my rig:
pentium d 930
msi 945g neo
sapphire 1600xt
thermaltake tr2-470 470watts
seagate sata2 200gb hdd
ocz ddr2 533 ram
lg dvd+-rw
sony floppy driver

1). Take the motherboard out of case.
2). Unplug all hardwares and power cords, then clear CMOS as the mannual has described.
3). Plug one memory, VGA card and power cords, then start the system and check if it could boot. After this if the system still cannot boot properly, then please try other VGA, memory, if possible.
4). If the issue persists, check current MB bios version. As to how to identify bios version, please refer to here. This CPU should need bios suppport. So you need flash MB bios version to the latest one using another compatible CPU. As to how to flash, please refer to here. You could mail to MSI support to get the newest bios.
You could also use MSI Liveupdate to upgrade your MB bios automatically.
After this, shut down PC, reinstall the PD930 cpu to check if the screen could POST.

I assumed this would help my problem with not being able to open apps like Preview or TextEdit since I installed Mountain Lion. Instead, first I'm prompted to enter a password, then once I do that, I get an error box telling me the Library needs repairing. So I click on Repair, and once again I'm prompted for a password, which I enter, then the same error box opens, and so it goes. Can anyone help me with this problem? I'd greatly appreciate it.

Back up all data. Don't continue unless you're sure you can restore from a backup, even if you're unable to log in.
This procedure will unlock all your user files (not system files) and reset their ownership and access-control lists to the default. If you've set special values for those attributes on any of your files, they will be reverted. In that case, either stop here, or be prepared to recreate the settings if necessary. Do so only after verifying that those settings didn't cause the problem. If none of this is meaningful to you, you don't need to worry about it.
    Step 1
If you have more than one user account, and the one in question is not an administrator account, then temporarily promote it to administrator status in the Users & Groups preference pane. To do that, unlock the preference pane using the credentials of an administrator, check the box marked Allow user to administer this computer, then reboot. You can demote the problem account back to standard status when this step has been completed.
Triple-click the following line to select it. Copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C):
    { sudo chflags -R nouchg,nouappnd ~ $TMPDIR.. ; sudo chown -Rh $UID:staff ~ $_ ; sudo chmod -R u+rwX ~ $_ ; chmod -R -N ~ $_ ; } 2> /dev/null
Paste into the Terminal window (command-V). You'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you don’t have a login password, you’ll need to set one before you can run the command. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator.
The command will take a noticeable amount of time to run. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign (“$”) to appear, then quit Terminal.
    Step 2 (optional)
Step 1 should give you usable permissions in your home folder. This step will restore special attributes set by OS X on some user folders to protect them from unintended deletion or renaming. You can skip this step if you don't consider that protection to be necessary, and if everything is working as expected after step 1.
Boot into Recovery by holding down the key combination command-R at startup. Release the keys when you see a gray screen with a spinning dial.
When the OS X Utilities screen appears, select
    Utilities ▹ Terminal
from the menu bar. A Terminal window will open.
In the Terminal window, type this:
    res
Press the tab key. The partial command you typed will automatically be completed to this:
    resetpassword
Press return. A Reset Password window will open. You’re not  going to reset a password.
Select your boot volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name) if not already selected.
Select your username from the menu labeled Select the user account if not already selected.
Under Reset Home Directory Permissions and ACLs, click the Reset button.
    Select
     ▹ Restart
    from the menu bar.

  • Problem with repaired neo fis2r

I am experiencing performance problems with my neo tha t I am not sure where to begin trouble shooting. I had an video card falure(delaminated pin on agp ) which resulted in damage to the agp slot I rma 'd my neo and it returned marked repaired with a grey agp slot , bios 1.4 ( had 1.6 installed) and the same serial #. I reinstalled all components. noted the retrograde bios and flashed to 1.8. then I attempted to return all settings to theyre original state only to find that I can't overclock! previously I got 250mhz clock with perf mode set to ultra turbo and ram set to 333mhz . now I can't get past perf mode fast and 205mhz no matter what. I see references to bios 1.8 as being not very overclockable.this may be the problem but  the waters have been muddied by the multitude of events. I am not an expert and do not know where to start. I was so thrilled with the performance of my neo and now I am at a loss . Is the bios responsible for this abysmal performance or is my system still compromised? I don't know what to do to determine its state. my system is as follows:-
    neo fis2r( of course)
    2.4c p4 with zalman alcu 7000
    ati 8500dv
    512mb samsung 400mhz ram
seagate barracuda sata 150 raid 0
    pci modem card
    thermaltake xaser2 case
any suggestions would be greatly appreciated
    kev

essentially I am not just concerned about it's current inability to overclock. but more in the fact that b4 the repiar of the board I was able to overclock with no difficulty and no special considerations. in fact when I look at my little log of bios settings the agp clock was set at 66.6/33.3 after all the overclocking. and now with EXACTLY the same components( ati card repalced but physically identical)  none of those same settings work. did the failure damage other components whose failure is not yet critical path or has the bios upgrade caused instability?

problem with PT8 NEO Y VGA ATI SAPHIRE 9250SE

From the VGA test report: http://www.msi.com.tw/html/products/mainboard/testreport_pdf/6799/vga.pdf for the board , i can't find ATI Radeon 9250SE , but it is obvious that MSI only tested their Nvidia cards and no ATI cards. So, you'd better to try Nvidia cards or contact your VGA vendor to ask if there is the latest VGA BIOS to solve your issue.
Anyway, remember to tell us the results .

I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling at least a dozen times. I have tried redownloading iTunes at least 5 times and from different links. This leads me to believe that the dnssd.dll file is not itself corrupt, but this newest version is causing a conflict with XP somewhere somehow.
Team, iTunes 10.2.2.12 has just been released. I installed it and checked, and BonJour's been updated to version 2.0.5.0, and there's a new 2.0.5.0 version of dnssd.dll on my system. So I reckon it's worth a try updating to that to see if it's of any help with your trouble.

  • Help! - Problem with TV capture following Noodle upgrade

    Hi All,
Hoping someone here can help me with a little problem i've found after upgrading to 'Noodle'.
After upgrade and switching to hwd from hotplug the bttv driver seems to be loaded okay for my Leadtek Winfast XP and i can see and hear TV using tvtime as before, (had to alsaconf after upgrade to get sound from my soundblaster live but otherwise ok).
My problem comes when i use the following command to try and capture TV:
    mencoder -tv driver=v4l2:width=640:height=480:device=/dev/video0 -vf crop=760:568,pp=lb -ovc lavc -lavcopts vcodec=mpeg4:vqscale=6.1:vbitrate=2000 -oac mp3lame -lameopts abr:br=80 -o output.avi tv://
I've been uisng this command perfectly well up unitl this weekend when i took the plunge and upgraded. Since then i can capture the video from the TV card but the resulting capture never has any sound???
Prior to the upgrade i would have to adjust my volumes manually via the gnome volume control, lowering my master and PCM feeds and upping the Line and Capture options in the capture sections. This was to ensure the volume on my captures was not too loud, but it makes no difference now as i get no audio fullstop..
    [edit]
For the record i have not upgraded mplayer to the latest version due to incompatibility with other scripts i use. The version i'm using is: MPlayer 1.0pre6-3.4.3.
I might try and upgrade this incase its an mplayer prob with the rest of the system, which maybe fixed in the current version.
    [edit]
I suspect this is a problem caused by udev or a missing device and or rights issue, but unfortunately after hours of slaving i have not made any headway and i'm not sure where to go from here. I was hoping someone maybe able to explain whats happening and perhaps offer a solution.
Its as if mencoder is trying to get the audio from the wrong feed or  something???
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Regards
    Spitbyte
PS: I have removed and reinstalled alsa and also reconfigured several times using alsaconf.

Cerebral wrote:Well, there's a quick way to test if it's a permissions problem: does it run correctly as root user?
Nope, it does exactly the same as root. So i guess its not a permission related problem. Thanks for the idea though
    I've just found this site:
    http://www.linuxtv.org/v4lwiki/index.php/TVCapture_98
and played with the amixer commands.
I have the capture options exactly as they say, save for the ID is 68. I have tried all the options 1 thru 7 and can't get an audio stream on any. (ive also adjusted volume levels)
I also noticed that there was a separate option in the full amixer listing (amixer controls) for Line playback. Out of curiosity i ran tvtime and then adjusted the volume of the Line playback option via amixer and this lowers the volume that tvtime is using.
This is interesting as i thought tvtime was using the capture channel for audio, it obviously is not and thats why i can get a feed with tvtime and not with mencoder.
So my TV card must be okay as i'm definately getting sound from it to my soundcard. The issue looks to lie with the soundcard. However, i've tried capture on my onboard sound and this does not work either. What are the chances of both sound chips failing, unlikely me thinks.
So again, i'm coming back to the idea that something has not been loaded that allows capture????
Also, if i try and watch tv via mplayer (mplayer tv:// -tv driver=v4l2:width=768:height=576:outfmt=yuy2 -vf pp=lb), then i get no sound. I'm trying to work out how to specify to mplayer which audio source to use but i'm getting lost in the man page a little (sooooooo many options ), i believe tvtime (as per man page) uses '/dev/mixer:line' as its default feed and this works, so i've just got to try and work out how to define this within the mplayer command to see if i can get sound.
My next step after this would be to see if i can route the line playback feed to mencoder for capturing ????
I dunno if i'm getting anywhere, but i'll soldier on. Please help if you can

  • Genius needs to help! problems with my video card and system

Hey guys! I'm going to post my specs first so that you get a good idea of what I'm running on:
    MSI Neo2 LS 865PE.....MAT=Slow
    Pentium4 2.4C.....FSB=233=2.8C hyperthreading enabled ~>1.55V
Corsair TwinX 1gig PC3700.....memory on "AUTO" in BIOS with timings at 3,4,4,8 ~> 2.7V
    Radeon 9700NP.....stock speeds ~>1.7V
AlienX case with 2 fan400 watt power supply and 6 case fans
    Zalman Alum/Copper heatsink fan
1:I've had this motherboard for a few months now. I upgraded my video card from a nVidia Ti4200(128meg) to a Radeon 9800 a month ago, but I couldn't get it working at 8X AGP, no matter what voltages I threw at it. I returned it for a Radeon 9700NP hoping that it would work, but it still won't.
I'm using BIOS 1.9 and since there is no option to select your AGP speed, I could only try using ATI's drivers. Once booted into Windows, there is a slider you can move to select you AGP speed. On my machine It says that It has performed some tests and has concluded that AGP 4x is the best for my system....but my system supports AGP 8X!
I've moved the slider over to 8x (which requires a reboot) at least 5 times with each card but the slider refuses to move past 4xAGP after the reboot.
2: My second problem: I had an old stick of KingMax PC3200 and decided to buy 3 more sticks. Unfortunatly, the 3 I bought did not match the one I had, so I only put 2 of the new sticks I bought into my system. Immediatly, My system would crash, lock up, files were corrupt, and I got PLENTY of blue screens of death with a long message containing: 0x0000007  with all these other numbers and "0"s. I did a search online and found out I had a hardware incompatibility problem. I never got this with my old stick of ram.
I returned the 3 sticks of Ram and replaced them with the Corsair. Put my new Radeon 9700 in, formatted my hard drive....and within 24 hours, my system locked up 3 times, rebooted itself 5 times, and gave me the same BSOD as mentioned above with the same long message.
I didn't change anything except for the memory and the video card. I've been wanting to overclock, (thats why i bought the faster memory   ) but I'm not sure what to do at this point.
I have my FSB at 233 but I'm scared to go any higher because of previous system instability at stock speeds. My RAM was running on 400 and MAT=Turbo with the most relaxed timings at 3,4,4,8.
I've given myself hours of sleepless nights formatting when my system wouldnt boot into windows; overclocking....etc. I NEED HELP. PLEASE. PLEASE. Anything could work at this point.
I'm trying to get more info on how to run my system at a 5:4 ratio, also.
If anyone has problems like me or knows what could be the problem with my system, please reply to this post, it would help me a lot. I've been trying to fix these problems for a few months now so anything is greatly appreciated.

Thanks a lot to you guys that responded. I brought my computer home this past holiday and I want to let you know where I stand as of now. I guess this thread is like my blog for my computer. I want to clear some things before my first post makes everyone confused.
1- I have only 2 sticks of memory in my system: the Corsair PC3700 TwinX 512x2
I returned the 3 KingMax I bought, and still keep my old stick just in case.
2- I am using the 400 watt power supply that came with the case. I read some reviews of the case and I know the reviewer did not have problems with the power supply. In my BIOS, there are some voltages it is weak on. Lets say: it it should be 5.00+, my power supply will be feeding it 4.96v or something like that, but I dont know, or think, that is a major problem...
3- My computer will refuse to boot if memory speeds are set at anything below 400. SO....if I want to use a 5:4 ratio and have to set my memory speeds to "333" in BIOS, my system refuses to boot.
4- This morning, I did manage to overclock my FSB to 250. Specs are as follow:
Memory Timing @3,4,4,8,4.....speed set at "AUTO".....MAT at "SLOW"
    MY 2.4C's FSB was raised to 250 = 3.0gig
AGP/PCI frequency: 67.xx/3x.xx (cant go any lower)
    CPU voltage: 1.5500
    Memory voltage: 2.75
    Video Card voltage: 1.7
Everything was fine for the whole day until I heard something click in my computer around midnight, and then seconds later, my computer froze and made a continuous beeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeep. (you can imagine)
This "click" and system crash has been plaguing me for months now. I dont know whay it happens. I was just using AIM when I heard the click and my heart stopped.
My memory speeds have been set to "AUTO" even at the FSB of 250. But I don't know if this still means my system is at a 1:1 ratio. I know the BIOS then adjusts the memory to work at 500 if my FSB is 250...so I assume it is?    I love 3gig, but somehow I feel that 2.8 is faster, since the FSB=233 running parallel to my memory, also at 233
A FSB of 250 is good enough for me, that's what I've been waiting 6 months for. If anyone knows how to set other ratios to achieve a FSB of 250+, please let me know, but as I said, my memory won't boot if its set at "333"

  • I've got a mac pro problem with the starting up, but also a red light on the logic board solidly on. Its not among the diagnostic led. It's located near the BT adapter and the front fans. Also the fans run loud also. any solutions?

    Hi
I've got a mac pro late 2006, and i am having problem with it for quite a while now. the problem i am facing is the start up process, and the red light on the logic board. Earlier I've got the two led on the diagnostic leds 5 and 6 turned on without the diagnostic button being pressed, and i think those are related to the processors overtemp. I've managed to solve that by, removing the processors and re applying the thermal compound on the heatsink. what i have left now with is the red light on  the logic board at the time i plugged in the power. At the same time when this light come on, the power indicator at the front panel come on as well. i am not sure what is this light relates to. We've replace the power supply too, and gone through the SMC reset but seems no help.
Any idea on the problem? I am desperate about it, and i will be greatful if anyone can help..
thanks and hope for your best solutions
    Kari

I can't help directly with your problem but you might check here http://tim.id.au/laptops/apple/macpro/ for a service manual which could answer your question.

  • Help please problem with export

I had some problems with safari on my imac (OS X) so I did some "repairs" I ended up deleting some keychains and I believe that is what cause the problem I'm having. However I don't know how to fix it.
When I try to export RAW images from my Lacie rugged external hard drive to the desktop into jpg I get this error...
"An internal error has occurred: ?:0: attempt to index field 'rootFile' (a nil value)"
I have a deadline very soon (in about an hour) and need help please.

Fantastic, these things always happen at the most inconvenient time!!!
When you've got the job out of the way reboot the Mac and try the export to desktop again. If it is still broken then in Disk Utility run Repair Permissions on the Mac and La Cie.
Who do I send the bill to???

    Nickolai,
I had the same problem you had... Flickering dos text and graphical anomalies. I had my G4ti4400 RMA'd back to MSI and they sent me back a shiny new (RED) G4ti4800SE (basically a 2003 g4ti4400) I havent had any problem since i got it back. No wierdness on my screen now. :D  :D  :D  I'm back to playing games like I used to. I'll bet your right and there was a bad batch of G4ti4400's.
Anyways, be patient.. The RMA process takes a long time. Mine took a month.  :P

  • Help! XP install problems with K8T Neo-FIS2R

The other day I put together a new system for a friend.  I got the system to POST properly, the diagnostic lights on the D bracket are fine, and I can edit the BIOS, and the BIOS sees all the drives properly.
However, installing XP Pro has been impossible.  I set the system to boot first to the CD, then to the hard drive (from the BIOS).  After booting to the CD, I never see the message I am used to seeing ("Press any key to boot from CD...) when booting from the XP Pro install disk.  The system thinks about things for a long time with a blank screen, then later it finally begins to do the install.  Things appear normal at this point as in any other time I have installed XP Pro.  I reformat the hard drive to start clean and then the XP install files are copied over.  I get the standard message that the system will reboot and this is where things get flaky.  The system reboots, but I never get the message once again on whether or not to boot from the CD.  So after a while the system tries to install XP once again (it would repeat this process forever....trust me).  I've popped the CD out right after the system reboots so it will try to go to the hard drive.  I just get some kind of boot failure message and to insert the bootable media or whatever.  I've even gone into the BIOS right after the reboot to switch the BIOS loading to try and load the hard drive first.  This still doesn't give me the desired results.
This is by far the weirdest thing I've ever experienced when doing an install.  I've installed XP Pro on at least 15-20 desktops/laptops of different configs and never ran into this before.
The BIOS settings are stock.  I didn't see anything in there that was really needed tweaking or that hadn't "set itself".  I haven't messed with the SATA or RAID stuff since it's not really necessary in this situation.
    Here are the system specs:
    --Antec 430 True Power PSU
    --K8T Neo-FIS2R mobo
    --AMD 3000+ 64 bit CPU
--40GB Maxtor HD (master on IDE1)
    --Lite-On DVD-ROM drive (slave on IDE1)
--80GB Western Digital (8MB buffer) (master on IDE2)
    --Sony DRU510A DVD-RW (slave on IDE2)
    --(2) Kingmax 184 Pin 512MB DDR PC-3200 Model# MPXC22D-38
    --ATI 9800 Pro
    --3.5 Floppy
All the components except the mobo, CPU, and memory are from another AMD system that was running fine.  No problems with any of the HD's or the optical drives.  All new components were purchased from newegg.
I thought that maybe I had a problem with the jumpering of the drives so I messed with those in about every possible combination.  I took IDE2 completely out of the system and just tried to get it running with the 40GB Maxtor and the Lite-On drive.  I tried about every master/slave/cable select combination but nothing was working.  In certain combinations the BIOS recognized everything as I intended.  I've pulled everything off that doesn't need to be connected.  Keyboard, monitor, and internal components are the only things connected.
I don't consider myself to be a guru at this business, but I can get through most things with enough trial and error.  This really has me stumped.
    Any help is certainly appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Heath

  • Help intermittent problem with logging in

Help i have intermittent problem with logging in, sometimes it just comes up with the desktop without any icons or dock and i have to restart the server so i can log on properly, but it doesn't happen all the time, any ideas would be appreciated???

The clients login window just shakes and won't login. I did find one thing that helps some of my Mac Lab woes.
Some students get a dock that only has 3 icons. These students also will have saving and printing problems when they get this default dock.
I think some of the problems occur when the student gets over quota, some preference files get corrupted.
    1. Student will login.
    2. Open the student's home folder. Then open Library and Preferences.
    3. Find the file com.apple.homesync.plist and delete it.
    4. Empty Safari Cache and the user's Trash Can and make sure they are not over quota.
    5. Logout and login.
This will fix some problems, but not the problem when students can't login at all.

  • Help! Problem with opening Mail

I've been having a hugely annoying problem with mail and preview, and I nor any of the wizards at my local mac store can't solve it to save their lives. So, I've come here, to the experts.
First of all, neither program will open or provide any errors with any attempt to open it. All that happens is that the icon(s) will bounce in the dock for about three seconds and that's it. So, I checked the crash log in my crashreporter, only to find two crash logs there, one for preview and one for mail. Each returns the same error message:
(this one's for mail; preview is exact with the expected modifications)
    Command: Mail
    Path: /Applications/Mail.app/Contents/MacOS/Mail
    Parent: WindowServer [94]
    Version: 2.1 (752)
    PID: 733
    Thread: Unknown
    Link (dyld) error:
    Symbol not found: _kCGPDFContextTitle
    Referenced from: /System/Library/Frameworks/Quartz.framework/Versions/A/Frameworks/PDFKit.framew ork/Versions/A/PDFKit
    Expected in: /System/Library/Frameworks/Cocoa.framework/Versions/A/Cocoa
I've looked online to see if anyone else has reported a similar problem, but I haven't found any indication that someone has. I've also looked for the symbol in superuser mode with no avail. One thing though: _kCGPDFContextTitle are associated with opening pdfs, and I think it failed after I reinstalled adobe acrobat prof. 8. I've trashed acrobat, but the problem presists.
I suspect the problem is with coca, but is there any way to fix it without archiving and installing? Suggestions and good wishes will be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Verify/repair the startup disk (not just permissions), as described here:
The Repair functions of Disk Utility: what's it all about?
After having fixed all the filesystem issues, if any, reinstall the Combo Update for the type of computer and the version of Mac OS X you’re using, unless this is the version of Mac OS X that came with the computer:
About the Mac OS X 10.4.9 Combo Update
Mac OS X 10.4.9 Combo Update for PowerPC
Mac OS X 10.4.9 Combo Update for Intel
After installing the Combo Update, the computer may restart twice and the first restart may take several minutes. This is normal.
Take a look at the following articles for guidelines on how to properly install system updates:
    Troubleshooting installation and software updates
    Installing software updates
Basically, you should verify/repair the startup disk and back up before installing the update, no applications should be running while installing it, and you may experience unexpected results if you have third-party system software modifications (not normal applications) installed.
