Speaking of HTML5-

So I finally got around to updating my site to be fully functional on mobile devices (out with Flash and in with HTML5, sort of).
My site formerly relied on Flash for creating audio players (mainly), but these obviously don't work on the growing segment of mobile devices. That's why I decided to rewrite the site and call the audio element of HTML5. For unsupported browsers I provide fallback on Flash. Works.
But, there are a few quirks that I can't get around. For one, the audio players all seem to preload the entire audio track (.ogg or .mp3, depending on which browser), even though I nowhere call the autobuffer. One of my pages has fourteen players on it, so you can imagine that the loading of that page is considerably long. Is there a way to force the players not to load until the play function is called (much like standard in the mobile devices)?
http://jmsuijkerbuijk.com/Audio_Samples.html
Another quirk is the lack of control over the looks. The player looks different in just about every browser and in some browsers (guess which one: IE!) the old Flash player is used. Even the size of the player is different in browsers. Safari is satisfied with a minimum of 200x25 pixels (fair looking player); the minimum for Firefox is 300x40 pixels (downright ugly player). Obviously that (look and size) is disastrous for any design. I know there is some control over appearance through CSS, but Apple's example (http://developer.apple.com/safari/library/samplecode/HTML5VideoPlayer/index.html) doesn't really offer much hope for what I wished for. Does anyone have valuable tips on this?
As always: thanks in advance!

Due mostly to lack of time I haven't been able to dig very deep yet.
Very soon, though, it became apparent that a solution had to be found for the discrepancy of native players. The Safari player is quite nice and is satisfied with a fairly small 200 x 20 pixels; the Chrome player is higher than 20 pixels, but the Firefox player needs a whopping 100 pixels in height (go figure!) to be fully viewable and functional. A region of at least 200 x 100 pixels per player is quite radical for any design. Worse is, that the native players place themselves at the bottom of that 200 x 100 pixels, whereas the substituting Flash player is drawn at the top of that region. Unacceptable.
I needed a visual wrapper which would preferably be consistent between methods, browsers and OS's. I did find that in the jPlayer which is fairly easy to configure through CSS. Works great in all browsers without autobuffering, playing audio natively (ogg or mp3) and falling back on Flash in browsers that don't support HTML5. Sorry to say that playback is probably worst in Safari (ouch!), because it takes longer to load the audio file than any other browser, if it will load at all.
Only downside is, that the player does not work in Safari for mobile devices. Bit of a bummer, because that was the very reason why I sought to use HTML5 in the first place.
Hope to find more time soon and will dig deeper.

  • Puzzler - Is there a way to detect when an external headphone or speaker is plugged in?

I have a puzzler, and my initial question is simply, is there a way to see via Windows if/when an external headphone or microphone is plugged in, or is that all an electrical circuit independent of the OS?
Background: (not necessarily the question I'm asking, but providing anyway):
The background is this:  Dozens, Hundreds, I think Thousands of owners of Toshiba Satellite owners with Conexant sound devices (including myself) the world over have this problem where the sound stops working about 1 to 2 minutes into playing non-stop
sounds/music/videos.  In spite of all the experts telling these poor people to run a system restore and wipe out the past years of files and everything on their computer, the problem prevails no matter what.  Some have even installed Linux, and the
problem persists. To me, it seems that the problem doesn't occur if the only sounds are the occasional bing or bong from a system warning, it seems to fail after 1 to 2 minutes of continuous play (but this particular observation is mine only, nobody else has
taken the time to point that out).
A few have claimed success via blowing the jacks out with compressed air, but that's not repeatable universally.  Most people end up keeping external speakers plugged in permanently. In other words, it seems a lot like a hardware problem; However,
{edit 3}, my addition of "Edit 2" below makes it seem less like hardware.
One interesting thing:  Headphones/speakers work permanently, there's no problem.  More curiously, when the sound goes out, plugging any form of headphone/microphone jack into
    EITHER the headphone
OR the microphone jack turns the sound back on too.  This includes male-to-male extension cable with nothing installed.  If nothing is on the other end, the sound will go out
again shortly, but jiggling or removing the male to male turns it back on.
EDIT 2: When the sound goes out, another way to get it back: From system tray, right click the speaker item and choose SOUNDS.  The virtual VU meter shows that audio is playing (in tandem with the song, etc.), and is still showing audio
playing.  The tabs available are Playback, Recording, Sounds, and Communications.  When the sound does stop (assuming I was watching Playback), I click the Recording tab (just the tab header), and sound starts again.
P.S. What's the difference between "High Definition Audio Controller" under System Devices, and "Conexant SmartAudio HD" under "Sound, Video, and Game Controllers", in Device Manager?  The "conexant smartaudio hd"
points to the latest Conexant driver, the "High Definition Audio Controller" points to a default windows driver.  Just curious
I've Binged this extensively:  Toshiba doesn't acknowledge the problem and nobody has fully solved the issue. I'm just curiously trying a few things myself, and I'm not sure if there's a way for the system to tell me an external mic/speaker has been
    plugged in.
So to recap:  My main question, can I detect when the computer thinks a headphone or microphone is plugged in? (My theory, if I can prove that the computer THINKS something is plugged in, it's a start).
    Only secondarily, if anyone's interested, feel free to suggest ideas (here's what dozens of other posts have disproven: System restore; windows reinstall; outdated sound driver; outdated video driver; remove and re-detect sound and device via device manager;
malware; BIOS upgrade; Flash and/or the Flash/Firefox/Hardware Acceleration issue (problem happens with MP3, Flash, WMA, HTML5, Games, everything).
    Thanks in advance!
EDIT: One person (theirs was under warranty, mine's not) ended up getting a new motherboard & speaker via Toshiba warranty, diagnosis ""machine intermittent no sound due to PCB faulty".  I'm still interested in troubleshooting,
    though.  Link:
One lucky person, who got their motherboard replaced (they were under warranty, most of us aren't)

    Hi,
If there are any headphone or speaker plugged in and detected, it will show in audio device manager console.
Type mmsys.cpl in Run, it will open Sound console.
Have you tried Hardware and Sound troubleshooter?

No, I use ALSA, not pulseaudio. Two of that files is a try to fix everything up. I use this configuration because I have

But HDMI appears not to work (no controls in alsa mixer -S/PDIFs only, no sound via aplay/speaker-test), so I use PCH instead. And everything works but HTML5 sounds in FF

  • Has anyone else managed to speak to a human being in the App Review team

I have had my app rejected twice on the basis that they think all the functionality can be incorporated in an epub format even though the epub format explicitly can't support what my app does. But every time I try and contact the team, it is only allowed via email (with very long waits for responses) and I just a standard script response, e.g
"2.21: Apps that are simply a song or movie should be submitted to the iTunes store. Apps that are simply a book should be submitted to the iBookstore".
Even when I appealed I just got the same script back and I keep being told that I can't talk to a human being.
Has anyone actually managed to speak to a member of staff in the App Review Team and could you give me some advice as to how I can do this. The process has been dragging on and all I need is a 10-minute discussion with a human being,
    Thanks,
    Dave

    Thanks KT.
I did get a phone call after a few days and it did end up as a useful conversation.
I do think though that there should be contact numbers so that developers can actually ring a named individual in the App Review Team. I was really surprised that the Apple switchboard said that they were unable to connect incoming callers to specific teams or members of staff. As a Customer Service experience it seems pretty poor.
Anyway, the member of staff in the Review Team was helpful and we are making some of the suggested changes and resubmitting the App.
In terms of ePub functionality, it actually can't do everything the App can do as there is no way within an ePub of changing navigation based on whether you are using an iPhone or iPad. There are a lot of things you can do (in fact you can build an HTML5 app within an ePub if you want) but whether an ePub format is appropriate for all the things you can do is another matter. That is a discussion for another day ...

  • Why does DW6 fluid grids not use HTML5 tags?

Correct me if I'm wrong, but it appears that DW6 only allows divs to be inserted when building fluid grids via the interface. If your doctype is set as HTML5, wouldn't it be nice if you were prompted as to whether you wanted a div, header, nav, section, aside, or footer, etc.? The way it is now, if you want your code to be HTML5 semantic, you will have to go into both your HTML and CSS afterwards and make a bunch of manual changes.
Or am I missing something that I have not seen in any of the tutorials I have read and watched?
    Thanks!
    James

I can't speak for Adobe.  But my guess is because HTML5 is still a working draft. The contents of HTML5 are still being discussed on the HTML Working Group and WHATWG mailing lists.

  • Audio not working on one slide when publishing to HTML5

I'm in Captivate 8. In one slide in my project no slide audio will play when published to html5. I've tested in Chrome and IE 11. In Chrome, I see the 'speaker' icon that appears when audio or video is running but no sound comes up. (The speaker appears for the length of the audio file ~5 sec) All other slides are fine, and the slide audio plays correctly if I use F3 or F10 to preview the slide inside Captivate.
The slide in question is a 'menu' only reached via an advanced action. I know the advanced action is not the culprit - if I change it to jump to a different slide, the audio on that slide plays without problem.
Similarly, I've verified that if I place this audio file on a different slide, it plays fine, but if I add a different audio file to this slide the problem remains. If I create a button on the problem slide to trigger the audio it plays, (but is unhelpful since I want the audio to play automatically when the user enters the slide).
I've tried removing/re-adding the audio, recreating the slide from a copy, setting the audio to play via an "on enter" advanced action, and adding a play trigger to the advanced action that jumps to this slide. Nothing I've tried gets the audio to play.
I'd welcome any suggestions of what might be happening or how to fix this.
    Thank you,
    Jenny Nilsson

    Hi Lieve,
Thank you, yes, if I view using f12 the audio works correctly.
The "exitBranch" action is associated with a continue button at the end of each branch. If all branches have been visited, it jumps to a new slide, if there are unvisited branches, it jumps back to the menu slide where the audio is not working. (If I edit the action to jump somewhere else the audio will work for the different slide.)
The action was created from a shared action and my colleague and I have used it in multiple other modules without this error.
    Thanks,
    Jenny N

  • Is there any plan to create a HTML5 shell for flash player apps & interactive elements?

Is there any plan to create a HTML5 shell for flash player apps and elements? The canvas option is very limited and many apps & old, interactive flash elements no longer work on most mobile devices.

HTML5 is the "anti-flash", so to speak. It requires no plug-ins. HTML5 is MP4 which is QuickTime video. That's the "shell" for it.
Steve Jobs said in 2006, when iOS was first released, that "playing Flash content is processor consumptive and drains batteries in mobile devices, reducing their life." That's why Apple iOS devices have never been compatible with Flash, and also why Android dropped support for the technology in June of 2012.
Android has "Dolphin" and "Puffin" browsers, which render Flash content (video and animations) "server side" to reduce the load on mobile devices running Android. Likewise, Apple has "SkyFire" which works the same way, but is designed specifically for iOS.

  • Html5 vs SAP UI5

    Dear All,
SAP UI5 is pretty new but the technology has grown at a high pace.
My question is what are the reasons that still the development are done in HTML5 .
Bottom-line being,  where does HTML5 still has an upper hand than SAP UI5.
And where are the things still to be enhanced in UI5 technology especiaaly when we speak for standard desktop application.
    Regards,
    Puja

    Hi Puja,
it's not UI5 vs HTML5. It is always both: UI5 uses HTML5. It is just a very comprehensive toolset on top which adds functionality.
You can compare it to the question: "What is better to build a house: bricks and concrete? Or scaffolds, cranes and hydraulic shovels?"
In the end it is always bricks and concrete, the question is what are the tools to compose them.
So to answer your question: when you want to build feature-rich applications with lots of data interaction and logic, you'd use UI5 as tool to create the HTML page.
If you just want to put some blocks of static texts on a web page, you would use plain HTML without the additional tools that UI5 offers.
    Regards
    Andreas

  • Mono audio playing from left speaker only

For websites who have mono recorded (single channel) podcasts, audio in firefox will only play from left speaker instead of picking center channel.
If audio is downloaded and played on seprate dedicated player it defaults to center or if same site is played in IE also defaults to center.
Stereo recorded podcasts have no issue.

I assume that not a Flash player is used in this case, but that this is an issue with the (built-in) HTML5 media player and the audio tag is used.
    Is that correct?
The Flash player should show the Flash context menu if you right-click the player area.

  • HTML5 video un-mute button?

It's easy to insert HTML5 video on a Web page with Dreamweaver CS6/CC, and it is easy to mute that video. Just click the "muted" button in the properties panel.
    The code goes from:
    <video preload="auto" controls loop >
                <source src="ShutterSpeed640.mp4" type="video/mp4">
            </video>
    To:
    <video preload="auto" controls muted loop >
                <source src="ShutterSpeed640.mp4" type="video/mp4">
            </video>
But what I would like to do is have the page load muted, then have a way for the viewer to un-mute the video.
I've been poking around the forum & tutorials & haven't found an answer. Could anyone set me on the right path?
I'm not a whiz at coding, I just poke around at it when something is not working in Design View, and over the years end up backing into a little knowledge. Maybe just enough to make me dangerous . . . to myself.
    Thanks,
    JAF

    Um . . . yeah.
I so often have a tendency to look for complicated solutions when the answer is right in front of my face.
With the muted option clicked the window opens muted, then the viewer can click the speaker button on the playbar to unmute it. All I have to do is include a little text to inform the viewer of that possibility.
    Thanks, John.

  • Want to use Apple TV to serve existing 4 room wired speaker installation

I purchased a home with existing 4 room speaker system.  All wires terminate in basement where previous owner had some type of media control center.  Each speaker zone has control for volume in the various rooms.
My goal is to reconnect the speakers and use my Apple TV (previous generation) as my music source.  I want to keep this as simple and cheap as possible.
I am assuming I will need an Amp/receiver and a multi-speaker splitter to plug all the speaker wires into.  I know I can use the Apple Remote app on my IPhone to control it remotely.
What I would like to hear about from the community is
    1. opinions on this set up.  Is there an easier or simpler way to drive and control the speaker?
    2. if this arrangment makes sense, has anyone done this and what equipment works best?
    Thanks

If you have zoned volume control (ie control for each room) your simplest set up would be to join all four sets of speaker cables into a single output from an amp/receiver, you would need to turn the volume to zero in rooms where you didn't want audio but you will need to judge for yourself whether that is convenient for you or not.
Your other option is to use an amp with at least 4 separately controlled outputs or a multiplexer, this would be controlled from one central point and so would allow you to turn rooms off without actually visiting them.

  • HT2534 I am from the U.S, now currently in the Czech Republic. Just bought an iphone with vodafone. I can't get past the account setting on itunes, etc...either way, How do I get ENGLISH SPEAKING HELP instead of being redirected to the Czech Language stor

I am somewhat new to apple products. I am from the U.S. and currently studying in the Czech Republic.
I have an itouch with an apple ID, but lately I can't get it to charge or work. After pluggin the usb recharge cable to the computer at my universities facility, it gives a black page with a picture of the cable and the arrow pointing to itunes logo. The school's computer labs don't have i tunes or anything like that.
I also just got an iphone 4S and have been trying to set up and i can't seem to complete the process for the itunes so i can install the apps i had in the itouch and also to get new apps. It stops me and says to contact the itunes for support right after the input of address and phone number information, etc...
The purchase was made in the czech republic from a vodafone store, but if i remember right i configured it to US settings so I don't have to deal so much with everything showing up in Czech.
I tried getting help by going to the support, but after putting in my  name, email, phone number for scheduling a call with them it rejects the phone number because i am putting in my czech phone number. Putting in my previous US number would be useless because I am not in the US and that number is probably inactive.
I would to get some English speaking support while being here in the czech republic.
    Any advice?

If you are completely confident that you didn't hide it, then you purchased those with different apple id. If you completely confident that you purchases with same apple id then you have hidden it. One of the other or you are speaking about a miracle. While miracles are possible they are not very likely. • Headphones no longer work after being plugged into speaker

Hi i purchased a ipod touch 5th generation 32 gb bundle from target just over a week ago which came with the iCoustic 20 in 1 Accessory kit Model No : IC184. After plugging the ipod into the supplied speaker this morning trying to listen to music it kept making stacic like noises and changing volume it was alwful to try and listen so gave up and went back to taking it off speaker and playing it back through apple headphones but now after being plugged into the speaker the headphones wont work its just a buzzing sound if you turn the volume up all the way loud the music will come back through headphones then when turning it down it cuts out again or if you manage to get the music it will stop after a couple of seconds. I have done a factory reset but it has made no difference. Please help have a very upset daughter it is frustrating do we take this back for a refund and get a new one if so how do we keep the music and photos etc she has on this one? Thankyou.

    - Try cleaning out/blowing out the headphone jack. Try inserting/removing the plug a dozen times or so.
Try the following to rule out a software problem
    - Check also Settings > General > Accessibility > Hearing. Make sure that the sound balance is not set all the way to "R".
    - Reset the iPod. Nothing will be lost
Reset iPod touch: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Reset all settings
Go to Settings > General > Reset and tap Reset All Settings.
All your preferences and settings are reset. Information (such as contacts and calendars) and media (such as songs and videos) aren’t affected.
    - Restore from backup
    - Restore to factory settings/new iPod.
    - Make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store. Seems you have a bad headphone jack.
