Sort by selection

Hi experts,
in BEx 3.5 it was possible to sort characteristics ascending or descending dependant to their key or description.
Since BEx 7 it is also possible to sort "by selection".
Unfortunately I'm obviously a bit too dumb to understand that feature - and I didn't find any further documentation about it.
Could you please bring some enlightment to me about that feature?

what I'm talking about is:
Start BEx Analyzer (Excel) open a report and open the properties for a characteristic.
Check the entries of the drop-down-field for "sort by". There you'll find the item "selection".
For a characteristic with a presentation-hierarchy enabled this sorting-option seems to make
sense: It allow to sort the hierarchy-entries freely.
But for a normal characteristic (~without an enabled hiearchy) there seems not to be a lot of sense
in this feature. It seems as if one could place exactly one char-value to a free position within the value-list,
but as soon as one tries to move another list-entry, the list is obviously resorted asc/desc first.
And that's some kind curious to me - and the reason why I think that I didn't understand that feature yet.

How to sort a selection of cells?

If anyone can answer this question I will be very grateful - here's the scoop: I need to sort the data in a selection of cells that run down several rows - but NOT all of the cells in the entire row. The last column contains formulas which must NOT be sorted - if those cells are included in the sort, all of the data they contain will be out of order and all fouled up. So, I need to select, for instance, A1:G10 - and not touch anything that is in H1:H10. It appears that with Numbers, it's all or nothing - which, if that's true, is a really big problem. I can't sort the entire selection of rows and then drag and replace the formulas in the last column - there are thousands of rows and it has already taken me an hour to straighten out this mess. I can do this in 2 seconds in Excel, which I've used for very complex spreadsheets and models for years - but I expected to at least be able to do some basic calculating with Numbers in a reasonably easy fashion. I am royally frustrated - what is the hidden secret to sorting a selection of cells without being forced to sort an entire row? Thanks for your help!

Numbers sorts apply to the whole table, or in the case of sorting selected rows, to the whole width of the table. For ANY sort, header rows and footer rows are not included in the sort.
Two ways around this limitation are to:
1.
Place the 'non-sorting'columns into a separate table, and use INDIRECT addressing to reference cells on the sorting table.
2.
Write the formulas so as to be immune to sorting. Use column only references where possible and construct cell addresses for rows other than the result row using the ROW() function.
Check the Functions and Formulas User Guide for ROW(), INDIRECT() and OFFSET() for descriptions and examples. That guide and the Numbers '09 User Guide are available for download through Numbers's Help menu.
Post a question regarding specific formulas if you require further assistance.

How do I sort a selection, not the entire table?

I have a spreadsheet in numbers that I only need to sort a selected section, not the entire table. In the previous version of numbers, it allowed 'sort selected range', but I can't find that in the newer version. When I have the selection outlined, the entire table sorts -- ??

Nobody here in the Discussions has reported finding a way to sort selected rows, as was possible in Numbers 2.3. It seems that it was just left out of the new version to streamline the interface.
The workaround would be to structure your Tables such that content requiring separate sorting would be in a separate table.

Firstly, I wasn't saying that Wayne's posts were rubbish, I said his comment about V2 not having sorts by rows was rubbish as I proved with my image. I am just really frustrated professional person who has been signing Apples and Numbers praises that has been left feeling really let down.
Personally, I do not wan't an OSX version Numbers to be the same as the IOS version. My old IOS version was perfectly adequate as was my OSX vesrion. I'm not interested in doing this on my phone or iPad BUT when I am at work on my 27" iMac, I don't want to use a piece of software that is written to be more compatible with a mobile device so I couldnt care if the IOS version has a Reorganize panel.
I'm saying that they (Apple) shouldn't dress this up as V3 of numbers. They should call it
NUMBERS LITE COMPATIBLE WITH IOS DEVICES
Which is really what it is, and then most of us who require a serious spreadsheet, wouldn't have bothered downloading it and wasted hours only to find out that it is not fit for purpose.
The problem I have is that there will no longer be any improvements to V2 so this is now what we are stuck with with the only alternative being to return to Excel, which I hate with a vengence.
Also, we are stuck with this version if we want to use sheets we create in OSX in our ipads. Once again, not even close to being acceptable.
All in all, not what I expect from Apple, or is this just the type of thing we have to expect from them now.

how can i use some particular temporary tablespace in select statement for sording without allocating any temporary tablespace to that user

Try to set for the current session the in memory sorting space to 0 before running your query:
SQL> alter session set sort_area_size = 0;The query should use the temporary tablespace.

Saving Sort Field Selection

When I open itunes I select the artist I wish to listen to, (I'm using grid view, btw) and then browse that artist's albums. However, every single time I open itunes, I must click the "album by year" column header to resort it that way. It defaults back to track number sorting every time I close and re-open itunes. Anyone know anything about this?

This has been happening since iTunes 8
I would also like to know a fix, i like grid view sorted by year as then i can click on the artists and listen to all their albums in order of oldest to newest and not in the order i added the albums
Currently i have to click into the artist and change the sort to by year before i play

CS3: elements sorting of selection object

Hi people!
I think U know that in CS2 app.selection[0] always return LAST selected object
and app.selection[app.selection.length] return FIRST selected object
its logically good way.
but in CS3 Adobe changed this order. And now sorting of objects in this array depend not from selection order.
now question: how to determine the first and last selected object in CS3?
Му collection of cs2 scripts be based on this behoviour.
Did anybody know how to solve this problem. May be exist simple way via javascript? Or harder - via third party plugins...

Unfortunately, you can no longer do that in CS3. I don't know of any workarounds.

ADF Table sorting on Select One choice column display value

Hi Team,
We are using an ADF with EJB application.
I have an ADF table, which has a select one choice in it. (The Select one Choice list elements are populated from a java bean).
Presetnly, when we perform the sorting on this SOC column, the table is getting sorted based on SOC value not on the Label.
How to sort this column based on the SOC Lable filed.
Please help us.

Hi Frank,
I took a transient column in the Entity and populated this column with the LOV label value.
In the ADF added this coulmn to the table and set it is rendered false.
Set the sortable property of the lov column to the new trasient column.
Now the sort will work with the label filed (Transient Column)

Sort only selected cells?

I would like to sort alphabetically only a selected column of cells. I don't want to sort other items in the rows. I can't seem to find any combination in reorganize that works.

And if you find it difficult or disconcerting to rip a column out of the table, you can:
click on any cell to show the column and row reference tabs.
click the tab for the target column to select the whole column
copy
click on an empty space in the sheet (ie. not on a table
paste (this creates a new, single column table containing the copied data)
sort
select the whole column
copy
click on the top cell of the original data column
paste.
Note that this will work only with data that has been entered directly. If the data has been created by formulas in the original cells, the formulas will break when the cell content is pastede into a new table.

PS: Overall, I prefer Jerry's suggestion. I do have occasional difficulty finding the 'sweet spot' when separating a column from the rest of its original table, though, and have sometimes used this alternate method.

Sorting in Selection Criteria

I have "Key" and "Text" displayed in the selection criteria of a variable. by default this is sorted on "Key" while my user wants it to be sorted on "text". is there anyway to set it to be sorted on "text" and not on "Key".

My question was when i have some selection criteria for some variables in a report and on the first screen a list of all those variables appear where i can select or write down the filter values. there i have the option to click so a new small window popsup which shows me the some possible values of that variable and i select from that (based in =,[],* etc....). I want value in that Pop Up window to be sorted on text and by default those values are sorted on "Keys"[ and even in my query properties-> Display options, i have only selected to show "text" and to sort on that in ascending order] so it seems that those options are not governing what i want to change.

Positioning/Sorting in Selection list while Refrencing in VA01

Hi!
When using VA01 with reference, on Selection list I want to find / position cursor on all items with certain material but program positions me only on first.
Is it somehow possible to go on next item with entered material or is it possible to sort items by materials on selection screen?

Sorting and selecting songs

A recent update to iTunes changed the way a sort list is presented. In the past yopu entered a key word and all playlists, artist,or songs with the string was displayed and then you could select a group of them by highlighting the one that you want and putting them into a playlist. I just keyed in the word Chester (an old American song) and the resulta are shown below in an attachment. I would like to make a playlist of the first six entries, but can only display one song at a time.
There must be a beter way of selecting all six at one time

Click the magnifying glass in the search windows and untick Search entire library to restore the old search behaviour (filtering instead of results displayed in an overlay). Pressing enter after typing your search term should also have the same effect, but you get the overlay results as you type in the meantime.

i write a coding that store data in database, that i have two column rule and weight. after that, i want to display the data with weight sorting ascending and select distinct rule.
but it's not working. nothings error but it don't do nothing.

FUNCTION/FORMULA to randomly sort, then select from rows

Hi! Using Numbers more now but still quite new. VERY used to Apple way and familiar with Automator, at least capable of copy/pasting an Applescript, and somewhat versed in UNIX. Basically need to shuffle all the entries in say "Column A" and maybe "B", and then pick from them and 'print' to a file or some other field or table. At the very least even being able to just make the couple thousand names being entered in to their-own field randomly-sorted would be a BIG help. Just in case I'm not being clear, instead of just sorting ascending or descending. Thank you!!!

Numbers will only sort in ascending or descending order, and sorts whole rows (not individual columns) on the basis of the contents of one or more columns. It will sort the entire table (excepting any header and footer rows), or will sort selected rows.
If you want to do a random sort of a column of names, you can do it by adding a column, entering this formula into all cells in the column (except header and footer cells), and sorting on the new column.
=RAND()
The formula generates a random number between 0 and 1. When the table is sorted, the sort will place those numbers in ascending or descending order (as you choose), but will then immediately calculate a new set of random numbers.
If you just need to pick a random name form the list, you can use OFFSET and RANDBETWEEN.
If the names are in column A, starting at A2, this formula, placed elsewhere on the same table, will return a random name from the list:
=OFFSET($A$1,RANDBETWEEN(1,ROWS($A)-1),0)
