Spontaneous hard factory reset

Two days ago, I turned on my iPad to play a little GodFinger. I found that the "Connect to laptop" starting screen was on. I figured this was some way Apple had of forcing customers to take an update for security reasons or some such. Imagine my shock when I found out that this was a spontaneous hard factory reset. I have to take a sync from 6 weeks ago and reset from there. I'm furious. I cannot believe that I'm alone with this symptom. Has anyone else suffered this?
Curious,
Matthew

Just back from vacation in Arizona, where I bought the iPad2.
Had it now for 2 weeks, everything fabulous.
Updated to OS ver 4.3.1 yesterday.
Downloaded various apps, incl. Numbers etc.; keeping them in 6 folders, so that all are accessible from main home screen.
THEN DISASTER:
(sorry if longwinded, but I want to give as much background as possible - I don't want to hard-reset if at all possible!)
A couple of hours ago I created various test emails on the Mac, each with a different file attached, e.g. jpg, txt, doc, pdf, xls etc. and sent them out.
Then, from the iPad, I looked at these emails in 'Mail'.
They all opened ok, and apart from an wmv video file I could open all of them.
While in Mail and looking at one of the files, pdf I believe, things went wrong.
I could not get out of the viewing screen back to the mail box menu.
Pressing the Home button got me back to the Home screen.
Touching Mail icon brought the 'frozen' file view again.
So I pressed the 'Off' button. Screen went blank and the little rotating whirl appeared in the screen's centre.
AND THATS THAT !!
It has been whirling now for over an hour. Pressing either Home or Off button, even for 10 seconds or more, does not change anything.
I then connected the iPad to the Mac.
iTunes gave error code 0xE8000065 and ''connected iPhone can't be read...''
So now I have plugged the iPad into the mains, via the power cord, so as not to run out of battery charge.
Tomorrow (UK time) I shall call Apple Care.
Any thoughts???

  • Hard factory reset and my findings

Alright...I decided to do a hard reset on my phone after having a few issues with froyo.  I had TK taskiller installed previous to doing a hard reset.  The two biggest issues I had was my texting seem to lag when I was texting.  Like it couldnt keep up.  The other issue was my batter would go from 100% to like 86% within an hour of little to no use.
I performed a hard rest. (powered off phone, press the down volume and press the power button, select clear storage.)  This complete resets phone,  even had to reactivate the phone.
Charged phone all night as usual.  Had it turned off while charging throught he night, as usual.  Battery was still at 100% even after an hour.  Phone was at 86% at 2pm.  I took it off the charger at 7am, mind you.  Also I did not reinstall my app killer after hard resetting but I did reinstall all apps the I previously had.  I exported contacts to sd card before resetting so all I had to do was import them back to phone after reset.  There is no longer any lag in my text usage.
My findings....battery performance has definitely increased, in fact it is almost 9pm and batter is at 76%.  This is an extended battery, mind you, but...it was the same battery that was below 50% at this time before the reset.
In summary, the small issue with texting has been resolved and my battery is definitely lasting longer.  As to why the battery lasts longer, wether it was due to reset or just not having app killer, I do not know.  So yeah....hard reset and no app killer worked great for me!

I also did a hard factory reset.  I was using the 3500 extended battery, and after the upgrade to 2.2, what used to be 6 days on a single charge was reduced to only 2 days.  So, I did the hard factory reset.  I DID NOT find that to be helpful with the battery usage.
But, what I did find is that if I leave my WiFi turned on, the battery drains much more quickly than if I shut it off and only turn it on when needed.  However, this was not a problem under 2.1.  I left the WiFi on all the time.

  • AE won't soft/hard/factory reset after WDS

    Hi,
I can't get my Airport Express to reset no matter what method I try: pushing the reset button down (soft), holding it down for 5 or 10 seconds (hard), or holding it down while plugging the unit in (factory). Nothing works; it just blinks slow amber no matter what I do.
The AE doesn't show up as a network to log onto and it doesn't show up in the Airport utility, even if I'm plugged in via ethernet cable. I can't even see it when I use a third-party wireless scanner like AirRadar. So I'm not sure what firmware it's running.
The background: I had the AE set up as a WDS bridge to the Netgear where I used to live and don't have access to now. I think this means the AE is constantly trying to log back on to its old friend the Netgear, so the AE isn't even putting out it's own signal for the Airport Utility to see. That's my theory at least.
I don't really hear the famous "audible click" when I hold down the reset button, but I'm holding it down very firmly with a paper clip. If anyone has any ideas I'd love to hear 'em... please help!
    thanks
    Lucas

I've got the same problem. It's like the Express is outmoded. It worked fine until I installed the latest version of OS10 and now the Airport Setup won't recognize the Express.

  • Problem with factory resetting Airport Express

I am trying to do a hard factory reset my airport express. I want to reset it to the factory default so that I can change the settings so that it connects to my comcast wirless modem. I followed the instructions on the apple support site. I held the reset button will the device was unplugged and then plugged it in while still holding the reset button. I held it until the green light flashed four times. But the stupid thing will not reset at all. Just the same blinking orange light. No green light. And of course, non identifiable on airport admin utility. This is really frustrating. Anyone know how to solve this problem.
    Thanks

I have the exact problem described by AKAPLG. I've tried EVERYTHING with no good result.
    - My network does NOT show up in AirPort Utility (and even the old Airport Admin Utility)
    - Even after hard reset I can still see the old name of my network but am still unable to join it.
    - I've tried connecting directly with Ethernet to my MacBook Pro, but it is unclear what I'm supposed to do next, the manual doesn't mention this at all. When it's connected I do not see my AX in the AirPort Utility menu when I rescan.
    - The "Factory Reset" described by the booklet that came with the 802.11n device is inconsistent with what I see when I try it. I get a single green blink followed by a long solid yellow (sorry Amber) followed by blinking amber. I never see 4 green blinks, as described.
This is the worst Apple experience I've ever had. Period. Any more advice please before I take this POS back to the store and trade it for a punch in the ribs or a hot stick shoved in my eye?

  • K1: apps are forced close + can't connect to internet + can't factory reset

All of a sudden, my ideapad K1 keep poping up messages saying that **** has stopped unexpectedly and force close.
I try to upgrade the fireware while realize there is no wifi connect (the wifi works well on my other devices).
After trying tons of method, including calling the customer service who seems cares nothing and only ask me to do a factory reset. I eventually decieded to do the most stupid fix -- factory reset while told that "com.android.setting" has stopped unexpectedly and exits.
I try to delete the application one by one and after reboot, all the applications are still there.
So basically I can't do nothing change.
Any one has any idea how to solve the problem or how can I do a hard factory reset? Thanks in advance.
BTW: why my panel for this community is in Espanol even though I set it to English?
    Solved!

This might help in this situation,
As I mentioned in another post, if you start having forced closes or any other abnormal behaviour on your tablet or phone etc. shut it down completly and start it again. If that does not help go to settings and open up the applications box, and then open up "Manage applications". Choose "Running" and look at the applicatiions that are using the most memory. some of them are necessary, but others are not. If you see an application running that you never use, go back to "All" and delete the offending application. This should free up more memory, making your tablet more stable.... Hope this helps....
And if you can't shut down the tablet, let it run without charger until the battery runs down and it shuts off that way. Then charge the battery and try starting it again....
I have had my tablet since late october 2011 and have had no problems except if I try to set the brightness on auto. Just leave it on manual and go from there.

  • AE and closed network...deactivated my AE and won't hard or factory reset

Hi there. Simply set my AE to a closed network, but didn't get a chance to set name and password before AE shut down. Now I can't gain green light by unplugging and replugging, soft, hard or factory reset. Ugh! I can't locate AE on Airport Utility 1)b/c not up and running and 2) b/c is now set as closed network.
Can anybody tell me a trick to resetting AE beyond all the given resets?
Can I access what the closed network settings (name/password) may be?
    Thanks.

Sure... first I tried just unplugging but it plugged back in as amber light. Then I tried the reset button for 5 seconds. Then I tried for 10 seconds. Then I unplugged and plugged back in while holding reset button. I did this as outlined in the link above for resetting AE. With Admin utilities open the the settings named. The only time I can get a green light is the first moment it hits the socket, but it immediately goes solid amber. If I press and hold for 10 seconds I get 3 or 4 flashing green lights but it immediately goes amber (in this case, flashing amber)after the 3rd or 4th flashing green light.
When I connected AE via Ethernet cable, I had to hold reset for 10 sec to get flashing amber in order to view AE details in AirPort Admin Utilities. I get a flashing amber light and the base station is named in the Admin Utilities with the name,Ethernet (WAN), the AirPort ID and Apple Base Station V6.3. When I choose configure, I get the error message, "The AirPort Admin Utility was unable to read the configuration fo the selected base station. An error occurred while reading the configuration." I always get this far and get stuck.
Is it that the AE is not "green", or have I blocked access to reconfigure when I put it on a closed network? or both?
    Thanks...
    Tracy

  • How to factory reset my hp dv4-2169nr after i manually format the hard drive?????

after i format my hard drive, there are some problems. i have recovery partitions still untouched. so, how to factory reset from the recovery partition. helppppp

  • Qosmio X500/00X System Recovery (Factory Reset) From Hard Disk Drive or Separate Disk

    Hey Guys,
Looking for your advice and any links if any...cheers in advance
    My Situation
    In December 2009 I purchased a Toshiba Qosmio X500 - Model No. PQX33A-00X00J
At the time I upgraded my purchase from Toshiba Reseller BD4U, going from the standard 1x 500GB Sata drive + 1x 64GB SSD... to instead having 2x 500GB sata drives. I purchased with 3 year onsite next business day warranty, that is is now expired.
It came loaded with MS Win 7 Premium Home Edition - but no disks provided.
    My Needs
I need/want to factory reset my PC - its starting to run slow
I need to re-partition from my existing 4x partitions to just having 2
    The Issues
Possibly as a result of upgrading the disk drives at time of purchase, I don't believe I have a hidden Recovery partition in order to do a System Recovery from the Hard Disk Drive - see image of my current partitions attached
I don't have Win 7 OS installation disks or Toshiba Driver disks as they should have been installed by Toshiba
    My Questions
Do You agree that I DONT have a Recovery Partition - when looking at the partition image? I'm confused on this point coz people say its hidden!?
Given I have no Toshiba Drivers Disk or Windows 7 OS disks - what should I do? I'm thinking of downloading Win 7 (use my product key from sticker under PC) and making a disk/USB (but need to learn how)
Is this where I get ALL necessary Toshiba drivers for my PC from?
Does Toshiba provide a link on its site and instructions on where to get Win 7 from so I can make a recover disk??
    Notes
Tried to email Toshiba support but at step 1 of their email process validation failed due to my PC being out of warranty so will call them on Monday instead
THANK YOU THANK YOU, for any help you can give big ro small
    Cheers
    Rick

WOW, thanks Macius for that great, full and thorough reply...cheers mate
I suspected I didn't have a recovery partition - so thanks for confirming it as I planned to risk it and try! I guess it doesn't really matter why, and it would be futile to go and blame the re-seller or Toshiba at this late stage in the game in hopes they would help...
Yeah, I just went to Microsoft Software Recovery hoping to download Win 7 OS and create a recovery disk but of course Microsoft would NOT allow it due to it being software that was pre-installed on the device blah blah blah (see error image)
And I didn't bother back then in 2009 to create recovery media as you wisely descibed, mostly due to laziness and mentally putting it in the 'too hard basket'...I didn't really understand it - or much about computers at the time.
Re - your Option #2 - thanks for confirming Toshiba drivers. I could/can do this - but don't really want to buy something I already have, perhaps I'll check out ebay or see if a friend has a disk
Re - your Option #1 - I'm currently based in Vietnam and wont be back in Oz till late in the year, so will see if I can find a reliable Toshiba service provider here - but wont hold me breath on this one
I'm thinking that IF Option #1 is a No-Go then - maybe Plan B or Option #3 could be:
Do an Audit of Programs to identify those I don't need and can safely remove - then remove using Control Panel/ Remove Programs tool
Reformat all other drives (not C:// where OS is)
    Then use some re-partition software e.g. Disk-Partiton.com
    Any final thoughts???
Anyhow - thanks very much again
    Rick

  • Screen Keeps Dying - Tried Hard Reset and Factory Reset

I have a playbook which I recieved last spring and lately it has been giving me a lot of problems with the screen.
Starting around early December, the screen would not turn on after it had gone to sleep unless I pressed the power button on and off a couple times. Then, a few weeks later, that trick stopped working. I tried doing a hard reset where you hold down the power button and volume keys until it forces a hard reset. That worked a couple times also, then stopped working around the end of December.
Two days ago I did a factory reset by reinstalling the firmware. The device worked for a while, but today it is back to its same old problems.
I should note that when I say "the screen didn't turn on" in almost every circumstance, the backlight would turn on and a few pale lines would be displayed on the screen.
Is my playbook completely dead? Does anyone have any ideas what else I could do?

    Lost_at_Sea wrote:
Try doing a search on this forum or on Crackberry.com. There was a procedure written on downgrading the OS.
Yes I know, I wanted Johnpiz to explain the suggestion. You have to root the Playbook and render the warranty void, break the agreement you made, and risk bricking the Playbook. Not advised in this forum any more than recommending jailbreaking on the Apple support forum.
And it will not fix the problem either.

    Hi Philjp,
If you are having issues connecting to your Airport Time Capsule, even after a factory reset, you may find the following article helpful:

        Hello otter314!
Let's take a look into this to see if we can figure out what happened. When did this begin? What's the software version of the device? Do you remember what was happening with the device right before this started? Please supply me with some additional information, I'm happy to help with a resolution!

  • HP ENVY 17 Notebook PC: Can't Activate Windows 8 Pro after a Factory Reset (Hard Disc reformatted).

    Hello:
I had to perform a drastic cleanup of the C-drive of my ENVY 17 Notebook and did a Factory Reset. I was able to reload Windows 8 Pro from my recovery USB drive.
However, Windows 8 Pro cannot be reactivated stating that the Product Key is Invalid or Blocked. I understand this is caused by having the OS drive formatted and completely cleaned.
    My questions are:
Will the HP Recovery Disks (which is available for ordering) be able to help solve the above situation?
Will it allow me to reactivate my Windows 8 Pro?
Will the HP Recovery Disks/media contain or marked with the proper Windows Product Key?
    Thanks,
    Rico.
