Spotlight causes segmentation fault on one HDD partition

I've been having an issue ever since re-installing Snow Leopard 10.6.4 onto my 2.5 GHz core 2 duo macbook pro. My HDD has four partitions on it, system, bootcamp, data and reserve (empty). I was investigating continuous reads of the drive and found that spotlight was causing segmentation faults. By trial and error, I discovered that by moving the Data partition into the Privacy area of Spotlight, it stopped the scanning and allowed me to make Time Machine backups of the partition (Time Machine issues were what originally clued me in to the indexing problem).
An example of the log file follows:

Right now, the issue has a short term fix, i.e. disabling spotlight on the data partition, but I'd like to have a long-term solution to the problem. Any advice is appreciated.
FYI, this problem did not exist on this same computer with the same HDD configuration prior to my reinstallation of Snow Leopard. I reinstalled Snow Leopard due to the installation of a SSD drive, but this problem happens now when booting either to the System partition on the HDD or the System partition on the SSD.
Thanks!
Garth

  • SQL Server Driver for Linux causes Segmentation Fault

    Hello,
    I'm using the SQL Server Driver 11.0.1790 on Linux with mod_perl and Apache. While running fine with all my CLI Perl apps I occasionally get Segmentation Faults when using it from within mod_perl applications. Sometimes every other connect to the database
    segfaults. I've created a core dump and did a stack backtrace:
    Loaded symbols for /usr/lib/../lib64/libxml2.so.2
    Core was generated by `/usr/sbin/httpd2 -X'.
    Program terminated with signal 11, Segmentation fault.

    Can onebody help fixing this issue?
    Best regards,
    Stephan

    Hi Stephan,
    This is a bug in the unixODBC Driver Manager 2.3.0.  Essentially, you can only have one HDBC per HENV.  The mod_perl must be creating the connections upon the same HENV.
    The bug appears to be fixed in version 2.3.1 but we have not yet certified that out driver can work with 2.3.1.  See the 2.3.1 release notes at
    http://www.unixodbc.org/ where the last item says:
    "Driver version was not being held when a second connection was made to the driver"
    The Driver Manager would "forget" that we are an ODBC V3 driver and try intereacting with us as an ODBC V2 driver for the second connection (which fails).
    The workaround is to create a new HENV for each connection but I'm not sure if this is possible in mod_perl.

    Regards

    This is mozilla firefox from xubuntu repository, here's the details:
    firefox 35.0.1+build amd64
    I tried to reinstall the package, remove the extension xul-ext-webaccounts, and create a new profile without success.
    I don't know if the previous segmentation faults may be related to the recent flash security bugs CVE-2015-0313..
    Anyway I checked the plugin and updated the shockwave flash plugin from 11.2.202.440 to 11.2.202.442
    Now I experienced a crash of the shockwave flash plugin again, but it lets the browser and os responsive.
    Here are the kernel report by dmesg:

    I don't know if disabling hardware accelaration from the adobe player could be effective.. Anyway I can't follow the guide at https://helpx.adobe.com/flash-player/kb/video-playback-issues.html#main_Solve_video_playback_issues becouse the right click context menu "Settings" of the flash player appears not clickable (disabled)
    Anyway I'll turn off the hardware accelaration option from the browser.
    Unfortunatly I haven't tested the 32 bit version from mozilla repo yet.
    Thanks for your fast reply.

  • Collect causes segmentation fault when profiling L2 data cache misses on T1

    I am attempting to profile L2 data cache misses on a SUN T1000 server, but collect causes a segmentation fault when I choose to profile L2 data cache misses.
    Is it possible to profile L2 data misses on the T1 processor?
    Thanks!
    -John
    A simple hello world application and the failed profiling:
    %] collect -p +on -h ecdm hello
    Segmentation fault
    I compiled with
    CC -xhwcprof -xdebugformat=dwarf -g -03 -o hello hello.c

    No it is not possible to profile L2 cache misses -- the chip does not generate
    interrupts on performance register 0 (only register 1, which is hard-wired
    to instruction count).
    That said, we should not generate a segmentation fault. Exactly
    which version of collect are you using? We did patch Studio 11
    to correctly handle the US-T1, and Studio 12 express also
    correctly handles it.
    Is the SEGV on the collect command, or on the target it launches?

  • Ssh has stopped working - reverse mapping causes segmentation fault

    This was working on Friday, believe me. I haven't done anything that I'm aware of (apart from reboot the machine) to change things, except in trying to fix it.
    Briefly, ssh crashes out with a segmentation fault and a crash log (below). Poking around with verbosity gives (real ip obscured):
    % ssh ip4 -vvvv

    I get similar reports for %ssh FQDN and %ssh $USER@[FQDN*|*ip4].
    Although I'm trying to ssh to a machine on another continent, trying to ssh into my own machine (from a Terminal window on my own machine) also does not work. Setting UseDNS no in /etc/sshd_config on my machine does not help. Oddly, trying to ssh to my own machine by
    %ssh 127.0.0.1 gives
    debug1: Enabling compatibility mode for protocol 2.0

  • Open file dialog in java apps causes segmentation fault

    Started to happen since sometime early in the java 1.5 releases (the early developer releases and still now)
    Programs like Eclipse (3.1.x) and Azureus (2.3.0.x), when I try and open a file using the toolbar or menu the application dumps. I am tried repairing permissions, deleting java config/cache files, etc. No luck.
    I thought I narrowed it down to either my external firewire drive or samba volume being mounted, but that seemed to just be a false positive.

    I forgot to tell you that we in this case use a remote connection through Cisco VPN. Are there difference in how Jinitiator and SUN's JPI handle this
    We also tried against other customer width the same result. It seems to have importance if you are remote or not. If you are on local LAN it seems to be the almost the same time if you use Jinitiator or SUN's JPI.

  • Segmentation fault with just one user

    Hi,
    When I try to close a toolwindow in an application (it's iViewMediaPro), the app crashes. Console says, there's a segmentation fault. This happens only with one useraccount (adminrights). I deleted .pref-files, reinstalled the software, emptied the preferencesfolder in the users library and started the app then, nothing helps.
    Any ideas to solve the problem?
    Thanks for help
    Wolfgang

    Are you implying that you can run that app in other accounts without any problems? If so, then there's corruption or a conflict within the original account, usually associated with preference files. See my response in http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=8664734 on how to resolve those.

  • SRW.APPLY_DEFINITION cause (core dumped) Segmentation fault

    When I run report under Concurrent manager, i.e. within Oracle Applications I get this error:
    (core dumped) Segmentation fault.
    I use SRW.APPLY_DEFINITION in After Parameter Form. When I remove SRW.APPLY_DEFINITION report runs fine.
    I tried following in the command line:
    $ ar60runb report=/PATH_TO_RDF_FILE/NAME.rdf batch=yes destype=file desname=/PATH_TO_OUTPUT_FILE/NAME.out desformat=XML
    and I get this error:
    ar60runb: uisfz.c:173: uisfzfn_Fns: Assertion `0' failed.
    Aborted (core dumped)
    When I remove "batch=yes" or use "batch=no" everything passed fine.
    I get the same result when I use .RDF file without SRW.APPLY_DEFINITION in the code.
    I have applied the solution from Note:368457.1 but it didn't help.
    I want to set "batch=no" when I run report under Oracle Applications or just resolve this problem somehow.

  • NSS Partition Segmentation Fault

    I have an OES2 SP3 VM server (Vmware) which has a 100Gig Volume. The Pool / Volume was build from 2 individual LUN's which reside on a Fiber Channel SAN. The OES2 SP3 server connection to these LUN's is made using RDM (Raw Device Mapping).
    If I attempt to bring up this volume on an OES 11 VM server, I receive a 'Segmentation Fault' error.
    I know the volume manager changed from OES2 SP3 to OES11.
    My question is if there's a method to bring up this OES2 SP3 volume on an OES11 server without running an actual migration process?

    Have you tried to mount it with this command? - "$ sudo mount /dev/sda1 /mnt"

  • GNU compiled app crashes with signal 11: Segmentation Fault

    Hi Community,
    I know this is not a GNU oriented forum, but maybe this is a common issue.
    We have a C++ multi-threaded application running properly in Solaris 9 Sparc. Due to some issues mostly related to the NICs we needed to have the application running in Solaris 10 x86. The problem is that the compilation is ok (always with GNU) but during run time, we have the application crashing in different instructions because of a signal 11.
    It always crashes in a malloc call within the libstdc++.so.6
    It was compiled with the option -mt and -lthread. Is this a known problem? Do you recommend any direction to start seeking for a solution?
    Pls, find attached the gdb outcomes after the crash.
    Thanks in advance, Pablo

    A crash in malloc in multi-threaded code could be a bug in the system malloc or a failure to use a thread-safe malloc. The default Solaris malloc in /usr/lib/libc.so.* is thread-safe.
    A crash in malloc can also be caused by a heap corruption. Probably the most common causes of heap corruption are
    - writing beyond the bounds of a buffer or variable (off by one, for example)
    - deleting the same object more than once
    - using an invalid pointer:
    --- uninitialized
    --- pointing to a deleted object
    --- pointing to an out-of-scope object
    - failure to guard a critical region
    - failing to declare shared objects as volatile

  • Xorg segmentation fault / nvidia proprietary blob

    Hi!
    I've been experiencing this issue with xorg crashing leaving the system completely unresponsive and with completely black screen. It appears to happen at random times and not consistently at all. It occurred for the first time several days ago. Unfortunately I'm not in a good position to track what may have caused this because I did pretty massive update 2-3 weeks ago. Since then I've been updating pretty regularly.
    Here are some xorg logs.
    It's pretty much full with:
    (EE) [mi] EQ overflowing. Additional events will be discarded until existing events are processed.

    I'm not really sure whether this is separate issue or not but I thought I should include it here. I don't really know what this is about but I've seen "kwin effects restarted" KDE messages occurring at these times too. I'm not sure how related this may be but I'm seeing lots of artifacts on rendered pages when using chromium browser. Nothing of these used to happen before I went and updated the system. Everything was rock solid for me.

    I'm not sure what is supposed to happen after xorg crashes and whether it's being restarted but everything related to xorg is unresponsive. The system otherwise is running fine but I haven't been able to find a solution to recover from this other than cold restart. I tried disconnecting and reconnecting the keyboard for instance and it's being registered(probably udev is responsible for this) but it's still "dead".
    Is it nvidia's fault or something else may be going on? I know you can't really do much dealing with the binary blob. I haven't given nouveau a chance for a long time but I may try this in the future if it helps with something tracking this. I'm using nvidia 325.15-10 package from the official repos for now and the card is gtx 570 fermi. xorg is the latest one in the repos.
    I'm not sure what driver version this package is based on(325.15 I guess). On the nvidia site the newest ones are 331.13 beta and 319.60. I can try them but I'm not even sure whether there are some patches needed to make them work with the newest kernels. At least I hope someone could provide more info on this because it seems interesting.
    I'll gladly provide more info if needed. I just don't know what more could be useful.
    Thanks!

    saty,
    Is this continuing to happen for you? I am experiencing the same issue with version 325. I downgraded from 331 because there were some major bugs in that version. Have you found any solution?

  • Segmentation Fault while installing on Solaris 9

    Hi,
    I was able to install Sun One Studio on Solaris 8 as root and was able to run it.
    However I am trying to re-install it on Solaris 9 as a user with super user previlages.
    I keep getting segmentation Fault when i run s1s5se-sol-sparc-en.bin
    Any pointers?
    thanks
    Sri

    Hi,
    From the develpers.sun.com KB:
    Installation
    S1S5 : Segmentation Fault when running Solaris S1S5 Installer
    Whenever i try to run the installer on a Solaris 9 machine as root I get Segmentation fault as follows-
    root[(k)sh]@score1# ./s1s5se-sol-sparc-en.bin Segmentation Fault root[(k)sh]@score1#
    Reason for Problem :-
    The cause of this Segementation Fault problem is due to a directory read permissions problem. The installer could not be invoked because the user did not have read permission to a directory above the one containing the installer.

  • Segmentation Fault

    Hi-
    I've experienced a segmentation fault from Berkeley DB XML Java bindings running in a web application (Tomcat). I'm not able to reproduce the error myself, but it's particularly troubling becasue it brought down the entire JVM that was running the web site. I'm not at all proficient with JNI, so maybe I'm not able to properly diagnose the problem from the logs. Below is the seg fault error that was logged by the JVM:

    elapsed time: 11252 secondsI see some "thread blocked" statements, one of them being on the "Low Memory Detector" daemon. Not sure what to make of that.
    This is the method chain (from what I can tell) that caused the error:
    public String getArticleId(String type, String category, String normalizedTitle)
              throws DAOException, DataNotFoundDAOException {
              XmlQueryContext context = null;
              try{
                   context = this.getXmlManager().createQueryContext();
                   context.setEvaluationType(context.Eager);
                   context.setVariableValue("type", new XmlValue(type));
                   context.setVariableValue("category", new XmlValue(category));
                   context.setVariableValue("normalizedTitle", new XmlValue(normalizedTitle));
                   context.setVariableValue("containerName", new XmlValue(this.getContainer().getName()));
                   List<String> results = executeQuery(articleIdQuery, context);
                   if(results.size()>1){
                        logger.warn(String.format("more than one article found for type:%s, category:%s, normalized-title:%s", type, category, normalizedTitle));
                   }else if(results.size()==0){
                        throw new DataNotFoundDAOException(String.format("unable to find an article that matches type:%s, category:%s, normalized-title:%s", type, category, normalizedTitle));
                   /* dbxml returns query values far xml attributes in this format: {}id="this_is_the_id_we_want"
                    * we must extract the id before returning
                   String idString = results.get(0);
                   return idString.substring(idString.indexOf("\"")+1, idString.length()-1);
              }catch (XmlException e) {
                   throw new DAOException("there was a problem querying the database", e);
              } finally{
                   context.delete();
         protected List<String> executeQuery(String query, XmlQueryContext context)
                   throws DAOException {
              // Prepare (compile) the query
              List<String> xmlNodes = new ArrayList<String>();
              XmlQueryExpression qe = null;
              XmlResults results = null;
              try {
                   qe = xmlManager.prepare(query, context);
                   logger.debug("about to perform query: " + qe.getQuery());
                   results = qe.execute(context);
                   while (results.hasNext()) {
                        xmlNodes.add(results.next().asString());
              } catch (XmlException e) {
                   throw new DAOException("Unable to retrieve Page from db", e);
              } finally{
                   if(results != null){
                        results.delete();
                   if(qe != null){
                        qe.delete();
              return xmlNodes;
         }And this is the query that was passed into the method:
    collection($containerName)/article[type=$type and category=$category and normalized-title=$normalizedTitle]/@idSince this happened in a running web application, I unfortunately can't determine exactly which values were set for the query variables in this instance. However, by the nature of this application, those values are NOT taken from user input, so it would be safe to assume that the input comes from a valid, finite set of values.
    Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks

    Thanks Lauren.
    I have not yet applied the patch. I will do so shortly. However, I was able to do a bit more tracing, and I think I've gotten to the root of the problem. The seg fault is happening when a null value is used in a query. That is, a Java variable whose value is null is used as the constructor argument to new XmlValue(String s), and then that value is used in the query. I don't know exactly where the error is happening; the log seems a tad ambiguous. Again, I'm not really comfortable at the low-level, but it seems that the stack trace is rooted in the "prepare" java method, but then there seems to be some native trace directly referencing the creation of XmlValue

  • Freemedforms segmentation fault

    I'm very interested in the QT application FreeMedForms. However, I have compiled the package from AUR several times (for versions 0.7.0, 0.7.3 and 0.7.4) and always get this error:
    "Main" "Command line: freemedforms"
    "Main" "Running release version"
    "Main" "Linux Integrated"
    "Main" "looking for libraries in path: /usr/lib/freemedforms;/usr/lib/qt/plugins;/usr/bin;/usr/lib/kde4/plugins"
    "Settings" "Trying ini file /home/martin/.freemedforms/config.ini"
    "Settings" "Using ini file /home/martin/.freemedforms/config.ini"
    "Settings" "Using network ini file /home/martin/.freemedforms/config-net.ini"
    "** ERROR(databaseconnector.cpp:229)" "DatabaseConnector" "Decrypt error"
    "ThemePrivate" "Setting theme path to: /usr/share/freemedforms"
    Segmentation fault
    Some details of my system:
    x86_64
    KDE 4.8.3
    kernel 3.4.0-1-ck
    Nvidia 9600M with proprietary drive (nvidia-ck-corex 295.53-2)
    I would really appreciate some help with this.

    One thing to note is the last line before the segfault: do you have a /usr/share/freemedforms/ directory?  I downloaded the source and ran qmake (following the PKGBUILD) and I can't find anything in the makefiles or installation that would create that directory - yet one of the source files has that path hard-coded in.  This could be the problem.
    FYI: grep found this as the only reference to that path anywhere in the package source.  This is referenced from one line of the source code, but never created in the installation.  If this turns.  Unless freemedforms expects to be run as root, there is no way this path could be created at runtime, and this would likely lead to a segfault - though it may not be the only problem.
    plugins/coreplugin/settings.cpp: setPath(BundleResourcesPath, QString("/usr/share/freemedforms"));
    If this is a likely cause of the problem (ie, if you don't have a /usr/share/freemedforms directory) then I'd suggest finguring out where the themes really are and either A: modify that line of the source code to point to the proper location, or B: create that directory and move the themes there [or C: (personally unpreferred) create the missing path as a symlink to where the themes actually are.]
    If you did not get any themes with the installation, you may have to track them down and download them manually.  Alternately, you could try just creating that missing directory and leave it empty.  You may get oddities from the app not having any theme, but this may at least stop it from seg faulting.
    EDIT:
    Oops: grep of course only searched for that path verbatim in the installation files.  Perhaps that directory was created as a $prefix/share/freemedforms or some such.
    EDIT:
    I found MANY references to paths like
    freemedforms/freemedforms-src/Makefile: -$(DEL_FILE) -r $(INSTALL_ROOT)/usr//share/freemedforms/package_helpers/freetoolbox.iss
    Changing the PKGBUILD cmake install root line to
    "INSTALL_ROOT_PATH=$pkgdir/usr" \
    (ie, remove the trailing slash of the path) fixes that problem.  However, I doubt this would cause the problem.
    Copying a file to some/long//path/ should have the same affect as copying to some/long/path/ even though the former is ugly.

  • LabVIEW caught fatal signal - Segmentation fault

    Hi,
    I've just obtained the Linux version of LabVIEW 7.0 from my University for academic use on my home PC, and I am having some difficulty getting the program to run. I've installed all of the "labview70-*.rpm" files into "/opt" using the "bin/INSTALL.norpm" from the CD (I am running Gentoo and don't have RPM support).
    When I try to run the program (cd /opt/lv70, ./labview), I get the splash screen, which says "Init temp resources file" in the bottom right corner. This stays on screen for about a minute, during which time, my RAM usage gradually goes very high, followed by my SWAP usage when the available RAM runs out (256MB RAM, 500MB SWAP). This happens regardless of whether I'm logged in as a normal user or as r
    oot.
    The splash screen eventually disappears and the following message is printed at the terminal:
    LabVIEW caught fatal signal
    7.0 - Received SIGSEGV
    Reason: address not mapped to object
    Attempt to reference address: 0x70126d74
    Segmentation fault
    I have checked the FAQs and knowledge base but can't seem to find anything that sounds similar to what is happening on my machine.
    My system is as follows:
    Athlon 1800+ XP
    256MB RAM
    Gentoo Linux 2.4.22-r2
    500MB SWAP partition
    24GB free space on hard disk
    Cheers,
    Martin

    Hey Martin,
    This is a new one for me. Try replaying your INSTALL and bin/INSTALL.norpm files with the one's that I've attached. They work well on my Debian machine (no rpm). That way you can run "./INSTALL" instead of INSTALL.norpm (which was only meant to be a helper app, not a primary method for installation.)
    As you probably know, reproducing a gentoo issue may be difficult because of the extreme customization. Is there anything uncommon that you might be doing? (using a locale other than C or POSIX, using a different threading library, etc.)
