[Solved] vsftpd not starting on boot

Hi,
I have problems running vsftpd via systemd on boot.
What I did: Install vsftpd, configure it properly, enable and start vsftpd.service. It works fine, but it won't start on boot; I need to start it manually.
This is what systemctl status vsftpd sais:
$ systemctl status vsftpd.service
vsftpd.service - vsftpd daemon
Loaded: loaded (/usr/lib/systemd/system/vsftpd.service; enabled)
Active: failed (Result: exit-code) since Wed 2014-01-01 21:28:21 CET; 7s ago
Process: 866 ExecStart=/usr/bin/vsftpd (code=exited, status=2)
Main PID: 866 (code=exited, status=2)
CGroup: /system.slice/vsftpd.service
However, starting it manually works fine and vsftpd is running then. I already read another topic, where a user had exactly the same problem. Unfortunately, that solution (adding network.target to service file) does not work for me. (topic: https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?pid=1251823)
This is what my vsftpd.service file looks like:
$ cat /usr/lib/systemd/system/vsftpd.service
[Unit]
Description=vsftpd daemon
Requires=network.target
After=network.target
[Service]
ExecStart=/usr/bin/vsftpd
ExecReload=/bin/kill -HUP $MAINPID
KillMode=process
[Install]
WantedBy=multi-user.target
I recently added the Requires= field, it did not change anything. Further I tried adding NetworkManager.service and NetworkManager-wait-online.service, it did not change anything as well.  Any idea how I might fix that?

After boot:
$ systemctl list-units
vsftpd.service loaded failed failed vsftpd daemon
$ systemctl list-unit-files
vsftpd-ssl.service disabled
[email protected] static
vsftpd.service enabled
[email protected] static
I am wondering that network.target is not shown when doing systct list-dependencies; vsftpd.service only depends on default.target and multi-user.target. Why is network.target not shown?

  • [solved] systemd services not starting at boot (or at all)

    On my router, some systemd services fail to start at boot.
    The services are :
    adsl (pppoe connetction on the wan interface)
    shorewall (funny again for a router)
    logind (brings up only tty1, and not the others with a 'timeout' error)
    adsl starts fine manually after booting up
    the others don't work, I have to launch shorewall with the old sysvinit rc script (and it works)
    I really don't know, what happened to logind...
    Last edited by scar (2012-11-30 10:20:44)

    cups: avahi client failed
    adsl: timeout (ppp0 running on eth0, the service did not found eth0)
    shorewall: did not work by the systemctl command, only with the old rc script
    I'm not sure if there was an error with logind, but I've had only tty1, not all the others (I have not touched /etc/inittab)
    since this was a very old install (but up to date), I've decided to reinstall the whole thing,
    Everything works
    (But reinstalling does not solve any problem, it erases the problems...)

  • [SOLVED]dhcpcd does not start on boot anymore

    Hello,
    I reinstalled Arch last night to try and be as to the letter as possible because I had three bad installs( or so I thought https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=195192 ) and it was going well. I tweaked some SSD Optimization configs and went to bed.
    Today I wanted to install OpenBox so first I tried to update my system with pacman -Syu (without reading the change log or anything of course) and I couldn't download anything. A quick ping to google.com gave an unknown host error. Nothing has changed over night and I rebooted the machine last night a couple of times and I always had internet connection. The guide said that dhcpcd runs automatically on boot and I looked through the change logs at the places I understood and couldn't find anything about this being disabled on boot now. I do see that it was updated in the last 24 hours but again, nothing about auto run on boot being disabled.
    Little things like this bug me, I can enable the service using systemctl and call it a day but I was wondering if I was the only one experiencing this. If I'm the only one then it probably isn't a good thing.
    SOLVED: Did not read the Beginner's Guide within context of the installation medium.

    What packages were upgraded? If I am understanding you correctly, dhcpcd was enabled and working fine before the upgrade, but after the upgrade dhcpcd appears to be disabled. Is that correct? Two bits of informaiton you should post here are the complete list of updated packages and the output of
    systemctl status dhcpcd
    SirMyztiq wrote:Nothing has changed over night and I rebooted the machine last night a couple of times and I always had internet connection.
    You previously say you upgraded then went to bed, so that would be the change. I'm a little confused by these seemingly contradictory assertions.
    I apologize for the confusion.
    I'll give you the current list of packages as soon as I install a browser on my machine(I'm on my laptop) but I can tell you that all I had last night was the "base" and "base-devel" packages installed. I mainly did tweaking like setting the scheduler dynamically on my ssd to "deadline" following the SSD Optimization wiki and read a bit about OpenBox to make sure I get it right. I also rebooted the computer a couple of times to check for that "time out" bug I mentioned. It all checked out, so I went to bed.
    I power her up today, try to do a system update and I wasn't able to. A ping to google.com gave me an "unknown host" error. I checked both the "status" and whether it was "enabled" with their respective systemctl commands and both gave me the feedback that it was not active nor was it enabled.
    I'll edit the original post to be more clear and look like I have some grasp of English.

  • [SOLVED] wicd-gui starts on boot, although not in rc.conf

    Hello,
    since I seem to can#t find the solution I quickly ask here for some help.
    I was using wicd as network manager. But then I switched to the gnome networkmanager.
    Thus, I removed wicd from the daemons and added networkmanager.
    However, now networkmanager works as wanted, but the wicd-gui still starts after boot (wicd is not running).
    Where do I nee to change the config in order to disable not only wicd but also wicd-gui?
    Thx!

  • Ssh does not start at boot

    Hi All
    As my title explains, ssh does not start when I reboot.
    I can start it like: ./usr/lib/ssh/sshd
    So my question is: how can I change this behaviour and let ssh start at boot ?
    Thanks a lot in advance
    Luca

    thnx a lot!!!!

  • LaunchDaemon does not start at boot, but manually

    Hi all
    I have a LaunchDaemon entry for apache that does not start at system boot.
    It contains the following keys that might affect the behaviour.
    <key>OnDemand</key>
    <false/>
    <key>RunAtLoad</key>
    <true/>
    I can manually load the script using
    sudo launchctl load /LibraryLaunchDaemomns/org.macports.svn.plist
    Maybe I did not fully understand the LaunchDaemon concept. My program is
    a wrapper that will start svnserve as a standalone server.
    As I mentioned earlier it works fine manually, both "load" and "unload" successfully start and stop the service.
    I'd appreciate any comments
    Thanks a lot

    Good evening
    I want to startup my SVN service on a local RAID volume, but need to wait
    until it is mounted. To do so I added the following to my daemons plist:
    <key>KeepAlive</key>
    <dict>
    <key>PathState</key>
    <string>/Volumes/RAID</string>
    </dict>
    Maybe this is useful to someone in this forum.
    Cheers

  • [SOLVED] cups not started under systemd

    Under systemd cupsd is not started automatically; but manually run
    systemctl start cups
    start it. In trying to figure out what happens I see that the install section of cups.service contains the following:
    WantedBy=printer.target
    But nothing seems to depends on printer target. I have just changed that by
    WantedBy=multi-user.target
    and everything works. Anyway, either there is a bug that I have corrected, either I have missed something. The original printer.target seems to have nothing that depends on it. Could someone tell me what's the proper way to configure printing under systemd.

    Now cups start properly and everything is fine. I do not know if is due to an upgrade or so, but I put solved now. Thanks for the explanation of the printer target.

  • [SOLVED] NetworkManager not starting wireless at startup

    I am new to Arch Linux and my only problem so far has been the wireless. At startup NetworkManager loads fine but it does not bring up the wireless. I know when it is on by the orange light by my power button. I have atheros card and use ath9k. After I login there is still no wireless on. I go to network manager and turn wireless on. (gnome shell). Everything works after that. For troubleshooting, I put in rc.conf "ifconfig wlan0 up". The message is get is wlan0 no such device or something like that in similar words. I have removed that from rc.conf but despite the error message my orange light turns on but networkmanager does not detect it. I press click the wireless on and the wireless starts to connect. In terminal if I do ifconfig wlan0 down, NetworkManager takes a while to detect that this has been done and then turns the wireless back on by itself. I am pretty sure I have something minor in the installation instructions. Any help is much appreciated.

  • [SOLVED] Nouveau Module not starting at boot. Starts with modprobe.

    I am currently using 64 bit arch linux along with grub2 for the boot loader. When I boot into arch the nouveau does not look to start. If I run dmesg it has no mention of it. Once I am in the system I can run modprobe nouveau and it starts up fine.
    my mkinitcpio.conf has the following for the modules configuration: MODULES="nouveau"
    I have rebuilt the image with "mkinitcpio -p linux" and remade the grub configuration with "grub-mkconfig -o /dev/sda" . I also made sure nouveau was not in the modprobe blacklist because I did have the nvidia drivers installed before hand.
    Any ideas on why nouveau doesn't start after Grub?
    Last edited by PupNSuds (2013-10-18 01:49:41)

    Thank you for pointing that out. I did follow that but I forgot I had also tried an older NVIDIA driver 304 to be exact. So instead of running the exact command they had I ran "pacman -Qs nvidia"  which displayed the following.
    local/libvdpau 0.7-1
        Nvidia VDPAU library
    local/nvidia-304xx 304.108-8
        NVIDIA drivers for linux, 304xx legacy branch
    local/xf86-video-nouveau 1.0.9-1 (xorg-drivers xorg)
        Open Source 2D acceleration driver for nVidia cards
    So knowing the package name I removed it with the same command but with the proper NVIDIA version. "pacman -Rdds nvidia-304xx" . Every thing seems to be working now. Thank you again.

  • [SOLVED] Xorg not starting on non-root user [My First Linux]

    Hello, I recently turned back to linux after digging up my old ASUS EEE 900a, which I messed up with partitioning fun after trying to cram Windows XP on it and etc. Anyways, I managed to fix it, and after Ubuntu being too big, I was turned on to Arch as a good distro, and I've been having a very good time setting everything up so far.
    Anyways: My issue arises after needing to use a different user in order to use Chrome. I created a new account and tried to run startx like I usually do. It spat out the usual few lines, but failed and gave me this log:

    I've tried looking for this problem elsewhere as it feels like such a newbie problem to have, but I have had difficulty. There are two errors in this log, I think, but they didn't mean much to me... Any help for a linux newbie? Thanks!
    EDIT: Solved; as pointed out below, I needed a window manager for a non-root user to use.

    Well, soon you'll have to try out one of the more minimal options, in which you don't use any desktop environment but instead you install your own window manager (openbox, dwm, i3, etc) and use small, dedicated programs.  Given your extreme space restrictions, I recommend going that route! But, take your time because that requires a bit of learning: you need to figure out which parts of a desktop environment you really need, then you need to learn the proper names for them so that you can search for information, then you need to start fiddling with configurations, etc.  Better first to make sure your first Arch Linux installation is up and running properly and to learn a bit about the system before entering that downward spiral.

  • IMac - OS X - Will Not Start / Safe Boot / Boot to CD

    Unit:
    2007 iMac with OS X  ... unknown version
    Problem:
    Will not boot. Upon pressing power button it attempts to go through startup procedure then grey-screen and error message (You Need to restart your computer. Hold down the power button until it turns off, then press the power button again.)
    I have come to understand this is called a "Kernel Panic"
    I have been researching this issue all day. I cannot get it to safe boot by pressing the shift key. It does pull a progress bar but ultimately fails and returns to the kernel panic.
    I have attempted to start from the CD to attempt utility disk, but I cannot get it to boot from CD. I have held the C key down. I have pressed it repeatedly. I have used it in combination with the alt/control/command keys. All have failed.
    If anyone has any idea what might can be done I thank you in advance for your assistance.
