[SOLVED] SSD hard drive ata errors, system unresponsive

Hello,
I have arch installed for about 2 weeks. Since 2 or 3 days, I'm getting ata errors in dmesg.
When this happen, The HD LED is light up steady and the system is unresponsive. I have to reset the PC. It was stable before. I remember when doing a pacman -Syu, there was a kernel upgrade a couple of days ago. I'm wondering if it could be realted.
The SSD is a OCZ Vortex2, 100GB.
Any clue?
Here is the dmesg log:

  • [SOLVED] Upgrade hard drive: Grub error 22: Partition not found

I'm trying to move to a different hard drive.  I booted a live cd, created the partitions, formatted, and used "cp -a" to copy all the files over.  I also updated the fstab on the new drive, and now I would expect everything to work.  However, I can't get past grub.
When I boot up, I get "grub error 22: partition not found".
Here is my setup ("Arch Linux - SSD" is the entry not working):

Another note, is that grub-install takes a very long time to run after I update the menu.lst (5+ minutes), but the update does work without errors, and the new items do appear.
Any help would be appreciated, I'm wondering if I've just been looking at it too long...

I solved this by using the uuid instead of the root:
    # (0) Arch Linux
    title Arch Linux - SSD
    uuid 128a4425-c9ae-433f-b604-5488d55a14b3
    kernel /boot/vmlinuz26 root=/dev/sdb3 ro vga=775
    initrd /boot/kernel26.img
Also, I got "grub-install" to run much faster by removing the fd0 from the device map.

I've read that you have do it through System Recovery

The OP's machine may need to be reinstalled from discs rather than recovery, but without knowing the age of the Mac that is a guess.

Reinstalling Lion/Mountain Lion Without Erasing the Drive
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the main menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion: Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.

  • IMac (Late 2006) upgrade to a SSD hard drive

Im looking to upgrade my iMac 17" 2.0Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo (Late 2006) to a SSD hard drive. How much speed can it handle, the available SSD hard drives have SATA speeds of 1.5Gb/s, 3Gb/s and 6Gb/s. I would like to get the 6Gb/s one but only if it can accept that speed.

Don't know if you'll find a 3.5" SSD The adapter plate isn't a problem and the chassis connector will fit right on. Are you attempting to do this yourself? There are several how tovideos on the net keep in mind when you start to lift out the monitor the wiring is very short so don't pull up too quickly or you'll unplug 2 connectors that aren't marked as to which is which. Good luck

  • After updating ram and to SSD hard drive bluetooth no longer works

Updated my two sets of hynix 2GB ram to two sets of Crucial 4GB ram (8GB total), and then also installed a Samsung 1TB SSD hard drive.
Now my Bluetooth does not recognize any devices at all.
I'm using a Mid-2010 Macbook Pro 17" 2.53 ghtz on the most recent version of Mavericks.
(In order to update to the SSD drive, I inserted the blank drive, formatted it using my install discs, then did an internet OS install of Mavericks, and used Migration Assistant to import all my old data. Everything else is working perfectly fine.)

I do not know what happened, but try resetting the SMC (might help, cannot hurt).

  • How do I place my files on a separate hard drive from the system drive with OS X?

I have a mac pro and want to place my files on a seperate hard drive to the system. Can anybody please ad vise me what I have to do to achieve this. My OS X is Lion 10.7.5

Drag and drop will normally work if the separate hard drive is formatted right:
    https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-3003
Mind you, an external hard drive is the ideal way of backing up data.   Software such as Carbon Copy Cloner or Time Machine can be used for backing up, and is much faster than using the Finder for drag and drop, and will ensure the entire system gets backed up.
Time Machine offers whole unbootable system backup with archiving.  Each archive has a temporary existence as long as the backups are automatic.  When you make them manual, you can copy them off to a non-time machine source to ensure they exist longer.  The larger your destination drive, the longer the archives last.
Carbon Copy Cloner is used most often for clones, and it maintains an exact replica of the original, deleting anything the original had deleted on the copy that it makes, and its backups are bootable when they are successful.  It offers archiving options, but they aren't as transparent as Time Machine.
Firewire 800 is faster than USB 2.   PCI eSATA and Thunderbolt cards are faster.  The ability to boot the PCI based cards varies by card.  But the SATA drives can be inserted internally if you want them to be boot.  Some SATA drives need a jumper to be able to be read by your 1.1's slower internal SATA bus speed.  Check with the hard drive vendor.  USB 3 cards exist as well, though I've heard USB 3 has difficulty with WiFi interferance.

  • New 17 in MBP--cannot install OS X with SSD Hard drive

    Hi
I just bought the latest MBP from Apple's website last week. I previously had the previous generation (17in MBP with i7) I am using this SSD hard drive
    http://www.crucial.com/store/partspecs.aspx?IMODULE=CTFDDAC256MAG-1G1
My problem is OS X will not install on this drive ONLY on this new MBP. It fails about 1/2 through. I have tested the drive with disk utility and it comes back fine. I ran diagnostics on a Windows box and it came back fine. I have also placed this hard drive in the previous MBP and a 13 in MBP (core 2 duo) and it installed very fast and fine. THe drive has the latest firmware from Crucial.
When I go to install, it is very slow compared to the original 750GB 5400rpm drive. It takes about an hour before it crashes. I have a call in with an Apple senior level tech, but he is off until Monday and I really need to get this fixed. I am 200 miles away from an Apple store and while I am willing to drive it, they said over the phone they can not guarentee a fix.
I swapped out RAM, reset the PRAM, cried, prayed, and begged. What's going on? Is this a design flaw?? How can I get this to go through?
I would really appreciate someones help. Thanks guys!

Do I understand correctly that you're replacing the new machine's original hard drive with this SSD? If so, here's a different approach to installing the OS on it:
Put the SSD into an external enclosure and the original drive back into the MBP. Connect the external to the MBP, boot the MBP from the internal HD, format the SSD with Disk Utility, and clone the original hard drive onto the SSD after reformatting the SSD with Disk Utility. You can do the cloning with Disk Utility, but I prefer Carbon Copy Cloner or SuperDuper because they're more informative about what's happening during the process. After the clone is complete, install the SSD into the MBP and test.
