volume does work with the F key, it goes up and down.
But to make the 2 work in sync, I have to point the mouse to the one at the Menu Bar, fiddle with it, and then I can use the F key and both work together at the same time.
If I haven't touched the Menu Bar one for a while and I only use the F key, the Menu Bar one doesn't move at all.
    It's weird. Any ideas?

I see what Al is seeing. Normally I just use one method or the other. The Volume Adjustment keys provide visual feedback, so it's unnecessary to check the menu extra, i.e. the Volume menu bar icon, to see the same feedback.
The slight delay in the reaction of the Volume menu extra, when open and while adjusting the volume with the Volume keys is normal.
They're independent methods for adjusting the Volume setting. The Volume menu extra takes a moment to refresh when the slider is displayed and you're changing the setting via the Volume keys.
    Good luck!

  • I need the short key to go to the beginning of end timeline.

In the help (shortkey) i must use the home key to go to the beginnig of timeline but there is no home key on my macbpro...
What is the key (or shortkey) for this action and for the end of the timeline?
    Thanks!

You need to go to system Prefrences keyboard and see what you have set to show the desktop.  It shouldn't be set to the fn key. Nothing should be set to just the fn key by itself.

  • Xmonad, lock the mod key to simulate modal behavior.

Hi,  I just had an idea that I would like to try out, however I can't figure out a good way to go about implementing it.
I'm currently using xmonad as my wm, and I have myModMask set to the Super_L key.  what I would like to do is have this key lock in a similar fashion to the caps-lock key so that I can achieve a vim like modal behavior for my desktop environment.  basically I spend a lot of time moving windows around etc. and I'm tired of having my pinky tied up during these moves, so I thought I'd try this out.
xmodmap doesn't seem to allow me to do what I need, so I'm thinking I might be able to do something with my xmonad.hs... any ideas?

    Hi!
    I haven't had the patience to start learning haskell... in the mean time I hacked this together;
    http://pastebin.com/3BDTier2
There's a "recursive submap" called myGeneralSubMap. It works for the basic stuff (moving windows around and stuff), but spawning stuff is broken/ugly; it'll spawn the command only once you *leave* the recursive submap.
Does anyone have an idea on how to fix that?
What bothers me with this is that the list of my keybindings is doubled; once for the normal keys, and once for the submap. What would be the elegant haskell way of using one list for both instances?

  • Compose Key in gnome-terminal

    Hallo All
We currently have a bit a strange behavior of the compose key in gnome-terminal (jds). If I want to create a-umlaut and press "compose->drouble brackets-> a I get the following string: " . But this happens only on gnome-terminal and some gnome-apps. If I start xterm, it works as expected (key sequence generates the expected ). Can somebody give me a hint, how the compose key is handled on Solaris/X11, and how to configure it correctly under X (gnome) and - later also - KDE?
    Many thanks

it's working well with mono fonts, but for reading literary texts I'd prefer proportional fonts. KDE4 konsole doesn't even allow proportional fonts in the selection of available fonts, while with gnome-terminal the proportional fonts are badly displayed. Why not displaying proportional fonts as they should, even if it could break some console programs (such as nethack)?

This problem has also been plaguing me today. Here are my specifics and how I solved it (Expanding on what Quentin Holmes mentioned)
CONFIRMED WORK AROUND! The .m4v file gets created while encoding, but Adobe Media Encoder does not re-pack it back into the .mp4 unless you select the "Export Audio" in Adobe Premier export prior to queuing. If you don't want audio, mute the individual tracks and still export audio.
    My details:
Just bought a GH4, shooting 4k 25fps MOV, trying to simply trim a few clips and export them as H.264 .mp4 with no audio. (By the way it would be nice if we could export 4k .MOV files from the camera back into .MOV once finished editing, but in premier that frame resolution is not supported)
Specs: Mac Mini, Quad Core i7, 16GB Ram, OSX 10.9.4, Adobe Premier Pro CS6 6.0.5, Adobe Media Encoder 6.0.2.81
Hope that helps anyone with the same prob

  • [SOLVED] Compose key doesn't work

Hey, I just switched from gentoo to arch, and I'm liking it (all except for the beginner's flubs).  For some reason, though, I can't get my right alt key to work as the Compose, or Multi key.  I have it set in my xorg.conf and in kde's control panel (I use kde), but while in KDE it doesn't seem to do anything.  Xev reports that it's Multi_key, as does xbindkeys -k.  Can someone help me figure this out?
    Thanks,

    Hello
Do you have messages related to keyboard in the /var/log/Xorg.0.log file ?
Do you have the xorg-xkb-utils package installed ? It provides the xkbcomp binary used by xorg to set the AltGr key.

  • [SOLVED] Set keyboard property through the console

    Hi,
in the GNOME Keyboard properties, there is the option "Key presses repeat when key is held down" option. How can I set this option without GNOME, Any Xorg pros here that can help me? Maybe with setxkbmap? But I don't see what option I must use there. Or do I need a xorg.conf setting? I've read all the man pages.
Why do I need this? I have a game running on a seperate XServer in wine that only works properly when that setting is disabled.
    Thanks
/Edit: Solved! xset r on/off does the trick.

    Hello Rumenigue,
It looks to me like you are using a console cable.  The reason you usually see them the other way around is because with a console cable the RJ-45 end goes into the device (an ethernet jack labeled console) whereas on this switch the console port is serial itself.
Usually the serial end of the cable you have plugs into a USB to serial adapter (because most computers today don't have serial ports anymore) and that USB connection goes into your PC, creating the virtual COM port you need in HyperTerminal.
So if you get a USB to Serial adapter you could plug that from USB to the console port, or if you computer has a serial port of its own just connect a serial cable directly from the PC to the switch, then use HyperTerminal with the settings recommended above by Tom.
    Hope I have helped,

  • Can't set the correct key when converting imported audio to GB loops

    Hi,
I feel I am really out of options for this one. I am trying to convert a couple of mp3 files to useful GarageBand loops. This is what I tried first:
    1) drag the mp3 file on the timeline.
    2) using a steady 4-beat, match the BPM settings to that it fits the tempo of the imported file
    3) check the key of the imported file with a software instrument, and switch the project's key accordingly
    4) Edit -> Add to Loop Library
Using this method, the produced loops show up in the Loops Browser correctly, but they play back in the wrong key. Example: I created a loop from a mp3 file that was originally played in A. I tagged it as being in the "A" key by creating a loop from it, with the project key set to "A".
When it then shows up in the Loop Browser, and I would select this loop with my Garageband project (still) set to "A" - I would expect to hear the loop being played in its original key.
It doesn't. It plays about four or five semitones too high (the difference between A and C, or C and E)
I haven't been able yet to figure out why this is so, or if there is any pattern in how much the key is off.
Then I searched far & wide, and found the Apple Loop Utility and a couple of articles on bulletsandbones.com. I also checked the midi import settings, though I doubt whether they have any influence here. They were set at 44.1 KHz.
This is what I tried then:
    1) use bulletsandbones.com's never-fail conversion to AIF format (44.1 KHz sample rate, 16 bit)
    2) use the Apple Loop Utility to "tag" the AIF file, setting it so that it shows up in the right category of the loop browser, etc.
    3) also, use this utility to tag it with the key that the loop is played in
    4) copy the AIF file into the Loop Library directory
    5) start Garageband, and refresh / re-index the Loop Library so that the new loop is added and properly indexed
This made no difference. Or maybe it did, but the loops thus produced STILL do not play back in the key that I tagged them in (if I set the project accordingly, of course). It's completely mystifying.
I can omit a key indicator in the Apple Loop Utility, and only then does the loop play back as it should. But then it does not change with the project's key settings anymore.
Even more strange: even a loop that I tagged (in the "A" key) and saved with the Apple Loop Utility, plays back too high in that same Apple Loop Utility when I re-open it. It does play back correctly in Finder's Fast Preview.
I could not find any mention of this problem elsewhere. Does anyone have a suggestion what might cause this?

I think this is the culprit:
    3) check the key of the imported file with a software instrument, and switch the project's key accordingly
If the "follow tempo & pitch" box is checked, this might change the sample's pitch and throw GB off.
Try to determine the sample's key before you import it, set the GB project's key accordingly, and then import the sample. That should assign it the correct key!
