SPAN/RSPAN issues

Hi All,
I'm looking in to a problem regarding slow response to a file server, post implementation of RSPAN source changes.
SCENARIO
The LAN is a stack of 2/3 3750's on each floor, with a data Vlan per floor and a network wide voice Vlan 300. These access switches are gig fibre connected to two core switches, 6506's. Nortel IP handsets have been deployed and the voice Vlan 300 is being SPAN'ed to record to an IP voice recorder server. No problems there.
However, now there are Softphones deployed on various PC's and in order to facilitate staff relocation throughout the building, WITHOUT having to reconfigure any switch ports each time, the Data Vlan on each floor has also been specified as a source.
Having put additional config in to capture the data Vlan, there appears to be slow response when accessing a file server on a different Vlan. A ping -t that runs while copying a file to the Win 2003 file server actually drops and the copy hangs. If you try this again having either suspended the access switch RSPAN or shifting the file server to the other core switch, it seems to be OK and the difference in the ping response is very apparent
QUESTION
Has anyone come across any performance problems such as this and if so could you shed some light please?
Here's the config from only one of the floors:
DATA Vlan 112
VOICE Vlan 300
Remote SPAN dest Vlan 30
monitor session 1 source vlan 112 , 300
monitor session 1 destination remote vlan 30
Here's the config from the core switch where the voice recorder sits;
interface GigabitEthernet4/2
description *** SPAN destination for Witness CSS01 NIC 1 ***
no ip address
speed 100
duplex full
switchport
spanning-tree portfast
monitor session 1 destination interface Gi4/2
monitor session 1 source remote vlan 30
Kind Regards
Ali

Hello Ali,
I expirienced trouble with 3750 using 1000-BASE-SX and 1000-BASE-LH lasers that gave poor peformance with file transfers.
This was the case on switches that had MLS QoS enabled for IP phones.
The symptoms are described in bug toolkit CSCeg29704. There is a workaround. Upgrading to 12.2(25)SED or higher resolves the problem.
Release Notes
After enabling QOS on 3750 and 3560 switches, certain application (mostly bursty
and TCP based) experience significant performance degradation due to unexpected
packet drops on some of the egress queues.
This is due to initial default egress queue threshold settings
(when qos enabled) not optimized for this type of traffic pattern.
This initial default queue threshold settings (when qos enabled)
thus need to be changed to accommodate these traffic.
Workaround:
Tune the egress queue thresholds parameters to
allocate more to the affected queues.
Specifically, egress queue 2 thresholds need to have the following settings:
Thresholds1 = 200
Thresholds2 = 200
Reserved = 50
Maximum = 400
e.g.
mls qos queue-set output 1 threshold 2 200 200 50 400
mls qos queue-set output 2 threshold 2 200 200 50 400

  • 2950 spanning tree issue

Here is the problem we are having , we have a 2950 hooked to a 6509 hybrid dist box with approx 90 vlans on it . We hook up a new 2950 and we get the following message, Dec 21 19:47:45.116: %SPANTREE_VLAN_SW-2-MAX_INSTANCE: Platform limit of 64 STP instances exceeded. No instance created. Ok , I know about the spanning tree issues with the 2950 only having limited PVST instances . But up at the dist side we have "manually pruned off all but 5 vlans on the trunk feeding this 2950 with the "clear trunk" command . I thought manually pruning off the vlans from the trunk would eliminate this problem , maybe i have a misunderstanding of how this works. Also the message on the 2950 complains about it only having 64 instances of spanning tree yet when you do a "show vtp status it says it supports 250 instances locally so whats up with that , 2950 running 12.1.22EA4 . So I guess I'm asking is there any way around this for the 2950 . Also in client/server mode do you have to manually prune off the vlans on both the server side and the client side ??

    Hello Glen,
I guess instead of manually pruning the VLANs off the trunk, you could also try and enable VTP pruning globally on the 6509 (set vtp pruning enable). I assume you have the 6509 configured as the VTP server (set vtp mode server) ?
I am not sure if CatOS and IOS defaults to the same VTP version, can you check this (with 'show vtp domain' for CatOS and 'show vtp status' for the IOS switch) ?
Also, in a purely IOS environment, manually pruning VLANs off a trunk requires doing that only on the server side, but with a mix of CatOS and IOS, it might have to be done on both sides, you might want to give it a try and use the 'switchport trunk allowed' command on the 2950 as well...

  • SPAN RSPAN Monitoring Software

    Dear Experts,
Looking for SPAN/RSPAN like solarwind / Ciscoworks.
    Which can generate reports
    Manage Graphs
    Create Custom Reports
    Any good software please advice...

For SPAN/RSPAN/ERSPAN/NETFLOW and some similar traffic analysis and graphical represntation of such data is done using using Cisco' Hardware/Software - Network Analysis Module, aka, NAM.
However for SPAN/RSPAN and other feature you need to be selective on which NAM would suite you. You can check NAM Deployment guide to explore different NAM options.
For more details you can check :

  • UCCX 8.0(2) SPAN/RSPAN based VOIP Monitoring

    Hi Alll,
UCCX 8.0(2) High Availability (both servers are co-located in data center, where agents and supervisors are in building across the street over fibre)
SRND for UCCX 8 describes that it supports SPAN and/or RSPAN based voip monitoring, which is a requirement for my client as they have CAD Agents running on Citrix thin client and Supervisors on Thick client PCs.
However I am struggling to find a way to achieve this solution for my client with UCCX 8.x, UCCX 7 we would not have had this problem as you can configure 2nd NIC adaptor on UCCX server to be configured as VOIP Monitoring server port/IP under PostInstall and sniff all traffic for all Agent phone devices as configured under CDA.
Desktop Monitoring is not supported for thin client environment. Customer may eventually purchase QM/WFM, but for now we urgently require the essentials of agent monitoring on UCCX.
Please has anybody successfully had this configuration described above achieved? or have any ideas?
    Thank you,
    Yavuz

Have you been able to get a response to this post?  I am running into the exact same issue with an upgrade to UCCx 8.0.  SPAN on the 2nd NIC isn't allowed, and now the customer has lost functionality.
    Thanks,

    Hi Frank,
Thanks for your answer. Only been using ADF for a month now so a lot to be learned!
I am styling using CSS and skins (very confusing how ADF does this but thats another matter all together) but concerning my query on how to centrally vertical and horizontally align components within a button. How would I achieve this desired effect if the use of 2 span tags is not allowed/suggested in ADF. The af:outputText tag doesn't seem to implement span tags as I would have thought.
Any help would be very appreciated as searching the internet it would seem the use of the 2 classes on span tags is the best cross browser solution.

  • RSPAN issue

I have been unable to get RSPAN to work on 2 3550s connected together with an ISL trunk. I have a Sniffer on switch B, and a Windows PC on switch A. Unfortuneately, I found out the hard way that the reflector port takes the ISL trunk out of STP. When I configured and cabled a second trunk, I still cannot get any frames to copy to my Sniffer. I have configured this on 6500s with success, but not 3550s. Has anyone actually tested or used this with 3550s. Thanks in advance.

I have used RSPAN on 3550s with 802.1Q successfully.
Your reflector port should be a port that is not in use. It should not be cabled to anything, it is just a loopback port. Are you running VTP or did you manually configure the RSPAN VLAN on both switches?
If you are still having problems post your configs.

  • Sharepoint 2013 Excel External Data Source Refresh Issue

I have been facing this issue for quite some time now.. i have created an Excel sheet in Excel-13 and have imported data from an external data source [SQL server 2012].
Everything is working fine, with the excel sheet on the desktop. Data refreshes, every-time i open the excel file and also at regular intervals that i have configured in the data source properties.
The problem begins when i save that excel sheet on my sharepoint server. the issues that i am facing are :
    1. Changes made into the original data source, are not reflected immediately inside the excel sheet inside the browser. after 5-10 minutes, it reflects the changes..
    2. The data doesn't refreshes automatically. After i update my data inside the sql server table, i have to manually trigger the refresh of the data connection when viewing the excel sheet inside the browser, even though i have marked "Refresh when opening
the file", and refresh every 1 minute inside the excel sheet. Any solutions ??
I have been troubled a lot by this issue, and seek for some quick solution.. Any help here ??

I found the solution finally, my self ..
Issue - 1 : It's going to take atleat 5-minutes to refresh the data connection, that is generally not a big time span.
    Issue - 2 :
--> Set Your connection to refresh everytime the file is opened. go to internet explorer -> file -> internet options -> general -> Browsing History -> Settings -> Check for newer versions of stored pages... Check 'Every time I visit the
    webpage'.
Now everytime i update your original data source, wait for 5-10 minutes and refresh my web page containing the excel sheet.. The Contents of the excel sheet are updated as desired..

  • Spanned clips from my p2 card won't import fcp6

    hey shane
i am in fcp6 and having the spanned clip issue. i have a spanned clip that won't import into fcp6. i used p2cms to offload so i do not have the lastfile.txt but could you walk me thru how to import these 4 or 5 spanned clips?

As long as you have all the card dump folders loaded into the Log and Transfer window, FCP will stitch together spanned clips. So if your clip goes from one card to another, load both cards into L&T, then import.

  • Spanning tree loops

Hi we are having regular spanning tree issues in our network.
On our config we do not have bpduguard configured from what I can see? Could this be an issue?
What can be done centrally on the core switches to remove this threat? Are their default configs that a wise network administrator would apply as standard?
    HELP!

HI Mike [Pls Rate if HELPS]
Refer link below for examples and identify redundant links, root and backup root bridge etc..
    http://www.cisco.com/en/US/tech/tk389/tk621/technologies_tech_note09186a0080136673.shtml#intro
Refer link for usage guidelines in implementing loopguard, bpdu guard etc..
    http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/switches/lan/catalyst4000/7.4/configuration/guide/stp_enha.html#wp1019943
A Cisco router will give you a warning when you configure PortFast:
    SW1(config)#int fast 0/5
    SW1(config-if)#spanning-tree portfast
%Warning: portfast should only be enabled on ports connected to a single host. Connecting hubs, concentrators, switches, bridges, etc... to this interface when portfast is enabled, can cause temporary bridging loops. Use with CAUTION
%Portfast has been configured on FastEthernet0/5 but will only
have effect when the interface is in a non-trunking mode.
    SW1(config-if)#
Not only will the switch warn you about the proper usage of PortFast, but you must put the port into access mode before PortFast will take effect.
But there is a chance - just a chance - that someone is going to manage to connect a switch to a port running Portfast. That could lead to two major problems, the first being the formation of a switching loop. Remember, the reason we have listening and learning modes is to help prevent switching loops. The next problem is that there could be a new root bridge elected - and it could be a switch that isn't even in your network!
BPDU Guard protects against this disastrous possibility. If any BPDU comes in on a port that's running BPDU Guard, the port will be shut down and placed into error disabled state, shown on the switch as err-disabled. A port placed in err-disabled state must be reopened manually.
BPDU Guard is off on all ports by default, and is enabled as shown here:
    SW1(config)#int fast 0/5
    SW1(config-if)#spanning-tree bpduguard enable
It's a good idea to enable BPDU Guard on any port you're running PortFast on. There's no cost in overhead, and it does prevent the possibility of a switch sending BPDUs into a port configured with PortFast - not to mention the possibility of a switch not under your control becoming a root switch to your network!

  • SPAN port question

    Hi,
I have two core switches 6500 and Access switches 4500. Both chassis. I need to span ports, but this ports are not in a vlan. I know that there is a limit to span ports that are not in a vlan. Does anyone know which is the limit? Is there a way to make all of them to span?
    Thanks!

    Hi Pablo
As a forum focused on technical documentation, we checked to see if there was a doc that might answer your question.
There is not enough information in your question to for us to pinpoint exactly what you need, but have you looked at, for example, “Configuring SPAN, RSPAN, and ERSPAN” for the Catalyst 6500 (IOS 12.2SX)”?
If this doesn’t help, we’ll refer your question to the appropriate tech support community. They will probably find it helpful to know what operating system (CatOS or IOS) and which release you have, since this determines what SPAN features and restrictions are in effect.
    Thanks for posting,
    Hilde

  • Spanning tree Stability

    Folks,
I have recently placed 2 6500 at the core. I am running PVST. I have made one switch as the root primary and the other one is root secondary. My question is what steps can i take to make sure no spanning tree issues arise if some by mistake introduces a switch to the network??? i know i can use the root guard command per interface, but, i was looking for other best practices.
Also, can someone exlain to me how can i switch modify the spanning tree topology if i have already configured a root bridge with a priority of 1?
I will surely rate this post.
    Thanks

Well, you can set the priority to 0;-)
Except rootguard you mentioned, there is no real way of preventing someone else to become root because even if you set your root priority to 0, a bridge with a lower mac address could beat you.
STP still assume some kind of cooperation between the switches. If you are in an environment where you absolutely cannot trust the neighbors, you should try avoiding running STP with them. Rootguard is a good safeguard but it will disrupt connectivity when a violation is detected. Plus rootguard will fail to detect problems if the neighbor is hostile and not sending BPDUs at all (bpdufilter).
If you are operating in a kind of service provider model, you could use l2pt instead (waiting for 802.1ad). In that case, you would just run STP with the bridges you control and trust, and let others tunnel their STPs through you (note that in this case, the untrusted devices can create bridging loops through you, but you can rate limit the bandwidth they are wasting to what they pay for).
    Regards,
    Francois

  • Mutiple spanning-tree root bridges

We've started installing some new 3650 switches (replacing 3560's at the access layer) running XE 03.03.05SE. We've run into some problems as a result of "ip device tracking" being on by default, but in the process of debugging I've found that three separate switches all believe they are the spanning-tree root bridge for the same VLANs. The new switches are by default in rapid-pvst mode; the distribution switches are set to rapid-pvst as well. All 3650's are dual-homed.

Switch 1 seems to behave as if it is the real root, but this still does not make much sense to me. Does anyone have an explanation? It's been a long time since my switching class, and I very seldom have to deal with spanning-tree issues.

    Hi,
Having more than one root switch for a VLAN is definitely a sign of some foul play. A contiguous VLAN can never have more than one root switch. Multiple root switches would occur if, for example, the trunks interconnecting the switches had this VLAN excluded from the list of allowed VLANs, or if they were interconnected by access ports (in a different VLAN) rather than trunks. Another possibility could be an inappropriately constructed MAC ACL or VLAN ACL inadvertently block BPDUs. In any case, this may be a source of serious trouble.
Without further information about your network, it is difficult to suggest anything more specific. Would it be possible to post a diagram explaining your network topology? Also, would it be possible to post the show span root and show span bridge outputs from every switch in your network?
    Thank you!
    Best regards,
    Peter
