Some annoyances

well, I've been using arch now for a few months, I switched from ubuntu for the speed (before that I was using fedora).
And anyway, there are a few annoyances I still cannot work out how to fix and I would wondering if you could give me some solutions.
First, is when I insert a device, it gets recognised, but not mounted until I click on it, this is quite annoying as I am used to inserting a disc, or a USB device and having it mounted automatically and shown on the desktop, now I am using gnome 2.14 and the hal and dbus from the main repositories, hal and dbus are loaded in rc.conf, are there any other things I would need to load for this? or do I need to write some things for udev?
Second is the CD not ejecting when I press the button on the drive, and having to use "eject" to do it for me, I'm lazy with that
and Third, every time I try to compile gnome 2.16 from the PKGBUILDS or download from shadowhands repository, I always end up with a broken gnome desktop. GDM will load, then I login and gnome loads, but it has just two panels and the plain desktop, no icons, no text, and I cant click and drag or anything.
Any help would be greatly appreciated, sorry for being so stupid

About CD: maybe you should install eject (pacman -Sy eject)
About mounting media: maybe you should enable some options in gconf-editor (/desktop/gnome/volume_manager/automount_drives and /desktop/gnome/volume_manager/automount_media).
And check if you have gnome-volume-manager, hal and dbus-session running.

  • Some annoyances in quake2

Hi Quake2 from aur is working pretty much flawless here, however I'm kind of having some minor issues that aren't really important in gameplay but that I'd still like to solve:
I have a spanish keyboard, but the key besides the 1, that shows the console simply isn't mapped by quake, so I'm using F1, but it's quite... off. ¿is there a way to remap that key while I'm running quake2 and heve it back to normality when I close it? I think it would be quite simple, just a thing of using xmodmap in the init script (I launch quake2 from a script because you need to be placed in the directory of the game to launch it, or else it doesn't find the game files, so my script right now all it does is to store the directory you are in in a variable, switch to /opt/quake2, run sdlquake2 and then it goes back to the previous folder, I could do the same with xmodmap, but I just don't know how to use it).
The other thing is that when I play with a fov greater than 90 the hand dessapears, which is kind of unconfortable since I'm used to it to see what weapon I'm using and to control the grenade launching time (in fact my shooting button switches the weapon to the center, shoots and makes it go back to the right), any option in config file/compiling time I can use to make the freaking hand appear?.
If you can solve my doubts I'd be really thankful

From what I recall, you can't make the hand reappear if you change the fov to >90.  Back in my day, I'd play with an fov of... 120 I think?  I got used to the hand being not there - takes a while, but you do get used to it.

  • Firefox 4 will not start on Windows 7 64bit

I just upgraded my installation of FF3 to FF4 and the installation seemed to go off without a hitch.
I left the "Launch Firefox now" button ticked and hit finish. Then nothing...
I can see that the process is being started (from Task Manager), but it doesn't do anything. There is no safe mode option available for me to try and restart it, so my only option is to kill it.
I have tried installing normally, advanced, "Run as administror", restaring my PC; none of these worked. Every time the process starts, but nothing happends. Not even a task bar windows comes up.
In the end I had to download (in Internet Explorer, yuk!) an older version of Firefox (3) and reinstall using this. This at least made it work again, but I still can't get FF4 working!
I updated it on my other personal PC and it worked fine (all addons the same, but older hardware).
In case it's relevant, I have heard of some annoyances with hardware acceleration and if I could get to the option to turn it off I would.
    My particular hardware is:
    Processor: Intel(R) Core(TM) i7 CPU X980 @ 3.33GHz
    Memory: 12288MB RAM DDR3-1600MHz
    Hard Drive: RevoDrive X2 240GB
Video Card: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 580 SLI
    Monitor: LG M237WDP 1920*1080
Sound Card: M237WDP-1 (NVIDIA High Definition Audio)
    Operating System: Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit (6.1, Build 7600) (7600.win7_gdr.101026-1503)
    Motherboard: Asus Rampage III Extreme
All drivers are up-to-date, bar my OS which is fully up-to-date bar having SP1 installed. No other application are having problems.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks.

    Solved it!
It was a dodgy version of Firebug (1.6.2) running, which would kill the disable/update process. It was killing something on the first run that would corrupt my Firefox.
    How I fixed it:
    * Download the latest Firefox
    * Install Firefox 4 (as Standard) in-place upgrade
    * Before finishing, un-tick the "Run Firefox Now" button
    * Hit Finish
    * Find Firefox in the Start Menu and hold Shift and click the executable (safe mode)
    * Leave everything disabled
    * You should now have a working Firefox!
Remove/update your add-ons as needed. I only had to upgrade Firebug in safe mode to get it working.
Odd how the check for updates completely broke this Firefox, wonder what was so bad about Firebug.
Hope this helps at least one other person! The "Run in Safe Mode" option is so hard to discover now when your browser is broken!

  • IMac failures

I have tried unsuccessfully to find an email address for Apple, where I can give critical feedback about my iMac experience and expect to have some response.  The only feedback channels make it clear there will be no response and I fear it disappears into a black hole.  So I'm posting this here in the hope that someone might offer a contact e-mail or reflect on my experience.
I bought a 21.5" iMac in 2010.  Just after the end of the Applecare agreement, the DVD drive failed and had to be replaced at my expense.  Last year the screen went blank, other than grey pixellated stripes and the faint log-in icon.  Assessment by our local computer repair shop (not an official Apple retailer/repairer, but experienced in dealing with Apple issues) suggested that the graphics card (Nvidia G-force, I think) had failed, probably with the solder connections having melted as this was a problem that had been a common issue with my model/age of Mac.  Indeed, they thought that Apple had repaired this fault free within a certain period of purchase.  They suggested the most economical way of repairing this was a specialist in London, with a three month guarantee.  I took this option and 3 months and 2 weeks after the return, the same fault occurred again.
I decided enough was enough and have bought a new iMac....albeit with some annoyance and without total confidence.
Am I just unlucky?  Am I unreasonable to think this level of component failure is unacceptable?  Apple charges a significant premium for its products (its record profits recently announced are unsurprising).  Given the quality of build and design that they presumably regard as justifying this, is a 4.5 year lifespan for an iMac the norm?  My use is purely domestic and way below the use that many Macs must experience.

    Stamfordian
Yes Apple had a succession of badly designed iMacs. The white 24" iMacs were a particular problem. I had two fail with identical problems.
I also had problems with the first 24" Aluminium iMac with failed network card and power board. I insisted Apple replace it after the second repair still did not fix it.
The hard drive failed in my 27" iMac 30 days after I bought it. I was particularly upset because when I researched it, it was a known problem, but Apple did not warn me and I lost a fair amount of work.
In my long experience Macs suffer from design failures due to Apple trying to slim down the design too much, causing overheating, or because of some other unusual and unconventional technology which proves more experimental than practical. Some of their components, at least the cases, are better built and better material but otherwise Macs are not any more reliable than modern PCs which if bought from major suppliers are very durable.
Apple works hard at the myth of superiority to justify their higher prices, it is hard to get them to even talk about problems, they will just go silent unless it flares up into a major media story.
As compensation the service and support from AppleStores is good and the unified hardware/software leads to less finger pointing when you have a problem, Apple has to own the problem and fix it if it is under warranty. I have had entire units replaced if I made a clear case for it, without too much fuss.

  • ICal search bug

After upgrading to Tiger and iCal 2.0.2, events prior to the date of the update are not searchable any longer (although they do appear in the iCal window). Re-typing these events by hand allows the search function in iCal to be find them. Very annoying ...

    Hi Carlos, welcome to Discussions.
This is a topic that has come up before here. Doing a search for 'search' I came across a link to this page iCal: Unable to find events created prior to 10.4.2 update which probably would have saved you some annoyance.
    Best wishes

  • How do I turn off video autoplay in Internet Explorer?

I do not want any kind of videos or animations to play unless I choose to click on the "Play" button.
This includes Flash, HTML5, GIF, MP4, or any type of video that may be invented.
What would be ideal is to have a new set of controls in Internet Options that would allow the user to control/override the video controls in all web pages.
For example, HTML5 has the <video> ... </video> element that has certain attributes:
    autobuffer
    autoplay
    controls
    loop
The user should be able to control each these attributes on a global basis for all web pages. For example:
    Control Panel
    Internet Options
    Advanced tab
    Video options (new category)
autobuffer - yes or no (new option)
autoplay - yes or no (new option)
controls - yes or no (new option)
loop - yes or no (new option)

    Hi,
web designers make the choice to annoy you or not with autoplay or scripted autoplay content.
Contact the website administrators to make your complaints or add the sites to your IE Restricted sites zone which will stop some annoyances but not all... Ensure also that you have turned on Tracking Protection and ActiveX Filtering (Tools menu in IE).
Possibly a developer could create an extension for IE that would do all that you want sites not to do, but I don't know of any, and generally recommend addons free browsing.
Post general questions about IE to http://answers.microsoft.com. Include with your questions the full address of any websites you are having issues with. This allows the support engineers to visit the problem sites
    to investigate and make recommendations.
this forum was for questions about html, css and scripting for website developers using MSIE browsers.

  • Why does PS show only 256 color Steps in a 16 Bit per channel workflow

    Hi forum-members,
I am a bit confused about the way PS (CS5) acts with colors when editing pictures (RAW-converted) in RGB 16 bit per channel mode.
(please don't mind, if I am using some wrong English expressions here - since the PS at my work is German)
--> I would expect, that I would be able to select from a variety of 65535 (=16 Bit) color steps for every R - G or B channel ... bus PS still let's me select just 256 (=8 Bit) colors per channel (in the color palette on the right - also the "color pickup tool" will show 8 Bit values - the image certainly has 48 bit color depth).
Why am I asking? I will get a display capable of displaying 10 bit colors per channel in PS (NEC PA241W, ATI FirePro V5800, DisplayPort --> 30 Bit colors in Adobe PS) next week. And thus I need a better color resolution (which would mean: 16 Bit in PS) to avoid banding-effects.
Does anybody know why I can't select more colors here or how to change this behaviour?
Thank you very much in advance for your answers!
    Blendax74

    Hi Mark,
I already managed getting it to work :-)
First I did not succeed and I had to reinstall my system (because of driver issues of the remaining nVidia driver - my old card...).
After reinstallation and performing all necessary steps (as descripbed here: http://www.amd.com/us/Documents/48108-B_ATI_FirePro_Adobe_10-Bit_FAQ_R5_Final.pdf) I now get 30 Bit color ...
... which is AMAZING! You really can see the superior quality in almost every picture. Colors are very accurate and especially in dark shadows or skys you get a much better color rendition (now its indeed hard to see the color values of a color gradient anymore...).
Also have a look at this page related to 10 Bit output: http://www.amd.com/US/PRODUCTS/WORKSTATION/GRAPHICS/TOOLS/Pages/tools.aspx
And don't forget to download 'ramp.psd' from the page above - it's a good tool to proove wether everything has worked - if you're really running on 10 Bit you will not be able to see any banding within this picture (with 8 Bit you'll see a few vertical bars... moving up to 10 Bit will result in a smooth gradient)
As with every good news there are also some annoyances (at least till now, since I think it's "only" driver problems ... so there's a good chance, things will change further in the future):
    - First of all: 10 Bit per channel ONLY works with the "professional grade" graphics cards (ATI FirePro), don't try this with a Radeon type card - it simply won't work. Similarly nVidia adds 10 Bit support on display port only on the QuadFX series (very expensive!). And I just can speak for ATI FirePro cards, since this is, what I am using here. Since the cards are physically identical to the "gamer" versions I think this is a way to promote their "professional grade" cards by the vendors. (BTW: all supported ATI cards are included in the pdf mentioned above)
    - ATI: with the latest ATI driver (8.7xx) will loose some abilities (OS is Windows 7, 64 Bit): first, you will loose your Aero display features, since there's some background process running that prevents Win7 from using Aero. I guess, this could be due to a lack of alpha blending capability of the driver (or hardware?) when used in 10 Bit mode. If you don't need 10 Bit it can easily be turned on and off (+ Reboot), so that the effect is NIL in "normal" operation mode.
Second I recognized some trouble using certain apps: especially playing BluRay get'S trouble, for HDCP is not detected anymore - the BluRay player tells, that HDCP is not supported by the monitor. Again, the error is gone if switching back to 8 Bit mode.
    - There's no way to select the "new" colors in Adobe PS (this is - in my opinion - a bug in Adobe PS and should be fixec someday). I "worked around" this by generating a 16 Bit RGB picture with a smooth gradient --> now you can pick even the finest colors using the pipette tool... which works fine.
After all: working with 10 Bit p.C. is a great pleasure! Of course you need 16 Bit RGB pictures (which are huge sized) to get the plus in color rendition - but I am well willing to pay the price - the images are just looking great (and the PA241W is the right tool to get there - a very well made monitor! Really worth the price - equally addictive like Eizo's GC series).
Hopefully I could help you - please don't hesitate to reply if you need further assistance!
    Best regards
    Roland
P.S.: Yes, this forum is WAY better than most on the net - very reliable and professional support! With support of "real" Adobe engineers - congratulations, Adobe! Very much appreciated.

  • Issues, bugs and crashes with Email on C5-00 5MP

    Hello,
I recently bought a C5-00 5MP and all is fine except some annoyances mostly in the email app.
Sometimes it crashes when exiting the email app leaving the phone useless and I have to hard reset the phone (battery out or hold down power off), this happens quite often and is extremely annoying.
Secondly when replying to an email I have T9 text on. I have disabled the 'predictive' text as it causes more grief than it's worth. If the T9 picks the wrong word I cycle through the options with * and select the one I want by hitting 0 as I want to add a space afterwards. However on hitting zero rather than adding a space it goes to a new line! This utterly infuriating!
Finally, I downloaded the excellent Nokia Evolve theme as a free gift, but unfortunate as lovely as it looks and presumably may cut down battery usage being a lot of black, the background of the email app remains white and the text of the emails in the inbox is white but the background also remains white! Impossible to see the email subjects unless you move the cursor over the email title. i tried turning off and on again but to no avail.
The email editing issue is particularly annoying and the more I use it the more it makes me wish I had gone for the Nokia E5...
    Please help?
    Vicky

    Hi!
Have the same problem. Do you already have a solution?

  • Nokia n8 update time

seems to me nokia's hardware designers are at the top of their game, while their software engineers are trained to school boy level. Why on earth are we getting upgrades for subtitles when the phone has been buggy for months. Where is the priority! The market capitalization of nokia makes it one of the world's top companies, with substantial income. A company like this should take days and weeks to fix bugs not months.
If i were a shareholder id be demanding a new software team.

But surely if the testing process really was so complex, then we wouldn't have all these problems in the first place...
I hope Nokia have learnt some seriously fundamental lessons from the launch of the N8. They won't however actually feel the pain of this whole fiasco for some time until we're due to renew our handsets...
    R
Whilst I understand your position, I will exclude myself from your 'we'.  Whether it is because I have a simfree Nokia-supplied N8 unencumbered by crapware installed by the operators or not, I have few of the seemingly critical issues reported on these forums. I do have some annoyances with the Ui, but am happy to await firmware updates to improve these over time, as I think the N8 hardware is superb, and am very happy with it.  So, for me, the N8 has in no way put me off Nokia.  Rather the reverse.  It proves handsdown that Nokia are capable of engineering the best devices in the world, and I believe we will see this trend accelerate.
Fair comments MikWag. You're clearly well into your N8. The main issue I have with the handset is its inability to be used as a phone. I like many others have problems with the proximity sensor where calls are put on hold or ended by the screen being in contact with my cheek. I don't think it's asking too much for the handset to be capable of making calls. My first mobile 16 years ago did it perfectly well. This is my second N8 handset because the first died after 3 days and wouldn't charge. The naff music player I can live with as I have an iPod which Nokia have failed miserably at copying. Are you saying that as yours is SIM free these issues are network specific? If so, many of us on this forum should be posting elsewhere. Selling futures by promising upgrades etc is unnacceptable. The product clearly hasn't been through sufficient testing.
    R
Hi Rooster - don't think I am unsympathetic to your problems - it is very frustrating to have the sort of problems you are having.  However I have had no such problems, and on visiting a phone outlet in my Tesco store recently I was told by them that they had shifted a lot of N8s and had none returned.  Perhaps they went back to Nokia ....? Nor am I pointing the finger at the networks, for loading the phones with crapware, although as an ex-IT guy, I can't see that that would AVOID issues, especially when some of them disable features on the phone and various other things.  I am just saying that it is curious that I have had none of these problems, and I know of at least one other guy who reloaded the firmware having unlocked his phone, and it appeared to remove the problems he was having.  I should add that this is NOT a route I would recommend - if you buy their phone then you must put up with them meddling with it - part of the contract.  That is why, after previous experiences, I went for a sim-free N8 bought direct from Nokia.  That having been said, Nokia have admitted that some of the N8s shipped DID have problems and it seems you may have had 2 of these - if so, you have been very unlucky.  It doesn't stop the N8, as far as I am concerned, being a great bit of kit that I have no problems with, and yes, I am even beginning to really love it.  As the most voluble people (no criticism of you personally) are understandably likely to be those with problems, then forums like these CAN give a very one-sided view - that all N8s are **bleep**.  I just wanted to redress the balance a bit.  From where I sit, I am very happy with mine.  I hope you get your problems sorted soon, and that you hang on in there long enough for the upcoming firmware updates.  The potential is for this phone, with better firmware, to be a real winner all round.

  • Please Help Me..!! Ipod Classic 120gb

    Hello Friends Please Help Me...
I Just Bought an IPod Classic 120gb In Second hand. While Buy The Condition Was Good. Once I Connect In My Laptop It Ask Me  To Restore. I Restored Successfully Then I Load Some Songs But It Showing In Others Not In My Music (It Shows No music). Another Problem Is Many Times Its Reset Automatically .

I am sorry to hear that your experience has been so bad with your iPod. As I said, there are some annoyances - some people may be more bothered by them than others. And of course, losing ones music (more than once) is a major deal.
One note concerning one of your complaints - the low volume. Since you mentioned you paid Euros, I would have to guess that it was purchased in the EU. Apple was sued over the maximum volume several years ago by the French government which ultimately resulted in the EU regulating maximum volume in all MP3 players. Units purchased in the US do not suffer from this issue (as my ringing ears can attest to on more than one occasion). And I actually reduce the gain on all of my albums to reduce the distortion that current record producers introduce into the music with over-compression.
The one issue I wholeheartedly agree with you on is the pausing. Though to me it is nothing more than an annoyance (and it happens only rarely), I can see how it would REALLY bother someone. As far as other players are concerned, I've had issues with those as well - a SanDisk device that suddenly decided to show duplicates of all of my songs. Of course, the SanDisk did not cost nearly as much as my iPod.
Are iPods either the best or the worst of the MP3 players on the market. I can't say as I have not done the research. I agree though, that there is plenty of room for improvement.

  • Jsp Vs jspx

What's the advantage of using jspx over jsp?
    Thank you.

I like it because modern systems like Eclipse 3.2 and other XML sensitive parsers can do a better job of identifying problems with JSPX format.
I think JSPX also automatically gets rid of <!-- --> comments before generating the page. And it has some annoyances too, such as having to escape things like &. So to spew   in your HTML you have to say   Also you can't have <script ></script> because the XML parse will contract this to <script />, which then will not be properly parsed as HTML (you solve that by saying <script ...> <jsp:text /></script>).
Fun. Seriously, despite these flaws I like JSPX better.

  • ITunes sync hangs on Calendars

There are so many threads and discussions on this and similar that i decided to try and start fresh and provide users out there with a detailed description of my issues and how I finally resolved it. Some of my paths to resolution may have been unnecessary.
I suspect if I had simply upgraded my iPhones IOS from the get go I MOST likely would have fixed the issue then and there!!!
Suggest you read this first - then make your own call!!
    Systems:
    Mac Air:
    - Mountain Lion v10.8.2
    - MS Outlook for Mac 2011 v14.2.4  (using IMAP for several gmail a/c's and others)
    - iTunes v10.7
    - iCal v6.0 (1645)
N.B.: before upgrading to Outlook 2011 I experienced many bad experiences with corrupt Entourage d'bases. Net result was I set up Mac Mail to run as a background process (same IMAP connections etc) - this paranoid approach continued even after upgrading to Outlook 2011. Result - complete confidence that I have a full set of all my mail history should MS die an ugly death again!!!
    iPhone 3GS
    - previously running IOS v5.??
    - now running IOS v6!! more on that later!!
    History:
After a recent OSX upgrade and a MS update (both coincided within a few days if i recall correctly) when syncing my iPhone (running IOS v5.??) iTunes sync started to hang at Step 3: calendars.
I followed all manner of suggestions from this community and others to no avail.
So this is what I did:
Ensured Mac Mail was complete and up to date as well as backed up to Time Machine AND I generated archive copies just in case!!!
Followed the steps to completely remove MS Office.
    Reinstalled MS Office from scratch.
{side note: got to last stage of install and had a really hard time completing because syncservicesagent would not die!!!! This support article resolved that and enabled me to move on ...
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1627
"In the Terminal window, type or paste the following command on a single line:
    /System/Library/Frameworks/SyncServices.framework/Versions/A/Resources/resetsync.pl full
    ... close side note}
Here I made an error. I set up Outlook again whereas I should have thoroughly tested iPhone syncing via iTunes to iCal without Outlook in the mix.
Reset mail and calendar settings in Outlook - got it syncing with iCal again.
Plugged in iPhone - iTunes sync still hangs!!!!!!
Kick some stuff - generally vent some annoyance.
Hit iPhone software restore in iTunes and go through the process of restoring the iPhone which actually upgrades you to IOS v6 (which I wasn't ready to do but so far so good).
    iTunes sync no longer hangs!!
Tested all permutations of meetings ...
from iPhone  - turns up in Outlook
from Outlook - turns up on iPhone
from iCal - turns up in both
Only remaining weirdness is that whilst the iPhone and Outlook seem to be talking just fine - meetings generated in Outlook or on iPhone don't show up in iCal yet I thought iCal was the conduit!! My suspicion is it is something to do with iCal Calendars and Outlooks Categories not being compatible. Anyway's net result meetings sync between iPhone and Outlook.

Yes, I'm running ESET NOD32. I've disabled NOD temporarily but it still hangs on Calanders when syncing! Any ideas?
Many thanks. There's a couple of alternatives.
Either try the procedure in Samoreen's post:
Re: iTunes 11.1.4.62 freezes while syncing with Outlook
Or, see if you can get hold of the Eset beta addressing the problem. As Samoreen notes in another post:
ESET have a workaround for this issue. They gave me access to a test version of the HIPS module and this fixed the problem. So I could re-enable the ESET_OPTIONS environment variable (although I still consider that it's a questionable idea). I upgraded to iTunes 11.1.5.5 and there was no problem.
So maybe you should get in touch with ESET support and request the new module ? Just send a message to Marcos in the ESET forum.
Re: Outlook 2013 Calendar Sync fails with new iTunes 11.1.5.5

  • Counterintuitive usage of wifi settings on e71

    Hi,
I'm having some annoyance using wifi settings and I'd like to make sure it's not me doing something dumb. As far as I can see if you are on an hidden AP it needs to be defined manually in "tools -> settings -> connection -> access points".
Using "always ask" doesn't seem to list the user defined access point. This could also be ok if not that all applications seem to have their own access point setting, meaning that if I'm forced to use "User defined" to use the hidden access point and then I go to a cafe for example I have to change all the apps again to use the public and visible cafe's wifi.
If that's how it really works to me it's rather annoying and it would be much better if simply "always ask" also contained the hidden AP the user defined.
    thoughts?

    Hi,
I think that when "always ask" is enabled and when you are trying to connect then you can see all the access points that are currently within the range (inluding the user defined and hidden APs). If you go to area where the hidden AP can't be heard then it's not shown in the list. So you should be able to use "always ask" setting in the scenario you described.

  • Don't fear the penguin...

Ok, so I had intended to dump Vista in favor of XP for performance reasons.
Turns out that Vista doesn't suck too badly after a ram upgrade, though I'm still not a huge fan.
I had also tried an Ubuntu live cd and was impressed that it almost worked.
The wifi didn't work automagically on the very first boot, and by the time I got back to it to check it out, it would no longer boot. I had used Wubi to install on virtual discs, and apparently grub puked and it could no longer read the fstab'ish entries.
If that makes it sound to the non-linux community like I know Linux, let me disabuse you of that notion right now.
Linux and I have fought a running battle for over a decade.
I loaded zipslack on a crash box at work when I supported Win95, just out of pure spite.
In those days, if you got the mouse working in X, you felt like you'd accomplished something.
    Fast forward to now:
I was reluctant to risk my work files on a dual boot setup, so I grabbed a new 120g drive from the local shop. Popped it in, booted to the cd, let Ubuntu have it's way with the new drive, and answered the few obligatory questions.
Went and grabbed some coffee, smoked a smokem, and came back to my shiny new desktop.
    Sound and wifi weren't happening.
Rather than type "man man" in terminal, I cheated and just googled.
Loaded the restricted drivers and let synaptic go grab the firmware to activate the wifi card.
Also grabbed  WifiRadar and Kwifimanager, since the gnome wifi applet is a joke, and I'm an old man who needs his gui.
Wango-tango and up comes the wifi.
Dumped the wired ethernet, and started googling for the sound issue.
Found what looked like reasonable edits for the config file, copy/pasted them, rebooted - bam!
    I now have audio.
Feeling emboldened, I then loaded compiz so that I could have a sexy desktop "cube" and it again worked without fuss.
The only thing that sucks, is that I now have to repeat this, since I failed to install XP first and I really don't feel like doing the dance required for a post-linux dual boot.
Not a huge deal, since I have nothing on this drive other than the OS.
If Acclaim would do a linux port of 2Moons, I would dump windows entirely.
Currently, I have Transmission downloading an iso, several browser windows open, Evolution is running, RhythmBox is playing Black Betty from Virgin's streaming server, Brasero is open but idle - waiting to burn the iso, and I'm remoted into our server on the other desktop panel, polling timeclocks and doing server maintenence.
Just checked System Monitor -  cpu is humming along at 25-45%, and mem usage is solid at 34% of 2 gig.
I don't think I ever saw mem usage dip below a gig in Vista once I bumped it to 2 gig.
I just checked the kb function keys - even *they* work.
My great fear now is that some annoyance will crop up at some point for which I know 7 different kludges in windows, but whichs completely baffle me in linux, and I'll slink back to XP with my tail tucked between my legs.
    So far, Epic Win.

Nah, it sounds like you are there - you are free.
I believe that you can use your integrated webcam too - look for a program called 'cheese'

I am a volunteer here. I don't work for Lenovo

Biggest problem for me is Energy Management and Bluetooth.
Here's what I did to install Bluetooth:
    - Install Energy Management for Windows 7
(It will give a warning that program isn't compatible, ignore)
       Enable the bluetooth device
    Install latest drivers from Broadcom:
    http://www.broadcom.com/support/bluetooth/update.php
    (this will reboot your PC)
    Then uninstall "Lenovo energy management".
You should be able to enable/disable bluetooth via windows and turn it off in Device Manager.
Some annoyances, the 'bluetooth' status light is always on.
I've tried both Energy Management 8.0.2.3 (Y580) and Energy Management 8.0.2.20 (Y570) and both aren't working properly with the Y560.
I almost kind of regret 'activating' bluetooth since I find the light indicator that stays always on annoying.
Hopefully there's update for the Y560, this is my last Ideapad laptop, just awful support.
