Spam: Is this true?

I can't remember where I heard or read this but is the following true?
When you read spam notification is sent to the spammer that you have read the email and you then get bombarded by spam.
This has never really been a problem on Mail where the combination of ISP spam filtering and Mail Junk filtering deals with 99% of spam. I can Junk any unsolicited mail with the Junk button. But with Mail on my iPhone I can't seem to do anything with an email until I have actually read it. Seemed to me when I opened a few on my iPhone to Junk them that I suddenly got bomabarded with a whole set of similar spam.
But I also had preview on the iPhone until I worked out how to turn it off. So my *second question* is: does it also apply to email preview? I never activate email preview in my regular Mail accounts in case this is true.

Thanks both for the quick replies.
I gather from what you are saying that I should be OK with a few lines of email preview on the iPhone. But I guess the remaining clarification is this:
To Junk something on the iPhone I have to open the email. I can't do anything to an email without actually opening it first, right? So am I reading between the lines that opening an email won't confirm a valid address to a spammer unless there is content that needs to be loaded from a server? But I can't turn this option off on my iPhone. So if I need to open an email to Junk it, then opening it will potentialy load images from a server and that will confirm my existence to a spammer and increase the spam I receive.
The message has to be don't junk stuff on your iPhone. Right?
For info just in case anybody else needs it: I am using IMAP with server side spam filtering which captures a lot of spam but not all. I have as of today set my account to move spam to the junk mailbox before it comes to my inbox (I used to let Mail's Junk filter handle this but because of the iPhone then picking up all the spam I have changed the settings). I also always have the setting on Mail on my Macs turned on for disabling images.
