[SOLVED] Steam games crash at start
I have problem with running games with wine for a while now and I can't figure out what's the problem. I have all my games on steam except 1 which is the world of tanks. When I start a game it crashes almost instantly. I tried the following games so far: team fortress 2, counter-strike source, super meat boy, cogs, audiosurf, payday the heist and maybe some more I don't remember now. And the interesting part is that I have left 4 dead 2 and it's works perfectly also world of tanks works too. I didn't tested all my games, so I don't know if there's any other which works.

Yeah, thanks, but I already know that. The problem is everything was ok until this came up.

Hey everyone,
So I just put together a system with an AMD FX 8320 Black Edition, MSI 970A-G46 mobo, MSI Radeon 7870 2GB DDR5/OC, 16GB corsair vengeance DDR3 (running at 1600MHz), Win8 64-bit, Ultra 750W modular PSU, and I seem to be having problems with a steam game crashing on startup. I know there have historically been problems with Steam applications and AMD FX cpus but I had heard they were long since fixed through BIOS updates. I have updated to the latest BIOS (2.3) listed on the MSI website, but I am still having the same issue. Other games (skyrim, doom3 etc.) open just fine through steam, it is only CS:GO that I have a problem with. When I try to run the game I get this:

So, I updated my KDE (qt to be exact), a few days ago, (I tend to update every day, in the evening, and from that update I am experiencing an annoying problem, where after KDE starts, I get the following error:

Not really, we just need to follow upstream development and hope that someone will fix this, because it seems that this is a problem at the upstream level.
Downgrade did not helped me, but you may try it.

Games crashes with Virtu MVP software on Z77A-GD65-Gaming
Hi,
I have set-up Virtu MVP with d-mode in the bios, installed Nvidia and Intel HD drivers but are having problems with games crashes.
With version 2.1.223 my issues are:
- All Call of Duty games crash on start with VV & HF enabled
With version 2.1.224 my issues are:
- Graphics corruption / artefacts with Crysis.exe
- Virtu MVP control panel does not allow editing and removing of games, also 'H' column is missing with game selection
- All Call of Duty games crash on start with VV & HF enabled
I am using Windows 8 Pro, Core i7 3770K with MSI NGTX 670 PE/OC
Lucid web site says that I have to contact mainboatd manufacturing (i.e. MSI) for support - is that correct?
ThanksLucid MVP has proved to be a disaster. With some games it seems to work and other not without considerable effort. My advise would be to disable the feature. If you wish to use gpu virtualization, you can try assigning Phys x to the cpu via the NVidia control panel.

[SOLVED] Download speed is slow while playing certain Steam games
This is a weird one: When playing Steam games my download speed (everywhere) drops to a fraction of what it should be (roughly 1/10th). My upload speed is unaffected.
I don't know how long this has been the case but I think it's fairly recent since when playing games I often tab out and do stuff on the net. I would've noticed.
This doesn't happen with Portal 2, Civ V, Guacamelee or Xcom but does happen with Rochard, Steamworks Dig, Gateways (2d puzzle platformer) and Awesomenauts. I was looking for a pattern but I fail to see one.
To be clear about the problem: If I start one of those games and tab out my download speed is 1/10th what it should be. If I exit the game my download speed returns to normal instantly.
I've checked for obvious stuff like Steam downloading in the background (it's not and nor is anything else - no unusual network activity at all). I've checked for mere coincidence - signal dropping/interference and so on and that seems not to be it either. It's also far too consistent and, as I say, upload is unaffected for some reason.
I don't even know what info to give with this one or how to begin tracking it down so any advice will be received gratefully.
I'm running Arch 64bit, all up to date.
05:03.0 Network controller: Ralink corp. RT2561/RT61 rev B 802.11g
Which I believe is using the rt61pci module.
Last edited by dgesh (2014-06-28 06:00:47)Ok, well, I *think* I've sort of solved it:
I went through various wifi channels and found that the degree to which my download speed was reduced varied depending on the wifi channel I was on. So I left a game running and watched the download speed and the speed of my CPU and GPU as they clocked up/down and it seems that one of them is managing to interfere with the wifi signal. Or at least that's my best guess. High wifi channel numbers seem to be affected least (significantly so) so ... yeah.
I don't know if this makes sense technically (and no idea how I've never encountered it before) but... that's my guess. -
[Solved] Steam Can't Download Games
Numerous people have been having this problem, where Steam will not download games correctly. It will start the download, then it slows to a crawl until it completely stops. I have found two reasons so far as to why this could be happening. One is that Steam is writing to the disk to aggressively, and it stresses out fsync, therefore stopping the download. Another one is that it asks why too many calls to DNS (10 a second), and this will cause it to just stop the download.
I was wondering if any of you know about this, and maybe have some sort of way to fix this. The fsync theory has a workaround that involves putting "barrier=0" in your fstab options for your drive. I did this, with no success. It still refuses to download.
The DNS theory has a workaround which includes using a package called "dnsmasq" to cache the DNS calls, so it doesn't stop the download. I tried dnsmasq with no success. When I set it up, it didn't download at all. My internet worked, but I couldn't download any Steam games. So that didn't work either. I may have set it up wrong, but I followed the dnsmasq Arch wiki page, so I can't imagine that I did.
Any suggestions? Valve has known about this for over a year and haven't done anything about it, so this is the last place I can think of to ask for help. I tried the Valve github, Steam forums, all to no avail.

If this were the problem, wouldn't I be unable to download games on Windows as well?
brebs wrote:Have you played with /etc/sysctl.conf? Some of the settings can be bad, e.g. setting net.ipv4.tcp_ecn=1 can prevent communication with old hardware, if it freaks out from the ECN flag.
I did pull my 99-sysctl.conf file out of the sysctl.d folder, but it still wouldn't download games. However, I never changed the "net.ipv4.tcp_ecn=" setting from its default, so maybe I will disable ECN and see if that fixes it. I can't see ECN being enabled by default, but its worth a try. I will try anything at this point.
DarkCerberus wrote:Have you changed steam's mirror server location to one let say London if you're in England - steam usually changes the default server location in the steam preferences when it hasn't been properly configured - try browsing the settings on steam itself and check the Downloads section and the Download Region.
I have done this too. I have tried Sweden, Norway, Egypt, UK servers, and even China, all having the same outcome. They will start downloading, but slow to a crawl until it completely stops the download. I'm from the US.
Strange thing is, this was the same behavior I dealt with when I lived with my dad. His internet did the same thing. Now I'm with my mom, and it still does this. I do remember our ISP saying that we need to update our cable modem, but I can't imagine an older cable modem would prevent Steam from downloading games on Linux, especially when they download perfectly fine on Windows.

My ipod Touch keeps on crashing. Started when using Echofon/FB, but now does it on email, apps, games, Google etc. How do I stop this happening? Thanks
Try here:
iOS: Troubleshooting applications purchased from the App Store
Also try:
- Resetting the iPod. nothing will be lost.
Reset iPod touch: Press and hold the On/Off Sleep/Wake button and the Home
button at the same time for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
- Restoring the iPod from backup
- Restoring the iPod to factory defaults/new iPod. -
Amarok and KMix crash on start-up [Solved]
KMix and Amarok both crash on start-up. I have no idea why they do. I checked what happens in vanilla user, and they still crash. So I ruled out settings.
This started today, which is strange, given the last update wasn't anything significant (at least for me).
This the log of last update:
[2013-09-28 01:47] [PACMAN] Running 'pacman -Syu'
[2013-09-28 01:47] [PACMAN] synchronizing package lists
[2013-09-28 01:47] [PACMAN] starting full system upgrade
[2013-09-28 01:47] [PACMAN] upgraded archlinux-keyring (20130818-1 -> 20130926-1)
[2013-09-28 01:48] [PACMAN] upgraded ca-certificates (20130610-1 -> 20130906-1)
[2013-09-28 01:48] [PACMAN] upgraded dialog (1.2_20130902-1 -> 1.2_20130923-1)
[2013-09-28 01:48] [PACMAN] upgraded file (5.14-1 -> 5.15-1)
[2013-09-28 01:48] [PACMAN] upgraded imagemagick (6.8.6.10-1 -> 6.8.7.0-1)
[2013-09-28 01:48] [PACMAN] upgraded links (2.7-2 -> 2.8-1)
Also Amarok and KMix are only media apps that are affected. VLC works, MPlayer works, even Flash (YouTube) works. If I test sound in System Settings sounds works as well.
The other application which also has problems at start-up is Dropbox, but I doubt it's connected. It says there's a permission error and the error report among other things says:
OperationalError: database or disk is full
So does that mean I have /tmp problem? It still has 3,2GB of space left (as always).
Did update of file or dialog somehow broke this??
Any help is welcome. At least give me some additional ideas, so I can post this on KDE forum. At least tell me if anyone else has the same problem.
Oh BTW: I thought it might be the problem with the new kernel. But I re-built it and check if the catalyst module got built, and it still doesn't work. So it's not driver problem either.
Last edited by Primoz (2013-09-28 21:59:49)Ironically I already solved it, but I don't know which of the two things I did solved it.
I first downgraded linux to previous version. To do that I had to go to /var/cache/pacman/pkg, where I noticed how much old packages I had, so I also did pacman -Sc.
I'm guessing this was what solved it, as dropbox also works. So I think I'll upgrade back and hopefully everything will still work.
If not well I'm kind of screwed, as pacman -Sc cleared all the older versions of linux. It was the problem with disk space and not with the kernel. So this is solved.
BTW: is there a version of pacman -Sc that doesn't remove the one version before the current? (That would be really useful)

Yosemite always crash the Steam games
I got an iMac late 2012. 2.9 GHz Intel Core i5.
I updated to Yosemite a month ago. When i trying to use the Steam to play dota 2, the game is always crash. Back there, when I was using Mavericks i havent had any problems like this.
I dont know why, therefore i reboot my iMac to factory reset. After that, I still got the same problem. When I open Dota 2 in the Steam, I got crashed. When i try to open it again, its showed that I need to install Dota 2 again.
Right now, I cant play any game on Steam.
Is there any problems with my Mac? Or just the Steam app crashing with Yosemite?
Please help.
Thank youContact the developer of the game. Their game is probably not compatible with Yosemite and needs an update.

You probably want to start a 32-bit application with bumblebee on a 64-bit system. See the "Note" box in Installation.
but I have all needed lib32.
Or am I wrong?

[Solved] All Steam games have low FPS
Hello Archers!
I have recently switched back to Arch a few weeks ago and did not have these issues. However, I did a reinstall due to my own f**kup (it was faster to reinstall) a couple days ago and since then I have had terrible performance with Steam games no matter if I set them to low settings and low resolution or in windowed mode. The only thing I have done different from that install versus this one is I installed KDE instead of Gnome. This issue happens with all games I have and a list of most played are below. I am using the Open ATI driver due to the FGLRX driver not wanting to use both of my monitors at once. Has anyone had this issue before? I am going to look through the Gnome packages and see if there are any graphics related packages that I may try to install.
System:
Core i7-2600k
12GB of RAM
2x AMD Radeon 6950's
256GB Crucial SSD
1TB HDD
2TB HDD
1000W PSU
Games:
Half-Life Series
Dota2
Portal
Bastion
X3 Series

When I touch the secret passages icon to load it the progress bar completes and then the game won't start it goes back to windows. I really like this game but if it carries on I might have to delete it sadly
Have you checked to see if there is an Update for the game ?
Also... Try This...
Close All Open Apps... Sign Out of your Account... Perform a Reset... Try again...
Reset ( No Data will be Lost )
Press and Hold the Sleep/Wake Button and the Home Button at the Same Time...
Wait for the Apple logo to Appear...
Usually takes about 15 - 20 Seconds... ( But can take Longer...)
Release the Buttons... -
I have the CS:GO installed on my new alienware 17 (june 2013) but when I try to run the game the game crashes and nothing shows up. it is note worthy when I disable the mSATA acceleration from Intel rapid storage technology (disabling Intel Smart Response
Technology) the game loads without any problem.
Either RAM and mSATA has been checked and are working correctly and have no errors. Other apps and games are working correctly. The system has the following Specifications:

I have reported the same thing to the steam support team with no reply up to now.
Any help would be appreciated.

It is software related and either a problem in the game or the OS. You can check the OS by running a system file check but I suspect it is the game
Please run a system file check (SFC)

Help me please, games crash on launch, youtube videos won't play.
Whenever i start up sound blaster cinema it just crashes, it will be fine for about 10 seconds, then it just crashes, it will usually freeze up everything when it crashes only thing i can do is move my cursor around, it will unfreeze after 10 seconds or so as well.
I have tried to update sound blaster cinema but there are not updates available.
It would usually go back to normal after a shutdown or a restart but this time it wasn't having any of it.
Can anyone suggest anything that i couldn't think of?
The crashing first started a month+ ago, but today when I was playing L4D2 a boomer explosion crashed L4D2 and sound blaster cinema simultaneously and now sound blaster cinema won't stop crashing after launch.
(Edit)
I can't launch any games, i try to play the game osu! and it launches normally except the screen turns black and then it crashes. i try to launch steam and login but the login menu wont pop
I can't even play a youtube video, the background of the video will show but the video won't play, it's not buffering but the video is loading.
windows media player won't launch as well, videos on my computer will not play at all.(FIXED)
I went and downloaded thee intel(R) driver update utility 2.0 went to find drivers and then to auto detect and updated my drivers.
This is the driver that helped me. vvvv
( Iris, irispro, and hd graphics driver for windows*7/8/8.1 version 15.36.19.64.41.70 )
Sound blaster cinema doesn't crash on launch anymore, neither does my game osu! and youtube videos now play. -
[SOLVED] Firefox 26 Crashing - Assertion Failure
Hi all. Since the upgrade to Firefox 26, I've been experiencing lots of crashes. I am currently on 26.0-2, but the issue was also prevalent on 26.0-1. Basically, after starting Firefox, it crashes with no warning, usually either within the first 10 seconds or a few minutes later.
I've tried starting Firefox from a terminal to see any errors and strangely enough, when I do that the crashes are much less frequent (the problem almost disappears and FF can last several hours). I eventually caught a crash in the terminal and it says the following.
(firefox:12326): Gtk-CRITICAL **: IA__gtk_clipboard_get_for_display: assertion '!display->closed' failed
This problem exists for me with both regular Firefox from the Arch extra repo and Nightly from the AUR.
Can anyone shed any light on this?
Thanks!

Yep, I noticed the same thing...
And this seems to be a recurring theme for me with Arch. Tomboy launched from the menu results in an unresponsive tray icon. Launched from a terminal? Works perfectly fine! The same was happening for the game Hammerwatch - worked fine if launched directly in a terminal, or if Steam was launched from a terminal, but if I launch Steam from the menu, the game crashes (unless I add LD_LIBRARY_PATH=:/usr/lib/mono %command% into the game's launch options...). I do not know what is going on, but it's really got me wondering about my future with Arch. And that sucks, because I've loved the month or two I've spent with the distro so far, other than these *really* annoying issues. I have searched and searched for several weeks, and come up with no solutions so far. The worst part is, other Arch users say things run fine for them (Hammerwatch players using Arch, posting on the Steam forums, for example). Very frustrating.

ICal cuts off text of some events in month view
I've noticed that iCal cuts off the text of some events, while displaying the full text of longer events in the month view. For example, if I create an event titled "Test Event" only "Test" shows up in the day it's created, but if I enter "Longer Eve
