Sony HXR-NX5 and Sony HXR-MC50

Has anyone used either the Sony HXR-NX5 or HXR-MC50 cameras with FCPX?
I am especially interested whether FCPX can interpret large spanned clips and join them together correctly on import.
Many thanks!

Update:
FCPX does support both cameras. Although I have had one or two instances where it doesn't like the data on a SD card, because of one corrupt file, in which case FCPX crashes. (Most likely caused by a faulty SD card). In those cases, I have had to use Clipwrap to create Prores files before importing.

  • Sony NX5 and Log & Transfer - Timecode set to 00:00:00:00 for SD footage

    Hi,
I am trying to import footage from my Sony NX5 into Final Cut, and I notice that for SD footage, the timecode is not retined, it just sets this at 0.
Is this something Apple are working on fixing, as Sony says it is not an issue with the camera, rather the software?
    Many thanks

    We are on Facilis Terrablock.
Sh&t. That's it. When I read this, it was like someone hit me in the back of the head with a 2x4.
We have a 24D Terrablock. Unbelievable.
I can't understand why I didn't think of this before. we have had other little snitty issue with this thing as well. Nothing major, just little blips that didn't make sense. Couldn't build large DVDSP projects to it using hte multiwrite. And other little things.
I'll put in an email to the support (with whom I'm VERY familiar with) ASAP. I am crazy busy right now too, and don't have the time to troubleshoot very much. I have my footage, and now that I know the problem, I'll ingest to an internal drive them transfer it to the 24D. what a pain in the arse, but that's the way its gonna be until I have some time to chat with tech support.
Wow. I hope this helps you out. Is there a way to conact you off list so maybe we can share other little insights? I've yet to find another company that is using this thing that I can collaborate with.
To answer your questions, we are connected via 4gb fibre to a fibre switch with the facilis attached to the switch. We have 3 edit suites with 3 permanent volumes, one for each suite. The y are all set up single user write, not the multiwrite. We had speed issues with the multiwrite.
We did not always have this problem, and I can't recall when i updated the system from v3 to v4. Might have been connected to that.  We don't create and delete volumes per project, we just have a big bucket for each suite. We don't really share FCP projects that much, but we do share media. We don't use any MXF importers, as we like to work with self contained QT's.

  • Logging software - shrinking file size and keeping timecode

I recently found and downloaded the trial version of InqScribe Transcription Software (http://www.inqscribe.com/index.html).
It seems pretty neat. You can open up and video file in the program and it read the timecode from the file and inserts it into transcript as your typing. It says it can open ANY type of video that Quicktime can view.
Here's my dilemma - I want my clients and producer to use this program to log footage on their PCs out and about. I"m shooting with the Sony NX5 and transcoding to Pro Res LT. Obviously these files are HUGE.
I'd like to find a way that I can shrink the file sizes and keep the original timecode. I thought h.264 would be best. I can also shrink the resolution from 1920x1080 down to something much smaller.
I'm looking for an end product that is compatible with PCs and Macs, around 500mbs or less, and has the original TC.

Resize to 480x270. The data rate before compression will be 1/16 of the 1920x 1080 image. Add H.264 Quicktime compression and you'll have a small file. Verify with the company that it can read h.264 files.
When you do the conversion use Compressor and turn off Frame Controls when you do the resizing. The encoding will go much faster.

  • AVCHD and Log and transfer problems

Ok a while back we purchased a Sony NX5 and until now I haven't had to shoot any major projects with it. But every so often I have been shooting bits and pieces for our stock library. However we also have a secondary JVC GY-HM100 camera that can use the same SD cards as the NX5. So sometimes I'd shot onto a SD card in the NX5 and maybe swap it over to the JVC on another occassion.
Well I started to run into some issues that I initially thought was a result of using the same card in both cameras. The issues were that when I brought the NX5/AVCHD rushes in FCP through Log and Transfer the clip numbers wouldn't make sense, either I'd end up with duplicates or they would suddenly jump by 200-300 increments.
So to try and get to the bottom of this I shot an interview last night, but before starting I fomatted the 32Gb SD card in the NX5. The only thing that happened thereafter was at one point in the proceedings I lost power to the camera (loose cable), but it was not while recording.
So this morning I pull the rushes into FCP via Log and Transfer (L&T). The way I personally do this is to copy the whole AVCHD folder on the SD card onto my Mac hard drive and thereafter point L&T to that loctaion. Incidentally when I did copy the AVCHD folder across, inside there were 38 files in the STREAM folder starting at 00000.MTS going up to 00037.MTS.
So next I fire up FCP and point the L&T windon at said AVCHD folder on my hard drive. At this point inside the L&T window it is showing 76 clips (not 38), ie for the first half of the list it shows clips 1 - 38 followed by (further down the list) another 1 - 38 again. Both sets of clips seem identical according to what I can see on the little thumbnails.
So none the less I let L&T convert them to ProRes and guess what clip numbers it produces in my FCP Browser window? Clips 3 - 38 followed by Clips 290 - 329. Ironically clips 328 and 329 are the same as clips 290 and 291... which also happen to be the same missing clips 1 and 2 from the 3 - 38 range.
This is just driving me nuts, I can't possibly work on major projects with this going on!
I have to shoot 2 more interviews tonight so can someone give me an idea of what is happening and how I can correct it?

Thanks... and rats! Do you know whether something like Clipwrap will resolve my issues, or some other flavour thereof?
Thanks again, at least I know that it's not me doing something ultra dumb!

  • AVCHD Import looks jumpy and skips

    Hello,
I used my New Sony AX2000 (little brother to the NX5) and after importing my wedding I noticed on playback screen everything looks jumpy and sort of looks like its skipping during playback. Any time of movement or pan looks horrible yet when played on my camera it looks very very smooth.
Does my Preview window on FCPX just show it this way but the final product will be smooth?
Is it running this way because back ground rendering is still going on?
I never had this issue on previous (HDV) camcorders when importing.
Just wondering why nothing is smooth just sort of like playing back a YouTube video were your internet connection isnt fast enough so your video seems to studder - thats what I'm getting.
    Very disaapointed.

Never mind. Once FCP X finishes rendering to 100% the video plays perfect in the preview window.

  • Prores and TimeCode

    Hello,
I have a Sony NX5, and I import the images in FCP with Log & transfert, using ProRes
Is it possible to keep the TimeCode when importing the clip in Pro Res ?
Thanks a lot for your help.
    Didier

Tom is right. If you want to get the camera timecode from that new Sony camera, you need to use ClipWrap 2. I'm in the middle of a project shot with the same camera, and Log and Transfer won't bring it over, but that plugin will.
Why? Well, according to the maker of the plugin, they put the TC information somewhere, but didn't tell anyone where they put it. It took him from April until like two weeks ago to find it. So half of my show has all the shots starting at 00:00:00:00...but the latter half has the proper code.
Clipwrap is the answer. And it is faster than L&T too...

  • AVCHD 1920 x 1080 Help Please

Can any body please tell me if it is possible to remove the black bars at the top and bottom of my finished DVD, initially I start off importing my AVCHD files from my Sony HXR-MC50 into premiere pro cs5 the files are 1920 x1080. Once I have finished with all the editing I export using the following settings:-Format MPEG2-DVD, once complete I then import this into encore and burn to DVD, I end up with a DVD that plays fine however it has a black bar at the top and bottom, is there anyway these can be removed so footage fits the TV screen.
    Thanks in advance.

    Welcome to the forum:
Did you export to widescreen: the Pixel Aspect Ratio set to 1.212 (if you are on ntsc)?
Dont look at the source i am on PAL.

  • What timeline format shall i use for footage in AVCHD format?

I am shooting with the Sony HXR NX5, and i would like to ask what timeline format shall i use for footage in AVCHD format? I do not see any format in the Final Cut Pro and in Motion that matches my camera format.
Thank you very much for your assistance.
    Best regards,
    Richard

IF you are working with FCP 7.0.3 (the last version) then you use Log and Transfer to ingest your footage from that camera, and Log and Transfer will convert the AVCHD camera files to ProRes.
Once the camera files are ingested, make a new (empty) timeline, and either drag a source clip or edit it to that timeline and you will be prompted to match the sequence settings to the source clip. Say yes and you should be good to go.
AVCHD, H.264,etc. files are not directly usable in FCP without conversion.

  • Problem with one AVCHD file using L&T

I just shot a project with a new Sony NX5 and recorded to both the FMU 128 hard drive and a 32 gig SDHC class 10 card. I have a total of 3hours and 20 minutes and about 75 clips. The clips are 1920x1080 60i, again it is AVCHD.
I'm using L&T to transcode to Pro Res LT. Everything imports fine, except clip #15, which is the longest clip at 36 minutes long. FCP quits and I get an error message.
I tried the files from the cards and FMU 128 (they were copied to my internal 7200rpm hard drive and an external Lacie connected via FW800). All give me a problem on clip 15.
    I'm using FCP 7.

It says Final Cut Pro quit unexpectedly and then:

and then it keeps going. I thought the above would be the most important. I tried Clip Wrap, and that took forever!! It broke this problem child clip into 4 segments (3 of them were about 11 minutes and the 4th was a minute or so). The first clip played fine and the rest started with a green frame and were all "strobe effect" when the played. I did Clipwrap again and did "Join Selected Clips" and that seemed to work. It made the 4 clips one video and it plays perfectly.
So I got the clip to work using Clipwrap, but it wont' work in FCP L&T.

  • IMac Crashes when I render - also very slow

Having used CS5 for some time on a 24 inch 2008 iMac, I recently upgraded to CS6 when I purchased a very "new" used iMac. The iMac in question was from a work colleague who purchased it for one project then decided to buy a Macbook instead. He had it for under 5 months.
The spec is as follows: http://www.everymac.com/systems/apple/imac/specs/imac-core-i5-2.7-27-inch-aluminum-mid-201 1-thunderbolt-specs.html:// it came with 12GB RAM (bought from an Apple approved dealer)
I am loading 1080p files from four Sony NX5s and either nesting them or where required (two filming dates merged) four or more video tracks and around three our four audio tracks.
After a while the footage becomes too choppy to watch at full res, and I usually drop to 1/2 then 1/4 resolution. WIth around two or three minutes of footage on the time line the video freezes and I need to render.
Herein lies the big problem: When I render such footage the bar tracks until 99% and then the machine powers down. Although I have autosave set to every 2 minutes and I manually save the project before I render, when the system powers back up the project will revert to the start point (footage disappears from the import folders and nothing appears in the time line) - Ive checked the scratch discs and the latest version always shows as the prevous save.
This is becoming frustrating and yesterday I decided to export the footage without rendering and again it crashed with three minutes of footage with two video and two audio tracks.
Is there a fix for this? Is my hardware insufficient and should I go to a 32gb RAM on a Mac Pro?
    Any advice gladly received!

This is for Windows, but it "seems" that you have a similar problem, so some reading that MAY help with ideas

  • Another Dual Layer Break Issue

    Encore CS5.1
After about 12 hours, I am no further forward... Having trawled through a number of posts on this and similar subjects I am really up against the buffers.
The requirement is simple - getting Abobe Encore CS5.1 to "see" my request to use a Chapter Marker it gives me as one of three in the Manual Option section during the build process.
I had no issues with DL authoring in CS4, but CS5 is giving me a lot of grief.
    The outline:
I have a timeline of 67 minutes with 6 Chapter Markers. The first two are within the first 10 minutes, CH3 at 36 minutes, CH4 at 38 minutes, CH5 at 41 minutes and CH6 at 61 minutes.
I am using Verbatum DL +R DVDs (I have used no other these last three years) with a write speed of x4 or x2.4.
Once I have built the NEW project, imported the video and placed the Chapters as above (all except CH3 at fade-to-black points) I select 8.54 GB dual layer, Side one, Manual and proceed.
At the invitation to select the manual point Encore offers me CH3, CH4 and CH5. No matter what I select, it places the break point at about 33 minutes (about half way) and in doing so screws up my own Chapters by placing it's own (invisible in the timeline) chapter thereby shuffling all mine. As a result I lose sections or get repeated sections.
I tried building to Folders and using ImgBurn. This confirms the insistance on using a halfway point - same too building to an Image the chapter and cell are never my selected, always a cell at about the halway point.
Adobe Encore is not recognising my selection (at its own invitation).
I have deleted the project and cache - rebooted and built the project from scratch importing the video - creating the timeline and adding the Chapters - always the same.
I have followed some of the points given using Folders in ImgBurn - it simply is not working for me. It's almost like Encore is screwing the build and the build is the same as though the settings are held in cache.
As mentioned, I have cleared all previous builds and their files and deleted the media cache with no joy.
I'm getting to the point whereby the only choice left to me is to split the project timeline and build the project as two separate DVDs (as the timeline is only just over the capacity for a single sided DVD (3 minutes).
As for PCG Edit - doesn't seem to want to run on my workstation (PC i7 24GB RAM - 3 separate drives in RAID combo and separate OS SSD).
Can someone help me find out what has happened to Encore as it does appear that after every "upgrade" somthing gets a little worse judging by my CS4 experience.
    Many Thanks

    Hi Stan,
    Many thanks...
    Yes, running "as admin"
Not quite with you "...too much material for a layer."
I often run to about 65 mins to just fit a single layer - perfect, but this project ran over - and I can't take anything out.
I am loath to change the sample rate as my SD quality (from a combo of AVCHD and MPEG2) Sony NX5 and Z5 really hit the spot for max res in SD (9.4 Mb/s). The Encoded spec for Encore is legal (or so it would seem) for Encore in a single layer (no issues or errored DVDs), and as I said in the OP I had no issues like this in CS4 (yes, apart from the known buggy stuff).
But why would Encore offer me a number of break points in placed chapters only to ignore them consistantly?
    Another point:
My first build went through and honoured the chapters, but put the layer change halfway - but didn't screw the build. There was a production reason I had to change the timeline content - one shot change of the same duration. I would certainly settle for that at this stage. Interestingly, I built to Image and did an IMGBurn (as I do do for all DLs). But as you say, IMGBurn is choking on what's been passed to it from Encore. I am trying to replicate that first build.
By the way, all my Chapters in the timeline preview perfectly in Encore - it's just when I ask for the build it all goes wrong (seemingly).
Many thanks again Stan. Appreciate your reply.

  • Making compound clip adds unwanted black between clips

I have a 2 minute psa that was shot in HD on the NX5 and edited on FCPX. I needed to put it together with other PSAs to make a longer show so I selected all the clips on the timeline and made a ‘compound clip’. The compound clip looks like one clip on the timeline and it should be able to be copied to another timeline. When I watched it back though, FCPX had introduced flash frames of black in between all of the cuts on the timeline, throwing all of the titles out of whack as well. Why did this happen?
    1.  Original Storyline
    2.  Original storyline made into a compound clip.
    3.  When I play it back I get flash frames in-between each clip so i checked the compound clip and found that it introduced black between each clip.

I ran into this problem too and found a quick solution that may work for anyone who encounters this bug.
THE PROBLEM: In one of my Projects, when creating a compound clip of the entire Project (so that I could apply Project-wide color and audio correction), gaps were inexplicably added to certain cuts. I don't know why. I first tried to work around this by exporting a Master File, but this also created the same gaps. Ugh.
THE SOLUTION: Duplicate your Project and in the duplicate, select all and create a compound clip. After creating the compound clip, double-click the compound clip in the Event Browser. This will open the compound clip, with all its bits and pieces exposed, in the Timeline. Go to the bottom-left corner of the Timeline and click the little button there to open the Timeline Index. Do a search for "gap". Select all the results in the list and press the delete key.
NOTE: Don't forget to duplicate your original Project (before creating a compound clip with the duplicate) so that you have it as a reference and a backup in case something goes wrong. I have not carefully analyzed this glitch and am not 100% sure this workaround is bulletproof. I also am not sure what is causing the OP's titles to be "thrown out of whack" as I didn't have that particular issue, so this "fix" may not actually fix that part of the problem.

Hello, I was thinking about purchasing the Sony HXR-MC2000U AVCHD Camcorder, and was wondering if this camcorder was compatible with iMovie '11, or Final Cut Express 4. Either or would work. If anyone knows anything about this please let me know!

  • Hxr-nx30e Sony Video and Final Cut Pro X

I am waiting delivery of a new Sony HXR-NX30e Sony Video camera.  I would like to use Final Cut Pro, but have heard that there might be difficulty importing from the cameras hards disk. - Is this correct and if so what can I do?

I have Sony HDR-250e HD cancorder. No problem to import or edit your clips in FCP. Hopefully you will be able to do the same and also to export your perfect final movie file and enjoy watching it. Unfortunately this is not the case with my Sony HDR-250e. All my exported files are far from perfect. They are choppy and blurred wherever the camcorder was moving. I can't find a solution for that. When you start shooting on your new camcorder, could tou pelase shoot a couple of clips with the camcorder moving horizontally and vertically. Process them in FCP and then check if the video in the expoprted video is smooth.

  • Problems with footage from the sony HXR-NX5 camera

    Hi Everyone,
I am having a problem with pan shots taken with the HXR-NX5. These clips were brought into FCP 6.06 using log and transfer (using pro res). In the play window for the time line and trim window the shots look great, but when I export the clips the video is really jerky. I've tried lots of different compressors and compression settings and nothing seams to correct the issue. I have also done some test shots panning the camera in 1080p and 1080i thinking it might be an interlacing problem, but I just get a jumpy clips every time. Also tried some different computers and hard drives to make sure it isn't a drive bandwidth issue. Anyone got any ideas as to what is causing this, or how it could be solved?
    Thanks in advance!

Update to FCP 7.0.3...run the software updater. That solves a lot of NX5 issues.
