Sporadic network connection

This weekend I moved my eMac upstairs and left the router downstairs w/ my server. When I had the Mac and server together, they were networked via Ethernet through the wireless router. Now that the Mac connects wirelessly, I don't have a good connection to my server.
The server is for web development and runs Gentoo Linux. The wireless router is a D-Link DI-624. When using Ethernet, I had no problems; I could ssh into my server without any problems. But since I'm going wireless, the connection times out when I try to connect.
If I reboot the Mac I can get an initial login but can't seem to maintain it. For example, if I open up a program remotely then minimize it, when I go to maximize it the window is blank. The X11 terminal window also won't take any commands because the cursor won't move.
If I let the Mac go to sleep, I can't login without rebooting. Besides not being able to login via ssh, when the server stops responding to me, it also prevents me from accessing Apache and doing any web design.
I have no problems connecting to the Internet and the only thing that is different is the wireless connection. I have WEP 128bit enabled but SSID broadcast is disabled for additional security. All current Apple updates have been applied and the router has the most recent firmware.

I don't assume the airport card is causing the problem.
Are the iBooks all placed from the same distance to the Wireless accesspoint? Try putting the "troubled" iBook in the exact spot of a "trouble free" iBook and check connection health. That way we can exclude that the problem is caused by some device in the house interfering or just the distance to the accesspoint. When you are too far away your signal becomes low and sporadic loss of connection can be the result.

  • Unstable Time Capsule - Sporadic Network Connections Drop

I just had a belkin router in, and then I got the time capsule, I replaced the belkin and now no connection (wireless) is persistent.  it connects/disconnects sporadically..  Plain ridiculous....any clues?
This is the wifi setup....all wireless here

The Radio Mode that you have chosen.....802.11a --- 802.11b/g.....will only allow an older "a" device to connect to the 5 GHz network.
You might want to consider having this setting at 802.11 "a/n", or 802.11 "n" only. Then faster "n" devices will be able to connect to the 5 GHz network. As it stands, you are forcing any "n" device that you have to try to connect to the "b/g" network.  If it connects, it will do so at much lower speeds.
"a" devices will only connect at 54 Mbps (same speed as "g" devices), so I'm not sure what you are hoping to gain in having the 5 GHz network setup so only "a' devices will connect.
Maybe I am missing something. Can you clarify here?

  • After updating to 5.2.1 my network connection is sporadic/fails.

Finally ran the update to 5.2.1 this morning. No problems with the installation. Now, my network connection cuts out in the middle of programs and then cannot be restored, even after restarting appleTV. At the moment, my network is up and running (I'm typing this on it!), but the network test in Settings fails. I cannot access Hulu+ or Netflix fail with AppleTV. I am connected via ethernet and both IP and DNS are configured automatically. (Which always worked fine before the update.) I have changed NO settings.
I did get it to connect briefly after the update, but then while watching a video it cut out and cannot be restored. Is this a new ethernet problem?
I am NOT currently trying to run AirPlay. I am simply accessing via the AppleTV remote.

I just posted this question (same problem).
Last week I had an update for Apple TV (3). (version 5.2.1.) Now the streaming is so slow (or not working at all) that I am even not able to play music. Playing movies became total impossible. And sometimes the complete connection is lost. Even my computer is slowing down (on the internet), perhaps because something is happening between my computer and Apple TV. It became a total disaster and I do not know how to solve this. Further nothing changed. I have the same WiFi router, Apple TV is still on the same place and I have a signal strength of 80% on Apple TV.

  • IPhone 4s Sporadically not connecting to 3g even though the 3g symbol is displayed.

    Hi,
I purchased my iPhone 4s (Simfree) from the Irish online apple store back in November 2011.
Since purchasing I was having a very annoying problem where by the phone would sporadically not connect to 3g but would display all the characteristics it was trying i.e. 3G symbol with little activity circle. The quickest fix was to restart the phone which would work again for a few days until it would happen again.
From experience, it seemed to happen more when I went from WiFi to 3G. If I had to give a guess I would say it was like it just couldn’t make the switch from WiFi to 3g and resulted in no internet when on mobile data. Note: It always worked on WiFi no matter what)
I tried all the usual things like restoring the phone to factory settings and closing all apps running in the background before leaving WiFi but the problem kept appearing.
After months of trying different configs I think I’ve finally solved it.
I enabled “Data Roaming” from settings\general\network and so far so good. The strange thing is, I shouldn’t need “Data Roaming” turned on as I don’t roam. My wife’s iPhone 4 and my last two iPhones all had this function turned off by default.
I decided to post this as it was so annoying; it actually took away from owning the 4s when it should be a joy to own.  I only hope this helps someone else with similier problems to my own.
    Thanks,
    Mark
PS: Remember to turn “Data Roaming” off when traveling or you could end up for some pretty big bills

my wife's iphone 4S has the same problem. All of sudden 3G data is no longer working and battery is draining very fast, to the point that you can see the percent points going down as you look at the phone.
I found a solution on this forum http://www.iphoneforums.net/forum/iphone-help-15/4s-data-not-working-3g-23911/ that seems to fix the data problem at least. Don't know about the battery problem as I have just applied the fix.
I read on the Apple discussion forum about a quick easy fix that the German T-Mobile is telling their customers to do to circumvent this Apple software issue. The phones affected are apparently only the 4S with OS 5.0.1 (9A405). This fix works for about 80% of the 4S phones that have this problem.
    Go to:
    Settings>Phone>Sim Pin>Sim Pin Off.
You may have to reboot the phone for the change to take effect. The change works on my phone. Good luck. And thanks for nothing, Apple.

  • IMac keeps losing network connection

My iMac keeps losing the connection to my AirPort very sporadically, but very often. I keep having to open Network Assistant, choose the AirPort and the network, and re-enter the password. I then get a message that my network connection appears to be working correctly, which it then is. This could happen several times in a few hours.
I have tried creating a new network, but it still happens. We have 6 other devices on this network and do not have a problem with those devices.
    Any advice?

What am I looking for in the window that pops up?
here's a (very crude) screen shot of an iStumbler scan on my MBP
my network is called pegasus. see that it broadcasts on channel 11 (2.4 GHz band) ? see also that there are six other networks broadcasting on the same channel ? now, ideally i would change my channel to broadcast on "5" or "6", but since there are so many networks around, even those would give me interference from other networks nearby.
in the end, i decided to hardwire (using ethernet cables) most of my devices to my router (time capsule) in order to avoid interference alltogether.
also, there could be closed (hidden) networks around that only KisMac would be able to pick up.
lastly, as the read about *wireless interference* revealed, there are other sources that could interfere with your network performance: microwave ovens, cordless phones - heck, even enabling bluetooth on your very own Mac could be a source.
as an alternative to running ethernet cables throughout your place, you could consider *powerline adapters* _*such as these*_.

  • Time Machine backup causes network connections to fail

We have a simple network with OS X Server (10.6.4) + a 10.6.4 Mac client and a Windows XP client. For some time we have been suffering sporadic drop outs of the network connection from the iMac OS X client to the server: the shared drives just disappear and you can't reconnect.
I have now narrowed this down to a problem with Time Machine. By logging on as a user on the OS X Server I was able to observe that the user session on the server suffered the same problem sometimes and this ONLY happens when Time Machine is running - I think its always when Time Machine is backing up the server.
Its an absolutely infuriating problem and very disruptive for our business. I am loath to switch off Time Machine on the server but don't know what else to do. Has anyone else experienced this problem or got any ideas?

Yep, Rikakiah, seems you are right, I am not alone! There are two other threads here which discuss the same issue:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=11539266&#11539266
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=11539227
From my testing it seems that the problem may be related to some interplay between Time Machine and LDAP - I say this because I can sometimes clear the problem and regain access to my shares by going into Workgroup Manager, removing the group assignments (which give access to the shares), saving the change, then adding the group assignments back.
This made me think that your solution should fix it, but unfortunately although I have excluded /var/db from Time Machine backups, I am still sporadically getting the problem.

  • Network connection OK but Internet connection lost on laptop

I successfully installed 10.6 on my desktop first. Although I was connected to the network, I had no Internet connection. I fiddled around and did something that fixed the problem (not sure what). Then I installed on my laptop (family pack) and had the same problem: network connection OK, Internet connection not OK. Fiddled some more, but no joy. I've spent hours trying to get to the bottom of this, to no avail. Ran disk utility and network utility just for the heck of it. Anyone know what setting must have changed to knock off my lap top Internet connection? (I have Airport and WiFi through AT&T U-verse.)

In my case the DNS address is greyed out so I cannot select it. What worked for me - occasionally - is changing the Network location to 'Automatic'. I had it set on a custom setting. Unfortunately this is sporadic. It will start to display content then just stops. I can jump-start it by fiddling with location but not always. The Airport range seems to be reduced too but I think that is just the flakiness of the connection.

  • Hyper V virtual machine randomly loses network connectivity

I have an extremely odd issue happening on one of my Hyper-V virtual machines.  For no apparent reason and completely sporadically my virtual machine will lose all network connectivity.  It is a linux Vyatta firewall image.  Digging through
the logs shows nothing at all when the machine actually goes offline, but when the machine starts back up I just get a Warning stating the network driver on my virtual machine loaded but has a different version from the server.  Server Version 3.2 Client
    version 0.2
I've ran the integrated services setup disk and nothing has fixed this.  When the VM loses connectivity it is for no apparent reason, sometimes at 1am sometimes at noon, just happens.  The only solution is to reboot the VM to bring it back online.
Has anyone else seen this or know of a fix for it?  Its starting to slowly drive me insane!
    Hyper V Server - Windows Server 2008 R2 - Hyper V Manager Version 6.1.7601.17514
VM - Linux Vyatta Core 6.3

I tried downloading new integrated services disk setup for linux, but Vyatta wouldn't work with it so I was kind of stuck there.  And not sure where you are talking about changing NIC to legacy at.  I did disable some TCP chimpney settings as
per an article I found, but not sure if it will fix it or not.  Sometimes the machine will stay on for a month before losing network connection and sometimes it comes in spurts and happens like 3-4 times over a couple days.  Its really odd

  • Hi, I am trying to update an iPhone 4 from iOS 4.3.3 to iOS 7.0.4, and every time I try to update it comes up with an error message saying that there was a problem because the network connection was reset. Is there any way I can get past this and update?

    The full message said:
There was a problem downloading the software for the iPhone "Judy's iPhone 4". The network connection was reset.
Make sure your network settings are correct and your network connection is active, or try again later.
I am trying to update the iPhone for my grandmother, Judy, as I am leaving for Paris on Wednesday night and we want to have Facetime installed on her iPhone before then, so we can stay in contact with each other. It is the simplest way for this to happen but the program simply will not allow me to update her iPhone.
Is there any way to get past this error and update her iPhone? Any help will be greatly appreciated.

    Dear Jody..jone5
Good for you that can't update your iphone because I did it and my iphone dosen't work for example I can't download any app like Wecaht or Twitter..

Did you get anywhere with this? I'm getting the same error when I try to use Home Sharing. It worked through all the 9.x versions, but with 10.0.1, I can't even home share between two identical MacBooks. I get the above error when I try to copy a song / video / etc. from one library to another.

  • ITunes Store Error Message: "network connection was reset"

I've been having trouble connecting to the iTunes Store since Dec. 25, 2006. The last time I was able to connect to the site was Jan. 2, 2007!
The error message that I have been receiving is: "iTunes could not connect to the iTunes Store. The network connection was reset."
Here are the troubleshooting issues that I have already performed.
    1) Ensured that my internet connection was active.
    2) Checked to make sure Windows XP Service Pack Updates were compatible. No problems with the firewall detected.
    3) Have the latest version (7.02.16) of iTunes.
    4) iPod software is up to date.
    5) Ran iTunes diagnostics which states:
    Windows Firewall is on.
iTunes is enabled in Windows Firewall.
Connection attempt to Apple web site was unsuccessful.
    The network connection was reset.
Connection attempt to iTunes Store was unsuccessful.
    The network connection was reset.
Secure connection attempt to iTunes Store was successful.
Does anyone have this problem? Can anyone recommend a solution that worked for them?
    Sony   Windows XP

PS: I also went into Internet Explorer...
Selected Tools, selected Internet options, then selected Advanced Tab
Then I looked for the security section and made sure that SSL 2.0 was selected.
I was still unable to access iTunes Store.

  • PCs losing network connection

We often have one of our ethernet-connected PCs lose its network connection.  (not just the internet, the entire LAN connection). To get it back we either reset the Homehub 3 or simply swap the cables between ports on the hub.  It isn't always the same PC that loses the connection, so pretty sure the problem isn't at the PC end.
I've spoken to BT in India and they sent a replacement Homehub 3, but the issue persists.  Both Homehubs are Type A.  The person I spoke with insisted they no longer make the Type B hub (which I wanted for its newer firmware).
Although we do have the workarounds above, this issue is annoying so I'd like to find a solution.

    Hi foxycat,
Do you get any error messages on the computer when it loses connection? I presume the error messages are the same on each computer? I'm also presuming each computer is connected to the Homehub using a different ethernet cable so this would rule out the cable being at fault. Is there one computer that doesn't lose connection at all, or does the issue occur when you switch on a certain device?

    Hi,
So switch a LAN card fix this issue...seems a compatibility issue or maybe some packs or programs you installed recently cause this issue.
Have you manually check the network adapter driver from the PC's manufacture website? sometimes, it will be a time delay before Microsoft push out the driver update.
Check if issue exists in safemode with network, this mode will launch Windows with limited sets of files and drivers.
if you have a restore point, restore the pc to a previous point at which the pc is functioning fine.
