Sort only selected cells?

I would like to sort alphabetically only a selected column of cells. I don't want to sort other items in the rows. I can't seem to find any combination in reorganize that works.

And if you find it difficult or disconcerting to rip a column out of the table, you can:
click on any cell to show the column and row reference tabs.
click the tab for the target column to select the whole column
copy
click on an empty space in the sheet (ie. not on a table
paste (this creates a new, single column table containing the copied data)
sort
select the whole column
copy
click on the top cell of the original data column
paste.
Note that this will work only with data that has been entered directly. If the data has been created by formulas in the original cells, the formulas will break when the cell content is pastede into a new table.

PS: Overall, I prefer Jerry's suggestion. I do have occasional difficulty finding the 'sweet spot' when separating a column from the rest of its original table, though, and have sometimes used this alternate method.

Firstly, I wasn't saying that Wayne's posts were rubbish, I said his comment about V2 not having sorts by rows was rubbish as I proved with my image. I am just really frustrated professional person who has been signing Apples and Numbers praises that has been left feeling really let down.
Personally, I do not wan't an OSX version Numbers to be the same as the IOS version. My old IOS version was perfectly adequate as was my OSX vesrion. I'm not interested in doing this on my phone or iPad BUT when I am at work on my 27" iMac, I don't want to use a piece of software that is written to be more compatible with a mobile device so I couldnt care if the IOS version has a Reorganize panel.
I'm saying that they (Apple) shouldn't dress this up as V3 of numbers. They should call it
NUMBERS LITE COMPATIBLE WITH IOS DEVICES
Which is really what it is, and then most of us who require a serious spreadsheet, wouldn't have bothered downloading it and wasted hours only to find out that it is not fit for purpose.
The problem I have is that there will no longer be any improvements to V2 so this is now what we are stuck with with the only alternative being to return to Excel, which I hate with a vengence.
Also, we are stuck with this version if we want to use sheets we create in OSX in our ipads. Once again, not even close to being acceptable.
All in all, not what I expect from Apple, or is this just the type of thing we have to expect from them now.

How do I print or export only selected cells in Numbers?

Does anyone know how to do this in Numbers? I have been trying to do this for well over an hour...... I have looked at other posters' questions first, all the way back to 2008 in fact. The closest I have seen to an answer (and it is a workaround, not a true answer) is copy the selected cells into a new sheet. I have been using software spreadsheets (Lotus 123 and later Excel) going back to the mid-1980's. I cannot remember the last time I could not do this.
Friends, I do realize that many of the workarounds would have taken far less time than what I have invested, please do not feel the need to point that out. I am heading for a workaround right now as I have run out of time to devote to this task. Also, please do not suggest that I should "capture" the data by copying a screen shot to the clipboard or have it dump a .png on my desktop. Most of us here should know how to do that by now but that does not address the underlying issue of how to provide only a select piece of a spreadsheet to a 3rd party in a professional looking format. Well, off to copy and paste........

Update (15 min later):
Boy, I hope one of you out there knows the solution to this. Copy and paste the selected area does not work either. You lose (this was an "Oh, duh!" sort of moment BTW) any figures populated by calculations not in the selection area.
Need to go eat, will try to feed the values in the new table from the same calculations in the first table. I can do that easily in Excel, I just have not tried it yet in Numbers. I am optomistic that it will work.

I made a test which gave a funny result.
Given a Numbers document with a chart.
I selected the chart, the title and the legends
then I grouped these objects.
Select all
copy
run the script
I pasted in the sheet to be able to take a screenshot.
It's a bit inconsistent.
Text values are passed when they are in cells
They are passed when they are used as value labels in the chart
but they aren't passed when they are chart's title or legend's components.
Funny behavior, the graphic symbols are moved in the process to the location where they would be if the text components were nil strings.
No comment upon a table's title which can't be selected with the table itself.

Changing Colour of only selected cells in MS excel..??

I read in SAP Help that it is possible to change formatting (colour, border etc) for few cells using style sheets, so after doing the required changes and storing it under new style name when I press SAVE on screen 3 of layout builder it changes the colour for all the other cells in my layout sheet..and if i rerun the layout if all the cells come in the changed color..plzz give me any suggestion how to go about doing it..??
and is there any way to insert subheadings/rows in my layout..?..I am only able to do it by making the row as comparison column which requires me to assign some values in all my lead columns for that specific row..which looks just same like any other row but I just want it as subheading.

Hi Rohit,
When you change the style it will change all other cells with the same style. The only way I know of to change specific cells is to use the VB exits provided. This will only work if you are not using the web.
As for your row. If you have defined the layout as one with specific row definitions you can create blank lines in the layout by giving a row number with no selections. You can then put your sub-heading directly in the excel.

How to sort a selection of cells?

If anyone can answer this question I will be very grateful - here's the scoop: I need to sort the data in a selection of cells that run down several rows - but NOT all of the cells in the entire row. The last column contains formulas which must NOT be sorted - if those cells are included in the sort, all of the data they contain will be out of order and all fouled up. So, I need to select, for instance, A1:G10 - and not touch anything that is in H1:H10. It appears that with Numbers, it's all or nothing - which, if that's true, is a really big problem. I can't sort the entire selection of rows and then drag and replace the formulas in the last column - there are thousands of rows and it has already taken me an hour to straighten out this mess. I can do this in 2 seconds in Excel, which I've used for very complex spreadsheets and models for years - but I expected to at least be able to do some basic calculating with Numbers in a reasonably easy fashion. I am royally frustrated - what is the hidden secret to sorting a selection of cells without being forced to sort an entire row? Thanks for your help!

Numbers sorts apply to the whole table, or in the case of sorting selected rows, to the whole width of the table. For ANY sort, header rows and footer rows are not included in the sort.
Two ways around this limitation are to:
1.
Place the 'non-sorting'columns into a separate table, and use INDIRECT addressing to reference cells on the sorting table.
2.
Write the formulas so as to be immune to sorting. Use column only references where possible and construct cell addresses for rows other than the result row using the ROW() function.
Check the Functions and Formulas User Guide for ROW(), INDIRECT() and OFFSET() for descriptions and examples. That guide and the Numbers '09 User Guide are available for download through Numbers's Help menu.
Post a question regarding specific formulas if you require further assistance.

How to sort only a selected area?

I'm trying to sort only a selected area (4 of my 5 columns) and not the entire table. Numbers help is worthless and nothing I've tried works. Any thoughts?

As well as copying the data to a second table, sorting it there, then pasting it back into the original table, Numbers lets you select and drag one or more columns from a table, then drop it on the sheet, where it will automatically become a new table.
Here's an example:
This is the original 10 column table. We wish to sort columns E, F and G into alphabetical order, while leaving the other columns in their original order. note the four locations where AAA, BBB, CCC and EEE appear in the same line.
Click on any cell in column E. When the column tabs appear, select columns E, F and G by clicking on the E tab, then dragging to add to the selection.
When the three columns are selected, click and hold on one of the three tabs, drag up until the columns separate from the table, then drag the selected columns to an empty space on the sheet. Drop to form a new three column table.
If you now select column A on this table and Sort Ascending, the result will be as shown:
Note that rows in the three columns moved together. If this is the result you are looking for, skip to the last step. If you want each of the three rows sorted individually, continue from here.
To sort the three columns individually, each must be in a separate table. Separate them in the same manner as you did to separate the three column group from the original table: Select the individual column, then drag it's tab up until it separates, then left or right as appropriate and drop it to form a single column table. Take care to keep the separate columns in their original left to right order.
Sort each column in turn.
LAST STEP
After sorting, drag each column (or the group of three if you did not sort the columns separately and individually) back to its place in the original table. Click on the temporary table to show the tab(s), Select the column(s), then click and drag a tab to move the column(s) to the original table. As you approach th place they came from, a double blue line will appear to show where the column(s) will be inserted if dropped. Drop at the appropriate location. If you are moving single columns, repeat until done.
Finished. Note that each of the red columns is now in order. While AAA and BBB remain together, the other 'matched sets' no longer match.

"The selected cells are read-only" error on Custom Field when trying to insert in Datasheet mode

I have a custom field that works completely fine. Yesterday our QA team found out that when trying to insert in Datasheet format, the error "The selected cells are read-only" was thrown. Any ideas? I tried passing the following property to my fldtypes_field.xml file:

Unfortunately it did not work. I also developed the code and access the field and checked its property called "ReadOnlyField" which is already set to false.

WAD execute planning function only for manually selected cells

Hello,
I have a simple standard "delete" planning function. In the WAD I add this function as a button.
Is it possible to make it so that the delete function only executes for the manually selected cells in the WAD planning layout.
I want to manually select 3 cells (3 periods out of 12 that are displayed as fixed columns) and then run the delete function which should only delete values of those 3 highlighted cells.

Deleting values in selected cells is not ossible when using delete planning function. However, there is an alternative. You can implement the How-To guide "How to Copy and Paste in BEx Web Applications for IP http://www.sdn.sap.com/irj/sdn/go/portal/prtroot/docs/library/uuid/80220fed-0e6d-2b10-bbb9-f6af76dee0cc"
Then in delete script function which is called on delete button you add code to call REFRESH_DATA command as well.
So whatever cell you select and then click delete the data will be deleted and by REFRESH_DATA the same will be updated in planning buffer.

How to disable selective cells in a column of a table?

I have a Table UI element having 5 columns. 4 of this are non-editable and only one is editable i.e. having input field . The data is picked from the backend. The 5th column also gets default data from the backend, which the user can later on change.
But there is a condition, that only the input fields from that row onwards should remain enabled whose month field matches the current month. Rest all should become disabled or invisible.
I worte the code in the wdModifyView() which picks the current date, and then in a loop it checks all the rows for the condition. If it matches the condition, it comes out of the loop, else it sets the enable property of input field to false.
But when i run this application, all the cells become disabled, not selective cells.
Is there a way in which I can sort this problem, any API using which i can access each cell by its row number and column number and then disable it.
If anybody could please help, it is urgent.

Create a subnode with cardinality 1..1 and boolean attribute IsEnabled right under your data node. Write a supply function for this subnode, and set boolean attribute value depending on month in parentElement (parameter of supply function). Then bind InputField "enabled" property to this boolean attribute.

How do I change the colour of a selected cell in a jTable?

I have a Jtable that displays URL names in one column. There are several problems I'm having. The effect I'm trying to achieve is this:
When the user runs the mouse over the URL name the cursor should change into a hand (similar to what happens in an HTML hyperlink). I'm aware that the Cursor class can set the cursor graphic so i figure that i need a listener of some sort on each cell (so the cursor can change from an arrow to a hand) and also one to indicate when the cursor is not on a cell (so that it can change from a hand back into an arrow). Is this the right track?
Also, I've looked at the DefaultTableCellRenderer class (which, as i understand it, is responsible for how each cell in the jtable is displayed) for a method that will allow me to set the background of a selected cell (or row or column). I require this because each time i select a cell (or row) it becomes highlighted in blue. I would rather it just remained white and changed the cursor to a hand. I know there exists a method for setting the background for an unselected cell but none for a selected cell. Again, I'm not sure if I'm going down the right track with this approach.
Lastly, if the cell has been selected (by a mouse click) the font of the writing in the cell (i.e. The name of the URL) should change. This shouldn't be too much of a problem I think.
I do not expect anyone to provide code to do all of this but some general pointers would be extremely helpful as I do not know if I'm thinking on the right track for any of this. Having some (limited) experience with Swing I doubt there is a simple way to do this but I can only hope!

Selecting cell when invoke popup

I have a table where the user can select the table cells with a mouse click, if they do a right click its brings up a PopupMenu but this doesnt effect what cells have been selected.
Ive looked at Microsoft Spreadsheet and if a right click is done over a cell that has been selected, all the cells selected remains but if it is clicked over a cell that is not selected then the cell that has just been clicked on becomes the current cell instead.
This seems a better way of doing it., so does anyone know how I can achieve this prefereably in a way that is both OS independent and input device independent.

but make sure that
1) sync music is checked
2) you have playlist with songs in them
3) your songs have some sort of sorting form on them (artist, genre, album, etc.)
also try
rebooting pc and device and reconnecting
if all else fails, redownload itunes

Need a better way to reset selected cells in a table

Hello all,
I have been looking at the various threads discussing resetting only selected fields in a form and leaving others unchanged.
The form I am working on has a table of 20 body rows with 8 columns. I want to have a reset button that resets 6 of the cells in each row.
I am using the following snippet:

This works but is extremely slow (on the order of 10 seconds) and my pc is no slouch. There has to be a simpler (and faster!) way to do this.
I saw one thread where the cells that were to be spared from the reset could be listed but just could not make that work at all. I thought about putting the cells to be spared into a subform but that went nowhere, as I was only able to place individual cells into separate subforms.
Any suggestions will be welcome ... with formcalc script if possible:)

Just two small issues. I would wrap the first for loop in {} and then you have i++ in the second loop:

It looks like your table is static (rows do not repeat). One option would be to build up a variable/string with the objects names and then reset that. This is a reset example from one of our forms (http://assure.ly/gBJYj9). Here it is resetting one row and two fields outside of the table:

A problem to get the value of a selected cell

Hi all,
I am trying to get the value of a cell in JTable. The problem that I have is ListSelectionListener only listens if the selection changes(valueChanged method).
It means that if I select apple then rum, only rowSelectionModel is triggered, which means I do not get the index of the column from selectionModel of ColumnModel.

This is a piece of code from JTable tutorial that I modified by adding
selRow and selCol variables to keep track of the location so that I can get the value of the selected cell.
