Speed Kde4 (_mod) / Gnome

Hello.
As a relatively new archlinux user, I want some comparisons between gnome and kde.
Are there any indications about KDE4 (or kdemod) is slightly faster than gnome?  thinking primarily of the overall response time, and a comparison of resource usage between KWin and Compiz.
Anyone?

3ner wrote:If you care about speed, neither kde nor gnome are the top choice. If you are looking for a full bloated DE, speed is not a good argument to decide between gnome or kde.
Just install both, use both for a week each, and decide for the one you like more. Since speed in average pc usage is highly subjective anyways, even go this route if you want to go for the "faster" one.
I agree 100%. The differences between GNOME and KDE will really be personal taste differences. Judging between the two while looking for speed is a folly as both are giants.
However, I must point out that you can set up either one to be more responsive. WHile I am not certain on how to do so under GNOME, in KDE, for example, you can preload instances of your favorite apps. This will cause the initial loading of the desktop to take longer, however it will also cause the applications to start up faster. So if you don't plan on logging out or restarting often, then that would buy you some time.
The question you need to ask yourself is which one feels better to you. Do you like the over all look and feel of gnome and gtk based apps, or of kde and qt apps. While you can use either apps in either DE, it IMO doesn't make much sense to use KDE and use nothing but GTK apps. So, do like 3ner suggested. Install and try both for a while. You can always delete one when you are done.

  • Some questions on Labview under KDE4 and GNOME

I have some questions regarding KDE4 an GNOME with Labview for Linux. I'm trying to help a colleague get somethings working with regards to these desktop environments.
    1. KDE4: When I try to open a VI directly through Dolphin (the default file manager under KDE4)..and the file (lets say ABCD.VI) is located in say /home/user/Test VI/ABCD.vi. When I double click, Labview starts and says that "/home/user/Test" is not a valid VI and it just errors out and refuses to open. It refuses to honor any whitespaces under KDE4 is what I've noticed. I haven't noticed this under KDE3.
    2. GNOME: There are no icons for .vi files after installation, even though the desktop support for GNOME is installed during the install process.
     Would appreciate some help!

    Hi Anshul,
What version of Mandriva do you see this in?  We only official test for and support a couple distributions (SUSE is only supported up to 10.3): http://digital.ni.com/public.nsf/websearch/35D2B5E483A001A18625716B005BE464?OpenDocument

  • KDE vs Gnome

Which one is better to use with Arch? I've always used Gnome but I was just wondering what everyone's opinion is on which one works best with Arch.

well,I am a Gnome user for years.but,in Archlinux, after hearing about kdemod,I installed kdemod and it is working perfectly.
although kde-3.5.9 is what is available(stable).
will have to wait for kde-4.2.x something to experience kde4
regarding Gnome in archlinux,I have to try that! still kdemod works perfectly!
also, anyways whatever Desktop Environment u install, even kde,u cannot dispense with gtk2+ libraries (I like kde for amaroK though, dont like the huge customization options and strict binding of kdelibs+qt apps only)

  • Wayland (+Gnome 3.14) mouse speed/acceleration

    Good evening dear archlinux community!
Just recently I updated to gnome 3.14 and started using it with wayland. So far it runs pretty smooth and stable, which is nice, but I got issues with mouse speed and/or acceleration.
I'm using a pretty old Razer Deathadder (the 1800dpi version) and razercfg (more precisely razerd) to set its dpi to 900.
Back in gnome 3.12 it worked just perfect if I set the mouse speed to the middle and disabled acceration. It felt like the "raw input"-like speed from windows.
But now razercfg doesn't seem to work with wayland, which is understandable, but f*cks up my muscle-memory.
(By the way: having razerd enabled while running gnome on wayland makes wayland crash at the moment razerd tries to switch dpi. So the mouse runs at 1800 dpi)
    tl;dr
So my question is: is there any way to force a kind of "raw input" on my mouse speed on gnome+wayland? Like disabling or bypassing the gnome mouse settings or reducing mouse dpi in wayland?
Setting the mouse speed to the lowest doesn't do the trick. It still feels too fast or accelerated.
    Have a nice weekend
    /edit
If it isn't possible I'm open for suggestions for a new mouse. Requisites are: perfect Linux support, manual dpi-switching, good ergonomy for quite large hands, 4+ Buttons, 80€ max. And please no Logitech mice...

Finally, I am running gnome 3.14 with waland on my btrfs-ssd-pimped laptop. Quite cute.
The major issue is the touchpad's speed. It is so nervous. Acceleration is ... massive. Sensitivity of clicks is nearly unusable. It seems as thinking"will click soon" already is a click. I tried to tweak the touchpad settings in gnome-settings, but tumbled into the dialog and accidentally turned the touchpad off.
I found out there is no option for acceleration and sensitivity.
    I read about wayland/gnome-settings-daemon:
Launches mousetweaks and gsd-locate-pointer as required and applies settings to input devices (mouse and touchpad). Under Wayland, the mouse accessibility features and the locate pointer need to be implemented in the compositor, and the settings naturally belong there as well.
And about wayland/libinput touchpad speed settings
The code we currently have in libinput is pretty much 1:1 what's used in the X server. The X server sports a lot more configuration options, but what we have in libinput 0.4.0 is essentially what the default acceleration settings are in X. Armed with the knowledge that any #define is a potential knob for configuration I went to investigate. There are two defines that are labelled as adjustible parameters:
        DEFAULT_THRESHOLD, set to 0.4
        DEFAULT_ACCELERATION, set to 2.0
But what do they mean, exactly? And what exactly does a value of 0.4 represent?
Right now, I guess one needs to change the paramters in the code of libinput.

  • Coexistence of KDE4.3 and Gnome 2.28

    Hello,
I've tried KDE4 and liked it because of its looks. It pleases the eye. However I find dolphin very bogus and slow compared to nautilus. I've always used gnome as my desktop environment.
My linux experience is low-medium and I mostly follow the wiki pages as a cake recipe, not doing much out of its  scope, unless it fails, than it is a whole different story.
I want to have both desktop environments installed in my arch linux box and I'm afraid I'll break the installation if I do so by following the wiki pages only.
From your more advanced experience, although I know it is totally possible to do that, is there anything I should worry about before I issue a pacman -Sy gnome gnome-extra gnome-system tools? Or I should just expect full and happy coexistence from both?
    Please share!

I have a nice desktop hardware where I have arch linux installed on. I don't believe openbox or tiling wm projects are a way to go when people are looking for eye candy, but perhaps they're good for some target hardwares. Also, I'm not sure about the supported software. It is pointless to have openbox if I need qt4 and gtk installed to run my apps. Same to tiling wm. Reason which I'm not looking forward to installing and learning another bunch of new stuff...
Forgive me if I'm being too stupid on the subject.
I have Dwm as my main window manager, and i like to mount the disk and others things manually. No because the openbox doesn't automount the devices, but i like in that way. I see that you have a functional (automount ,etc) DE, well, lately i have problems in gnome to automount devices i think because an update i made. It is only my case, i don't know the rest. The trully thing is that you should not have a problem if install gnome and kde together.

  • What do you use to make Gnome apps look good in KDE4?

What are you all using to make Gnome apps (like Firefox, Gimp, Inkscape.. etc) look good in KDE (I am using KDEmod).
I tried Qtcurve (I think it works the best), gtk-qt-engine (for some reason it didn't seem to work for me) and others...
I want to hear opinion from other people (who use KDE or possibly KDEmod) and who are probably using Arch longer than me. This is my first successful Arch install.

  • What's new in kde4.4?

As a long time kde user I was bewildered by some of the things that hit me when I fired up kde4.4.
To kick the changes off I was impressed by the new netbook setup which one call up seemlessly and which relies on the new search and launch activity:
systemsettings - desktop - workspace - form factor: netbook
But there are plenty of other things that I have seen in this forum but have no idea how to implement yet - among them tabbing applications! So, if you have found something cool, tell us how to do it and post a screenshot (best use http://omploader.org/)

Usability - love it. Nothing better than KDE. I've really missed the immense configurability and it looks like there is more to play with and make good use of in 4.4 than ever. Dolphin remains my favourite filemanager. It does everything better. Akonadi looks more usable now too. I really like the opposite philosophy they've taken to cloud computing and taking activities that are in the cloud and integrating it into the DE. Thumbs up for the social desktop.
Polish - The best. So many cool details woven into the DE since the early days of 4.1. I also love the developments made on bespin since I last updated it (stopped doing that when kde-base became a dependency and I wasn't using it), new icon sets from kde-look are amazing and that's besides the fact that I really like what they've done with the default oxygen-air setup. A thing of beauty. Think it can win over a lot of non-linux users to look at a kde box, even without modification.
Stability - I am not impressed. Two random dolphin crashes, okular crashed, krunner stopped working when I activated desktop effects and chromium simply disappeared from the menu after I added the launcher to the panel. All this in the first hour. Still these are details I imagine will be ironed out with the next bugfix release.
Speed - This is where I am the big loser. I've grown accustomed to the near instant responsiveness of my xfce+compiz setup by now and I think I will just have to come to terms with the fact that KDE is not designed for proper use with a 1.73 Ghz celeron processor as my laptop has.
By now, I'm afraid responsiveness is a stronger feature for me than the aforemented. I will toy with it a bit more before going back to the poorer world of gtk, but I do wish it could be more responsive. Last time I tried Gnome, it fared quite a bit better in this department and if they had been evenly matched, I think the plusses might outweigh the lag for me to stay put (I realise curit would be nice if they had been more evebrent gnome can not compete with the features of kde 4, but still).
Still, I genuinely do believe that KDE 4 is currently the most advanced and shiny DE out there on any platform. If I had a more powerful machine I would use it without question. It seems to be getting better and better.

  • Kde4.2+xorg 1.6,memory problem

I use kde 4.2.2 and xorg 1.6.My notebook has nvidia Geforce 8400M GS with the latest beta driver.

  • (Ex)gnomer's mini review (but long story:))of KDE 4.2

    Hello all,
I've been a long time an Ubuntu user, and very happy with Gnome. I always considered KDE too bloated so I was feeling right at home with Ubuntu and Gnome. Because Gnome looks "flatter" I was thinking that it "should" be lighter than KDE. Well, I was wrong. I don't know what the KDE devs did, but KDE4 is faster and lighter than Gnome, although it is much "richer".
My story starts some 10 days ago, when I decided to solve my laptop's battery life problem. With Ubuntu 8.10, battery lasted only 4-4.30 hours, while it should last at least 5 hours (this was the average battery life under Vista when I first got my laptop some 8 months ago - needless to say, Vista went to the trash 2 weeks later). So I started once again the usual distro search and decided to give KDE4 a shot. So there I was dual-booting with Kubuntu 8.10. To make a long story short, battery life returned to its usual performance and I was very impressed with KDE4.1. But (K)Ubuntu's customizations - why on earth do I have to install so many gnome libs just to get Firefox through the official repos?? - and the 6 month cycle policy made me consider again of Arch.
I tried Arch some months ago and I was very excited because it is exactly what I want: a very fast, customizable, rolling release, cutting-edge but stable distro. But I couldn't get fonts to render nicely under Gnome, no matter what I tried (arch's wiki, ubuntu patches, etc), and since I work with text more than 8 hours per day I can't make any compromises with fonts. Anyways, few days ago I was back in Arch and KDE4.1. Battery life improved even more (5.30-6 hours ), font rendering was just nice, and speed was stellar. Bugs were there, but I was hoping 4.2 would correct them. And I was perfectly right!
A few hours ago I updated my arch to KDE4.2 through pacman (btw, amazing package manager!) and I was shocked when I logged in for first time. IMHO, the release number could have been easily 4.5 and not 4.2. Font rendering and antialiasing is perfect with default settings, major bugs are no longer there (dolphin's inability to connect in samba shares with utf8 file names, trashy notification area, just to name a couple), and kwin received so many additions that can match compiz. Note that I want visual effects because they improve my productivity. I can no longer live without cube rotation, exposing all windows with a mouse movement, tranferring windows among desktops, etc. And kwin has them all now. Also, some sound problems I had when I was logging in got ironed out too (the login sound was jerky and interrupted), and the kmixer's channels are correctly named and assigned (there was no master channel, but 2 front channels instead). Also, the oxygen theme integrates better now, and there are no longer truncated fonts or widgets inside windows.
The upgrade to 4.2 also gave me the chance to see how smoothly major changes are incorporated to arch. All I have to say is kudos to the devs for their work and their responsiveness. Those who tried the upgrade very early faced a minor problem, but a dev showed up after a few minutes and confirmed that kde-bindings had been removed and everything was ok - and it was .
I am no fanboy, and I think Gnome is very fine (I've been using it non-stop for 5 years), but KDE4, at least with 4.2, has taken major steps forwards.
I could praise KDE4.2 forever but I have to convert my desktop to an archer right now. Finally, I think my distro and DE suffling has come to an end.
    Have fun, upgrade, and enjoy!
    Panos
Edit: Couldn't resist to add that kopete now works with my laptop's webcam. Before the upgrade, I couldn't get my webcam to work with kopete, although it worked flawlessly with skype.

  • Kde4 or kdemod 4?

I always used kdemod 3, until kde 4 came out, it was too buggy for me, and I've been working in gnome ever since. I'm ready to go to kde 4.2, it seems as if kde 4.2 and kdemod 4.2 are so very similar? Can anyone enlighten me on the differences, and opinions?

Just as a tiny piece of counterpoint to most of these responses --
kdemod4.2 on my Arch64 system was continuously losing my settings regarding widget (plasmoid) placement, configuration, and status(deleted plasmoids would come back, added plasmoids would vanish on logout/login), as well as wallpaper.  I struggled with reconfiguring my desktop once or more per day while trying various advice from this forum and elsewhere regarding deleting config files, checking permission settings, and etc.  The problem was sporadic, and sometimes I'd think I had it fixed only for it to come back.
At least one thread at the chakra forums seemed to indicate that I was not the only one with this issue, and it seemed limited to 64bit users -- I'm not claiming this as evidence of a widespread problem or even that it was the "fault" of kdemod devs/packagers, I'm just telling you what I know.
In any case, I uninstalled it and replaced it with kde4.2 vanilla from the Arch repos, and the problem vanished.  I've also not noticed any significant differences in appearance, functionality, or speed due to making this switch, though I acknowledge that there are likely changes I'm not aware of.
So while I'm sure kdemod is fine for just about everyone, having tried both back to back I really wouldn't know the difference were it not for the chakra branding being gone.

  • KDE4 logout very slow

All 3 of my Arch machines run KDE4, and they all take what seems like forever to logout. This happens irrespective of the speed the computer, as the experience is the same with a netbook with an Atom processor as with a quad-core. After you select the logout option and confirm it, 8-10 seconds will elapse before the screen goes blank, and it'll stay that way for at least another 10 seconds or more before returning to KDM (or going to runlevel 0 or 6).
Is this just normal for KDE4? I've only been using KDE4 since about version 4.4.2, so I admittedly don't know what to expect. GNOME seemed to logout very quickly, but I honestly can't stand GNOME and was only using it because KDE4 wasn't all that impressive to me until version 4.4.
I've tried to see if any one process is hanging up the system when in the process of logging out, by hitting ctrl+alt+f2 and running top, then logging out and switching back, and I don't see anything that persists and hogs CPU/memory.

Just for info, i had the same problem until a few days ago.
The problem was i couldn't shutdown my system using KDE's logout icon, either via plasmoid or the menu.
When KDE desktop started off, i also had an error message stating something about KDE init or KDE launch daemon
This showed off around the 05th or 06th nov. (as in post #3) and the only thing i did before was an update of the system and probably shutdown til the next morning. What i remember is that it updated stuff related to X like (iirc) xinit.
Now, a couple of days ago, i did update again my system, where it installed once again X server packages, including xinit 1.3.0-1 (X64 here).
So, i have no idea if it's related but now, the problem is gone for me and the error message i had seems related (to me) with xinit.
    Hope this helps
    Cheers

  • Streamlined System without Gnome or KDE

Is it possible to build a system with out using any programs that depend on Gnome or KDE basically wirh out the need to install KDE or Gnome, yet still be fully functinal with everyday desktop use"?
I might give it a try tonight and see how it goes
    Anyone else tried it?

iphitus wrote:you're cutting off yourself from some of the best software available on Linux. Whatever silly speed or ram saving you make, will not make up for the wasted time finding and installing programs that simply do not accomplish the task as well as the ones you're avoiding.
I can acknowledge this. Last week i scratched my head and had too much time on my hands. I installed Openbox as my wm and small apps that fit me pretty much. file manager was pcmanfm, music player ncmpc, icq still gaim, and so on....
In the end (that was on same day) i missed something. Dont know exactly what it was, but now i guess it's the application quality and leaving some apps (nautilus and epiphany for example) which i found to be very usable and easy at same time.
For me that was enough reason to smash it up, backup my home dir, and start new arch install with gnome and for me the project wm's is finished. the only thing i might try in future would be KDE4 but thats another story
Well, but probably the best would be to test it out for yourself. Some are of course pretty happy with small lean but somehow functional system, and because of this i would say give it a go.
as mentioned filemanager for example pcmanfm, music player a mpd client like ncmpc or sonata.
    good luck,
    cheers,

  • Rendering bugs on xf86-video-ati on GNOME Shell

Hi guys. I have a problem with graphics rendering on Arch i686 installed on a bootable USB stick. To handle multiple devices I did pacman -S xorg-drivers. Unfortunately when I log in to GDM/GNOME shell the screen is full of artifacts - several icons are just invisible and rectangular parts of page in Chromium are black, gnome-shell controls blink and so on.
I did not test other display managers/desktop environments. xf86-video-ati works fine for me on 64bit Arch installed on the HDD.

You don't need "radeon" in MODULES, and neither the Module section in xorg.conf, nor the DRI one.
yeap, removing 'radeon' from 'MODULES=' seems to of loaded the driver in the right order and made DRI work,
    thank you.

  • User session stops completely and restarts (GNOME 3.10)

Since last week I have experienced suddenly closing all applications closing and sending me to the log-in screen.
Using journalctl I can see that all applications exited with a "Fatal IO error 11 (Resource temporarily unavailable) on X server :0". It all ends with the user session stopping and then being started again.
Here is a journald log from yesterday at 13:10.

From what I remember I have also had this issue when Skype wasn't open.
Yesterday my computer started up beeping - I took the harddisk out and it started normally (initramfs tho). Then I put it back in and the laptop have been running fine so far. I suspect it might just have been a bad connection, but I am giving it time..
    EDIT: Still experiencing the issue..
