Spacing between characters too large when using line justification !!!!

Dear friends,
Since the first time when I have used Pages I noticed a somewhat annoying feature: Sometimes when I use line justification (left and right) the spacing between the characters increase substantially. Sometimes the spacing is ridiculously large. I guess that I have mad something wrong, but I do not know what. Can someone give me a hint what I should do to overcome this irritating aspect?!

There is no doubt that Mellel is a much better application than Pages in a lot of areas. It has been around for longer, it is more mature and it is actively maintained. Pages is of course better in a lot of other areas - and there is room for both on the market.
Mellel handles hyphenation in a much more advanced way than Pages and it has support for example for soft-hyphens, editable hyphenation dictionaries and hyphenation zones - something Pages lacks.
When it comes to the large space between characters, however, I cannot say that Mellel has invested a lot in making it look good. They just chose the simplest solution, just like MS Word, to increase space between words - not between characters. They even use this as an example of something ugly in Mellel's own user guide: "For example, the following text is fully justified but not hyphenated. The spaces between the words look wide and make the text look quite ugly."
As mentioned before, in some cases increasing space between words is the most pleasing solution to the eye. In some cases adding some space between characters is more pleasing, and that is the reason why Apple went to the extra trouble of adding that functionality. In many cases, it is not obvious which way is best, and people will have diverging opinions.

Hello. Thank you all for giving my some advise but I do not understand any of it.
I'm a bit of a technophobe when it comes to computers.
It is a Sony Vaio and there is a model number on the base of the laptop PCG-71911M. I have tried to look in the Control Panel to see if I can find its specifications but these days the system is too complicated for me to understand.
I did try seek out the information on the internet but just get a French site. Doh!!!
I use Nikon View NX software when I am viewing my images and again if I go to full screen for viewing the image the taskbar 'occludes' the little arrows I use to view the next image. When this happens I just click the little box in the far right edge of the taskbar and ViewNX 'disappears'. When I go back in and click on 'show desktop' it clears the taskbar. I can then easily access the buttons to move forward. Also when I am using PSE8 I have the same problem with accessing the buttons after I have completed my raw adjustments in the ACR window but it allows me to press the buttons with great difficulty if I can 'catch' the edge of the button and the ACR goes into PSE8 properly. I'm sorry that I have not explained myself well. At the present it looks as if the ACR window is too 'large' for the PSC5 window it 'sits upon'. It seems that it does not want to 'sit over' the taskbar. I have eventually fathomed that I can use Cntl and O to open the image (Open Image button) but this is not the least bit satisfactory. I don't know how I am going to access the other options eg 'done' and 'cancel' and 'save image'.

You're not addressing Apple here, this is a user to user support forum.
Basic troubleshooting from the User's Guide is reset, restart, restore (first from backup then as new). Has any of this been tried?

Last Paragraph line when using full justification stretches too much

One thing that really bothers me is the way that the last line of a paragraph will stretch out over the whole width of a page when you are using full justification, even when the line is only one or two words. This is simply unacceptable from an esthetic point of view. Does Pages 2 fix this annoying behavior—which really makes full justification practically unusable—or is that still broke?

I've run into this too, although only when pagination
occurs: i.e., you go to the next page. Haven't struck
it otherwise, and frankly had barely noticed it until
I changed to Pages 2. However it's still there. I
haven't struck it enough yet to find a workaround -
although you might try inserting your cursor in front
of a paragraph or line break - or checking invisibles
to see if you can spot what's going on when it
happens. Trouble is, before I get to that, the
problem's usually gone. To cheer you up a bit though,
it's a failing of other programs too, and I often
notice it in my local newspaper where it doesn't get
cleaned up at all!
But seriously, it's a bug and needs a fix. Be sure to
report it to Apple.
And if anyone's got a surefire trick for dealing with
it in the meantime, I'll be trying their answer too.
On the other hand, if it were something you could
live with through a method to avoid it - then why
isn't it in the help screens?

You told me what I did not want to know, which is that it is not fixed in Pages 2. It does not happen in some other WP that I have used, so it is very disapointing that Pages fails in this regard. Cheers!

Dual monitors: window size too large when opens in smaller monitor.

I use Windows 7 with two monitors. When I open Firefox directly from my desktop, it opens on the larger monitor, and the window size is just fine. But if I click a link from an email, Firefox opens in the second, smaller monitor, and the window is too large for that screen.
Please help me figure out how to either (a) make Firefox open with a smaller window; or (b) make Firefox open on the primary, larger monitor.

How to Increase Spacing between characters in textfield

Hi Guys,
I need some kind of solution. I have a textField which I am using to getPassword( I don't want to use JPassword Field) because of older JVM.
suppose TextField is 15 characters wide and number of charactes I want to allow is 5 so I want an "*" then 2 spaces.
Is there any way I can create Custom character( like "* ") or any function to increase spacing between two chars in jtextField.
following are two ideas I have
1. get a char and append multiple white spaces after each char
2. create another class with multiple textfield with spaces between each textfield.
If you guys have any other easy way around.
I would really appriciate your help.

Characters chopped off when using 'ps -ef'

Hello all:
When I monitor a java process, I use this commond:
ps -ef | grep MyJavaServiceit appears that MyJavaService has a long jar file list prepended as the classpath, the above command didn't show all the file names on the console - it's chopped in the middle.
Is there a limit of the numbers of the characters shown when using ps -ef | grep someProcess ?

# /usr/bin/getconf LINE_MAX
2048LINE_MAX: maximum number of characters that a utility can accept as an input line (either from the standard input or a text file) when the utility takes text files as input. This number includes the trailing newline.
Are you piping this through a pager such as less(1)? The ${LESS} environment variable can control whether long lines wrap or truncate.
What terminal emulator are you using? These can also be set to wrap or truncate long lines.

Qosmio X770-11C - how to disable on board speakers when using Line Out?

Hi,
Is there any way to disable on board speakers when the line out is used.
Currently if I plug in a cable to the hadphone socket and choose lineout on the realtek control panel, the sound is output to the line out as expected but also through the internal speakers.
Is there any way to stop this, and only have sound going out through the line out?

If you want to hear sound on headset only you must choose Headphone option.
Disconnect cable and connect it again. When you see small window on the screen where you can choose between headphone and line out options choose headphone and you will hear sound on external device only.
In case you have disabled this popup dialog you can activate it manually. Open Realtek manager connect external device and when you see activated black point on the right side make double click there and change settings.

Font too large when printing an incoming email

I want to change the font size when printing out mail in my inbox. The email font size is small and OK, but when I print the email, it's too large. How to I change this?

Being able to make the changes in safe mode leads me to believe one the the plug ins from the FF site is creating the issue...It's just way to large to move it so the bottom can be seen....Thanks for your attempt and time. :)
Oh..another thing. At times the top tabs are visible, and at other times, the bottom is visible.

Slide size too large when played via .htm file or in ELM

I have several modules that play perfectly fine from a computer or over the internet if you use the .swf file to launch them. The size of the slide automatically resizes to fit the launched browser window. However, if I try to open the file through the .htm file (as apparently our ELM does) the size of the slides is too large to fit within the browser window. Resizing the window doesn't help. With any module sized greater than 800 x 600, you cannot view the entire slide in the browser window. The bottom and right sides of the slide are cut completely off. Is there a fix for this, short of rescaling and redoing the entire module? The modules have been uploaded to our ELM, but the player controls are completely cut off by the restricted window size so you cannot advance the training.

I agree with BaseballBirch. The window size should be controllable in your Learning Management System or Content Management System (whatever your ELM is).
Most LMSs have the option to launch your content as a sub window of their player window, which has navigation links to enable users to launch each separate module. This option may mean that the user's overall screen resolution is insufficient to accommodate the entire interface. But LMSs usually also have another option that allows your Captivate content to be launched in a separate window. If so, this is usually the better way to go as it gives you more control over the size of the window.
One thing that LMSs differ in however is the way they calculate the size of this window. For some, you just enter the size of your Captivate movie stage and the LMS wraps the player window around these dimensions. In other LMSs you need to do some trial and error to work out what figures to enter into the LMS controls for height and width of the window because they include browser "chrome" and the dimensions of the window title bar and status bar. So you may have to add 50 or more pixels to height and 10 or more pixels to width to avoid cropping off your content.
You will need to use the HTM to launch the content. LInking to the SWF may cause some functionality in Captivate content to fail.

Compile error "input line is too long" when using useLegacyAOT

I'm using FlashBuilder 4.7 and the release of AIR 4 on Windows 7 to package for iOS...As soon as I include 3 or more ANEs I can no longer compile to iOS (and also use the new "useLegacyAOT no" command). When I try I get an error "The input line is too long. Compilation failed while executing : compile-abc"
I found a couple other similar issues. One post suggested instead of pointing to individual ANEs (in Package Contents) to point to a folder instead--but this doesn't fix the
Another post for a slightly different problem said it was fixed in the release of AIR 4.
Any ideas? I wonder if I move my AIR SDK to a simple path (like "c:\air\adt.jar" instead of "C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Flash Builder 4.7 (64 Bit)\eclipse\plugins\com.adobe.flash.compiler_4.7.0.349722\AIRSDK\lib\adt.jar") if it'd help.

MS Project Very Slow and Project Files Large when Using Shared Resource Pool

We are using MS Project 2010 Professional in our organization and using a shared resource pool so we can easily identify resource conflicts. When we started this process many months ago the resource pool worked great. Now that we have nearly
all of our projects (~40) using the resource pool, it has become essentially unusable. Each project file that is sharing the resource pool is 12 MB or greater in file size, and most of the project files contain less than 100 lines. Saving any file
takes ~4 minutes. As a result, many of the resource managers and project managers are starting to avoid using MS Project which is undermining our original intent.
Any thoughts on what we could try to regain the usability, make the file sizes smaller, improve save times, etc.? Will MS Project Server fix all of these issues?

If any of your PMs renamed, moved or over-wrote their project file whilst linked to the Resource Pool or a master, then the file may well have corrupted itself or the pool or both. With 40 files, you can guarantee one or more PMs will do one of the above,
so file corruption is a when, not if (2days or 2 years or more).
For 40 projects Project Server or any solution that copies data to a database so the resource data can be consolidated is needed. Project Server is not a simple application, it's a full server and requires proper training and processes to add value. And
it needs configuring by someone who knows what they're doing!
In the mean time try unattaching all project files from the pool, then create a new blank pool and re-attach.You will also need to File, Save as to repair each project file if needed. For bad corruption save as to a .xml format then re-import to a blank
project.
Or, create a new master each time by inserting all projects into a new blank project, but deselecting the Link option. All tasks are then copied and the resource data consolidated. Record a macro to make creating this very quick and easy (provided your network
isn't too slow).

[Solved]spacing between characters not correct on any termial emulator

Hi All,
I'm using Xfce on my laptop. The fonts don't look right in any of the terminal emulators. I've tried Xfce terminal, guake and terminator. Each one of them shows the same problem, sometimes the characters overlap and sometimes they are too far apart. You can have a look at the screenshot for xrandr output.

However, xterm looks just fine.
I'm currently using infinality-bundle fonts. However, the probem existed with the default fonts as well.

It was a silly mistake on my part. I tried to install 'infinality-bundle-fonts' package, but since it errored out, I just totally ignored the whole package.

Well, turns out that installing those individual fonts resolves the problem. Its a bit tedious installing individual fonts(there are around 40 options to choose from), but it does solve the spacing problem.
