SPACE UTILIZATION OF TEMPORARY FILES

Hi DBAS..
I need to confirm the behaviour of Oracle temporary datafiles asap.
I had tried to increase the temporary files of one of my database temporary
tbsp.
After I had increase the space, it noticed the space utilization had not
changed at all, even though the filesize of the temporay datafile is correct
based on the unix command : ls -l.
Below is a replica of my action:
1) Before Incr of Size of Datafile-
SQL> select file_name, bytes/1024/1024 from dba_temp_files;
FILE_NAME BYTES/1024/1024
/oradata/VEPD/d07/temp_01.dbf 50
/oradata/VEPD/d04/temp_02.dbf 100
SQL> !df -m /oradata/VEPD/d07
Filesystem MB blocks Free %Used Iused %Iused Mounted on
/dev/lvvepd07 2176.00 370.29 83% 11 1% /oradata/VEPD/d07
SQL> !ls -l /oradata/VEPD/d07/temp_01.dbf
-rw-r----- 1 oracle oinstall 52436992 Jan 16 10:28 temp_01.dbf
1) After Incr of Size of Datafile-
SQL> alter database tempfile '/oradata/VEPD/d07/temp_01.dbf' resize 300M;
Database altered.
SQL> !ls -ltr /oradata/VEPD/d07/temp_01.dbf
-rw-r----- 1 oracle oinstall 314580992 Jan 16 11:11
/oradata/VEPD/d07/temp_01.dbf
SQL> !df -m /oradata/VEPD/d07
Filesystem MB blocks Free %Used Iused %Iused Mounted on
/dev/lvvepd07 2176.00 370.29 83% 11 1% /oradata/VEPD/d07
SQL> select file_name, bytes/1024/1024 from dba_temp_files;
FILE_NAME BYTES/1024/1024
/oradata/VEPD/d07/temp_01.dbf 300
/oradata/VEPD/d04/temp_02.dbf 100
The result (aft the incr) for 'ls -l' is expected.
BUT, is the result (aft the incr) for 'df -m' an expected behaviour??
Thanks
JD

Your observation is correct.
Unlike regular datafiles, Oracle will not actually occupy the space reserved for temp datafile until it actually need to use it.

  • Why do I get error 'Could not create temporary file. No space left on device" when I use the Engine Installation Wizard in TestStand?

The process gets to the NIVISA\SETUP.INI step, then I get this error.
I've tried with installing the MDAC and not, and it happens both times.
The drive I'm trying to create the file to has 7.4GB open on it, so I'm not sure why this is happening.
    Thank you,
    Dave Neumann

    Dave,
This is documented in the KnowledBase 2D6A63VW titled: "Error: Could Not Create Temporary File, No Space Left on Device".
As RByrd suggested, you might need to free up some memory space in your System Temp directory, OR you may change the location of your System Temp directory to one with more space (such as the directory where you want the TestStand Engine files to be saved). The Knowledbase shows how to do this step by step. This is its URL:

  • Space for temporary files

    Hi,
how much of free space should be provided for temporary files. Is it depends on the app's ? If yes, any estimation ?
    Thanks.

How much space is your Other using? You may be able to reduce.
How Do I Get Rid Of The “Other” Data Stored On My iPad Or iPhone?
    http://tinyurl.com/85w6xwn
With an iOS device, the “Other” space in iTunes is used to store things like documents, settings, caches, and a few other important items. If you sync lots of documents to apps like GoodReader, DropCopy, or anything else that reads external files, your storage use can skyrocket. With iOS 5/6, you can see exactly which applications are taking up the most space. Just head to Settings > General > Usage, and tap the button labeled Show All Apps. The storage section will show you the app and how much storage space it is taking up. Tap on the app name to get a description of the additional storage space being used by the app’s documents and data. You can remove the storage-hogging application and all of its data directly from this screen, or manually remove the data by opening the app. Some applications, especially those designed by Apple, will allow you to remove stored data by swiping from left to right on the item to reveal a Delete button.

  • TS4272 erase free space stuck on creating temporary file

I upgraded to 10.7.4 and followed instructions in http://support.apple.com/kb/TS4272
At step 9 Disk Utility is stuck on 'creating temporary file' for the last 24 hours. I have canceled and tried more than once.

This may be a problem with Disk Utility on your boot drive. Try rebooting to the Recovery HD and using Disk Utility on that partition (it should appear in the OS X Tools menu). You might also try running a disk verification and repair to ensure the filesystem and partition structure are intact.
Alternatively you can also bypass the disk utility application by using the Terminal to erase free space, which can be done with the following command:
sudo diskutil secureErase freespace 0 disk0s2
Note that while the device "disk0s2" is commonly the boot drive for systems with a single hard drive, this may be different for you system. Check the device by opening Disk Utility and getting information on your boot volume, and you should see the proper device name listed as "device identifier."

  • Disk Utility - Erase Free Space - Creating Temporary File Freezes

BDAqua:  I tried responding to your reply to my original posting but I get an error message that I was not authorized to reply.  I logged out.  I can't find the original posting in my Activity so I approached from the link in my e-mail saying you had replied.  Now it says the area is restricted.  What's up with that?
    Rod
    Here's the original post:
I used "Erase Free Space" with Disk Utility after trashing several files I no longer wanted on the hard drive or recovered.  I used  "Zero Out Deleted Files" option.  It took over 12 hours before an error message appeared "Your start up disk is almost full.  You need to make more space available on your start up disk by deleting files."   I thought that was what I was doing.  Disk Utility continued but got stuck on "Creating Temporary File."  I force quit Disk Utility after several more hours.  I had to manually shut down the computer because the restart command wouldn't work.  It rebooted and appears to be OK.   Evidently, this temporary file consumes significant amounts of disk space. This is an older iMac with 10.4.11 (18 GHz PowerPC G5) - I know, pretty old but I still have OS 9 on it and several files I need to extract before I trash it.
    1.  Should I do nothing?  The iMac seems to be working fine.
    2.  How do I know if this Temporary File exists and consuming space?  Spotlight doesn't find it.  Where is it?
    3.  Is my start up disk in fact almost full?  How would I know that?

Here's what I tried to say in my response that I wasn't authorize to make:
I can't seem to reply to your response BD . . . says I'm not authorize . . . so I'll try to reply to my original post.
Thanks BD for your reply.  Here's the info on the drive:  1.3 TB capacity with 1,017 GB available.  Eventually I will recycle the computer at Best Buy who guarantees the hard drive will be erased.  I just want to get all my files off first.  I'll just do another Erase Free Space and see, as you suggest, if there are any files to be zeroed out.  Maybe there aren't any.  I've extracted most of what I want but am debating how to move the entire iPhoto library to an external drive so I can access it from my Mavericks machine.  Can I just drag and drop the iPhoto Library, or do I need to export it somehow?

Then I would not do any secure erasing. It's exceptionally time consuming and unnecessary. Before you take it in for recycling boot it from your OS X installer DVD. Do this:
    Drive Partition and Format
    1. Boot from your OS X Installer Disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button.  When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Apply button and wait until the process has completed.
    4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
    5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Security button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
    6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.
A one-pass Zero Data option is all that is required to prevent access to your erased files.

  • Why can't the Utility function's 'Erase free space' create temporary file

I've been using erase free space without problem for some time.. Then today when I tried to use it, got an error message to say that erase free space won't work because it can't create a temporary file. I have a 320 GB MBP with 88 GB of free space.

  • Unable to save PDF's from Internet Explorer. Error "The document could not be saved. The disk you were saving to or the disk used for temporary files is full. Free some space on this disk and try again, or save to a different disk."

  • How i can change temporary files directory on firefox 3.6.8 because my system disk has little space

how i can change temporary files directory on firefox 3.6.8 because my system disk has little space

In Firefox, the equivalent ofInternet Explorer temporary internet files is the cache.
You can change the location of the cache by adding a new preference, for details see http://kb.mozillazine.org/Browser.cache.disk.parent_directory
If you are not confident about adding the preference, I know of one add-on that lets you specify the path of the cache. [https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/13288/ Super Tab Mode] is an add-on that enhances Firefox tab handling, but also has a section for changing the location of the cache

  • How to delete temporary file created by disk utility

I recently ran the DISK UTILITY to erase free space. During the "CREATING TEMPORARY FILE" phase the process was interrupted. I had 250GB of free space now I have none. When ERASE FREE SPACE is run, what is the name of the temporary file and where is it located so I may manually delete it? The HARD DISK UTILITY shows I have zero free space

Restart the computer and empty the Trash, or delete any file. Click here for more information.

    try this..
REP-118: Unable to create a temporary file.
Case 1: The environment variable that determines in what directory to create temporary files is set to an invalid directory.
Case 2: There is not enough free space on the disk to create the temporary file.
Case 3: A temporary file that cannot be modified already exist

  • Change destination for Temporary File cache?

I am using latest FCS versions with Compressor 3.0.2. I am exporting a 1-hour HDV file from FCP for HD DVD disk using the H264 Multipass 10.3Mbps setting. I found to my cost that a temporary file is generated which is about 2x the final file size (i.e. about 8.5GB) and this is saved on my startup disk at user/library/caches/temporaryitems. I didn't have that much space so my 30-hour rendering was aborted.
Now I value the space on my startup disk! OSX and FCS has already been hogging huge chunks of it!!
Anyway, my question is does anyone know if it's possible to relocate this temporary file to another disk?
    Thanks

    No.
UNix apps store their tempfiles preferred on the 'system partition' of your harddrive.
on my setup. ALL libraries (= the Gigabytes of iTunes, iPhoto, iMovie...) are external.. free your int. HDD is best advice ..

  • Change path for temporary file

    Hi !
During an iMovie project, export directly to iDVD fails because the free disk space that is used (system disk) is not sufficient (about 10GB).
It's possible change the temporary file pointing to a external drive that has lots of free space?
    The situation is the configuration:
    - Disk System with about 10GB free
    - External firewire disk where saved the project and imported movie with 200GB free
Thank you in advance for solution.

  • Temporary files with a "~" in the file name

when i open an html file i see that another file with the same name, plus a tilde sign (~) after it, is automatically created in the folder that this file sits in. this is supposedly a temporary file? these files are  NOT temporary, they never go away. and they start adding up in my folder and it gets very confusing as to which file i'm working on. sometimes there will be a file with two "~ ~" in them.
when i close the "original file", the tilde files don't disappear, they stay. On top of that, to make things more confusing, there is also some weird autosave function and i also get files that say filename(Autosaved). Before i know it there are 10 files with various names sitting there and it gets very confusing to know what is the "real" file.  does anyone know how to stop the creation of these "temporary" files? i'm enclosing a screenshot that shows all these files with tildes and the autosaved  file.

Sorted. Well sort of. I still have the problem but I know why. Apparently O2 will not allow anyone to send an attachment which has a space in the name. They claim that this reduces spam - no idea why they think that will stop spam but there you go...

  • Stuck on "creating a secondary temporary file" in Disk Utility

Hello - I am erasing free space on my Time Capsule, and it has been stuck on "creating a secondary temporary file" for over 14 hours now.  Is this normal?  If not, what can I do to safely solve the problem?  Any advice would be appreciated...thank you!

Look in one of thse 2 locations:
    /var/root/Library/Caches/TemporaryItems/
    /Volumes/YourVolume/.TemporaryItems/folders.UIDNumber/TemporaryItems/
You can use Finder -> Go -> Go to Folder to navigate to these locations.
You could also try using OmniDiskSweeper (free download) to find the huge files, just be careful about what you delete, as it is possible to make your system non-functional if you delete the wrong things.  The TemporaryItems stuff is safe enough to delete.  It is other huge files you might find that I worry about.
